la Habra express: Go Places… See Faces

The City of La Habra, in partnership with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC), is proud to introduce the La Habra Express to our community. The La Habra Express will augment existing OCTA bus service in our community and provide residents and visitors alike with another low cost transportation alternative to travel by private automobile.

The pilot service is funded by a generous grant from OCTA to the City under the “Project V Community-Based Transit/Circulators” program, a funding mechanism included in Measure M2. That grant funding has been dedicated to the purchase of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. CNG is more environmentally friendly alternative than vehicles fueled by gasoline. MSRC also provided funding used to purchase the buses. Two buses were purchased with the grant funding, along with a third bus in reserve.

The service will connect key activity centers in La Habra by operating Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm. One route will operate within La Habra, traveling along major commercial corridors and providing connectivity to employment and retail centers. A second line will travel along most of that loop, but also extend southward into Fullerton, providing La Habrans with convenient access to St. Jude Medical Center and the Fullerton Transportation Center. The La Habra Community Center (101 E. La Habra Blvd.) will be the transportation hub and bus stops will be located at several existing OCTA bus stops. The cost of each ride is just $1.

The brand new buses will be equipped with USB ports, which will allow riders to charge handheld electronic devices like cell phones, as well as laptops. In addition, the City is exploring the possibility of adding free wifi service to the buses, providing riders easy access to the internet while they travel.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony occurred at the La Habra Community Center on Thursday, July 31st, as representatives from the community, business leaders, and other dignitaries welcomed the Express to our town. Regular service commenced Monday, August 4th. For more information on the La Habra Express, including route maps, please visit its website at www.goplacesseefaces.com.

la Habra’s adopted Military unitIn 2003, through the Adopt-A-Unit program of America Supporting Americans (ASA) organization, the City of La Habra adopted Charlie Company, 426th Brigade Support Battalion 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. The City’s relationship was reaffirmed in 2005, when the City Council passed Resolution No. 5098. Since then, City residents and non-profit organizations have worked together to collect and ship donated items to Charlie Company during its deployments, forging a bond between our community and the military men and women who bravely serve their country.

ASA recently notified the City that later this year, prior to the holidays, Charlie Company 426 is scheduled for re-deployment. In anticipation of this deployment, the City is reestablishing its efforts to send care packages to our adopted unit over the course of the next year. We encourage

the community to become involved, as well. Donation receptacles will be placed at various City facilities in the near future. Additional information about the City’s Donate to Charlie Company 426 campaign will be available on the City website, www.lahabraca.gov; on the City’s Communicator page in the La Habra Journal; and by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at 562-383-4030.

Celebrating Success & What’s New in La Habra

Descanso Park Renovation Completed, San Miguel Park Is Next

On Saturday, June 14th, Descanso Park, located at 170 N. Fonda St., was treated to a makeover. The City of La Habra received a grant from Kaboom!, a non-profit organization committed to building a playground within walking distance of every child in America and

partnered with Freedom House Church and Foresters, a life insurance organization dedicated to helping families achieve financial security, to complete the project. In addition to building new playground equipment, volunteers planted landscaping, installed signs, built furniture, and painted designs on park paths. Besides saving City funds, community build projects are a great tool for bringing people together. Also, when a community is engaged in a common goal, results include a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of good will, a sense of ownership and pride for having contributed, and a reduction in criminal activity and vandalism at the site.

The City has received an additional grant from Kaboom! to renovate San Miguel de Allende Park, 981 N. Euclid St. The build date for that project will be Saturday, September 29th; Disney and the Institute for Healthcare Advancement are collaborating on the project. All are welcome to volunteer at this event. For more information or to volunteer, please contact the Community Services Department at 562-383-4200.

Youth Center Graduates Second High School ClassThe City’s Employment and Training division, in partnership with John Muir Charter Schools, graduated its second high school class on July 10th. Participants in the program, which operates at the Orange County Youth Center (OCYC), not only attend school for 20 hours a week, but also work from 10-15 hours a week at local businesses. By combining these two components, participants are able to integrate these real life experiences into the classroom. The OCYC offers young people the opportunity to develop career interests, receive academic support, and gain valuable

work experience in order to achieve their career/educational goals. Services are available to eligible youth, ages 16-21 years, in North Orange County. For more information about these services, please call 562-383-4227.

Volunteers HonoredOn June 18th, those who volunteer their services in La Habra were honored at a dinner reception at the Community Center. Abundant Living Church, Crossroads Community Church, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Freedom House Church, La Habra Church of Christ, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Vineyard Church were all recognized for their contributions to the Community.

Other organizations that received awards for their efforts were American First Credit Union, La Habra Family Resource Center, La Habra Girls Softball, and the La Habra Business Connection. City employees Georgina Lewis, Tracey Ponce-Christensen and Mary Ann Sy were honored for their many years of service for Operation Santa. Sergio Figueroa received the Sel Handler Youth of the Year Award for his activities, which include participating on the City’s Youth Committee and many others.

The total of 83,103 volunteer hours offers solid proof that La Habra really is the caring community that is the City’s motto!

Construction Begins On Five Affordable Habitat OC HomesOn Saturday, June 21st, volunteers and families gathered for the wall-raising kick-off of the first Habitat Orange County development in the City of La Habra, the beginning of work on five of the seven new homes that will be built on the lot at 526 E. La Habra Blvd. Bank of America volunteers framed the first walls to be raised, and the families who will occupy the homes, additional volunteers, donors, and local dignitaries, including Mayor Tom Beamish and Council Members Rose Espinoza, Jim Gomez and Tim Shaw, continued with the framing throughout the day.

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, headquartered in Santa Ana, is dedicated to ending substandard housing and building strong communities in Orange County. Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity families and volunteers have built and sold 177 homes, serving more than 880 women, men and children in Orange County. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

City Holiday HappeningsOperation Santa

The City of La Habra Community Services Department provides a special holiday season to underprivileged children and their families every December with the Operation Santa Program, which began 25

years ago. Names of families who would most benefit from the program are provided by the school districts that serve the City, as well as by the City’s own Child Development Department programs.

Donations of food, toys and items for youth ages four to 14 years are collected in October and November, and on the Saturday before Christmas, families are invited to the Community Center to receive their gifts, enjoy a visit with Santa, and other fun family activities. Last year Operation Santa served 600 families with 1,300 children.

You can join this very special program by donating non-perishable food items and toys, or by donating gift cards from Target or Walmart (these will be used to purchase items for older children) or from grocery stores. Another way to help is by sponsoring a family. Specific dates and locations for donation collection points are not available yet, but will

be posted on the City’s website, www.lahabraca.gov, on flyers distributed at City schools, or can be obtained by calling the Community Services Department at 562-383-4200. If you are interested in sponsoring a family, please contact Josie Anderson, Social Services Supervisor, at 562-383-4217.

Holiday Home Decorating ContestEach year since its inception in 2000, the City of La Habra’s Beautification Committee invites all La Habrans to enter its Holiday Home Decorating Contest. Residents are invited to participate, either by decorating their home or by nominating a property with decorations that are noteworthy.

Contest categories include: Best Use of Lights, Best Use of Animation, Best Use of Theme, Best Use of Music and Grand Prize Winner. This year’s winners will be recognized at a City Council meeting in January of 2015.

Specific dates for nominations and judging will be announced in November. For more information or to nominate a property, please contact Lovely Qureshi at 562-383-4238 or [email protected].

Mexican Brush Sage Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) is a highly drought tolerant perennial that is native to the subtropical and tropical forests in central and eastern Mexico. The plant initially produces flowers during the summer months and repeats its flowering cycle in the fall. It grows in mounds to a height and width of approximately 3 feet and produces soft, silvery green foliage from which long velvety purple inflorescences emanate and produce small white flowers. The flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies and can be used in ornamental flower arrangements.

When this herbaceous plant is dormant during the winter months, the foliage continues to emit an aromatic scent characteristic of many sage plants, which are part of the mint family. Mexican Bush Sage requires regular weekly watering and an initial amount of compost during the first growing season. Once established, however, it thrives in full sun exposure, but will tolerate partial shade. When in bloom, the plant is often readily available at local nurseries.

For more information or guidance on suitable plants and trees, please contact the Public Works Department at 562-383-4170 or explore the resources listed:

off your gas service. With this upgrade, you will have access to more frequent and detailed information about your gas consumption at socalgas.com.

• View up-to-date hourly and daily usage information and estimated costs

• Set and achieve your savings and conservation goals• Take an energy survey to learn how to conserve energy

and save money• Analyze your usage over time

SoCalGas is scheduled to install the advanced meter device on approximately six million natural gas meters through 2017. For more information, visit the SoCalGas Advanced Meter website at www.socalgas.com/innovation/advancedmeter/index.shtml.

Offsite Location InformationThe Community Services Department partners with local businesses to offer some of its Recreation classes at their offsite locations. Not only does this strengthen ties with the community by creating a mutually beneficial relationship, but some classes, like martial arts and dance, benefit from being held at locations that include specialized permanent equipment not available in City-owned facilities. Here is a list of offsite locations and classes:

• AdagioDanceStudio, 305 E. La Habra Blvd. — Adagio Dance Studio has been in operation since 1997 and specializes in teaching the youngest dancers in a supportive environment. Students have the opportunity to perform in recitals and at local events that include the Citrus Fair and the Corn Festival. Current City classes are Beginning Ballet/Technique 1 and Pre-Jazz (see pg. 20).

• AspireWellnessStudio, 2303 W. Whittier Blvd. — Aspire Wellness Studio offers chiropractic and massage services, as well as classes in Pilates Mat, Pilates Yoga, Yoga, Stretch & Tone, and Stretch & Balance 55+. Its classes work to integrate functional fitness for daily life activities and establishing core body strength. All of these classes are currently offered through the City (see pg. 29).

• FrazierMartialArts, 759 E. Whittier Blvd. — Frazier Martial Arts is family-owned and has been in business for 32 years. The studio combines martial arts with character education to build stronger leaders within the community. City classes offered are Childrens’ Self-Defense with Character Education, Karate Kiddies:

Parent & Me Karate Class, Krav Maga for Personal Self-Protection, and X-Treme Fitness Kickboxing (see pgs. 23 & 31).

• LaHabra300Bowl, 370 E. Whittier Blvd. — La Habra 300 Bowl has been in operation since 1960 and is operated by the founding Burch family. In 1982, legendary bowler Glenn Alison put the Alley on the map when he shot the first ever perfect 900 series on lanes 13-14, and he still bowls here. The City offers youth bowling classes here each summer.

• OneBodyStudios, 2424 W. Whittier Blvd. — One Body Studios opened in 2003 to provide a movement sanctuary with a friendly, open environment that offers people of all abilities a supportive place for classes in Pilates Mat, Yoga, and Yoga Therapy. All of these classes are offered through the City (see pgs. 27-28).

• Patrick’sMusicStudio, 649 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton — Patrick’s Music School has offered music classes by its highly trained instructors and performing musicians since 1972. Current City classes include Voice for Adults and childrens’ Drum for Fun classes (see pgs. 23 & 32).

• USADanceStudio, 401 W. angela KingHNEWH Yoga Mondays

Pilates Yoga Stretch & ToneHNEWH Yoga by Candlelight

Yoga instructor Angela King has been practicing and teaching yoga for most of her life. Coming of age in the ’70s, she was involved in what she calls “the hippy/activist culture”, where there was an emphasis on meditative activities, including yoga. When two of her roommates, inspired by watching her, asked her to teach them, her career as an instructor began. “I had no furniture in the bottom floor of my house, so I held the classes there,” she says. Attendance quickly expanded to include friends and friends of friends. One day, when she looked around the room and saw total strangers, she decided that she needed to move the class out of her home and into a public space. She connected with City of La Habra Community Services Department through a friend who was teaching a Pilates class and has been with the City for many years since. During those years, she became certified for both 200 hours and 500 hours as a Registered Yoga Teacher; for the latter, she fulfilled her internship hours working with St. Jude Hospital’s Yoga for Breast Cancer program. Angela’s motivation for teaching yoga is to share its loving kindness with her adult students, not only so that they benefit, but also so that they in turn can have a positive effect on the youth in their lives.

Yoga Mondays meets at the Veterans Hall, 10:00-11:00 am, Pilates Yoga Stretch & Tone meets at the Community Center Mondays, 5:45- 7:00 pm, and Yoga by Candlelight meets at the Community Center Monday & Thursday, 7:00-8:15 pm.

beverly SmythQuilting

Driven by an interest in the history of quilt-making, instructor Beverly Smyth took her first quilting class in 1974. In those days, she was only able to find two books on the subject. “Now,” she says, “there are thousands.” She continued to take classes to perfect her technique and add new designs to her repertoire, so when the City of La Habra wanted to offer a quilting class in the 1990s, a friend of Beverly’s recommended her for the job. Her first class began with only three students, but she worked hard to promote it, and her participants quickly grew to the 25 to 30 students who enroll each session. Beverly’s passion for quilting keeps her busy taking new classes and learning new techniques, as well as doing research on the history of quilting, all of which combine to keep her students coming back for more. There is one more very important component of her class that makes it so successful, and that is Beverly’s emphasis on the opportunity for friendship that develops when people quilt together. “In pioneer days, quilts on frames were hung by chains from the ceiling, and in the evenings or on Saturdays, when womens’ other work was done, they lowered the quilts and gathered to work on them,” she explains. In addition to her class at the Community Center, Beverly owns her own shop, where she offers smaller classes and quilting retreats.

Beverly’s class will meet at the Community Center on Thursday evenings, September 4th-November 20th, from 6:00-9:00 pm. For more information about the class, please see pg 32.
