Game 3Lynchburg, Va.

For the second-straight game, the Flames’ defense stymiedits opponent as Liberty held visiting Houghton College to just28.1 percent shooting from the field and 46 points in a 92-46home victory, Saturday evening, at the Vines Center. Withthe victory, Liberty pushes its record to 2-1 on the year withits second-straight 30-point win after downing visitingCincinnati Christian, 101-65, two days before Thanksgiving. The loss drops Houghton to 1-2 on the early season.Liberty’s first two victories of the year marks the first timesince the 1992-93 season that the Flames have postedback-to-back 30-point wins. The last time that Libertyaccomplished the feat, Liberty downed Averett (111-53) andCovenant (96-59) on December 7 and 12, 1992. Both teamsstruggled to find their shooting touch early in the contest asa lay-up by Larry Blair at 18:12 marked the first time thatanyone found the basket and Liberty held a 4-3 lead at thefirst media timeout (15:57). Back-to-back baskets by AlexMcLean and Rell Porter helped the Flames open up a five-point lead, 8-3, with 14:55 left to play in the first. Houghtonstarted to find the basket as well as the Highlandersresponded by scoring eight of the game’s next 15 points witha lay-up by Yannick Anzuluni, pulling the Highlanders withinfour points, 15-11, at the 12:46 mark. However, Anzuluni’sbasket would be the last for the Highlanders for the next fourminutes as Liberty scored 21-unanswered points, capped bya lay-up by McLean at the 8:09 mark, giving Liberty a 36-11lead. Corky McMullen snapped Houghton’s scoreless streakwith a three pointer just 14 seconds later, but the basketwould prove to be just one of two that the Highlanders wouldconnect on in the final eight minutes of the opening half asLiberty closed out the period on a 17-4 run, taking a 53-18lead into the intermission. The Flames finished the opening20 minutes shooting 57.9 percent from the field (22-of-38),while holding Houghton to just 29.2 percent from the floor (7-of-24). McLean led the Flames in the first as the juniorscored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. The sec-ond half didn’t prove to be any better for the Highlanders asthe closest the visitors got was 33 points on two separateoccasions during the first three minutes. Anthony Smith’sjumper off a feed from Justin Holland at the 13:35 mark gaveLiberty a 40-point cushion it would never relinquish. The tan-dem of McLean and Blair paced the way for the Flamesagain as McLean led the team by scoring 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field, followed by Blair’s 24 points, fourassists and two steals. Porter followed with 10 points andseven boards and Damien Hubbard pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. The scoring performance allowed Blairto climb up another rung on the Big South all-time scoring listas he moved into eighth place by passing Mark Mocnik ofCampbell (1989-93) who finished his career with 1,635points. Blair, who has 1,654 career points, now stands just10 points shy of seventh place on the conference’s list asWinthrop’s LaShawn Coulter (1992-95) finished his careerwith 1,664 points. Houghton was led by Luke Mortenson asthe guard was the only Highlander to reach double figureswith 11 points. Anzuluni came off the bench to lead the teamwith five rebounds.

by scoring 12 of the game’s next 16 points ending with a

Keena Young jumper with 6:06 left in the first half, pushing

BYU’s lead up to nine points, 23-14. The Flames closed out

the half on an 11-6 run capped by a pair of free throws from

Brewington to trim the lead to four points, 29-25, at the

break. The Cougars came out of the locker room and jumped

on the Flames early, starting with a 13-2 run that was capped

off by Trent Plaisted going one-of-two from the free throw

line, making it 42-27 with 14:02 left in the game. And the run

was all BYU needed as the Flames held a slight 32-31

advantage over the remaining minutes of the game, but

never managed to get any closer than seven points at 8:29

after a Brewington three-pointer. McLean collected his fifth

double-double of the season and second in a row with his 14

points and 10 rebounds. Larry Blair moved into fourth place

on the Liberty all-time scoring list as he scored 12 points.

Brewington chipped in 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the

loss. Young led the way for BYU with a game-high 17 points

and Sam Burgess scored 12 points in the win.

Game 12

Provo, Utah

Despite a better shooting percentage and outrebounding

their opponent, it was turnovers that proved too costly for the

Flames (6-6) as Liberty committed 14 first half turnovers that

led to an 85-81 loss at the hands of the Seton Hall Pirates

(8-3) on Friday night at the Marriott Center. The game served

as both team’s second contest of the BYU Holiday Classic.

The Flames controlled the game at the start, taking a 10-7

advantage on a basket by Alex McLean with 16:22 left in the

first half. But, that would end up being Liberty’s biggest lead

of the night as the Pirates responded with a 20-8 run capped

by a Eugene Harvey basket with 6:13 left in the half making

it 27-18.The remainder of the first half was a back and forth

battle with Seton Hall outscoring the Flames by just two

points, 15-13, over the final six minutes of the period, allow-

ing the Pirates to take a 42-31 lead into the break. Larry Blair

uncharacteristically had five first half turnovers as part of the

Flames 14 turnovers of the half. The second half didn’t start

much better for the Flames as they got down by as many as

17 when Brian Laing hit a jumper to make it 50-33 in the

Pirates’ favor with 17:59 left in the game. The Flames came

battling back, scoring 13-straight points capped by a McLean

lay up down low, trimming Seton Hall’s lead to 50-46 with

14:36 left in the game. The game remained close over the

next few minutes until Blair broke lose for a jumper to tie the

game at 65-65 with 6:58 left in the game. The Flames never

led but continued to tie the game four more times with the

final time coming with 49 seconds remaining when Dwight

Brewington put back his own missed shot to tie the game at

79-79.Laing then made a shot and was fouled by Damien

Hubbard with 33 seconds left. Laing made the ensuing free

throw to give his team a three-point lead, 82-79. Brewington

then turned the ball over and had to foul Paul Gause who

made one-of-two free throws to take an 83-79 lead with 27

seconds left. A missed shot by McLean led to a lay up in

transition by Eugene Harvey to make it 85-79 and seal the

win for the Pirates. The Flames drop their fifth-straight game

despite shooting 51.7 percent from the field on 30-of-58

shooting. The Pirates shot 45.3 percent on 29-of-64 shoot-

ing. The difference in the game was the 20 turnovers the

Flames had against the Pirates’ 10. Blair led the way for the

Flames scoring double figures for the 32nd-consecutive

game as he had a team-high 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting.

Brewington had a season and Liberty career-high 20 points

on 6-of-12 shooting. Anthony Smith chipped in 17 points on

7-of-10 shooting and McLean collected his third-straight

double-double and sixth of the season with 13 points and 15

rebounds. Laing led the way for the Pirates with a game-high

23 points and Harvey chipped in 18 in the win.
