The last time the Flames and the Highlanders faced off, Liberty escaped the Demon Center with a 92-85 victory (Feb. 28, 2009), avenging a 94-82 double overtime loss in the Vines Center the previous month (Jan. 24, 2009). Recent Results Looking to start 4-1 in the Big South for the rst time in school history, the Flames squard off with Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. on Jan.9. In a contest which went down to the wire, the Flames led by a single digit with 39 seconds remaining. However, following a Winthrop timeout, the Eagles’ Andre Jones hit a three-pointer, giving the Eagles control with 27 ticks left. Winthrop went on to edge the Flames, 65-62. Liberty returned to the Vines Center Jan. 14 after a ve-game stint on the road, to host Gardner-Webb. Senior Kyle Ohman reached a milestone, becoming the 21st member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. Ohman nished the night with 17 points (1,014 all-time), as the Flames improved to 4-2 in the Big South, defeating the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 68-57. Hoping to control the third spot in the conference, the Flames played host to UNC Asheville, this past Saturday. Throughout the contest, Liberty rallied on numerous oc- casions to make it a one-possession ball game, but was unable to grab the lead in the second half, ultimately falling to the Bulldogs, 74-70. The Flames travelled to High Point, N.C., on Thursday, taking on the High Point Pan- thers. Head Coach Dale Layer

Record at Liberty: 9-10 (First Year)Career Record: 279-203 (17th Year)

Mountain West Conference Championship: 20032 NCAA Division II Appearances: 1996 (Sweet 16), 1998

Entering his fi rst season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth coach in program history. Layer returns to Liberty Mountain after previously serving as an as-sistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season. This will be Layer’s third head coaching stint and fi rst since leaving Colorado State in 2007. Layer, 50, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette this past season where he worked with the guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-Ameri-can Dominic James, who injured himself near the end of the season. Dale Layer fi rst served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping the Flames to its best regular season fi nish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Cham-pionship. Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s fi rst round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications. Layer has a career 279-203 record (17th year) as a head coach, including nine sea-sons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel in the classroom too. In Layer’s 16 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 43 seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100 percent graduation rate of all players who fi nish their eligibility under Layer. After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky. Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coach-ing job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California. While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In 2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its fi rst NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the fi rst round.

Fast Break with the Highlanders Radford enters Saturday’s contest with a 10-7 record overall and a 6-2 posting in con-ference play. On Thursday the Highlanders hosted VMI, defeating the Keydets, 109-91. Three players posted double-doubles for Radford in the win — Art Parakhouski, Laz Tri-funovic and Joey Lynch-Flohr. Parakhouski led the way in scoring with 30 points, adding 11 rebounds in his efforts. Trifunovic proved dominant on the glass, grabbing 14 boards. The forward also tallied 27 points on the night. Lynch-Flohr rounded out the trio of dual category performers, fi nishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Parakhouski currently averages a double-double on the season, leading the High-landers in scoring and rebounding with 23.5 points and 12.9 rebounds. The center is also Radford’s leading shot blocker with 39 this season. Radford’s point guard Amir Johnson is currently the Big South assist leader, averaging 5.07 dimes per game.

Liberty-Radford Series Notes Saturday’s matchup marks the 55th meeting between Liberty and Radford, with the Highlanders holding a 31-23 edge over the Flames in the all-time series. The Common-wealth clash began on Jan. 28, 1975 during Liberty’s days as a member of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association. Liberty hosted the inaugural meeting, defeating Radford, 99-85. The Flames and Highlanders split the season series during the 2008-09 campaign, with each team picking up a win on the road. The fi rst meeting took place inside the Vines Center on Jan. 24, 2009, resulting in a double overtime thriller. Seth Curry led the way for the Flames with 30 points, followed by Anthony Smith and Kyle Ohman, who each fi nished with 18. Smith also achieved a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to his socring performance. Unfortunately, the Flames were unable to seal up the contest, as Radford pulled away in the second overtime period, earning a 94-82 decision. Five Highlanders reached double digit scoring fi gures in the contest — Artsiom Parakhouski (22), Kenny Thomas (21), Amir Johnson (16), Joey Lynch-Flohr (13), Chris McEachin (10). Parakhouski and Thomas also fi nished with double-doubles, grabbing 16 and 12 boards, respectively. The Flames avenged the loss in the Dedmon Center the following month. Curry and Smith each scored 25 and 24 points apiece, as Liberty ended the regular season on Feb. 28 with a 92-85 victory.

Layer Versus the Big South Dale Layer holds an 8-7 record all-time against current Big South opponents. Prior to returning to Liberty, Layer went 2-1 against Gardner-Webb as head coach of the Colorado State Rams. At the time, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were members of the Atlantic Sun Confer-ence. During his stint at Division II member Queens, Layer garnered a 2-2 record against the Winthrop Eagles.

Second Time Around When Layer served as a Liberty assistant during the 2007-08 season, the Flames went 7-7 in conference play. Liberty posted at least one win over all but one conference opponent. That season, the Winthrop Eagles took both contests against the Flames, 55-48 (Jan. 15, 2008) and 59-50 (Feb. 12, 2008). Liberty managed to sweep one Big South opponent, as they went 2-0 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 78-59 (Jan. 21, 2008) and 66-51 (Feb. 16, 2008). Liberty split in its meetings with Radford that season, narrowly losing to the Highland-ers in the fi rst meeting on Feb. 2, 2008 in the Dedmon Center, 89-88. Martell McDuffy and Amir Johnson led the way for the Highlanders with 22 and 21 points respectively. Four Flames fi nished in double socring fi gures in the contest — B.J. Jenkins (21), TeeJay Ban-nister (19), Jeremy Anderson (14) and Anthony Smith (10). The Flames hosted the Highlanders on March 1, 2008, in the regular season fi nale, besting Radford 78-71. Anthony Smith netted 29 points in the win, while B.J. Jenkins and Kyle Ohman each chipped in 18 and 13 points respectively. Barefoot for Bare Feet The Big South Conference, in affi liation with Samaritan’s Feet, is doing its part to bring attention to the 300 million children worldwide who are subject to disease, infection and death due to not owning a single pair of shoes. During Saturday’s contest, Radford head-coach Brad Greenburg will walk the sidelines shoeless in support of the Barefoot for Bare Feet campaign. Throughout the remainder of the 2009-10 season, Big South coaches in both men’s and women’s basketball will coach games barefoot. Flames fans will witness head coach Dale Layer coach from the sidelines barefoot during Liberty’s home matchup against the High-landers on Feb. 16.

Dishing it Out Flames’ guard Jesse Sanders is currently second in the Big South in assists per game, averaging 4.8 per contest. Radford’s Amir Johnson leads the way with 5.07 dimes per con-test. However, Sanders leads the conference in total number of assists with 96. Against conference opponents, Sanders is currently averaging 4.38 assists per game with 35 dimes in Big South play this season.

Burrus Burst Prior to his 15-point, fi ve-rebound performance against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, which earned him Big South Freshman of the Week honors, Antwan Burrus averaged just 2.0 points, 0.8 rebounds and 3.8 minutes per game. In the Flames’ last seven contests (includes games played between Dec.12-Jan. 21), Burrus has experienced a substantial increase in playing time, taking the court for an average of 21.2 minutes per contest. During the span, the freshman forward has avearaged 9.5 tallies and 5.7 boards per game, acum-mulating 16 of his 17 total blocks on the season in the process.

Ending the Streak Senior Kyle Ohman came off the bench in last Saturday’s contest against UNC Ashe-ville due to a wrist injury suffered in a matchup with Gardner-Webb, ending his streak of 55-consecutive starts. Prior to last Saturday’s game, the last time Ohman entered a con-test off the bench was on March 1, 2008, as the Flames hosted Radford in their fi nal game of the 2007-08 regular season.

First Double-Double Earning his fi rst collegiate start in Liberty’s 77-67 win over Presbyterian, Antwan Bur-rus proceeded to garner a double-double, fi nishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The dual-category achievement is the fi rst of his collegiate career. Burrus was the fi rst Flame to earn weekly conference honors this season. The forward was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week on Dec. 14 for his 15-point, fi ve-rebound performance against Kentucky Christian (Dec. 12). He is currently averaging 5.4 points and 2.9 boards per game.

Reaching the Century Mark Liberty’s 110-102 victory over VMI on Jan. 2 marks the fi rst time the Flames have reached the century mark in scoring this season. The posting snaps a 50-game drought without scoring 100 or more points. Prior to Saturday’s contest, the last time the Flames scored over 100 points also occurred against VMI, when the Flames defeated the Key-dets in the fi rst round of the 2008 Big South tournament, 103-88.

Flames in January Thursday’s loss against High Point gives the Flames a 159-164 record all-time in the month of January. Liberty’s best January showing occurred during the 1991-92 season, when the Flames went 8-2. That season, Liberty fi nished with a 22-7 record.

Points in the Paint In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames had success driving to the basket, scoring a season-high 64 points in the paint. The mark surpassed the previous season-high of 58, set on Dec. 12 in Liberty’s contest against Kentucky Christian. Grabbing the Boards In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames garnered their best rebound-ing mark of the season with 50 boards, outrebounding the Keydets by a margin of 28.

Double Triple-Doubles Kyle Ohman became the third player in school history and the second in three weeks to record a triple-double when he posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against VMI on Jan. 2. Ohman’s achievement marks Liberty’s fourth triple-double in school history and the third in the Division I era. Three weeks prior to Ohman’s achievement, Jesse Sanders became the fi rst player in school and Big South history to achieve two career triple-doubles. In the Flames’ matchup against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, Sanders fi nished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The sophomore grabbed the last board needed to complete the three-category achievement with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest, following a missed free throw. Sanders’ previous triple-double occurred on Feb. 9, 2009, when he posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Presbyterian. Both of Sanders’ triple-doubles occurred inside the Vines Center.

Flames in December Liberty fi nished with a 3-3 record in the month of December this season, making the Flames 104-128 all-time in the year’s 12-month.

1,000 Point Club Senior Kyle Ohman reached a milestone Thursday night against Gardner-Webb, be-coming the 21st member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. Ohman posted 17 points on the Runnin’ Bulldogs, giving him 1,014 career points. In the process, Ohman surpassed Mike Minnett and Mike Goad to take the 19th spot on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. He now needs 52 points to grab the 18th position from Mike Coleman. Ohman leads the Flames with 15.2 points per game and is ninth in the Big South in scoring. The senior currently has 273 points on the season and was the fi rst Flame to score over 200 points this season. Liberty’s 1,000-point club, features notable Flames, including Anthony Smith, Peter Aluma, Ed Vickers, Julius Nwosu, Eric Gordon and others. Three members of the 1,000 point club are also members of Liberty’s 2,000 point club — Karl Hess (2,373), Larry Blair (2,211) and Bailey Alston (2,115).

Watch List Week The Nov. 17 contest against Clemson marked Liberty’s fi rst encounter with a member of the 2009-10 Naismith Award Watch List this season, as Trevor Booker entered the Vines Center, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. The second meeting with a watch list member took place on Nov. 22, when the Flames traveled to South Bend, Ind., for a match-up with Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody. The Fighting Irish’s center posted 32 points and nine rebounds on the night. The Naismith Award Watch List consists of the nation’s top 50 players, who are se-lected based on their performances last season and expectations heading into the 2009-10 campaign. The list will be narrowed down to 30 players in February and four fi nalists in March. In addition to making the list, Harangody is also nominated for the 2009-10 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

Like Father, Like Son The addition of Evan Gordon to the Flames’ roster this season makes him the pro-gram’s fi rst second-generation player. Evan’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., suited up for the Flames from 1981-1984. The three-year letterwinner is currently No. 16 on Liberty’s all time scoring list with 1,154 points. While Gordon is the fi rst second-generation Flame, he is not the fi rst player whose father is also in the Liberty men’s basketball annals. Mark Manley, who played three sea-sons with the Flames between 1998 and 2002, is the son of Dan Manley, the program’s fi rst head coach (1973-77).

All-American Brothers Two members of the 2009-10 Flames roster are younger brothers of 2008 All-Amer-icans. Eric Gordon, Jr., is the older brother to freshman guard Evan Gordon. The elder Gordon spent one season at Indiana and was Third Team All-America member in his lone season with the Hoosiers. Gordon was picked seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clip-pers in the 2008 NBA Draft and averaged 16.1 ppg his rookie season in the league. He is currently averaging 18.9 ppg with the team. Sophomore point guard Jesse Sanders’ older brother Thomas received an honor-able mention on the 2008 All-America listing. The elder Sanders played four seasons at Gardner-Webb prior to the team joining the Big South. In his senior season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, he was named 2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. He currently plays professionally in Spain.

Foreign Born Freshman forward Patrick Konan, a native of the Ivory Coast, is the fi rst Flame hailing from outside the United States since the 2004-05 season, when Liberty’s roster featured three foreign-born players ― power forward Leo Lightbourne (Andros, Bahamas), guard John Clarke (Freeport, Bahamas) and Glyn Turner (Auckland, New Zealand). Standing out among the trio was Lightbourne, who was named to the 2005 Big South second team his senior season. After fi nishing his collegiate career at Liberty, Lightbourne began playing professionally in Europe.
