Next Wednesday, all Liberty faculty and administration willmeet together to discuss best instructional practices, andteaching approaches in each major subjectarea. Historically, we’ve convened these meetingsquarterly.

This year, I’m initiating even more interaction betweenelementary and high-school instructors in an effort totighten the school’s K-12 curricular sequencing, and tofurther extend the academic leadership of key facultythroughout both campuses.

For example, on September 26th, Foreign-LanguageDepartment Chair Mr. Marques Kem will head to theelementary school to lead a session on linguistic morphology relevant to the book we’reworking through, Maryanne Wolf’s “Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of theReading Brain” (specifically focused on topics introduced on page 38, if you’re readingthis insightful book, too).

In March, elementary-school Principal Mr. Casey Churchill will team up with a high-school instructor to lead a session for the entire K-12 faculty related to the mysteriouswritings of Crete, the dark ages of Greece, our understanding of oral culture, memory, brain function, and how children learn to read.

Inspired by this year’s school-wide motto Ferrum acuit ferrum (Iron sharpens iron), allLiberty students will benefit from our heightened efforts to concentrate the sharpesttalents of our professional faculty to hone the teaching expertise of one another.

Public-Info Night. Do you know anybody interested in sending their kids to Liberty(either campus); or just learning more about the school's history and philosophy? Pleaseurge them to attend our Public-Information Night this coming Monday September 17,6:30PM-8:00PM at Liberty Common High School. These are informative presentations forall parents wanting to know more about why we teach what we teach, and why we dowhat we do. For hopeful families waiting on the Liberty lottery list for any grades K - 11,attending one of these presentations puts you into the "upper tier" of those waiting forthe next open-enrollment spot.

Because It’s BeautifulBy: Torgun Lovely, LCHS Principal

“When are we ever going toneed this?” It’s a commonquestion students pose tomath teachers on a fairlyroutine basis. As a mathteacher myself, I absolutely love when students tee this question up for me. My favoriteresponse is to simply reply, with a twinkle in my eye, “You won’t.” The wait is not long forthe inevitable chorus of retorts. “Then why are we learning it?”

There are, of course, other answers. Students will acquire logical acumen, and will needthe knowledge, processes, algorithms, concepts, etc., for future levels of mathematicalstudy like calculus, or for careers in engineering, computer science, or quantumnanophysics. I delight in the exchange, however, and it’s a conversation I relish.

At first, students don’t share my delight, but I love my students, and I love to help themnavigate this particular stage in their educational journey. Students beginning my Pre-Calculus class are typically just acquiring a sense of academic maturity, and an acuteawareness of what Liberty hopes they’ll achieve in thirteen years of education. Dispellingthe notion that students are in school solely for the purpose of preparing themselves forfuture careers is both a joy and an incredibly meaningful conversation. It was a drivingfactor for Liberty’s founders in establishing a school running counter to the modernprogressive-romantic ideals dominating American education today.

Simply put, what we do here at Liberty is not job training. We are in the business ofmoving young people toward independence and assisting parents in guiding childrenforward on the path of freedom, which is only obtained by having an educatedmind. This is achieved by successfully teaching a contextual body of organizedknowledge, the values of a democratic society, and the skills of learning. I certainly hopethat sounds familiar to you, but if not, reviewing the school’s mission statement andaccompanying principles is of utmost importance. Seriously. Like now.

In an effort to remain true to our founding philosophy, and to belife-long learners ourselves, the faculty and staff at both theelementary and high schools read a book each summer. As oflate, it has been chosen from within one of the school’s keyprinciples (found HERE). This past summer we read MaryanneWolf’s provocative book, Proust and the Squid: The Story andScience of the Reading Brain about how “[h]uman beings werenever born to read,” but how our brains have been rewiredthroughout history to accomplish this strikingly complexprocess. The book was insightful as well as cautionary.

It is isightful because, as Dr. Joel Penning, our new high-school history instructor, noted during a staff meeting that:

“When Wolf is bemoaning a society of decoders, she is contrasting her description withthe final stage of reading development – fluency. Fluent readers do not merely decodethe letters and syllables to determine which word is on the page, but rather are able to

Page 5: Liberty Common Sensehs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server... · working through, Maryanne Wolf’s “Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain” (specifically

place the words in their full context to take into account multiple meanings, metaphor andallegory, uncertainty, and ambiguity. These senses all depend on a wide range ofinformation – of ‘core knowledge’ – that lets readers make connections within and acrosstexts.”

Dr. Penning nicely captured the exact essence of developing mature literacy in ourstudents, even before teaching a single day at Liberty.

The book is cautionary because it also warns of thedanger of not pushing students past the stage of merelydecoding. Mr. Jared Dybzinski, the LCHS EnglishDepartment Chair, summarized a warning by noting that:

“So many students think the goal of a readingassignment is to get through the material, be able tosummarize it, and thus excel in any sort ofassessment. When asked, such a student might saythey did the reading, they understood it. If this is thegoal of reading, I should encourage more and more useof Sparknotes. Socrates, contrastingly understoodknowledge is relational. There is a give and take withinformation in the midst of community – a dialoguemeant to facilitate true examination and growth beyond mere recall or retrieval. One ofmy main goals must be to model and require reading that is an experience, an entry intoa world, an opportunity to go through the portal of the text to a place of confrontation, ofreflection, of action, of growth. Thus, my discussion of a text cannot be merely aboutwhat happens to whom in what order. It must include vulnerable honesty of where I let atext take me – my success or failure with the portal, the invitation, the opportunity. Ibelieve when students get a taste of this, they will be discontent with mere decoding.”

Mr. D and the other English instructors are not merely focused on preparing students toventure from their classrooms to become copy editors or the next Grammar Girl, although many of them would do a fine job. Rather their focus is more classical in nature– helping students understand and be inclined toward beauty, truth, goodness, andperfection.

It wouldn’t be fair for the English department to be the only one with an opportunity tosuck the marrow out of life. Other teachers throughout the building feel the same way, including those in the history, science, art, physical education, computer science, foreignlanguage, and math departments. In the math department, we don’t just studymathematics to assist students in getting good jobs in order to fulfill some mission to thestate, as in a Prussian educational system. Rather we teach them to know, tounderstand, and to be mesmerized by math.

The equation to find the nth root of acomplex number in the image at thebeginning of this article introducesstudents to mysteries of rotationalaspects of complex numbers which in turn

develops the groundwork for students to be able to grasp the most elegant equationever written (known as Euler’s identity in the image nearby). We don’t just teach math tohelp students become engineers (although that’s a valuable byproduct should they sochoose). We teach math because it’s beautiful.

AST Tip Of The WeekNo Cramming. Some of you are now taking your first round of tests, others will havetheir first test of the semester next week. Unless your test is tomorrow, and you haven’tstarted studying, don’t do all of your studying the night before the test. Instead, reviewyour class materials several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time. Spacing outyour studying will help you know the material better for this test as well as your final.

Skiving Defined. Liberty's ninth-hour options are a great opportunity for students to getextra help in their studies. Students falling behind in their grades may be required bytheir instructors to attend 9th-hour study clubs, or zero-hour (morning) studysessions. Such students who are required to attend, but fail to show up for thesesessions will be given a conduct violation. The proper term for skipping thesesupplemental study sessions is skiving. If you see this new category in a homewardviolation notice, it means your student has skipped something he or she was required toattend at school. "Skiving" also applies to failures to show up for lunchtime ransom dutyand detentions.

9th-Hour Clubs/Extra Help. At the end of every day, there is a 30-minute period from2:45 to 3:15 PM dedicated for students to receive extra help from teachers and/or toparticipate in academic extracurricular activities (click here to see theschedule). Students may choose which club or extra-help session they would like toattend each day. Some clubs require an extra out-of-school commitment, but others areoffered on a drop-in basis. Observe Traffic Laws Around LCHS. If you are dropping off your student on CusterDr. please keep the following in mind:

Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane,Students should be ready to exit their vehicles when the car is stopped. (This isnot time to sit and talk about what is for dinner or finish homework),All students should exit the vehicle on the curb side,If there is a parent that has to get out of the car to help a student with items in thevehicle, this is not that lane. The student-parking lot would be a better location todrop off,No U-Turns,No jaywalking. (Drivers, don’t promote jaywalking by picking up or dropping offpassengers from the curbside opposite the LCHS property),Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. No left turn on Custer Dr., (EB) at Kansas Dr. (NB).

These and other traffic laws are too-frequently ignored during pickup and drop-offs. Forthe safety of our students, please adhere to local traffic laws and to our pickup and drop-off guidance. Please CLICK HERE to view it.

If time is required for anything longer than to just drop off a student, consider droppingstudents off in the student parking lot (northeast corner of the school). Particularly ifthere is a bike, musical instrument, or large student project that is being unloaded. Thislocation would also be good for beginning drivers with permits that need to changeplaces with their parent after they get dropped off.
