Hugo Wolf in rodni Slovenj GradecHugo Wolf, rojen Slovenjgradčan, je v svoji kratki skladateljski karieri ustvaril bogat in genialen glasbeni opus, ki ga danes uvršča med najuglednejše skladatelje resne glasbe. Še bolj kot v glasbenem smislu, slednje namreč prepuščam muzikologom in drugim glasbenim strokovnjakom, pa sta Wolfovo življenje in delo zaznamovala Slovenj Gradec zaradi prepleta različnih zgodovinskih dejstev. Raziskovalnemu duhu glasbenega pedagoga in nekdanjega ravnatelja Glasbene šole Slovenj Gradec Jožeta Leskovarja, našega častnega občana in prvega predsednika Društva Hugo Wolf, in aktivnostim tega društva, ki mu sedaj že vrsto let predseduje umetnostni zgodovinar

Hugo Wolf and his origin in Slovenj Gradec

Hugo Wolf, a born townsman of Slovenj Gradec, created, in his short career as a composer, a rich and genius musical opus, which today counts him among the most renowned composers of artistic music. Even more than in a musical sense, on which I leave the opinion to the musicologists and other musical experts, the life and work of Hugo Wolf has left a remarkable imprint on Slovenj Gradec, due to the entwinement of various historical facts. We owe a lot of gratitude to the spirit of research of the music teacher and former director of the Slovenj Gradec Musical School, Jože Leskovar, our citizen of honour and the first president of the Hugo Wolf Society. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the activities of this society which, for many years now, has been chaired by the art historian Marko Košan, that we have recognised Hugo Wolf as a fellow townsman of Slovenj Gradec also in his home environment, although this happened quite late. Maybe it was even for the best that it happened in that way, as the European dimension of coexistence has finally softened the prejudices which caused his memory to be neglected for almost a century. The historical distance dictates objectivity to us and therefore we may regret

Morda pa je tako tudi prav, evropska dimenzija sobivanja je namreč končno omehčala predsodke, zaradi katerih smo spomin nanj zapostavljali skoraj celo stoletje. Zgodovinska distanca nam narekuje objektivnost, zato lahko obžalujemo, da Wolfova glasbena genialnost v njegovem rojstnem mestu ni bila prepoznana in bolj spoštovana že prej. Ponosni smo namreč lahko, da je skladatelju zibel tekla prav v našem mestu.

Hvaležen sem svojim predhodnikom, ker so sprevideli pomen ureditve Wolfove rojstne hiše, ki je danes pod okriljem Koroškega pokrajinskega muzeja eden zakladov slovenjgraške kulturne dediščine in atrakcija, saj v mesto privabi mnoge ljubitelje Wolfove glasbe ter neštete izjemne glasbenike, ki jim je izvajanje Wolfove glasbe v čast in izziv. Vesel in hvaležen sem, da nam je ob 160. obletnici skladateljevega rojstva ponujena priložnost, da se mu priklonimo z Wolfovim letom, za kar se iskreno zahvaljujem tudi Ministrstvu za kulturo Republike Slovenije, saj se s to pobudo ni oddolžilo le glasbenemu velikanu, temveč je prepoznalo tudi prizadevanja Slovenj Gradca, ki skladatelju, v slovenskem in mednarodnem merilu, posveča pozornost in spoštovanje, kot mu pripadata. Posebno pa sem vesel, da je

I am thankful to my predecessors as they have seen the importance of the birthplace of Hugo Wolf which, today, works under the auspices of the Carinthian Regional Museum. It is one of the treasures of our cultural heritage in Slovenj Gradec and a sight which attracts many lovers of the music of Hugo Wolf as well as numerous exceptional musicians, who perform Wolf’s music as both an honour and a challenge. I am pleased and thankful that we have the opportunity, on the 160th anniversary of the birth of the composer, to honour him with a Hugo Wolf year and I would like to sincerely thank the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia as, with this initiative, it is not only paying tribute to this master but also recognises the endeavours of Slovenj Gradec which is giving attention to the composer in a Slovenian and international perspective, as he should be entitled to. I am especially delighted that Hugo Wolf’s Year is also being recognised by the Slovenian Postal Service with their publishing of a philatelic section, and within this main part the postage stamp which brings to life and preserves the memory of our great composer.

ustvarjati. Zaradi nesrečnih zgodovinskih okoliščin in političnih razmer je bil veliki skladatelj na Slovenskem odrinjen na rob. V zavest slovenskega kulturnega prostora je po zaslugi peščice zanesenjakov vstopil šele na začetku devetdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja. Njegova prepoznavnost je začela rasti leta 1993 z ustanovitvijo Društva Hugo Wolf Slovenj Gradec, katerega pobudnik in prvi predsednik je bil dolgoletni ravnatelj slovenjgraške glasbene šole Jože Leskovar. Med letoma 2010 in 2012 je bil uspešno uresničen projekt celovite prenove Wolfove rojstne hiše, kjer danes pod okriljem Koroškega pokrajinskega muzeja delujeta spominski muzej in mednarodni dokumentacijski center. Hiša je v kratkem času postala eden najvitalnejših glasbenih, kulturnih in raziskovalnih centrov v Sloveniji.V Wolfovem letu želimo s slovesnimi koncerti in drugimi kulturnimi dogodki še bolj okrepiti zavest o pomenu našega rojaka ter bogastvu njegove glasbene dediščine. S tem utrjujemo tudi identiteto Slovenj Gradca, ki se lahko samozavestno predstavlja kot rojstni kraj največjega mojstra poznoromantičnih samospevov. During the period from 2010 to 2012 the project of a complete renovation of the birthplace of Hugo Wolf was completed and today, under the patronage of the Carinthian Regional Museum, a memory museum and an International Documentation Centre are in operation here. In a short period of time the house became one of the most vital musical, cultural and research centres in Slovenia.During Wolf’s Year we wish to foster awareness of the meaning of our fellow townsman and the richness of his musical heritage with festive concerts and other cultural events. Furthermore, we are aiming to establish the identity of Slovenj Gradec which can present itself with great self-consciousness as the birthplace of the biggest master of the lieder-genre of the late Romantic period. Otroštvo je preživel v okolju, kjer sta več stoletij živela dva naroda in sta se prepletali nemška in slovenska kultura. Hugo Wolf je že kot deček igral klavir in violino ter veljal za čudežno nadarjenega glasbenega otroka z absolutnim posluhom, ki ga je podedoval po očetu Filipu. Celotno družabno življenje v Wolfovi hiši je bilo prežeto z glasbo. Tako je Hugo že kot otrok v očetovem hišnem orkestru igral drugo violino. Temperamentnega mladeniča je zanimala izključno samo glasba. Njegovo samosvojo osebnost pa je močno zaznamoval svetovljanski Dunaj, kjer je začel pospešeno

The festive Year of Hugo WolfThe year 2020 is dedicated to the memory of our fellow townsman, the genius composer Hugo Wolf, who was born in Slovenj Gradec 160 years ago. He spent his childhood in an area where, for many centuries, two nations have lived together and the German and Slovenian cultures have intertwined. Already as a boy Hugo Wolf was playing the piano and the violin and was considered to be a miraculously gifted musical child with an absolute musical ear, inherited from his father Philip. The entire social life in the Wolf house was completely devoted to music. Thus, as a child, Hugo played the second violin in his father’s house orchestra. The vivacious young man was interested only in music. The worldly city of Vienna, where he started to create eagerly, made a strong impression on his unique personality. Due to some unfortunate historical circumstances and political conditions, the great composer was marginalised in Slovenia. By the merit of a handful of enthusiasts he entered into the consciousness of the Slovenian cultural space again in the 1990’s. His recognition began to grow in 1993 when the Hugo Wolf Society of Slovenj Gradec was founded; the initiator and first president was the long-

The Slovenian Postal Service will, on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the birth of the composer Hugo Wolf, publish a commemorative post stamp, an official seal and a first day covert. They were designed by Maja Tomažič. In addition to the philatelic section of the Slovenian Postal Service, the Carinthian Philatelic Society and the Philatelic Society of Slovenj Gradec are preparing a commemorative philatelic exhibition and are publishing a maximum card dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the birth of Hugo Wolf, designed by the architect Borut Bončina. The musical program at the presentation will be performed by the young soprano Tanja Klančnik and the superb pianist Maja Kastratovik.

Ob 160. obletnici rojstva skladatelja Huga Wolfa bo Pošta Slovenije v seriji Znamenite osebnosti izdala priložnostno znamko, žig in ovitek prvega dne. Zasnovala jih je oblikovalka Maja Tomažič. Kot dopolnitev filatelističnega sklopa Pošte Slovenije bosta Koroško filatelistično društvo in Filatelistično društvo Slovenj Gradec pripravili priložnostno filatelistično razstavo ter izdali maksimum kartico, posvečeno 160. obletnici rojstva Huga Wolfa, ki jo je oblikoval arhitekt Borut Bončina. Na predstavitvi bosta glasbeni program izvedli mlada sopranistka Tanja Klančnik in vrhunska pianistka Maja Kastratovik.

The Hugo Wolf Maribor Chamber Choir was founded in 2010 during the 150th anniversary of the birth of the composer Hugo Wolf on the initiative of the Society of German Speaking Women Mostovi – Bridges from Maribor. The main aim of the choir’s activities is to connect different cultures through music, which is also the main guiding topic when choosing literature and preparing concert programs. The choir focuses especially on preserving the memory of forgotten composers and musicians, who were somehow connected with Maribor. 19

Komorni zbor Hugo Wolf Maribor je bil ustanovljen leta 2010 ob 150. obletnici rojstva skladatelja Huga Wolfa na pobudo Društva nemško govorečih žena Mostovi iz Maribora. Glavni cilj delovanja zbora je skozi glasbo povezovati različne kulture, kar je vodilo pri izboru literature in sestavi koncertnih programov. Zbor posveča posebno pozornost obujanju spomina na pozabljene skladatelje in glasbenike, ki so bili kakor koli povezani z Mariborom.

Slavnostna akademija je uvod v praznovanje Wolfovega leta, s katerim bomo počastili 160. obletnico skladateljevega rojstva. Slavnostni govornik, prof. dr. Matjaž Barbo, bo opredelil in pojasnil pomen ter vlogo skladatelja Huga Wolfa v slovenskem in evropskem prostoru. Koncertni program bosta ob spremljavi odlične pianistke Maje Kastratovik izvedla Mešani komorni zbor Carinthia Cantat in Komorni zbor Hugo Wolf Maribor.

Glasbeni spored Mešanega komornega zbora Carinthia Cantat sestavljajo skladbe domačih in tujih avtorjev različnih obdobij in stilov, od renesanse do priredb popularnih uspešnic, svojo pevsko podobo pa zbor gradi predvsem na dveh posebnostih, ki sta rdeča nit njegovega dela. To so skladbe skladatelja Huga Wolfa in koroške ljudske pesmi.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Matjaž Barbo, will define and explain the meaning and role of the composer Hugo Wolf on both the Slovenian and European levels. The concert program will be performed by the Carinthia Cantat Mixed Chamber Choir and the Hugo Wolf Maribor Chamber Choir, accompanied by the exceptional pianist Maja Kastratovik.

The musical repertoire of the Carinthia Cantat Mixed Chamber Choir consists of musical pieces by Slovenian and foreign authors from various periods and styles, ranging from the Renaissance to an arrangement of pop hits, while the singing image of the choir is based mainly on two specialties, which are the common thread of its work. »Duhovna mističnost poznosrednjeveških pesmi je Huga Wolfa v letih 1889/1890 navdihnila za ciklus Španske pesmarice, ki s strastjo izraza spominja na pasijonsko glasbo Bacha in Händla. V ciklu Mörikejevih duhovnih pesmih sta se glasbena miselnost agnostika Huga Wofa in lirična globina posvetnega mistika Eduarda Mörikeja zlili v edinstveno sozvočje, s katerim sta izrazila transcendenco čustev, ki presega meje vseh veroizpovedi.«

Mrakovček Premrakovček is, in this story, faced with a double bind, as he stole the feather of the most beautiful and vainest bird in the whole area - the Šaraptica. The bird gets revenge by locking his singing birds into a cage and she then throws the key into wide buckwheat fields. The musician sets out, with the help of a magic wheel, on a journey through children’s folk

songs and nursery rhymes where Anzej Panzej, Tinčica Minčica and other heroes come to life and help him to find the key. Although different times and topics are depicted, which today’s children do not know, starting with a harvest in a field, to shenanigans at fairs, and a story about locked up birds and a quest for their release, the performance tries to teach them about how, even today, one can get the real key: with persistence.

izštevanke, v katerih oživijo Anzej Panzej, Tinčica Minčica in drugi junaki, ki mu pomagajo pri iskanju ključa. Čeprav gre za prikaz drugega časa in vsebin, ki jih danes otroci ne poznajo več, od žetve na polju, do semenjskih norčij, pa zgodba o zaprtih pticah in trudu za njihovo izpustitev otroke skuša učiti o nečem, kar do pravega ključka privede še danes: o vztrajnosti.

Mrakovček Premrakovček se v tej zgodbi znajde v veliki zagati, saj je ukradel pero najlepše in najošabnejše ptice daleč naokoli – Šaraptice. Ta se mu maščuje tako, da njegove ptice pevke zaklene v kletko, ključ pa odvrže v široka ajdova polja. Godec se s pomočjo čarobnega kolesa odpravi na potovanje skozi otroške ljudske pesmice in

Kot solistka bo nastopila izvrstna mezzosopranistka Nuška Drašček, simfonični del sporeda pa bomo odprli z delom še enega slavljenca, tudi povezanega s Slovenijo, Ludwiga van Beethovna.

Seminar mednarodne solopevske šole Hugo Wolf je namenjen mladim interpretom vokalne glasbene literature samospeva s poudarkom na opusu Huga Wolfa. Udeležujejo se ga študenti zaključnih letnikov glasbenih akademij in konservatorijev iz Slovenije in tujine. V tradicionalni vsakoletni šoli se je v preteklosti zvrstilo veliko število nadarjenih mednarodnih umetnikov, med katerimi so tudi nekatere današnje zvezde svetovnih odrov. S koncertnimi programi se nato radi vračajo na oder koncertne dvorane v Wolfovi hiši, kar pomeni pomembno promocijo Slovenj Gradca in Slovenije v tujini. Seminar je mogoče spremljati tudi kot pasivni

udeleženec/-ka, kar najmlajšim in nadarjenim glasbenikom, ne le pevcem, omogoča, da spoznajo metodologijo dela na seminarjih.

Hugo Wolf International Lied Seminar is aimed at young artists of vocal musical literature of the lied genre with special emphasis on the opus of Hugo Wolf. Participants are senior students of music academies and conservatoires from Slovenia and abroad. Numerous talented international artists have participated at the traditional annual school in the past, among them some stars of international stages of today. They like to return to the stage of the concert hall in Wolf’s house, which means an importation contribution to the promotion of Slovenj Gradec and Slovenia abroad. It is also possible to follow the seminar as a passive participant, which offers the youngest and most

talented musicians, and not only singers, to familiarise themselves with working methods at seminars.

Kratki klavirski skladbi Uspavanka ter Šala in igra s skupnim naslovom Iz otroštva sta med sabo povezani mladostni deli Huga Wolfa, ki ju je komponiral 20. maja 1878 v Slovenj Gradcu. Sta tenkočuten portret dveh nasprotujočih si dejavnikov otroštva: zmožnosti brezskrbne pozabe in sposobnosti izkusiti nebrzdano veselje. Notni album dopolnjujeta kratek uvod z opisom skladateljeve življenjske zgodbe, njegovega rojstnega mesta Slovenj Gradca in spominskega muzeja v rojstni hiši na slovenjgraškem Glavnem trgu ter zgoščenka s posnetkom obeh skladb, ki ga

je pripravila pobudnica projekta, pianistka Maja Kastratovik. V Wolfovem jubilejnem letu bomo publikacijo brezplačno razdelili slovenskim glasbenim šolam, s ciljem navdušiti najmlajše za glasbo največjega skladateljskega genija, rojenega na slovenskih tleh.

The short piano songs Lullaby and Jokes and Games with their common title From Childhood are interlinked pieces of the young Hugo Wolf, composed on the 20th of May 1878 in Slovenj Gradec. They are a subtle portrait of two opposing factors of childhood: the ability to enjoy carefree oblivion and the ability to experience uncontrolled joy. The sheet music edition is accompanied by a short introduction of the life story of the composer, his birth town Slovenj Gradec and of the memorial museum in his birthplace on the Main Square in Slovenj Gradec, as well as with a CD of recordings of both pieces, prepared by the initiator of the

project, the pianist Maja Kastratovik. During the anniversary year of Hugo Wolf this publication will be distributed free of charge to all Slovenian music schools, the aim being to inspire the youngest to explore the music of the greatest composer genius born on Slovenian soil.

Diao Ke je tenorist in izredni profesor na Konservatoriju za glasbo v Wuhanu na Kitajskem. Kot tenorist se posveča raziskovanju del Huga Wolfa in si prizadeva za njegovo glasbeno popularizacijo v Aziji. Maja Kastratovik je eminentna pianistka in pedagoginja, ki je svoj navdih našla tudi v čarobnih notah Huga Wolfa. Zanjo je vedno znova poseben privilegij in užitek, kadar lahko interpretira ta dela v njegovi rojstni hiši.Na koncertnem večeru bomo prisluhnili izbranim samospevom iz Wolfove glasbene zakladnice.

Diao Ke is a tenor and associate professor at the Conservatoire of Music in Wuhan, China. As a tenor, lately he has put special emphasis within his research on the work of Hugo Wolf and is striving for greater popularity of Hugo Wolf in the Asian music world. Maja Kastratovik is an eminent pianist and a teacher, who has also found her inspiration in the magical notes of Hugo Wolf. For her it is always a special privilege and delight to perform these works in his birthplace.At the concert evening we will hear a selection of lieders from the rich musical heritage of Hugo Wolf.

A quick glance at the lineup of Trio Klavis might lead to the conclu- sion that the sound of this ensemble is not necessarily related to classical music. Formed at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the three musicians Sabina Hasanova (piano), Jenny Lippl (violin) and Miha Ferk (saxophone) present themselves as an experimental friendly chamber music ensemble that follows its own musical path. V Wolfovi rojstni hiši danes delujeta spominski muzej ter mednarodni informacijski in dokumentacijski center. Skladateljeva rojstna hiša je središče glasbene kulture v Slovenj Gradcu, hkrati pa v Mestni občini Slovenj Gradec izjemen kulturni spomenik lokalnega pomena. V hiši ima svoj sedež tudi Društvo Hugo Wolf Slovenj Gradec.Minule obletnice skladateljevega rojstva so zaznamovali s prireditvami, razstavami, koncerti in publikacijami. Ob 100. obletnici skladateljevega rojstva so na pročelju hiše odkrili spominsko ploščo, akademski slikar Karel Pečko pa je izdelal velik portret

Today, the birthplace of Hugo Wolf hosts a memorial museum and an international information and documentation centre. The composer’s birthplace is the centre of musical culture in Slovenj Gradec and, at the same time, it represents an exceptional cultural monument of local importance for the municipality of Slovenj Gradec. Furthermore, the Hugo Wolf Society of Slovenj Gradec has its seat here.The past anniversaries of the composer’s birth were celebrated with events, exhibitions, concerts and publications. On the 100th anniversary of the birth of the composer, a memorial plaque was set up on the front of the house. The academic painter Karel Pečko painted a big portrait of Hugo Wolf, which today decorates the acoustic concert hall in his birthplace. On the 130th anniversary, a bronze bust of the composer was unveiled at the front of the house; it is the work of academic sculptor Mirsad Begić. On the 150th anniversary, the memorial museum and the Hugo Wolf International Documentation Centre were renovated and set up within the project Mirroring images - sounds of the past.

Huga Wolfa, ki danes krasi akustično koncertno dvorano v njegovi rojstni hiši. Ob 130. obletnici so na pročelju hiše odkrili bronasti doprsni kip skladatelja, delo akademskega kiparja Mirsada Begića. Ob 150. obletnici pa so s projektom Zrcaljenje podob – oživljeni zven preteklosti obnovili in vzpostavili spominski muzej in mednarodni dokumentacijski center Huga Wolfa. Skladatelj Hugo Wolf se je rodil pred 160 leti. Njegovemu delu se bomo poklonili s pestrim programom prireditev, s katerimi bomo skozi vse leto 2020 proslavili to pomembno obletnico.The composer Hugo Wolf was born 160 years ago. We will pay tribute to his work with a diverse program of events to celebrate this important anniversary throughout 2020.
