Powerful storytelling & breathtaking danceBE swept away by unrivalled storytelling, dance and live music with Northern Ballet at Hanley’s Regent Theatre on Tuesday, June 16th, and Wednesday, June 17th.

‘Madame Butterfly’ is choreographed by Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, and is one of the company’s most popular full-length productions.

In this heartbreakingly-tragic ballet, audiences will be transported to Japan, where the doomed love-affair between American naval lieutenant, Pinkerton, and his young Japanese bride, Butterfly, begins.

Madly in love with and prepared to sacrifice everything, Butterfly’s world falls apart, when she is betrayed and forced into a dramatic climax.

Recreated specifically fr the new tour, ‘Madame Butterfly’ is a two-act ballet, featuring all-new ets, and is performed to the famous Puccini score, played by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

The programme also features ‘Perpetuum Mobile’, choreographed by Scottish Ballet, Artistic Director, Christopher Hampson.

The 17-minute-long work provides an excellent introduction to the technical and athletic talents of Northern Ballet’s dancers, showcasing the incredible strength and prowess of the company.

Recently awarded Best Company at the European Taglioni Ballet Awards, Northern Ballet specialises in creating and performing world-class, classical story-ballets.

Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?THIS month, we discuss the many complexities which can arise from NOT making a Will.WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OR HOPE!

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting or Single.

MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse). The amount a spouse can inherit is restricted to an amount set by the Government.

THE POPULAR BELIEF that a spouse automatically inherits everything is simply not true. This is because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules inherit, with the rising values of Estates, the SPOUSE'S SHARE could be the smallest one.

FACT: If you have not made a Will, even your life insurance policies will not be paid until probate has been granted, unless they are written into trust! (Probate will take many months, sometimes years, to be granted!).

FACT: If your Children are orphaned and you have not appointed a guardian in a Will, then Social Services will decide who looks after them, including allocating them to Foster Parents).

FACT: If there are no surviving members of your family, the whole Estate would go to the Crown (Government).

COHABITING: Thousands of people live together without getting married. Unfortunately, most think that, after a few years together or if they have become a Common Law husband or wife and have same rights as a married person. Let there be no doubt about this. If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance you are known as a Cohabitee and do not have the same rights as a married person. The general term, Common Law, means law-based

judicial decisions and custom.

SO, if you are Cohabitee, the information on single people is more appropriate to you.

SINGLE: If a single person dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated and can often involve relatives you have never even met!

HERE WE GO... first, you children will inherit your whole Estate - if there are no surviving children, next in line are your grandchildren - if you have no grandchildren, then both your parents - if both have died before you, then your brothers and/or nieces - if none, then your cousins (however far removed) and, if no cousins, everything goes to the Government... phew!

IF you are single and without a Will, I can hear you are thinking: 'Well, that's OK, it will go to my children, anyway'). That may be partly true, but what is also true is that it will take months and, possibly, years to sort out your affairs (obtain Probate), and the Solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work. This is money that, for the sake of making your Will (£69), you could have left your Children!

Even if you have no Children or close family, many people would want their Estate to go to CLOSE FRIENDS or a CHARITY, rather than the GOVERNMENT OR UNKNOWN RELATIONS.

Will you be be taking on the 72-feet-high, 'white-knuckle' ride for a 360-degree tour of the skies?

11 The latest Concert Night to be presented by the North Staffs. Organ and Keyboard Club at Wolstanton High Street Club on Thursday, June 4th, features Kevin Grunill, one of the UK's finest keyboard exponents. Such is the extent of his musicianship that he ie equally at home on modern, electronic instruments, as well as the more traditional pipe-organ and piano. Kevin was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in 1972, and had shown an interest in all matters of a musical nature at an early age. The NSOKC was founded in 1969 by a group of electronic organ enthusiasts. Concert Nights are held on the first Thursday of each month , starting at 8pm.

13 Fairport Convention was the first - and is still the best! The inventor of British folk-rock, its ground-breaking album, 'Liege & Lief ', was voted the best album of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners. Now, 50 years later, the group remains one of the most entertaining bands on the live music scene. With an intimate mix of recent material and classics from its unrivalled back-catalogue, Fairport Convention makes its first visit to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre on Monday, June 8th.

22 With the warmer weather of Summer, do take the time to ensure that your pets stay safe, advises Newcastle-based Croft Veterinary Clinic. Heat can be a real killer for many animals, and, for this reason, it's a good idea to walk dogs in the morning or evening (before 8am or after 5pm). If you have space, canines love cooling down in a paddling-pool. Frozen ice-treats are also a good wayof cooling down your dog on a hot day. Rabbits and guinea pigs are very susceptible to problems arising from exceesive heat, because (unlike dogs), if they overheat, they cannot sweat effectively or sweat to cool themselves down. It is vitally important that they have access to shade at all times, plus cool water (preferably in a bowl [not a bottle]).

NURSERY TIME 2015The best start in life!'TO stimulate and educate the children we care for': the mission statement of Roosters Day Nursery, where the fully-qualified staff has one, single objective in common with you, the parent, and that is a desire to provide the best start in life for your child/children.A more idyllic location (on the edge of Betley Village, situated in rural countryside, with pleasant views) could not be found than that enjoyed by this 44-place nursery, which opened in 1997, and provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child."Our aim is to allow your child to gain understanding and knowledge by by learning through play," explains Ruth Morris, Officer-in-Charge.The children are nurtured in three groups, age-dependent, and each group is looked after by a qualified team of caring staff, responding to and fulfilling the needs of each child. The nursery's secure, outdoor play-area provides its charges with an ideal opportunity for daily, physical development, and the garden offers both soft and hard play-areas, providing outdoor experiences (whatever the weather).Ofsted-registered Roosters is a 'feeder' nursery for all, three schools in the area (Betley, Meadows and John Offley), offering a 'wraparound service' to, and from, them; additionally, it provides Afterschool care for John Offley children, and on-site care for Betley and Meadows.

PREPARING YOUNGSTERS FOR ENTRY INTO PRIMARY SCHOOLWHEN considering their children's entry into local day nurseries and playgroups, it is absolutely imperative that parents consider a number of essential points.

For, the present demand for places is greater than ever, so it really is important that you act as soon as possible, in order to ensure that your child is accepted by the venue of your choice.

Indeed, some experts recommend that women seek out a nurseryas soon as they know they are pregnant!

All day nurseries have to be registered with their local authority's Social Services Department, and must satisfy strict requirements, concerning ratios of staff to children, space per child and numbers of qualified staff.

In essence, there are two, main questions to be answered: first, will your child be looked after by regular, full-time staff, and, second, does the nursery offer a stimulating environment?

Preparing youngsters for entry into primary school is the task which day nurseries are allocated by society - and, needless to say, it is a very demanding one!

It is the paramount aim of day nurseries to provide a happy, family environment in which each child is encouraged to grow and develop in every way.

In addition to instructing pre-schoolers in each aspect of the educational

curriculum, they must offer facilities which have been designed with every consideration of child-safety in mind!

Importantly, research shows that the adult-to-child ratio is an essential factor in determining the success of nursery education.

Kevin Grunill in concertTHE latest Concert Night to be presented by the North Staffs. Organ and Keyboard Club at Wolstanton High Street Club on Thursday, June 4th, features Kevin Grunill.

Born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in 1972, Kevin has rapidly built a fine reputation as one of the UK's finest keyboard exponents.

Such is the extent of his musicianship that he is equally at home on the modern electronic instruments, as well as the more traditional pipe organ and piano.

One of the highlights in Kevin's career came in 1997, when he was chosen to be the new resident organist at the North Pier, Blackpool, entertaining hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers in a town that has a long tradition in presenting the very best in organ music.

His duties in Blackpool often saw him at the console of the famous Wurlitzer organ in the Tower Ballroom, continuing his residency there until 2008.

With a constant number of concert-dates throughout the country, plus frequent appearances on national radio and television programmes, this likeable and easy-going Yorkshireman is winning an ever-increasing number of admirers (reflected in the consistently-rising demand for his recordings).

The North Staffs. Organ and Keyboard Club was founded in 1969 by a group of electronic organ enthusiasts.

Concert Nights, featuring a top, professional organist, are held on the first Thursday of each month, starting at 8pm.

"We aim to give a balance of type of player (modern, electronic, theatre, middle-of-the-road etc.) and a variety of makes of organ, to cover a wide range of minimal tastes from month to month," explains NCOKC's Tony Lawton.

Subscription costs £5 (single) and £9 (dual), with further information available by telephoning (01782) 858907.

Concert admission is priced at £3 (members) and £4 (visitors).

You can email: [email protected], and also visit the website: http://www.organfax.co.uk/clubs/northstaffs.html

MeMbership is growing here!!THIS popular venue in Newcastle Borough continues to lead the way in North Staffordshire clubland.

In short, Bradwell Workingmen's Club is very successful and its membership is growing!

"There have been no great changes here, because none are needed," explained Club Secretary, Lesley Hill, adding: "The club is run on a very tight budget, using economic 'good sense', and we are very lucky to have a brilliant, second-to-none management committee and excellent, very dedicated volunteers, so we simply get on with enjoying ourselves!"

"We have just renegotiated another, 60-year lease, and the future for Bradwell WMC is looking secure.

"2014 was a highly-successful year for us, and we had a exceptional Christmas party for pensioners, complete with brilliant, sit-down meal for everyone.

"Also, we hosted the AGM of the North Staffs., South Cheshire & North Wales branch of the CIU (Club & Institute Union),

The club is staging its traditional day-trip to Blackpool in July; however, there's always something exciting going on at the Bradwell Lane venue.

Concert Secretary, Harvey Hulse, ensures that members and bona fide guests can enjoy premier-class live acts on Saturday and Sunday evenings, and Monday Night

Prize Bingo is a genuine favourite with all ages.

"Because no cash is involved, Monday nights are ideal for everyone, featuring excellent prizes for children, as well as adults," explained Lesley, who became Club Secretary in January, 2013.

Indeed, bingo is a perennially-

popular winner at the club on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus, of course, Sunday lunchtime.

The enhanced Games Room features snooker and pool tables and two dartsboards (for Super League and

Thursday League games), with walls pleasingly adorned with numerous, sporting photographs.

Bowls (outdoor and indoor) play a big role at Bradwell WMC, which hosts meetings by the local branch of the charitable organisation, 'The Buffs' (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes), while the North Staffs. Accordion Club

holds its band rehearsals here on Tuesdays.

The well-appointed Function Room is available for hire, with details from Club Steward, John Bould.

Congleton's Daneside Theatre is playing host to the latest production of NOMADS Theatre Company, 'A Lady of Letters', one of Alan Bennett's 'Talking Heads', in June.

She fills her time and her life by writing letters, usually of complaint, but this can get you into unexpected trouble and have unforeseen consequences!

Including a selection of modern, classic monologues from other, well-known writers, this NOMADS production is

OUT & ABOUT IN 2015

CA N A L S I D E AT T RAC T I O N S

Rutter stars in Miller's TaleTHE critically-acclaimed partnership of director, Jonathan Miller, and Northern Broadsides' founder, Barrie Rutter, has returned to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre.

In his second collaboration with the award-winning company (following 2013's 'Rutherford & Son'), Jonathan Miller brings his remarkable talent for detailed human observation to the play which he describes as "the most interesting Shakespeare ever wrote".

'King Lear' is the story of a family at war with itself.

Barrie Rutter plays the ageing and deeply-flawed monarch who wrecks his relationship with his three daughters, and, in doing so, loses everything.

Miller has previously directed the play for the Lincoln Center Theater, in New York (starring Christopher Plummer); the Old Vic, in London (with Eric Porter); and for BBC TV (with Michael Hordern).

Although Shakespeare set Lear in pre-Christian England, the director has always staged the play in the year when it was written, 1603.

"Here is a play in which a monarch who has always 'slenderly known himself' has irresponsibly divided his kingdom in the same year that James I united the kingdoms of England and Scotland," he says.

"In fact, the play is a straightfoward, elegant representation of the relationships between monarch and

their subjects on the one hand and comparable relationship between fathers and their offspring.

"As always with Northern Broadsides, the conversational quality of the actors' performances allows me to emphasise the intelligibility of these complementary relationships.

"In addition to this, we can also recognise that the relationship between Edgar and Edmund has an intriguing similarity to the conflict between Jesus and the Devil."

Northern Broadsides' trademark energy, simplicity and down-to-earth performance-style has won over a whole, new generation of Shakespeare fans, and this production is intimate, moving and utterly believable, containing a raw, emotional power.

'King Lear' runs until Saturday, June 13th, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on Saturdays 6th and 13th.

Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Green light for July celebrations!!THERE'S so much to enjoy at this supremely-traditional, country pub that's it's hard to know where to begin!

Nestling in the heart of the Churnet Valley, The Black Lion at Consall Forge, near Wetley Rocks, is a positive delight to discover; when sat in the beer garden, you can appreciate how beautiful the Staffordshire countryside is.

Getting to The Black Lion takes readers across the Caldon Canal and over the Churnet Valley Railway line, with picturesque Consall station approximately 100 yards away.

Licensee, Jason Purcell, is celebrating his sixth anniversary as landlord in July, and, in addition to the pub's own mega-beer festival (starting on Friday, July 10th, and running over no less than three days), he is offering regulars and newcomers alike top-class, live entertainment every weekend during that month!

"In addition, we stage acoustic nights on alternate Tuesdays," said Jason.

"On Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st, we shall be staging our usual hog-roast and barbecue," added Jason, who also owns The Saltwells Inn (located in the centre of Saltwells nature reserve), at the heart of the Black Country, in Dudley.

Possessing no less than nine handpulls, The Black Lion is, deservedly, acclaimed for its traditional, cask-conditioned beers, and it offers (as its regular, complemented by constantly-changing 'guests') award-winning 'Black Hole', produced

by Peakstones Rock Brewing Co. Ltd., which is based at the nearby Staffordshire Moorlands village of Alton.

Richly-dark-brown in colour, with a smoky, dark-chocolate smell, 'Black Hole' (4.8% ABV) is a porter ale which was awarded the title of 'Regional Beer of the Year' (strong mild category) 2011 by West Midlands CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), and Peakstones Rock's brews, including best bitter, 'Nemesis' (3.8% ABV) and premium ale, 'Oblivion' (5.5% ABV), are popular with trad. beer aficionados at the hostelry.

As an added bonus, all CAMRA members

benefit from a 20p. discount on a pint of real ale all day and every day!

Open all day, every day (12 noon-11pm, Monday-Saturday, and 12 noon-10.30pm, Sunday), The Black Lion was voted 'Pub of the Month' for August, 2009, by CAMRA's Potteries branch, and 'Pub of the Season' (Winter 2013) by its Staffordshire Moorlands sub-branch.

Of course, the pub is also famed for serving great food in the relaxed atmosphere of its dining room; only the finest ingredients (many produced locally) are used in the menus (including the children's one).

Food is served seven days a week: 12 noon-3pm & 5.30pm-8.30pm (Monday-Friday), 12 noon-8.30pm, and, on Sunday, 12 noon-4pm (traditional Sunday lunch and 'Bostin Baps') and 5.30pm-8.30pm

(main menu).

To avoid disappointment, advance-bookings are preferred for evening meals, and there is a 20% discount on bookings for tables of four (Monday-Friday).

The Children's Area has adult seating, so that parents can keep an eye on their children, while relaxing with a drink and enjoying a view of the surrounding woodland.

Family-run business boasts an idyllic location"WE have a canal boat moored at Nantwich, and regard The Barbridge as our 'local', and we love it."

Thanks to its lovely views across the canal, this Cheshire hostelry really is the perfect place for a drink and a meal, following a relaxing stroll!

Yes, The Olde Barbridge Inn offers readers an idyllic location alongside the Shropshire Union Canal, a short walk from Barbridge Marina and around five miles from the historic market town of Nantwich and just six miles from the beautiful village of Tarporley.

You will be greeted by a warm, friendly atmosphere, amiably created through the venue's new refurbishment, elegant interior and, of course, welcoming staff.

This family-run business offers attractions to suit all tastes and every age, and these include an impressively-large beer garden and a children's play-area, while the Old Chester Road bar and restaurant is also acclaimed for its superb, home-made food and great selection of traditional, cask-conditioned beers.

Available seven days a week (12 noon-9.30pm, Monday-Thursday; 12 noon-10pm, Friday

& Saturday, and 12 noon-8.30pm, Sunday), the culinary fare at The Olde Barbridge genuinely is fresh - and its roast Sunday lunches and dinners are

praised as the best around!

Indeed, the majority of the produce is sourced locally for its menus' classic, British dishes (served with a contemporary 'twist'), and the excellence of the food is wonderfully complemented by premier-class wines from around the world (including Australia, Chile, France, Italy and Spain).

As an added bonus, The Olde Barbridge Inn offers a special seniors menu for over-60s customers between 12 noon and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

All the dishes are freshly prepared in its kitchen; so, if you have any special requests, please do not hesitate to ask.

In the bar, 'real ale' aficionados and novices alike will be delighted to encounter a selection of fine beers from the area's own, local brewery, Woodlands Ales (located just down the road in Nantwich).

The delights of al fresco livingTHERE is nothing nicer than flinging open the doors on a Summer morning, knowing that it is going to be a 'sizzler' of a day (and the weather's looking good, too!).

Suddently, all plans of going out, completing long-delayed tasks and catching up on work disappear out of the window, as there's only one place you're going to be spending your day - and that's in the garden!

Outdoor loving and eating can be incredibly liberating, especially as the majority of us spend so much time cooped up indoors all week.

JUNE 2015 | 19sales: 01782 461711

Outside, everything operates at a different pace, slowing down to a Mediterranean modus vivandi (things will happen, but not right now!).

Even the food that we choose to consume outside is easy, compared to the complicated recipes that we religiously challenge ourselves with.

We 'graze', rather than formally sitting down to a set meal, and, whilst we lounge around, feasting on sumptuous olives and warm bread, we do the unthinkable - we actually speak to each other!

Apart from the tapas-style 'grazing' which lends itself to Summer eating, there is, of course, the kind of outdoor dining that just screams 'sunshine' (or wind or rain, if you're a true die-hard [or unlucky or sado-masochistic!]) - the good, old barbecue.

In recent years, we have become a lot more 'BBQ-savvy', and the days of incinerated sausages and food-poisoning are (hopefully) a thing of the past.

Cooking on the outdor grill has been a new lease of life, and it's no longer all about the meat.

(There are some excellent, vegetarian recipes that work brilliantly on the barbecue, adding an interesting, fresh twist to the traditional 'burger in a bun).

'MIDSUMMER MADNESS' - AND LOTS, LOTS MORE!!MYRIAD attractions await visitors to the Staffordshire towns of Leek and Cheadle during the coming months.

Over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, June 20th/21st, 'Midsummer Madness' celebrates everything that is wierd and wonderful in and around Leek ('Queen of the Moorlands').

Starting at 10am, the attractions include guided walks, double sunsets, parades, live music and street entertainment, and admission is free!

Sunday, June 28th, sees an event commemorating the 25th anniversary of Ladderedge Country Park, which is sited off the A53 (Newcastle Road) to the south-west of Leek town centre.

There will be lots going on, including wildflower trails, willow sculpture, birdbox-making, crafts, toasting marshmallows and meeting owls.

Running from 12 noon to 4pm, the event is signposted from the car-park of Ladderedge behind Staffordshire County Council highways depot; parking is limited, so additional spaces will be available at Westwood Golf Course (located on the other side of the A53).

Prior to that, Leek's Foxlowe Arts Centre, in Market Place, Stockwell Street, is hosting a performance by Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble (directed by Joe Broughton and featuring 50 musicians in a frenzy of sound and excitement) on Thursday, June 4th, starting at 8pm.

"Tremendously exhilarating and joyously life-affirming. Here, you'll find the whole gamut of folk culture and its aural tradition and much more - Irish session staples played as though life itself depended on it, Fairport tunes played as if by a Chinese orchestra, breezy Latino brass meanderings, skirling percussion, swooning string syncopations, moments of tense repose where (say) a lone whistle takes centre-stage, sparkily extravagent jazzy gestures, and so forth," enthused Netrhythms.

Tickets are priced at £14; telephone (01538) 483741/(01538) 386112, or visit www.leekartsfestival.co.uk

On Saturday, June 13th, South Moorlands Leisure Centre, at Cheadle, is staging a 'Himalayan Balsam Bash', between 10am and 3.30pm.

You can join the Friends of Cecilly Brook and Hales Hall Pool at the Allen Street venue to pull Himalayan Balsam; come as long as you like, or spend the whole day there!

Readers are advised to wear old clothes, stout boots and long-sleeved clothing, and to bring along work-gloves (if you have them!).

Meanwhile, The Swan, at Town End, Cheadle, is offering multiple attractions through June and July.

These include live music with chanteuse, Kimberley (singing music old and new) on Saturday, June 6th, starting at 9pm; a Charity Quiz Night in aid of Cancer Research UK (June 13th, 9pm); Open Mic Night (June 20th, 8pm); live music with Tom Nicholson (9pm), and a Charity Psychic Event on Sunday, July 5th, commencing at 9pm; further details are available on (01538) 751832 or via email: [email protected]

Following the success of 2014's Leek Street Fest (a street festival taking place throughout the town centre), the organisers are planning a bigger and even better event for Sunday, August 2nd, 2015, starting at 10am.

Live music, specialist markets, children's activities and workshops, hot street-food and street entertainment will all help to celebrate the beginning of the Summer Holidays!

WEDDINGS & ALL OCCASIONSCosting receptionsMANY people would aver that it is sagacious to open a 'wedding account' with your bank to facilitate the auditing of costs. You should think about numbers of guests and the type of service as soon as possible, so that you know what you are budgeting for.Are you going to have the traditional, morning service with a luncheon for close family, to be followed by a larger function during the evening, or do you prefer a late-afternoon service immediately moves on to the evening reception?(The latter is the better bet, in terms of economy, since you will, then, have only one event to manage and pay for).Naturally, a weekday wedding will also reduce costs, but many guests will also find this too restrictive.A much more contentious - but increasingly-considered - suggestion is to invite guests to make a financial contribution to your 'Big Day' (possibly in lieu of the more conventional wedding-present).However, you phrase and arrange it, it WILL reduce significantly the cost of your wedding-reception!

The heat is on!AT last, the prospect of warm, lazy days and balmy barbecue-weather!But, as the weather warms up, do take the time to make sure your pets stay safe. Here, The Croft Veterinary Clinic, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, looks at a few steps you can take to keep them fit and well.Heat can be a real killer for many pets, and, for this reason, it's a good idea to walk dogs in the morning or evening (before 8am or after 5pm).If you have space, dogs love cooling down in a paddling-pool, and frozen ice-treats are also a good way of cooling down your canine chum on a hot day.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are very susceptible to problems arising from excessive heat, because, if they overheat, they (unlike dogs) cannot pant effectively or sweat to cool themselves down.It is vitally important that they have access to shade at all time, plus cool water - preferably in a bowl (not a bottle).Factor 50! Cats are natural sunbathers, and for many felines, this causes no problems. However, cats with white ear-tips and noses are prone to sunburn, and this can lead to cancerous changes over time.High-factor sun-block applied to the at-risk areas help to minimise this risk; call the vet, if

you are worried.Grass awns of meadow grasses are an issue at this time of the year; they are cmmonly trapped in dogs' ears, and may also become embedded in the feet or other areas. In view of this, thorough inspection of the coat is advisable, following walks.Flies are another summer hazard; they are very attracted to rabbits, if they have soiled bottoms, where they lay their eggs which tapidly

hatch out into flesh-eating maggots.

It is very important t check bunnies' bottoms on a daily basis and call The Croft at once, if you are anxious. Finally, please remember that the temperature in cars can rise rapidly, and death from heat-

stroke can follow in minutes, so pets should NEVER be left unattended in cars.

A MISSION TO SAVE!!"I HAVE visited the Animal Lifeline kennels, and seen for myself what a fantastic job they do. It is obvious just how much they love their dogs and want to help them."

Thus, TV's Pet Rescue Presenter, and Patron, Wendy Turner-Webster, on this Stoke-on-Trent-based voluntary group and registered charity, which was founded almost 40 years ago.

Appositely-named Animal Lifeline's purpose is to save abandoned and unwanted dogs and puppies, and, then, find them new homes and loving owners.

Each year, the charity rescues and re-homes around 300 canines, and has saved more than 1,000 over the years; it always has at least 100 dogs in its Serendipity Kennels, awaiting re-homing.

It never has any dogs put down (unless on veterinary grounds), and those that cannot be found new homes are kept in the sanctuary as part of the Animal Lifeline 'family'.

Normally re-homing dogs only in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, the charity is self-supporting, and relies on its own fund-raising efforts and (much-appreciated) public donations to maintain its vital activities.

Located at Cellarhead (on the A520 Leek Road), Animal Lifeline's Serendipity Kennels were built in 2001, following a significant bequest to the charity from Douglas Hodges.

The kennels (which house up to 100 dogs) are adjacent to the live-in manager's house, and open out into large, fenced paddocks, where the dogs can walk and run free for exercise and fresh air.

Enquiries about the kennels (open daily from 9.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-3.30pm [or by appointment]) should be made to co-managers, Karen and Steve Woodward,

on (01782) 551540.

Animal Lifeline has two charity shops (located at 1, Church Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme [open 9.30-3pm, Monday-Friday, & 9.30am-1pm, Saturday], and 31, Bennett Precinct, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent [9.30am-4pm, Monday-Saturday]).

The shops accept used and new items, especially good-quality clothing, shoes, bags, books, CDs and DVDs, toys, gifts, bric-a-brac, jewellery, small furniture (such as coffee-tables) and small electrical items (incuding radios and table-lamps).

Animal Lifeline's work can only be achieved through your generosity, either be volunteering to help it, giving goods or via donation (enquiries about which can be made on 07790-079025 [9am-5pm, Monday-Friday]).

OUT & ABOUT IN 2015

Tales to be treasured!THIS Summer sees the New Vic Theatre hosting a five-week-long festival of new work inspired by, and celebrating, the Staffordshire Hoard, with 19 new commissions from some of the UK's leading writers and artists.

Launching the festival is the main stage double-bill of 'Unearthed/The Gift'; the first play being an archaeological 'whodunnit' written and directed by New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins.

Fresh from the critically-acclaimed 'Around the World in Eighty Days' and 'The Borrowers', her latest play tells the story of of the Staffordshire Hoard since its discovery in 2009.

'Unearthed' is a documentary-drama in the New Vic tradition, and we hear the words of the metal detectorist who found an astonishing hoard of gold in a Staffordshire field, of the archaeologists who excavated it, the historians, conservationists and experts who try to unravel its meanings.

How was the Hoard hidden? Who by? And why?

It's an historical thriller, a crime-scene looking for a solution. We know how it ends. Now, we must piece together the beginning.

The second play, The Gift', is an epic of romance and adventure from playwright and novelist, Jemma Kennedy, and directed by Gemma Fairlie.

In the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, a kingly gift sparks a deadly struggle for the future.

When the warriors return victorious from battle, they bring with them a great gift - gold, stripped from the weapons of their defeated enemies.

They plan to use the treasure to build a new way of life and to gain the favour of their king.

But the women think the price is too high, and are determined to hold on to the world they know.

And, when the argument turns murderous, each must choose their own fate, risking all they have for freedom and for love.

'Unearthed/The Gift' runs from Saturdays, June 20th, to July 25th, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on June 27th and July 18th and 25th.

Tickets are available from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, and online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Every guarantee honoured over 47 years!

FOR more than 40 years, Congleton Glass has taken great pride in adhering to its original ethos of good service, premier quality and excellent workmanship.

Since the family business was established in 1968, it has acquired a nonpareil reputation for providing its customers with the highest-quality windows and doors.

When the business first opened its doors 46 years ago, it comprised just one man and a single van; however, it has (deservedly) expanded to the point where it is, now, one of the busiest glazing companies in the town, serving clients not only in Cheshire, but also throughout the North-West.

As a double-bonus for readers, Congleton Glass sells the very best in windows and doors from such top-rated brands in the industry as KAT, Nova and Rockdoor, but offers them at eminently-affordable prices.

The Royle Street business, then, complements this by installing all products to correct standards,

adhering to strict guidelines on energy-efficiency and ventilation (as set out by FENSA [the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme]).

This insistence upon first-class products AND service has, necessarily, meant that it has outlasted numerous, other companies unable to match its sheer skill and invaluable, decades-long experience, which has allowed it to identify the kind of quality and value that will enhance and protect a client's property.

Quite simply, customers may locate cheaper products on the market, but these lack the service, support and longevity which Congleton Glass offers.

Pay a visit to Congleton Glass (located by the River Dane, close to the very heart of the town centre) and you will discover that its stock represents the very latest in window-technology, while its doors provide security, longevity and style.

All of the company's PVCu products come with a redoubtable, 10-year warranty.

Additionally, Congleton Glass features a pleasingly-diverse range of miscellaneous services, including the supply of materials, broken-window-repairs and cut-glass and plastics.

FENSA was set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies, in response to Building Regulations for double-glazing companies in England and Wales.

When replacing windows and

5Be thoughtful!! IF you are intending to turn your house into a

supremely attractive home, it's important to realise that it doesn't cost a fortune!Indeed, it costs no money whatsoever to rearrange the furniture, but this simple, domestic act can make a world of difference - as long as it is done thoughtfully. The key to success is thinking about how you use each piece of furniture (whether it's a small table which is used merely to display your car-keys, or a large sofa that is a favourite spot, upon which to watch television), and ensuring that it is fulfilling its purpose. But it is important not to feel inhibited about 'your space'; try mixing old and new pieces, or experimenting with striking aesthetics alongside more simple, muted features.Sorting out a jumble of clutter can make you feel more in-control of your domicile. So, remove everything from a room and, then, put it back in, omitting what you don't require ('losing' clutter will allow the remaining details to become much more important).Lighting forms the 'bones' of a room, and insufficient attention is paid to it.It can bring out different colours and textures, and can be used to create different zones within a single space (via floor- and table-lamps or pendant lights), catering for particular moods and functions.

Underdogs & Midlands spirit'TRANKLEMENTS' is a funny, inspiring solo performance about underdogs and Midlands spirit written and performed by Olivier Award nominee and Edinburgh Fringe favourite, Caroline Horton, at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre, as part of its festival of plays inspired by the Staffordshire Hoard.

Mercia's an under-performer (average with self-confidence issues), but look closer, and she's as old as the hills, strong as an ox and a bit of a dark horse.

She's got a grin on her face, because she's decided to tell her story and show us the treasures she's been holding so close to her chest.

In The Stage Awards. Caroline Horton was voted

Best Solo Performance in 2010 and Best Ensemble in 2012.

"I'm really thrilled to be working with the New Vic; Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, and the theatre have been so supportive of my work over the last, few years - especially in the making of 'You're Not Like The Other Girls , Chrissy'," said Caroline, adding: "It's great to be making something for the building.

"Growing up in Staffordshire means my affection for the New Vic goes back even further than this, and to be making a piece about the Midlands and its many hidden treasures to is a huge honour; I can't wait!"

Directed by Yngvild Aspeli, 'Tranklements' can be enjoyed in the New Vic Studio from Tuesday, June

23rd, to Saturday, July 4th, with performances at 6pm (June 25th, 27th and July 4th) and 7.45pm (June 23rd, 24th, 26th, 30th, July 1st-3rd).

Tickets, priced at £12.50 and £10 (concessions), are available from the New Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

SUMMER MOTORING'True mpg': the ten-most-economical cars to drive in the 'real world'THE cars that are providing drivers with the most miles out of a gallon of fuel are revealed in 'What Car?' magazine's latest figures. All of the 'top ten' are diesel models, but none of them live up to the manufacturer's official miles-per-gallon (mpg) statistics. You will be surprising to learn that this is not down to dishonesty on their part, but is the result of them being forced (under EU regulations) to test vehicles in laboratory conditions, rather than taking them 'out on the road'.In an attempt to provide more realistic mpg figures, the 'What car?' 'true mpg' test puts cars into real-world conditions, starting with an urban route with an average speed of 15mph, followed by a spin on dual carriageways and motorways at an average speed of 60mph, before finishing with another loop around the urban circuit.Engines are brought up to temperature, prior to the test, and the cars are driven at a steady pace to keep efficiency as high as possible to get the most out of them.Sensors can capture data about each run, such as CO2 emissions, road-speed and exhaust-manifold-

pressure, which is all factored in, when determining the 'true mpg' of the vehicle. The most economical cars were put through their paces over the past, twelve months. All have diesel-engines, and most have a 1.6-litre engine-size (all prices given are for new vehicles). You can, of course, save a huge amount by buying second-hand, but the mileage versus price-reduction trade-off needs to be carefully considered on the facts of each, individual case.

Optimum advice at a time of personal griefIT is an indubitable truth that the healing process is something which each and every person in the country must experience at least once in his or her life.

For, bereavement is, quite simply, one of the great immutables in quotidian life.

It is, however, equally true that, when it impinges on our consciousness, the overwhelming majority of us are completely unprepared for the demands which it makes upon us.

It is, of course, essential that we are able to cope with the practical and emotional demands encountered at this potentially harrowing time.

The subject of death was a constant theme in conversation and thought in Victorian and Edwardian society, prior to World War I.

But, now, in the early-21st century, it is something that is (to put it mildly) assiduously avoided.

Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner, relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of

a reputable, well-established firm of funeral directors.

This company should possess the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, providing optimum advice at your time of personal grief.

Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereavedas is humanly

possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required.

In truth, grieving is a healing process, and, whilst our sense of loss will never disappear entirely, it will diminish, as a return to normalcy (in terms of working and social life) reasserts itself.

BIG HABERDASHERY DEPARTMENT VERY COMPETITIVE PRICES

1ST ANNIVERSARY SOON FOR PAULINE & MARTIN!THERE'S always something new to discover at Pauline and Martin's business, which is soon to celebrate its first anniversary!

Martin Art opened at Slater's Village, Baldwins Gate, Newcastle-under-Lyme, last August Bank Holiday, and, since then its commendable ethos ("To give good service, good advice, good prices") has, quite understandably, proved a hit with customers of every kind.

Here, readers will discover everything from gorgeously-fragranced candles to myriad art and craft items.

"We're committed to promoting locally-handcrafted goods," explained Pauline, adding: "We'd been thinking about launching the business for quite a while.

"Martin and I have made changes to the business, expanding it into new areas, such as wool (and always at best-possible rates), because we listen to what people say to us; so, we now offer sewing and crocheting classes, ensuring that we keep them small, thus

offering personal advice and attention (something that is important for both of us)."

A qualified aromatherapist, Pauline runs the side of the business, dealing in candles and bath- and body-products, while Martin majors in its new haberdashery (sewing and stitching) department, which is improving incredibly popular.

The couple are delighted to cater to their customers' every need; for example, if you require just one button, then they're happy to sell it to you, while Pauline cherishes comfort for all customers (especially those who are elderly or not able-bodied), thanks to the provision of chairs!

Readers can benefit from special offers (such as 'Candle of the Month') each month, and gift-baskets and boxes can be made to-order.

"We're currently thinking about how we're going to celebrate our first anniversary in August," said Martin.

Martin Art is open six days a week (10am-5pm, Tuesday-Sunday, plus every Bank Holiday), and you can follow Pauline and Martin's business on Facebook for all up-to-date offers.

Expert Car Inspections

Clive offers decades of experienceCLIVE Harris added a second 'component' to his Staffordshire-based company over four years ago - and he definitely possesses the necessary expertise to ensure complete customer-satisfaction!

For, appositely-named Expert Car Inspections benefits from Clive's 40-plus years' experience within the motor trade - starting with an indentured apprenticeship and gaining his City & Guilds qualifications, to a 28-years-long service with VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), the Government regulatory body, working on many aspects of vehicle-maintenance and compliance.

All this has given Clive an invaluable amount of expertise in facets of the motor trade - experience which, sadly, many people carrying out these types of inspections lack.

In addition, staff working for him boast similar (or very experienced) backgrounds, and their quality-of-work is regularly checked to ensure that each customer enjoys a consistent experience.

As a result, motorists are reassuringly secure in the knowledge that any vehicle inspected by ECI will be subjected to a rigorous inspection, assuring customers that a comprehensive report will be compiled to allow them to enter into a purchase or sale fully informed.

Complete car inspections are available

- all carried out by fully-trained and highly-experienced staff - from as little as £80.

However, ECI's remit also takes in vans (up to 3,500kg), motor homes and HG (Heavy Goods) and PC (Passenger Carrying) vehicles.

Complementing all the experience possessed by ECI is the business's simple pricing-structure, which means that you can be confident that an expert is carrying out the inspection at realistic, eminently-affordable rates!

While car inspections start from £80 (£130 for 4x4s, classic cars and limousines), the price for vans is £80 (up to 2,999kg) and £100 (3,000-3,500kg), with the rate motorhomes £170 (up to 3,500kg) and £210 (all other motorhomes).

Full engineer's reports on cars and vans are available for just £150, and those for motorhomes, HGVs and PCVs cost only £170.

Expert Car Inspections is an arm of the parent company, CCH Vehicle & Training Services, a consultancy which Clive launched during April, 2008, and provides an invaluable service not to the MoT garage-network and operators of heavy goods and passenger-carrying vehicles (the latter including Arriva Midlands).

At the same time, it is also contracted to a very large number of garages operating the annual MoT Scheme, ensuring that they operate within the parameters laid down in the MoT Testing Regulations and the operating guidelines dictated by VOSA.

FRIENDLY RELIABLE SERVICE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR

YOUR HOME.

Excellence is Martyn's trademarkMARTYN Stanyer strongly believes in offering customers a service so excellent that it would even satisfy himself!

"I treat my customers as if they were members of my own family, and I don't stand for the 'It'll Do' attitude that is prevalent in so many trades," he told us.

Moreover, his business, MS Services, offers such a wide-ranging remit in terms of home improvement (both internal and external) that it encompasses everything from changing a washer to building a house!

M.S. Services encompasses bathrooms, bedrooms, windows, doors and loft-conversions, with exemplary kitchen and bathroom work being Martyn's particular fort'e, as he utilises his wealth of experience and expertise.

However, 2013 saw his business enhanced by moving into the gardening sphere (including,

naturally, fencing).

Unsurprisingly, MS Services enjoys an abundance of customers' recommendations!

Of course, caring genuinely about your clients has its positive aspects.

"If you treat customers well, you have them for life; they start out as a customer and end up as a friend," commented sole proprietor, Martyn, who is very flexible in his approach to clients.

"I don't give the usual, massive quotes (which are often unfairly inflated to the tune of about 20%), with the result that most established customers never ask for a price. Also, they can buy their own materials, using my own trade-discounts."

MS Services operates over a wide radius, taking in Staffordshire (including the whole of Stoke-on-Trent) and parts of neighbouring Cheshire.

IN ADDITION, MARTYN'S WEBSITE WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE!
