Reactions 1397 - 14 Apr 2012 Levemir granted pregnancy Category B classification The US FDA has granted Levemir [insulin detemir] a pregnancy Category B classification, says Novo Nordisk in a media release dated 2 April 2012. This classification indicates that Levemir does not increase the risk of harm to the unborn baby when used during pregnancy. This label update makes Levemir the first and only basal insulin analogue to be given this classification. It follows a review of data from a large, randomised trial investigating the safety and efficacy of Levemir compared with NPH insulin [insulin suspension isophane] in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes. The study found that Levemir was associated with similar reductions in glycated haemoglobin (A1C) levels as NPH insulin at gestational week 36, and lower fasting plasma glucose levels at weeks 24 and 36. Additionally, there were no between-group differences with regard to the overall safety profile during pregnancy, other pregnancy outcomes, or the health of the fetus or newborn. Until now, NPH insulin has been considered the standard of care for diabetes in pregnancy. Novo Nordisk. FDA Approves Levemir Pregnancy Category Change for Women with Diabetes.
