BLOG POST, POSTS, and POSTING

“Hello world!” – the first post Your first post is on us. By default, the first post for your blog is “Hello world,” which is automatically generated and posted by WordPress.com. This is the only time WordPress.com will post to your blog, and you can keep, edit, or delete the post, which we will go through in this section. We just want to give your blog start a post. Let’s look at the parts of a post. Here’s what the sample post will look like:

Let’s look at the parts of a blog posting.

A Post Title You will enter this field when writing your posts.

B Posting Date and Author This will be automatically generated when you post to your blog. The date will be the actual day you submit the post to your blog, and the author will be the username you use to log in to your blog account.

C Post Text The post’s body.

D Post Category Blog posts can be organized into categories.

E Comments If you allow commenting to your posts, WordPress.com will keep a tally of readers’ comments for each post.

Write Your Own Post Writing your own posts consists of only a few steps. The hardest part might be knowing what you are going to write.

1. If you are not already logged in to your account, log in to your WordPress.com account.

Restore a Post Deleted posts are moved to a trash folder and kept there for 30 days before being permanently removed from your blog account. Allow Comments? You are the owner of your blog. You make the decisions about your blog, and as such, you can control comments to your blog posts. If you want to allow commenting, do nothing. Your WordPress.com blog defaults to allow readers to comment. However, if you would like to not have comments, you can disable commenting. Remember though, comments allow for feedback and a conversation with your readers as well as among themselves, so WordPress.com recommends leaving the comments active. After a while if you don’t like comments, then you can follow the steps below to disable them.

1. Below a post you want to prohibit comments, click on Edit (A). We’ll block comments for the blog post, Hello World, in this example.

2. The Edit Post page will open. Scroll down to the Discussion area. The Allow Comments box is checked (B). Uncheck the box by clicking on the checkmark (C).

3. In the Publish sidebar, click on the Update button (D).

Advanced Tip: If you purchase the CSS upgrade, you can edit the CSS for your home page to remove the Leave a Comment link.

What Are Widgets? On the Web, widgets are the extras added to various Web pages, most of the time in the sidebar. Some Widget examples include calendars, Twitter updates, page lists, links to other blogs and Web sites, or post updates. These widgets have already been created, and you only have to add them to your blog. Add as many or few you like. In the following steps, you’ll learn how to add and remove a widget to your blog. Let’s get started.

3. The Widgets page will open. This page is divided into two sections: Available Widgets at the top of the page and Inactive Widgets at the bottom of the page. For more information about Inactive widgets, please see the Glossary. For this guide, we’ll focus on the Available Widgets section.

4. On the right-hand side of the widgets sections is the Sidebar box.

5. To add or remove widgets for your blog, you drag and drop the widgets between the sections and the sidebar. For this example, let’s add the Calendar and the Twitter widgets to the blog. Drag these two widgets from the Available Widgets section and drop them into the sidebar. The widgets should now appear in the sidebar.

6. We decided we don’t want our Twitter feeds showing on this blog. Let’s remove the Twitter widget by dragging it from the Sidebar back to the Available Widgets section. Now the Sidebar should show only the Calendar widget.

7. The Calendar widget is now added to the blog. See this widget on the blog’s home page.

28 More Content than Posts

MORE CONTENT THAN POSTS

What Are Pages? Pages can help extend and enhance your blog. As mentioned earlier, blog posts are added only to your home page, but pages can include as much or as little information (text, pictures, and files). Pages can add depth to the focus of your blog and offer mainly static information for your readers, for example, an About page can describe you or your blog, which might be information that won’t change very often. Pages can be edited and updated, so the information on them is not set in concrete. Read on to add pages to your blog and order them.

Add Pages In these steps we will add a page to the sample blog.

1. From the My Dashboard page, in the sidebar, click on Pages.

2. The Pages area will open. This section will list all of the pages of your blog. By default, WordPress.com provides an About page, in which you can tell readers about yourself or the focus of your blog. Let’s leave this page as is and add a new one.

A

Page 31: LET’S GET BLOGGIN’! · WordPress.com is an online blogging service that offers its users several features to start, develop, and maintain a blog. WordPress.com’s features span

3. At the top of this area near the title, click on the Add New (B) button.

4. The Add New Page section will open. From this page, you can add a title (C) and text (D) for this page of your blog. Adding information for a page is set up similar to the Add a Post page.

5. In the Title box (C), type in a title for the page: “My First Page.”

6. Add some information about the page in the Text area (D).

7. Your page is now ready to be added to your blog. In the Publish sidebar, click

the Publish button (E).

8. Your new page will now be accessible from your blog’s home page. Depending on the theme of your blog, you may see the Page list in the sidebar of the home page, as shown below (F).

With the MistyLook blog theme, pages are also listed as tabs at the top of the blog (G).

Ordering Pages By default, WordPress.com organizes pages by the order in which the pages are added to your blog. As you add more pages, you can organize the page list by assigning an Order Number to the page. For the sample blog, let’s put My First Page before the About page.

1. From the My Dashboard page, in the sidebar, click on Pages (A).

2. The Pages area will open. This section will list all of the pages of your blog. In this example, there are two pages listed: About and My First Page.

3. Hover your mouse over one of the pages titles and click on Edit (B).

A

B

4. The Edit Page section will open. This is similar in layout and function as editing a post. On the right-hand side, in the Attributes sidebar, type a 1 in the Order box (C). This will make My First Page the first page listed on your blog after the blog’s home page.

5. In the Publish sidebar, click on the Update button (D).

6. Now let’s order the About page as 2. Repeat steps 1–5 above for the About page but put in a 2 for the Order Number.

C

D

7. Now the page list will display My First Page first and then the About page. In the MistyLook theme, notice that My First Page is now the first tab and the first one listed in the sidebar.

Add some more pages to your blog and expand your blog’s content, look, and feel.

Uploading a Picture to a Post Besides your blog posts or the information you add on pages, you can add files and pictures to your blog posts or the page text. In the following steps, we will add a picture to a blog post. Currently, the free WordPress.com blog supports the following file type extensions: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, pdf, doc, ppt, odt, pptx, and docx. With paid upgrades, you can upload more file types, including audio and video files. Let’s add a picture to one of the sample blog’s posts.

In the above picture, the alternate text could be “beach photo.”

My Dashboard The My Dashboard page can be considered the main area for accomplishing many of the tasks for your blog. This manual often references two main areas of the My Dashboard page to begin or accomplish a task: the top menu bar (A) and the sidebar (B). The links on the top menu bar will take you directly to an area where you can complete a task. For example, this menu bar has a link for a New Post in which you can quickly add a new post to your blog. The sidebar contains dropdown options under its links, so you may access the main link or an option under the main link. As you become more familiar and advanced in working with your blog on WordPress.com, you may begin to explore more areas of the My Dashboard page.
