The “Other”
“The other is under our roof or on the other side of the globe.”
– Carl Wilkens
• When we can successfully distance ourselves from the other human beings, see the differences rather than the commonalities, that is when the light goes out on “shared humanness”.
• Dehumanizing individuals, communities or entire populations creates an environment that fosters and even celebrates cruelty and violence.

"The worst sin towards
our fellow creatures is
not to hate them, but to
be indifferent to them:
That's the essence of
inhumanity."--George Bernard Shaw

Our Mission
PIH delivers high-quality health care in some of the world’s
poorest communities.
By pushing the boundaries of what’s
possible in health care, PIH has a global
impact.PIH Community Health worker Lucrecia M. Sherman visits the home of HIV patient Lucy Farr in Harper, Liberia on Sept. 24, 2015. PIH Mission
• Our mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care.
• By establishing long-term relationships with sister organizations based in settings of poverty, Partners In Health strives to achieve two overarching goals: – to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them
– to serve as an antidote to despair.
• We draw on the resources of the world’s leading medical and academic institutions and on the lived experience of the world’s poorest and sickest communities.
• At its root, our mission is both medical and moral. It is based on solidarity, rather than charity alone.
• When our patients are ill and have no access to care, our team of health professionals, scholars, and activists will do whatever it takes to make them well—just as we would do if a member of our own families or we ourselves were ill. 13

PIH Values
• Commitment
– We are tenacious and resolute in our drive to attain social
justice.
• Pragmatic Solidarity/Accompaniment
– We make common cause with those in need.
• Humility
– We listen to and learn from others.
• Integrity
– We operate with honesty and fairness.14
