Invention vs Innovation Invention : “The discovery of new processes
and potential new products, typically after a period of research”
Innovation: “The process of transforming inventions in to products that can be sold to customers”

Protecting ideas - Patent
Protects inventions of new products or processes.
Able to take anyone to court that copies the idea.
Register with the ‘Intellectual Property Office’ Last 20 years from when granted
Could it be illegal to copy a dance?
Protecting ideas - Copyright
This is used for films, books and music Gives the right to produce, control and copy
the work to the person or company that produced it.
Anyone copying it without permission can be sued.
Lasts longer than patents. An author’s work is protected for their lifetime, plus another 70 years from their death
Name the Brand
Protecting Ideas - Trademark
A name of a product or business that cannot be copied e.g. Coca Cola
Also applies to symbols/logos/colours
Match the method of protection with the person/item
Patent Copyright Trademark
Tread carefully!
Not just about protecting the intellectual property of your business
Entrepreneurs need to take care that they don’t infringe the patents, copyright or trademarks of others
Complete one of these sentences using the words ‘because’ and ‘therefore’
“It is important for companies to protect their ideas…….”
