lesson 5 | there is an enemy

LESSON 5 | THERE IS AN ENEMY Heart Prep for Leaders: When working with children, it can be tempting to focus on the blessings of following Jesus while avoiding sharing the challenges. Children need to know that God doesn’t promise troublefree lives. They need to be aware of the existence of two unseen spiritual kingdoms...the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light. They need to know that just as God has a good plan for their lives, an enemy exists who also has a plan. The Word describes him as a liar, thief, stealer, destroyer, one prowling around like a lion. In the adult Rooted book, he is described as the “ultimate deceiver. He is the “god of the world,” hiding in the ways we see the world through assumptions, values and political and religious systems.” The Biblical worldview is characterized by warfare between God’s Kingdom and Satan’s. Children need to understand the battle is real and there is no middle ground. If they are not part of God’s Kingdom through their decision to love and follow Jesus, the default is living in the kingdom of darkness. These are the only choices available. There is no inbetween. These words press against tolerance mindsets and lead to questioning God’s love. “How could a loving God be so dogmatic?” While not culturally popular, grappling to understand God’s love within the framework of His justice becomes a critical building block in framing our desperate need for Jesus. Without experiencing this need, one’s understanding of following Jesus can easily devolve into sin management, leading to discouragement and potentially giving up on following Jesus. Framing our understanding of following Jesus in light of the battle is helpful. “The good news is that God “was, is and will be the winner of this battle. The New Testament is very clear that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus signaled a decisive victory by God over the kingdom of darkness.” Adult Rooted book, pg. 82. When you were dead in your sins, God made you alive with Christ..And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Colossians 2:1315 . Children need to understand that God has provided them with all they need to withstand the attacks of the enemy. While time does not allow introducing God’s armor during this lesson, it is important to reinforce the truth that God has already won the victory and provides His followers with the strength and resources they need to withstand the attacks of the enemy. It is also important for the children to understand the battle rages within them. Even once securely in God’s Kingdom, we still battle selfishness and sin. From the adult Rooted book: “When we give our hearts to Christ our sin nature doesn’t go away. As a result, these two natures live together until we go to heaven. But unfortunately, they don’t make very good roommates. The damaged self still wants to gratify its desires, while the spirit wants to draw close to God. God’s Spirit is in us, drawing us toward righteousness and honoring God. But our sin nature drags us back into struggling with lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride. The more we entertain the things of this world, like greed, lust and impurity, the more we want it. We become more and more numb to the effects of sin our our lives. But it’s more than saying “no” to our sin nature. We must say “yes” to God’s Spirit dwelling in us.” It is vital for kids (and all of us!) to grapple with the reality that we have a choice when it comes to defeating sin. We provide an opportunity during the journaling time for children to talk with a leader about choosing Jesus as Lord and Savior. Please confirm the desired protocol for these discussions with your church leadership and become familiar with any support materials available for you and/or parents to facilitate this discussion.

LESSON 5 |  THERE IS AN ENEMY

Heart Prep for Leaders:   When working with children, it can be tempting to focus on the blessings of following Jesus while avoiding sharing the challenges. He is the “god of the world,” hiding in the ways we see the world through assumptions, values and political and religious systems.”

The Biblical worldview is characterized by warfare between God’s Kingdom and Satan’s.

Goals: The children will:

● Learn there are two spiritual kingdoms:  darkness and light

● Grapple with the truth that we all have a sin naturethat selfish desire in each of us to do thingsour way and to put our interests first. Sin is saying “no” to God and “yes” to self.

● Play a game to experience the truth that that they are unable to get rid of their sin throughselfeffort.

● Learn that sin traps us in the Kingdom of darkness.

● Experience an object lesson, learning that we can be saved from sin and the kingdom ofdarkness, living with God now and forever in His Kingdom. They will be provided an opportunityto discuss this choice with a leader.

● Grapple with the truth that when we choose to follow Jesus, our sin nature doesn’t disappear, butGod gives us a new heart, transformed by His Spirit, empowering us to live in victory over sin. Weare immediately placed in right standing with God (justification), and have the opportunity toexperience ongoing transformation, becoming more and more like Jesus (sanctification), byresponding to the Holy Spirit’s work in us.

■ Rooted Welcome■ Rooted Verse (Slide)■ John 14:6 verse (Slide)■ Kingdom of Light and Darkness together (Slide)■ Qualities of God■ Qualities of Satan

Engage: ● Welcome● Review: We’re growing our faith roots deep in Jesus!  We’re learning what it means

to know, love and serve Jesus as HIs followers.  So far, we’ve explored who God is and how God speaks to us through His Word and prayer. It’s amazing that the Creator of the Universe is always available and WANTS to spend time with you and me!  Last week we grappled with the question, “Where is God when bad things happen?” What do you remember about our time together?

● Show Rooted verse slide and read together:

● Our Rooted verse reminds us what happens when we choose to be Rooted kids, loving, following, obeying and trusting Jesus. (Have students look up verse in their Bibles)  “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”  Colossians 2:67

○ Ask:

■ Did anyone do something to allow their “roots” to grow deep in Jesus thisweek?   (invite response)

■ Let’s look closely at: “faith growing strong in the the truth you were taught”What is one way your faith has grown stronger through Rooted Kids?(invite responses)

■ There is a very important word in this section. ( Highlight the word “truth”)  Iwonder…what is truth?  (Invite responses)  This is a REALLY big question thatvery, very smart people throughout time have struggled to answer. Forthose who have chosen to love and trust Jesus, while not always easy, the

Page 4: LESSON 5 | THERE IS AN ENEMY

simple answer can be found in the words of Jesus,

Show John 14:6 Slide

“I am the way, the truth and the life.”  John 14:6.  What does this verse tell us about truth?  (Jesus is truth)  And, He’s given us His truth in His Word, the Bible.  That’s an important idea for us to hold on to for this week’s Rooted discovery.  We can discover truth in God’s Word and that truth is a powerful tool in our faith journey.

○ Recite verse together from the beginning. Invite children to recite without leader help.

Introduce Kingdom of Darkness/Kingdom of LIght

Before we reveal our question for tonight, I want to show you something. Hold up flashlight. Say: Tell me about an occasion when you had to use a flashlight. Is there such a thing as a “flashdark”? Darkness is simply the absence of light.  (turn off lights and turn on flashlight.)  Any time light shines into the darkness, darkness is moved aside. But darkness cannot move light aside. Darkness is here only if light leaves.  (Turn lights back on.)

God’s Word tells us that there are two spiritual kingdomsthe kingdom of darkness and God’s kingdom or the kingdom of light.  These kingdoms are real, but we can’t see them with our eyes. That’s what it means when we say they are spiritual kingdoms.  They exist in the spiritual world and they are very powerful, impacting what happens in the world we see and experience every day. Just like an earthly kingdom is ruled by a king, these spiritual kingdoms have rulers. God is the ruler of the Kingdom of light. Who do you think rules the Kingdom of darkness?  (responses)  Yes, God’s enemy Satan rules the kingdom of darkness.

Show kingdom of light/Kingdom of darkness graphic :

Why do you think God’s kingdom is called the kingdom of light?

The Bible tells us that God loves us and desires for us to live with Him in His Kingdom and that Satan, because he hates God, wants to keep us trapped in his kingdom of darkness.

Here’s what God’s Word says about Satan, the ruler of the Kingdom of darkness:

● He hates the truth.● He is a liar and the Father of lies● He prowls around like a lion looking for people to devour● He is a thief who came to steal, kill and destroy● He disguises himself as an angel of light

And, here’s what God’s Word says about God, the King of the Kingdom of light.

● He is love. 1 John 4:8

Page 5: LESSON 5 | THERE IS AN ENEMY

● He  is a God of compassion and mercy  Exodus 34:57● He is slow to anger. Exodus 34:57● He is filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Exodus 34:57● He forgives our rebellion and sin.● He keeps His promises. 2 Chronicles 6:14● He hears us when we call out to Him. Deuteronomy 4:7● He is a good shepherd who guides, leads and protects us. Psalm 23

Here’s an important truth for you to grapple with: These two kingdoms are the only choices available to us. People are in one or the other. There is no inbetween.  And, we are automatically a part of the kingdom of darkness, trapped by Satan’s lies. But we can make a choice to live in the kingdom of light. So how does one make this choice? We’ll get to that a bit later, but first, let’s discover what keeps us trapped in the kingdom of darkness.

Sin

Supplies: ● Sin hand motions

Engage:

Let's talk about sin. . . Ask students, "What is sin? Can any of you give me an example of sin?" (Pause for a response)

"Those were great answers! Some examples of sin are telling lies, stealing, murder, and, using God's name in vain. You see sin is not just the really bad things, such as murder. Sin is also when you disobey your parents or treat someone badly. Sin is anything you think, say, do, or don't do, that doesn't please God."

"Today I am going to teach you guys the sin hand motions, stand up and follow along. We will practice the hand motions a couple times so that you can get them memorized."

"Are you ready?"

Teach the sin hand motions

Script:

"Sin. We are all sinners, and we cannot save ourselves. What is sin? Sin is anything we think, say, do, or don't do, that does not please God. For all have sinned an fall short of the glory of God. There must be a different way? Gods way!"

Transition To God Is Greater Than Sin Activity

Page 6: LESSON 5 | THERE IS AN ENEMY

God is Greater Than SIn Supplies:

● Three clear plastic glasses, labeled:  You, Sin and Jesus● Iodine● Bleach● Water● Eye dropper

Prep:  Fill the three labeled cups with water. Add 12 tsp of bleach solution to the water in the “Jesus” cup. Put some drops of Iodine in the Sin cup to darken the water up.

Engage:

● I wonder, how God rescued us? How did He make it possible for us to move fromthe Kingdom of darkness into His Kingdom?

● Show clear glass with water (YOU).  Let’s imagine this cup represents you. Here’swhat’s true: You were created as one of God’s precious children. He loves youand created you to be part of His Kingdom. But, our enemy Satan has anotherplan. Our choices and Satan’s lies keep us trapped in His Kingdom of darkness. He wants to destroy God’s work in us.  What are some sins kids your age mightchoose to do?   As kids offer ideas, use eyedropper to drop some iodine into the clearwater, turning the water dark.  What are some lies about God kids your age mightbelieve?  Continue to add iodine to the water. (You can have students come up andhelp with eye dropper)

● Here’s even worse news:  Just like the water has become dark and cloudy,something happens in the spiritual world when we choose to sin and believeSatan’s lies. The Bible tells us that there is a consequence for sin. It says, “Thewages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23a). A wage is something that is paid, so thismeans that something must be paid for sin and the Bible tells us that payment isdeath. This doesn’t just mean that our bodies will someday die, but it is talkingabout a spiritual death, which means our spirits, the part of us that can know andlove God, will be separated from God now and when our bodies do die, forever.

Page 7: LESSON 5 | THERE IS AN ENEMY

● I don’t know about you, but that makes me want to get rid of my sin, so I can live as God’s child now and forever! Lots of people desire this, so they try to get rid of their sin by doing good things, trying really hard to not make mistakes or keep sinning. We all discover it is impossible to try hard enough or be good enough to get rid of all our sins. We can’t fix our relationship with God in our own efforts. It looks like we have a very big problem doesn’t it! (if appropriate, invite group to reflectwhy is this such a big problem for us?)  But there is an amazing solution. God provided a solution, a gift to solve to this terrible dilemma.

● When Jesus died on the cross, he willingly took the punishment for our sins. He paid for your and my sin with his blood. And, when he came alive again, he proved he was more powerful than sin and death and all of Satan’s lies. That is really good news!  That means you can be set free from sin and live as His child, as He created you to live, in His truth, starting right now.

● So what do you do? We say it is simple, but not easy.  You can think of it as A, B, C.

○ A stands for ADMIT:  The first choice is to be honest with God about your sin, admitting you cannot fix sin on your own and asking him to forgive you.

○ B stands for BELIEVE: This doesn’t just mean you believe Jesus is God’s Son. Satan believes that!  It is believing that there is one and only one way to be set free from sin and Satan’s lies and that is through Jesus.

○ C stands for CHOOSE: You choose to trust Jesus as the king of your life. You are no longer in charge.

○ When you make these decisions, something incredible happens in the spiritual kingdom!  You become a child of God!  The Bible says God makes you a new creation  (2 Corinthians 5:17)  and sets you free to become all he created you to be.   You move from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.  (Eph. 2:10) (Pour some of the solution from the Christ cup into the You cup. It will instantly become clear.)   (Pause to allow the kids to respond with amazement and excitement, which they will!)  Wow!  This is the very best gift you could ever receive! Please know this doesn’t mean that your life will now be perfect and free from any troubles. But it does mean that as you trust Jesus, He will be with you, giving you strength and power to live as His child, doing the Kingdom work he’s created you to do.

● If you have never made the decision to live as God’s child and would like to talk with a leader more about this, feel free to do so at your tables.

● And, if you have already made this decision, know that as a follower of Jesus, our enemy still desires to destroy God’s work in you. The good news is that God promises he is stronger than our enemy, giving us His Holy Spirit’s power to live for Him.

● That’s a lot to think about. We are going to head to small group and you can talk more about this with your leaders.

Transition To Small Group
