LED light fixtures are solid-state devices. That means they have no moving parts, no fragile glass, no mercury or toxic gas and nofragile filaments. There’s nothing to break, rupture, shatter, leak or contaminate. LEDs are not subject to sudden failure or burnout –instead they indiscernibly dim over time but still deliver an average of 80% of initial light intensity after 60,000 hours of continuousoperation.
Being guaranteed to deliver a continuous performance lifetime of five years and able to last ten years or more, they achieve a 3xto 5x reduction in replacement cycles, vastly reducing both inventory and maintenance needs and offering attractive paybackperiods. Compared to traditional lighting technologies, Dialight’s LED lighting solutions offer customers up to 90% reduction in elec-tricity costs as well as reduced carbon emissions. LED high bays were specified for a new offshore productionplatform by its operator. Their 5-year warranty means vastlyreduced inspection and maintenance costs for lighting inhazardous and inaccessible areas
Regulations dictate that periodic inspections of offshoreequipment need to be carried out at least once every 3 yearsin order to minimise the risk of explosion. Inspecting or changinglight sources and control gear on an offshore facility takes2-3 man teams and up to three hours per unit at a typicalcost of £240.
The typical lifetime of a metal halide fitting is 1.4 years, whilefor LED fittings it is 6.8 years. This means that with LEDs the off-shore operator can reduce the number of inspections over athree-year period from three to one. This is a significant savingin maintenance burden and cost when an offshore asset cancarry several thousand light fittings.

Valero’s first priority was safety and improved lighting. Theefficient optics used in LED fittings result in more light reachingthe target area compared to the previous HPS installation atthe plant. Using lower wattage than conventional lighting,fewer LED fittings are needed to address the same job, sofewer are needed to light a given area. More light is focusedon straight lines where it is needed and spillage is limited tojust a few feet.
The combination of reduced energy consumption, a 50% cutin the number of lighting fixtures, a fixture life warranty of fiveyears with over 60,000 operating hours and the resultingreduction in maintenance clearly produces a low cost ofownership for Valero.
LEDs’ instant on/off capability also improves safety and productionefficiencies by avoiding hot re-strike blackouts.
