Device Efficiency / Efficacy• Efficiency is the ratio of total lumens exiting the fixture to the total lumens 

initially produced by the light source

• Efficacy is how well a light source produces visible light

• lumens per watt (LPW or lm/w)

• HID/fluorescent efficacy should be calculated based on luminaire lumen (Efficiency)

• LED has minor loss, considered 100% efficient

LED: LED directs the light to where it’s needed without the use of external optics. 

BULB: HID lamps emit light in every direction; this light is controlled using a reflector or refractor. The result is poor utilization efficiencies.
