Room to ConnectRadical Connections is not about a building. However, as the church fleshed out this vision it became apparent that new spaces were needed to facilitate the vision. •We need space where people can gather in small or medium sized groups to become better acquainted and better equipped for ministry.•We need space for people of different cultures and generations to mingle and learn from one another.•We need space where people can connect one-on-one to build lasting relationships.•We need space to grow larger because partnerships like the ones we are forging in India and Lebanon, and those we have yet to even imagine, require personal and financial resources that can be found only in large congregations.

Visionaries not FoolsSome might say our vision is foolish, planning for growth while at the same time desiring deeper community. But if we are to continue being an effective vessel of God’s grace, we must grow both deep and wide. Our connections with one another and with our Lord must grow deep, for that is where we will draw strength. As we grow both larger and stronger, we will be able to minister God’s grace to others, whether they live across the street or around the world, in ways we can only dream of today.

Others might say we are foolish spending such large amounts of money (and asking for more!) when the church can’t even meet its regular budget. When the church began this project the economy was booming. We didn’t know what was around the corner, but God most certainly did.

Even though our economy has taken a turn for the worse, this is hardly the time to pull back from what we know God has called us to do. Like Joshua and Caleb we must be willing to step out in faith, trusting God to slay the giants that loom so large in our own eyes.

The Mark of God’s HandNo one knows what will happen in Washington County or around the world because the people of Village embraced a vision and sacrificed to make it a reality. One thing, however, is certain already. The hand of God is on this project.

Years of searching for property on which to build revealed that the closest available land that would meet our need is miles away in Forest Grove. In 2004 the church was stunned to learn that we could actually build on our current site. For years we thought that flood plain restrictions prevented further expansion. About that same time houses bordering church property suddenly went up for sale. Village eventually purchased four homes, remodeling them for use as office space.

Our project remains ontime and under budget –

something virtually unheardof in construction.

Every time the church approached the county for necessary permits and approvals the county’s response was timely and positive. When we began pursuing an initial building plan in 2006 contractors didn’t have time to commit to our project. As building costs spiraled out of sight, Villagers wisely voted to change course and pursue a more cost effective building. Now that times are tougher, our building costs are remaining stable and we have a contractor and laborers eager to work with us.

The facility we are currently building provides much more flexible space at less than half the cost of the building we originally planned. While no one set out to waste time and money on the first building plan, even that detour was in God’s hands.

The Mark of God’s People

In Village’s 60 years of ministry, God has faithfully led His church and He has always provided the resources to do His will. In the spring of 2006, Villagers pledged an incredible $9.8 million toward the vision campaign -- more than two and a half times what the experts thought we would raise!

To date, more than $7.2 million has been received and put to work purchasing and improving the houses being used as office space; purchasing the cemetery property, obtaining county approvals and permits and finally, constructing the new building. Believing that God is continuing to bless this project, the congregation voted in June 2008, to take out an $8 million line of credit so that construction could proceed without delays.

Individuals and families have been giving sacrificially over the past three years to meet their pledges, confirming the truth that God calls us not to equal giving, but to equal sacrifice. Some have put off the purchase of a new car or postponed dream vacations. Others have found ways to earn extra income or cut back on everyday expenses. Some have even prayerfully agreed to extend their giving for another year, thereby increasing their initial pledge.

Leave Your Mark

Some were not part of our church family when those pledges were collected three years ago. Others, for whatever reason, have not made a pledge yet. This is your opportunity to leave your mark for future generations.

Each time we step out in faith, God responds by doing immeasurably more than all we could ask or imagine. The amounts we give will vary, but each of us, like the New Testament widow who gave sacrificially even out of her poverty,

are called to prayerfully consider a sacrifice that compels us to depend on God and then stand amazed at what He accomplishes.

The mark of God’s hand and His people are already on this project. How will you leave your mark?
