The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been studying Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) for over 3 decades. SAD is the result

of fewer daylight hours during daylight savings. SAD is more common among

people in northern regions like ours and can last up to 5 months. Here are some tips for

preventing and coping with SAD and beating the “winter blues”:

• Talk with your doctor• Excercise, outdoors when possible• Eat fresh fruits, veggies, and lean

proteins• Try light therapy with a light box

Due to the nature of her job as an art teacher, Renée Finlay had always considered herself to be a “Jack of all trades and a master of none.” When retirement was approaching and despite having a strong ceramics background, Renée focused her attention on attaining mastery in drawing and painting.

Since having first encountered pastels while taking art lessons as a child, Renée has chosen to now pursue the study of pastel painting as a senior citizen.

Although predominately a plein air painter, Renée enjoys still life and portrait studies; however, she is currently experimenting with abstract themes and images. This exhibition is a display of various subject matter, but every work is a pastel painting.Renée Finlay is a retired Bellingham, Massachusetts High School Fine Arts Department Head and has also taught at the college and graduate levels. Renée is a Smithfield, RI resident and serves on a number of committees in town. She holds memberships in several art associations, including the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, Wickford Art Association, Cape Cod Art Center, and Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod.
