MARCH: JUNIOR VETEnter our animal-hospital classroom to practice the jobs of a veterinarian and create your own kit. At the cardiology station, check the heartbeat of a pretend kangaroo. At the lab station, view samples under a microscope. Then we’ll go to the Animal Health Center to peek into a real exam room and learn how animals are cared for at the Zoo. Elephants, bears, giraffes or rhinos ... which mammal is your favorite to sculpt? After learning what makes an animal a mammal, venture into the Zoo for sculpture inspiration. Can you turn feathers into fur or pipe cleaners into tails? Learn creative ways to sculpt with a huge assortment of random art materials. ZOO ART CLUB: AGES 8-12Cost per series (of 3 sessions): $90 Zoo Pass members; $100 non-membersNOTE: Due to the wide age range of Art Club, more advanced art techniques are taught, so 8-year-olds will be more comfortable if they’ve had previous art experience.

Get the scoop on famous artists and animals when you join Art Club! This class series includes cool facts about artists, a chance to create your own animal-themed artwork and a “gallery day” when you can showcase your work to family and friends!

FEBRUARY & MARCH*What does a train coming out of a fireplace and a melting clock have in common? They are both subjects of surrealist art. What is surrealist art? It’s making an object look strange or mysterious. Learn about Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali and create animal art in this fun and unusual style. Using the Zoo’s animals as subjects, we’ll learn about surrealism, venture into the Zoo for some animal research and then create acrylic surrealist paintings in the style of Magritte or Dali to show at Gallery Day in April.

APRILInvite your family and friends to attend Gallery Day, a family-style class where guests get to see your final masterpiece. You and your guests can create paintings in the Family Art Studio and learn about famous surrealist artists while enjoying light refreshments.

APRIL: RESEARCH STATION BELIZE“Trek” to a research station in Central America to learn how the Zoological Society partnered with The Belize Zoo. Observe how scientists band and track more than 100 songbird species that call Wisconsin and Belize home. View surveillance photos of jaguars in the wild and discover how these cats were radio-collared and tracked by researchers in Belize. Interview a zookeeper to learn how our jaguars and tapirs are helping their Belizean relatives in the wild. Tour goes outside rain or shine.9:30 a.m.–3 p.m.: April 25 (bring a lunch)

ZOO PHOTO WALKING TOUR: SMALL MAMMALSCost per class: $35 Zoo Pass members; $45 non-members (parking not included)

Perfect for photography enthusiasts – from beginners to professionals and everyone in between. Learn tips and tricks-of-the-trade from a professional photographer and take advantage of the chance to talk to a keeper and photograph the fruit bat behind the scenes. After a short instruction in the classroom we will take a walking tour around the Zoo. This is a great opportunity to get photo instruction and assistance in a hands-on environment.

SNACK & FOOD ALLERGIESWe serve a snack in all of our classes. Snacks for each class topic can be found online if you click on the “Class Info” link when you register. When registering, please update the ‘participant information’ form with any food-related allergies or call our staff with updates at 414-258-5058.

ANTICIPATE ENTRANCE GATE LINESThe time required to enter the Zoo can vary depending on weather, road construction and events such as large corporate picnics. Because event dates vary each year, please check our website for events (zoosociety.org/Events) or call the Education Department in advance of your registered education program. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDSIf you cancel: If you’re unable to attend class, call at least 3 days before the class date and we will try to reschedule your child for another available date within February-May 2020. We do not issue refunds; however, you can offer your child’s class to a friend of the same age.

If we cancel: The Education Department reserves the right to cancel classes. We will attempt to reschedule a canceled class. If we are unable to do so, or if we cannot accommodate your child in another class, you will receive a refund. For weather-related cancellations, refer to local news stations or call 414-258-5058.
