Recently I had the pleasure of working at a festival withSteve Hewlett. You may remember Steve as the

ventriloquist from Britain's Got Talent, with the infamousSimon Cowell and Sinitta puppets. Steve is coming to do ashow at The Caroline of Brunswick in Brighton on the 4th ofAugust, which should not be missed!

How old were you when you started ventriloquism?I started learning aged 12, after watching a TV ventriloquistwin New Faces in 1987: Jimmy Tamley. He's also one of thenicest and funniest men I'veever met, oh and my best mate!

I first performed at my schoolassembly for 150 pupils, it wasscary as I was a shy kid, soteachers and classmates wereshocked that I took to thestage. It went quite well. Thesecond show I performed atwas in Basingstoke, at a charityevent hosted by Alan Titchmarsh. 25 years later I remindedhim of this story as he introduced me on his ITV daytime showThe Alan Titchmarsh Show, in 2014.

How did Simon Cowell and Sinitta react to seeing puppets ofthemselves on BGT? Simon apparently doesn't like ventriloquists, but the way Irearranged my act for the show won him over both times inthe live shows. Sinitta was speechless but when it was all overI was invited to her home on quite a few occasions to filmsome wacky YouTube ideas. She is lovely and her partner Jasonmakes a mean Homemade Pizza! You can get tickets for Steve Hewlett’s Brighton Show on www.wegottickets.comFor more details see: www.thestevehewlettshow.com

DOGGY TALES

Each week Latest 7 willregale you with tales

about the dogs who live inBrighton (via their owners)and also introduce you torescue dogs, looking forforever homes. This weekSarah Morgan, introduces hergorgeous dog Ramsey.

“I got Ramsey at 18 monthsold from Allsorts Rescue, inDecember 2014. He is aclever Collie crossed with asociable German Spitz. Wehaven't looked back – he ismedium build, enthusiasticbut gentle and arrived withimmaculate house training.

Ramsey’s best feature is apompom tail, which arcs in ahuge fluffy plume. It wasalmost bald when he firstcame from the shelter inSouthern Ireland, but his coatis now fully plush after abetter diet, gentle combingand organic coconut oiltreatments.

“Alertness and gregariousfriendliness set Ramsey apart. He is popular onBorrowMyDoggy and enjoyscalling on local shopkeepersfor treats and a big fuss.Ramsey has introduced me toall my neighbours when they

stop by to pet him. “We meet different types of

people through voluntaryprojects (like withdog.co.uk)and update on doggy issues inthe community

@SaveTheFence. Socialisationis key for younger rescue dogsand we especially love tomeet other breeds and'withdog' members at theWithdean 'puppy park'.”

Local graffiti artist, Aroe, is responsible for many of thefamed works of art adorning the walls on the streets of

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

Don’t even think about the weather – the summer holidaysare fast approaching and it’s got nothing to do with the

sunshine. School is almost out, and whether you’re an AliceCooper dude or Daphne & Celeste poppettes, it’s time to startmaking plans.

Alright, so not everyone is a student, teacher or parent, butthat doesn’t mean the end of term doesn’t affect the rest of ustoo. Package holiday prices skyrocket, offices start playing thattessellation game of fitting everyone’s time off around whatcan still keep business ticking over, and every cinema screeningbefore ‘bedtime’ is packed with jubilant kids happy to seeblockbusters instead of maths homework.

Speaking as an auntie, this is the time when I am most likelyto get visits and offschedule outings thrown my way – which Ihasten to add that I love. Meeting the family off the train at thestation, the oldest makes a beeline for the carousel and theyoungest for the penny arcades, it’s like I’ve flashed back intoone of British Rail’s retro posters. It’s a treat to be a snapshot ofthis family life. It certainly makes my sun shine.

Dating doesn’t come naturally to me. I don’t like followingdating etiquette or playing mind games with people. I

usually confuse people with how blunt and open I can be on afirst date. I guess I’ve been doing it wrong.

In my head guys don’t have to pull the chair out for me andpay the bill, chivalry was never alive in my eyes. A sense ofhumour and a caring attitude regardless of societal norms goesa long way.

For years I neverbothered with meals outand instead met up for acoffee, a pint or maybe atrip to the cinema at a push.I just wanted to hang outwithout the hang ups offinding what to wear orhow to act. This wholedating scene has nevermade sense to me.

The first time I got asked“out” I actually laughedsince I didn’t believe what Iwas hearing. I was only ten and the poor boy had asked hisfemale friend to ask me, so he didn’t really have much of achance.

More than 15 years ago I was clueless and confused. At thetime I seriously thought that his friend was teasing me forhaving a crush. Looking back it was probably a good thingsince I’m still just as clueless.

Then again the clues I have managed to find I don’t agreewith. I would much rather talk to those I’m attracted to likehuman beings and let them get to know me.

I don’t wait two days to text people back, if I havesomething to tell them I do so. If I want to meet someone Idon’t ask until they ask, I ask them. But this doesn’t mean thatI don’t believe in romance!

How time changes things. There was a time when I likednothing more than a day out and a little retail therapy.

Shopping back then was fun and I would often return homeweighed down with bags and parcels. A bit like Doris Day onMadison Avenue.

Not any more, the last time I decided to shop for clothes theonly thing I came home weighed down with was a heavy heart,a heavy heart created by aheavy body. Yes, you got it,I could not find clothes thatI liked that would fit. Ofcourse there were clothesthat would fit, but not onesthat I would want to wear.

I know that my body sizeis my responsibility, ofcourse it is, but as I getolder I see that I am notalone as an older man withan expanding waistline. Shame really as the clothes that I cannow afford only come in sizes that will fit the young andslender.

Funnily enough there is a definite upside to this, and that isthat whilst my waist gets thicker so too does my bank balance. My size has restricted my spending. Conversely, were I torestrict my diet, my finances might also become slimmer. Whata dilemma!

Well there is no dilemma really, given that my work involveseating I am resigned to the bigger belly and buoyant bankbalance. But more importantly, am I happy?

Right now yes, most definitely. I have a good life, goodfriends and plenty to keep me occupied. Do I fret about theclothes thing? Not really, I find that with a little thought I candress in a way that I like. Bright, bold and slightly mad as alook, one I generally adhere to, seems to defy the sizeist andyouth obsessed fashion and retail industries.

Hypnosis is not a dangerous procedure. It’s notbrainwashing or mind control. A therapist can’t make you

do something embarrassing or something you don’t want todo. A hypnotic state allows you to be more open to discussionand suggestion. It can also improve the effectiveness of othertreatments for a variety of conditions, including phobias, fears, stress, grief and loss. Established by John Kiehl, 160 years ago, in New York's EastVillage, Kiehl’s started off life as an apothecary. The

company have since gone from strength to strength, evolvinginto the expert global skincare provider that they are today. Ihave always been intrigued by the quirky medical interior andwhitecoatclad assistants, so decided to pop in and try outthe free skin analysis on offer.

Adam Inglis, store manager, has been gracefully at the helmsince the South Laine shop opened seven years ago. Hecertainly knows his stuff and promptly regaled me with theimpressive tale of Kiehl’s history. As it turns out, Andy Warholwas a huge fan of Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion, so Iwas in very salubrious company.

I generally aim to drink eight glasses of water a day, with theoccasional glass of Prosecco thrown in for good measure andhave moisturised religiously throughout my adult years. However, the general stresses of modern life means that skinstill sometimes doesn't get the hydration it requires. This iswhere the Kiehl's Dehydration Analyser Tool comes in. Itsinnovative technology gives a precise reading of your skin'smoisture levels, which in turn determines what products arerequired in order to restore balance.

To start the process, Adam pressed two tabs onto my face tomeasure the amount of sebum oil on my skin. Afterdetermining that my skin is slightly dry, we then discussed myskincare routine and any concerns I wanted to address. (Myonly concern is like most women over the age of 30: antiageing). He then pressed the dehydration analyser tool againstmy face, which gave a reading of 34.7% moisture and 15.6%oil. Anything below 30% indicates severelydehydrated skin,31 – 50% indicates slight dehydration.

Being in the slight dehydration bracket, Adam prescribed aplethora of products to boost my skins hydration and keep thedreaded crows feet at bay. He tested each product on theback of my hand, so thankfully, I didn’t even need to removemy makeup. I left the shop with a bag full of samples: UltraFacial Cleanser, Multi Corrective Cream, Line Reducing EyeBrightening Concentrate, Iris Activating Treatment Essence,Pollutant Defending Masque & Midnight Recovery Concentrate.

One week later, my skin has certainly reaped the benefits,

Brighton is saturated with tattoo parlours and decidingwhere to go can be confusing to say the least. Eden

Tattoo and Piercing Studio, located at Cocoon Healing ArtsCentre, is a refreshing change to its (possibly)intimidating counterparts.

The relaxed friendly vibe and allfemaleteam, provide the perfect environment in secluded surroundings for first timetattooer's and veterans alike. The before and after care advise is second to none, as are the products used: Clean Ink andQuantum Inks.

Artist Julie Jooke, has been tattooing for four years. Prior to this she studiedillustration and technical arts at Belgium’sequivalent of The Royal Academy of Arts. After graduation she decided to pursue herchildhood dream of becoming a tattoo artistand undertook an apprenticeship. Needlessto say, I felt that I was in very safe andcreative hands!

Having already gone under the needle a few years ago, I had become incrediblydisenchanted with my tattoo. The colours(which I no longer liked) had begun to fadeand some of the definition was also lost. Ididn't want a cover up, just to improve what was already there.I explained this to JJ, who photographed my tattoo and sentme a drawing of the fabulous revised version a day later.

I booked the appointment immediately and am extremelypleased with the results. The sachet of ‘Sorry Mum’ tattoobutter that I was given not only smells divine, but alsoaccelerated the healing process. I would wholeheartedlyrecommend booking a consultation today. Eden Tattoo and Piercing at Cocoon Healing Arts Centre, 2022 Gloucester Place, Brighton BN1 4AA, 07525 142221,01273 686882

When Thomasina Myers won Masterchefand announced that she would open a

Mexican street food restaurant I was impressedby the ambition. Could she, or indeed would shedo it? Well she did, not just once but eventuallycreating a chain of restaurants that have nowreached Brighton.

I have in the pastbeen somewhatdismissive of Mexicancuisine, but it wouldseem that this was mymistake, based onsome pretty poorofferings in the past.Over the last fewyears I have grown to like it far more.

Wahaca has confirmed that there is far moreto Mexican food than I had ever thought. Iwent along with Ms McD for a Saturday lunchand things kicked off well with an excellentmargarita and a mojito. Our waiter, Jordan, was delightful and we were very impressed bythe speed of the service, ideal at lunchtimeyes, but there was no pressure to rush either.

The menu is fairly long and if I had onecriticism, rather difficult to navigate, thedesign could be clearer in my view andalthough there are guides they are not thateasy to find. What we did find was a set menufeast that seemed like a great option fornovices – and it certainly was.

Of course that was before Jordan popped

the Postit of daily specials on the table. Well Icould not resist a Cornish crab taco so weadded that to the feast.

Food arrives as and when it is ready, not aproblem for two hungry people and the firstdish to arrive was corn bread with honeybutter, what a revelation, I want it often. Whatfollowed was truly delicious and verysatisfying. We loved the scallop & MSC shrimp

ceviche, a vibrant andpiquant dish. The porkpibil tacos were loadedwith succulent spicymeat and the chipotlechicken quesadilla was asatisfyingly unctuousdelight.

Ms McDactus lovedthe cactus & courgette tacos but I preferredthe summer pea & mint empanadas, I couldhave eaten them over and over again, and Iconfess to making a pig of myself with boththe sweet potatoes and finally the churroswhich arrived with both the rich chocolatesauce and a cup of the dulce de leche.

After the cocktails we drank a rich beer andfinished with great coffee (I stirred my squareof chilli chocolate into my latte to great effect). The feast at 34 was generous and a great wayto find your footing and next time I plan to gooff piste – and have more of those empanadas.Wahaca160 – 161 North Street, Brighton BN1 1EZ01273 934763wahaca.co.uk

If you have never had the chance to seeGeorge Dillon in action then now is the time.

26 years ago, in the hot and hopeful summerafter the Berlin Wall fell and before Saddamburned the oil wells of Kuwait, audiences andcritics in Brighton and Edinburgh rushed towitness this young Brighton actor’sastonishingsolo debut.Last seen atthe GardnerCentre in 1997that show, atriple bill ofworldpremieres withan unashamedtitle, isreturning toThe OldMarket in Hovefor one nightonly.

An outofwork actor's frustrations explodeover breakfast, an exskinhead recalls anexuberant racist graffiti spree with a ghostlytwist, and a wouldbe suicide sees a lostparadise and returns with a timeless messageof hope for our uncaring world...

Stunning the Punters (& Other Stories) isone man on a bare stage giving a bravura highenergy performance in three tales ofimagination run wild: Master of Café Society

Thriller Live!Three cheers for the creatorsof Thriller Live! For notweaving the brilliantrepertoire of MichaelJackson around somethreadbare plot. Seriously, the songs are good enoughto stand alone. The energyon the stage was quiteextraordinary, from thedancers and from theexcellent vocalists. Add tothis a blisteringly raunchyband who were more thanup to the task of recreatingthe sounds of Tamla throughdisco and funk to his laterepic balladeering days. Thelead vocalists are all good,Angelica Allen has a greatvoice but from time to timeshe was swamped by thesound system. Adam JBernard and ShaquilleHemmans are bothaccomplished vocalists whogive their all throughout, andSean Christopher certainlyhas all the moves. It is thevocal skill of Rory Taylor thatsteals the show, an amazingvoice that sounds closest toJackson’s in all itsincarnations, funkingbrilliant!Theatre Royal Brighton27 JuneAndrew Kay★★★★★

Brighton Open Air Theatre is an exciting, newish venue thatyou might like to visit over the summer, and Starboard

Festival would be a great place to start. Local theatre makerNaomi Alexander came up with the idea of a new festival oftheatre made with, by,and for children andyoung people afterenjoying a performanceat BOAT herself.Alexander explains that“I wanted to dosomething that wouldenable children andyoung people in the cityto discover this magic forthemselves and for BOAT to become part of their psychogeography of the city.”

Brighton Dome presents the closing event: an intriguing playby Kilter Theatre called The Illuminating Times of the DarklingSociety. The audience is encouraged to stay up late, pack atorch, and join a band of musicians and outsiders for anunusual expedition. Lina & Hersch (two siblings) try to findsolace in the darkness of a strange, unwelcoming land whilerunning away from mysterious creatures the Darklings.

Inspired by 18th century astronomers William & CarolineHerschel, Kilter's performance style includes live music, pedalorgan, cycle generators, mothlures and batdetectors.

Kilter's previous production The Last Post was praised as“utterly charming, tender, funny & wistful” in a five star reviewby Exeunt magazine – and they are known for creating lowcarbon productions in unusual locations – so it will be great tosee what they come up in the unique surroundings of BOATthis Saturday. The Illuminating Times of the Darkling Society, BOAT, Sat 16 July,Picnic from 7.30pm, £7, www.brightondome.org
