Birthdays and parties have been in my mind frequently of late. Iwas always jealous of friends who could have Summer partiesto mark their own personal celebration of existence, withbeach gatherings, outside

cooking and the opportunity for waterfights that don’t end in hypothermia. Mydancing was recently described as‘expansive and bold’, which is tact-speak for limb-apocalypse-in-motion, soa water fight puts my mal-coordinationto its best and most joyful use.

However, it never really occurred to me that the Summer birthdaybabies might be hankering for something... else.

This weekend I have been invited to a Christmas themed birthdaybarbecue. Who says you can’t have it all?! There is now a reason for thatleftover Christmas wrapping paper! But, to be honest, I can’t say I everthought a Christmas themed pair of shorts would ever be practicalouter-wear in any universe based in this side of the global hemisphere.

With that in mind I’ve started thinking about how my own birthdaycelebrations need not be corralled by the logic or practicalities of theseasons, or convention. I find myself considering why it’s now almostpar for the course that a pirate outfit is worth a purchase over a hire inthis town, and yet aliens, jellyfish, old skool console characters, favourite figures from literature, and pop stars of the 22nd centurynever really get a look in. Are we, the city that revels in eccentricity, resting on our laurels? I surely hope not.

My birthday isn’t until October so I’ve got loads of time to work outthe kinks, but currently I’m erring towards arriving at a pre-arrangedpub location in full on night-time attire. Wee Willy Winky eat your heartout. And the perfect opportunity for seeing those adult-sized Marvelpajamas all of my friends seem to have acquired for their birthdays. Themost comfortable glad rags in town, and so simple to roll home inafterwards. Now, what’s your birthday idea?

GET ON BOARD

We are very excited that some of the quail eggs have hatched. We now have three baby chicks and they are causing quite astir with students and staff alike. The year 8s have been busyweighing the eggs and plotting graphs, watching the weight

go down as the eggs developed. We are now thinking maybe of havinga fluffy pet corner. Exeter University launched its own micropig roomearlier in May, while Bristol and Leicester universities have drafted inpuppies in order to de-stress students prior to exams.

We have lots of exciting projects underway at the STEM centre andmore planned for next year. Itis fantastic to see that thenovel education techniquesthat we are introducing here atPACA have been endorsed bythe Royal Society. Thefollowing article written byProfessor Julian Williams andcolleagues, from ManchesterUniversity, is available on theRoyal Society’s website: ‘Re-envisaging STEM education:curriculum, assessment andintegrated interdisciplinarystudies’. Here is an extractfrom the Executive Summary:

“The school curriculumand its assessment areultimately determined bypolitics, but the debate cansometimes be informed byeducational research, andevidence-based argument. This report draws on aliterature review to inform avision for reform of theschool science andmathematics curriculum, onethat would likely take 20years.

The key, central strategy isto engage or re-engagechildren and youth in scienceand mathematics in waysthat are (i) authentic and (ii)interesting and meaningful tothe learners themselves. Theliterature shows above all that the system is failing in this regard today:the curriculum and its assessment are dull, encourage teachingnarrowly to low-level fact-based tests, fail to encourage creativity, andswitch the majority of learners off. Research has repeatedly shown, however, that learners and teachers can be excited by science andmathematics activity involving creativity, problem solving, modelling, and interest-led projects.

Any vision for reform needs to find ways to implement such activitiesacross the system. We therefore argue for a reform of the curriculum, assessment, teaching and learning to re-focus on learners’ interests, needs, and attitudes, rather than their grades, marks and league tablepositions. We suggest, for instance, that every student should beentitled to leave school with a portfolio of evidence of activity in STEMthat demonstrates who they are, what they are interested in, and whatthey can do.”

Thank you for this article Julian but why wait 20 years? At PACA weare already doing this; although admittedly just waiting forgovernment and employers to catch up. We are leading the way inreform from the frontline!

Iuse Facebook. I know it can bea time swallowing distractionand I am sure, like me, lots ofyou spend silly amounts of

time on there too.In essence I use it as a means of

keeping in touch. I like that I canchat to friends, reconnect withpeople that I have lost touch withand, as I have already written, play Scrabble. It is the Scrabblethat gobbles up my time and Ihave at least 13 games on the goat any given time. That’s mychoice – and not such a bad wayof whiling away the hours whenthere are so many moredistractions of a less satisfyingnature.

My worst vice, and I hazard aguess that I am not alone in this, isthe tendency to be drawn in to thesilly profile quizzes. You know thekind; What kind of dog would yoube?, In a past life I was… –silliness on the whole butundeniably funny, especially theones that claim to makeassesments of you character byanalysing your profile or by askinga few silly questions.

I’m not alone in this either, friends who I believe are rathersensible do them too, even themost serious minded of myfriends – and that puts a smile onmy face.

Recent quizzes, the online

version of those hilariousmagazine quizzes of old, havedeclared that I was, in a previouslife, a king, that I have masterlyrecall, a soaring intellect and astaggering IQ. They also declaredthat I look 31 which is hilarious asI am rapidly approaching 60.

How they do this is of courseutter nonsense, of course I do notlook 31, far from it, I look my ageand this is not something thatworries me. In fact if I did look 31 Iwould be terribly worried. I shouldof course say that I tend not todress my age, and I know thisbecause I look at people that Iknow who are my age, but notliving in the Neverland that isBrighton & Hove, and quite franklythey have gone to wine colouredcorduroy and anorak land. I’m notthere yet thank heavens.

Last weekend I had cause to gointo the Vodafone shop toupgrade my phone. It was ablisteringly hot day and as aconsequence the shop was really Follow me: latestandrew

quiet. I was seen immediately by acharming young woman whodealt with my needs and in anopen and un-pushy way, unlikethe online sales person who wasto say the least aggressive, somuch so that I abandoned myattempt to do the deal that way.

We had fun sorting things and Icame away with a smarter newphone and a reduced bill – result!

Towards the end of thetransaction though I could seethat she was somewhatdistracted, slightly giggly. In theend she confessed that shethought I looked remarkably like afamous person. Not for the firsttime in my life has this happenedbut this certainly was a first.

She explained in a roundaboutway, saying that her youngersister, 13, was something of ageek, a maths genius alreadystudying for a degree. I listenedwith interest, and with no ideawhere this was going.

It turns out that she thoughtthat I looked like Albert Einsteinand that he was her kid sister’shero. I didn’t need to look in amirror to see where she wascoming from. I do indeed havethat mad professor look at thebest of times, the new glassesfrom the boys at Specky Wren addto this and the fact that, due to afour week cold, I have failed to gomy favourite hairdresser Andrewat BaDu.

Of course once it was out of thebag all the other Vodafone staffhad a good look and agreed that Ireally do look like Albert Einstein. How sad then that it is only a lookand not his capacity for genius. Ioffered to let her take a selfie ofthe two of us to send to the sisterbut in the excitement of ‘Einstein’being in the shop this wasforgotten and I left without takingthe snap.

So Facebook thinks that I am a31 year old former king, and myVodafone pal thinks I look like amathematical genius and mymum thinks that I look like I needa bloody good haircut. I thinkmum, as always, is probablyclosest to the truth.

I’m a regular theatre goer, whichis hardly surprising for regularreaders as I review for Latest 7.I’m a great believer that a night

out at theatre does not have toinclude going out for dinner. Theatretimes certainly don’t fit in well withdinner time and it means eatingearly, or at least it does in Brightonand Hove as very few places will stillbe taking orders after the finalcurtain has come down.

There are however times when Isimply do not have time to gethome and eat before the theatre, and on those occasions I have a fewfavourite places to grab a tasty andinexpensive supper. Two inparticular.

You can often find me inCarluccio’s on a Monday or Tuesdayevening. I can easily be lured offpiste by the a la carte menu butmore often than not I stick with thefixed price menu.

I know, I hardly look like a fixedprice menu sort of a guy but theCarluccio offer is very good valueand rather tasty too.

This week I was off to see a rathergood, as it turned out, AgathaChristie at the Theatre Royal. I’moften joined on these occasions byMs CtM, a good friend, theatre fanand foodie. She too thought thatthe set menu at a very modest£10.99 for two courses was a goodidea, coupled of course with a glassof Sicilian white at £3.25.

Ms CtM started with the chickenliver parfait, which is my usualchoice. It’s always tasty, alwaysplentiful and unlike so manyrestaurants, comes with enoughtoasted bread to make sense of theamount of paté. She declared it verygood.

I decided to have the soup for achange, a very nice courgette basedvegetable soup with croutons and

heavy cream in the middle. It wasdelicious and more than generous. Ithought it might be too much butpersevered and managed to finish itoff.

Ms CtM moved on to the raviolifilled with spinach and ricotta, served in the traditional way withbutter and sage. It arrivedbeautifully presented and she loved

it so much that next time I plan totry it myself.

True to habit I chose the Milanesedi Pollo a flattened chicken breast, breadcrumbed and fried, withrocket and baby gem lettuce, yescarb free (well almost). I often have

this recently with an old friend, andit was superb. I love the whole thalithing and the fact that every mainelement is accompanied by theappropriate side dishes.

Living alone as I do I seldom orderan Indian take-away as to get thereal experience of lots of dishes, youneed to order too much. That wasuntil The Chilli Pickle launched theChilli Pickle Canteen, a take-awayservice that will deliver me acomplete dinner, beautifully boxedand piping hot with everything Imight need included.

I digress, I was talking about theirpre-theatre menu which is

exceptional and offers great valuefor such terrific food.

I did return to The Chilli Pickle aweek later for dinner on a Saturdaynight. Mr L and I took a punt onthem being able to give us a table attheir busiest time. Luckily enoughthey were able to fit us in – just –and we had one of the best meals Ihave had in quite some time, trulyspectacular and, for the first time, Imanaged to go the full three coursesfinishing with an epic rice puddingwith roasted figs and tutti fruitti ice-cream. Okay, I confess that I chosethe pud purely on the basis of thatice-cream and I was notdisappointed. The Chilli Pickle,17 Jubilee Street,Brighton, BN1 1GE 01273 900 383thechillipickle.com

Eating in hurry is not so bad, ifyou choose well and it is certainlyworth looking out for those specialoffers and fixed price menus. If youwant to spend more and take longerthen forget doing it on the samenight as a trip to the theatre or to aconcert.

There are no intelligent epics like 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia todayand in my opinion there never will be again. The overuse ofcomputer-generated effects has numbed us to the awe andwonder they once produced. A modern film running at over three

and a half hours with an iffy plot and no women would never capture ourattention and hearts in the way that looking at an image and knowing ithas been created using just a man and a camera does.

Peter O'Toole makes an unforgettable debut as TE Lawrence, theWelsh-born British Army officer who campaigned with Arab irregularforces during WWI. He is a brilliant and volatile leader who, after beingsent from Cairo to the Arabian desert to find Prince Faisal of Mecca, findshimself leading an Arab revolt against the Turks for the British.

Lawrence of Arabia takes a critical view of British imperialism in theMiddle East – depicting it as cold, calculating and resented by the locals. There is nothing simple about O'Toole's Lawrence, who discovers inhimself a taste forsensual ruthlessnessand is wracked withself-hate after beingcaptured and beatenby the Turks. It being1962, the film onlyhints at the sexualassaults the realLawrence wrote of.

When crossing thedesert, Lawrencemeets Sherif Ali of theHarith played by OmarSharif, an Egyptiansuperstar who wasreluctantly cast inpreference to whiteactors. He clearly hasthe sharpest lines withthe crackling jealousyand macho tension between the impossibly handsome O'Toole and theequally impossibly handsome Sharif hovering on the brink of the sexual.

Whilst this is not historically accurate it does have some grounding. Thereal Lawrence wrote admiringly of his "man-on-man loves", andbiographers conclude that he was most likely gay.

The story of ‘Lawrence’ is not founded on violent battle scenes orcheap melodrama, but on director David Lean's ability to imagine what itwould feel like for an audience to see a speck appear on the horizon ofthe desert and slowly grow into a human being.

Moreover on Lawrence as a personality (the persona that Lean, O’Tooleand screenwriter Robert Bolt create) is a sexually and sociallyunconventional man. He is so out of touch with the Arab existence andthe squabbles between tribes that he skims above them. It’s imperialoverconfidence at its best but he rallies the splintered desert tribes andwins a war against the Turks. PIER PRESSUREBRIGHTON’S ARTY

My showbiz hero for July? Easy. That burly security bloke whohauled a stubbornly resistant Damon Albarn off the stage at theend of his Roskilde Festival set in Denmark a couple of weeksago.

I say "at the end", it was almost four hours after the scheduled end, that was the whole problem. Damon and his Africa Express pals had beenplaying for nigh on five hours, dawn was approaching, and the man incharge felt that, well, no doubt theirs was a jolly super din, but maybe itwas time to say bye-bye.

Basically,Damon, put asock in it, pal. That was the gistof his message.Damon didn'twant to do anysuch thing with hishosiery, however, andinsisted onplaying on. So inthe end, notsurprisingly, theorganisers'patience ran out.In stepped MrBurly – and off,at last, went MrAlbarn. Nothingnasty orconfrontational, just veryeffective.

Now, I have tosay I've nothingagainst DamonAlbarn. I'mactually a hugefan. And in allhonesty, I'm notfussed if thismassively extended performance of his was breaking any licensing rules, keeping weary festival workers from their beds or what-have-you.

I just happen to believe there's an optimum time limit for festival sets, gigs etc. Just as there is, in fact, for many other generally pleasurablethings in life, such as films, plays, TV series, books, dinner parties, holidays etc. A point beyond which pleasure turns to purgatory and, broadly keen as you are, you'd like it to stop.

Festival sets, where an act is part of an extensive line-up, should neverlast more than 90 minutes, and only then if they're at or near the top ofthe bill. Gigs where they're the act everyone's come to see? Two hours, tops.

Films? You've got 105 minutes, then I'm walking out. Plays? Say whatyou have to say in a couple of hours, please, before my buttock crampskick in. Holidays? Please, not a whole fortnight. Ten days is plenty. TVseries? Six one-hour episodes or three 90-minute ones, I'm quite flexiblehere. But none of that 24-week, season-upon-season nonsense.

Dinner parties? Hey, come in, lovely to see you, please stay for fourhours, then kindly do one. Books? Two hundred and twenty-two words –exactly like the original paperback, funnily enough, of Gullhanger: Or HowI Learned To Love Brighton And Hove Albion, apparently now available asan Amazon Kindle e-book for an irresistible 99p.

And, before you ask the inevitable – magazine columns? Four hundredand fifty words. On the dot. Ignoring hyphens.

Count them if you don't believe me.Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the DailyExpress Saturday magazine. Hear him every Monday afternoon with GuyLloyd on Brighton’s Juice 107.2

Over the last ten yearsChichester Festival Theatrehas an enviable reputationfor staging extraordinary

work of all kinds, new plays, classicplays, comedy, tragedy and ofcourse musicals. Their reputation forrevisiting classic works of musicaltheatre is second to none and somany of these great productionshave transferred to the West Endwhere they have gone on to receiveeven further accolades and awards.

CFT have tackled not only thebiggest hits of the musical stage butalso some lesser known works, allwith the same energy and style, andtheir commitment to great theatreof all kinds, from those classics tonew plays like Enron, has servedthem well. Critical acclaim runs sideby side with their ability to drawinternational theatre stars toChichester, all keen to work with theexcellent team that gathers thereeach season.

So it is no surprise that right nowthere is a tangible buzz about theforthcoming production of Mack &Mabel. This musical comedy depictsthe true romance betweenHollywood legends Mack Sennett

and Mabel Normand, twotrailblazers of the silent film era.

Sennet was the genius behindthe Keystone Cops films, anobsessive and self confessedworkaholic. He fell in love withscreen star Mabel and she with himbut the story revolves around hisinability to show affection, the keyto show’s biggest number I Won’tSend Roses. It’s a great song and forthis new production is in the morethan capable hands, or should I sayvoice, of Michael Ball.

Ball is a consummateprofessional, a charming man witha keen sense of humour and atendency to self-deprecation. Noneof this however will detract from hisability to nail a role as was seen inhis acclaimed portrayal of theeponymous Sweeney Todd in C’samazing production. So dark washis performance that on theopening nights people were goingto the box office and asking forrefunds as Ball was not playing therole. Of course he was but this wasperhaps his darkest and his finesthour and the grim persona that hehad adopted was barelyrecognisable as the fun man that

The Sussex theatre festival thatspells West End Success

we know from his concert, radioand TV appearances.

On his recent concert tour Ballpreviewed I Won’t Send Roses andthe audience went wild. No doubthe will do the same when Mack &Mabel opens.

Mack & Mabel is alsochoreographed by Stephen Mear, another award winning Brightonbased theatre star whose work hasbeen seen on the internationalstage and at Chichester as well aschoreography he has directed SheLoves Me, a charming and seldomrevived musical. But his catalogueof hits is too long to relate here andhis work is best seen to beappreciated.

Key to much of CFT’s recentsuccess has to be the work ofJonathan Church. His directorial

skills coupled with hisprogramming have been verymuch the foundation of thecompany’s success. Earlier this yearArtistic Director Jonathan Churchand Executive Director Alan Finchannounced that they are to stepdown from their respective roles atChichester Festival Theatre at theend of September 2016, followingFestival 2016. There is little doubtthat they will be much missed – butthat they have set down a solidbase for the theatre’s futuresuccess.Mack & Mabel opened on 13 Julyand runs until 5 SeptemberTickets: £25, £3416 – 25 year olds: £8.50 – on salefor all performances from 10August, Box Officecft.org.uk, 01243 781312

You'll most probableknow the songs 'You CanGet It If You Really WantIt', 'Many Rivers to Cross'

and 'The Harder They Come', atrio of songs from the late ‘60sand early ‘70s that helped topopularise reggae and skamusic here in the UK.

The only currently livingmusician to hold the Order ofMerit, the highest honour thatcan be granted by the Jamaicangovernment for achievement inthe arts and sciences, JimmyCliff started writing songs at anearly age. "One night I waswalking past a record store andrestaurant as they were closing, pushed myself in andconvinced one of them, LeslieKong, to go into the recordingbusiness, starting with me," hehas said. His career took offwhen 'Hurricane Hattie'became a hit, while he wasaged just 14, in the early ‘60s.Island Records, via theirfounder Chris Blackwell, startedto take an interest and in 1967Cliff released his debut albumwith them. An early single,Vietnam, was called by BodDylan 'the best protest song hehad ever heard', but it wasn'tuntil the 1969 self-title albumthat Cliff had a big hit, with thesong Wonderful World,Beautiful People.

However, it was his starringrole in the Jamaican film TheHarder They Come (where Cliffplays a character pursuing acareer in music, before he fallsin to a life of crime), and the

accompanying soundtrack helpedto bring reggae and Jamaicanculture to an internationalaudience.

After a brief conversion to Islam(where he took the name El HadjNaïm Bachir) Cliff returned tomusic in the ‘80s, remaininglargely in the public eye, includingtouring with Kool & The Gang, release the Grammy Awardwinning album Cliff Hanger, singing on the Rolling Stones'Dirty Work album, singing withElvis Costello, and enjoying a bighit with his version of 'I Can SeeClearly Now'. As well as uprising acareer in film, more recently heperformed at the closingceremony at the 2002Commonwealth Games, theopening ceremony of the 2007World Cup, and saw (perhapsrather unfortunately) his song YouCan Get It If You Really Wantadopted by the Conservative Partyfor their annual conference. His2011 album Rebirth continues toshowcase his beautiful and soulfultenor voice, and his love of allthings ska, reggae and rocksteady.

MUSIC

As much as Brighton and the SouthEast is the centre of our world, forone month of the year the Scottishcapital becomes the focus of the

comedy universe as lots and lots ofcomics (did we agree that the collectivenoun was a ‘giggle’?) converge for theEdinburgh Fringe Festival. A show galleryof talent for the world’s TV executives andvenue bookers, August goes pretty darnquiet for most of the rest of the countrywhen this exodus takes place. So, in this last week of July, feast yourgiggle-gut on a mixture of practically-finished Edinburgh preview showsand local innovative funnies.

Over at the Caroline Of Brunswick the next seven days serve uppreview shows from Mark Steel, Nathan Caton, Mike Wozniak and MattForde, as well a good selection of local comics at Podium Comedy onSaturday – many of whom will also have razor-sharp material they’repreparing to take up North for the first time.

Otherplace at The Basement is also playing host to a mixture ofpreviews, respected local talent, and brand new comedy voices. It’s worthnoting that at this stage in the year what you’re essentially getting whenyou attend a preview is a fully formed top dollar TV-comic show for undera tenner. Many of them will probably be back in October for the BrightonComedy Festival, at which point they’ll cost twice as much for a ticket andjust be two months older. Not a whole lot of tweaking going on in thosetwo months, so do bag yourself an entertainment bargain.

Anyway, over at The Basement this week you can grab yourself previewshows from Beasts and Tom Parry, as well Off The Cuff Stands Up –combining the skills of the ten-year-established comedy improv troupewith turns from guest stand ups including Sameena Zehra, JamesMcDonnell, Dan Fardell and Roz Ryan. Plus there’s your monthly dose ofRabbit In The Headlights, Brighton’s longest serving new act and newmaterial night on Friday.

Plus, for even more previews just mosey over to Komedia for showsfrom Tiff Stevenson, Carl Donnelly, Adam Hess, Julian Deane, GarethRichards and Iain Sterling.

So get your fix of laughter and breathe it in deeply. There’s plenty intown to tickle all of the senses.www.carolineofbrunswick.co.ukwww.otherplacebrighton.co.ukwww.komedia.co.uk/brighton

EMPORIUM GOES NATIVEThe Jungle Book, Emporium, 12 July 2015 ★★★★★

Emporium do it again! A thoroughlyjoyous entertainment for kids that I,as an adult (well almost) reallyenjoyed. Mike Carter proves onceagain that he knows how to craft ashow for young people and what ajoy to see this classic Kipling storyuncluttered by the famous Disneysongs. Those songs, good as theyare, did become the core of the film, leaving the moral tale lost in theland of animation. At Emporium weget the Kipling delivered by a strongcast including an extremely wellrehearsed group of kids who takeon the roles of wolf cubs andmonkeys with great charm. Mowgliis played with appropriateinnocence and naivety by KamariRomeo, but from time to time hisvocals get lost. Rich Nair makes asplendid Shere Khan and MichaelAdams is wonderful as the gentlevoice of Akela. Amy Sutton isseductively slippery as aKa andSuzanne Proctor’s Bagheera issexily sinister, although her make-up was somewhat lacking.

Gordon Winter makes anhilarious Chief Monkey with hisinsane white Rastafarianperformance and terrifying dartingeyes, a superb performance. DougDevaney once again treats us to awonderful characterization as Baloothe bear, big in every sense he reallygets to the soft heart of thecharacter rather than Disney’ssimple buffoonery.Director James Weisz gives usanother great show, a simply lovelyset filled with atmosphere, clever

costuming and puppets, and agreat balance of story to fun.

If I have one criticism, and thiswill seem peevish given theexcellence that this companydeliver on such small budgets andlimited resources, it is that thelighting , whilst moody andatmospheric, lacks focus on theactors, often leaving them in thedark and losing the impact of facialexpression and sadly diction. I hopethat as this excellent theatre growsthere will be enough money in thepot to remedy this.

Three cheers for anotherexcellent show that will no doubtinspire kids to be the theatre goersof the future.Andrew Kay

An Audience With HelenLedererThe main issue with this show(informal chit chat with her goodfriend Jo Good) is that it tried to doeverything and instead did verylittle. Clearly designed to promoteher new novel, the format shouldhave centred on that premise, informing her fans on her writingprocess/inspirations and bookdevelopment. Instead we got abrief back story on her life, somecareer anecdotes, a bit about thebook, her various TV appearances(all for the money apparently, refreshingly honest in one way, amerciless sad indictment of thestate of TV in another) and somepoems from the audience (I wouldargue cynically designed to fill theshow). She’s led an interesting lifeand she’s engaging to watch. Life, story show or book promotion, choose one and stick to it.Connaught Studio, Worthing, 9 July2015Lee Stevens★★★★★
