LOVED UP

Jessica is eight years oldand one of the ‘Believe In

Magic’ children. She was firstdiagnosed withNeuroblastoma at the age ofthree, which then went intoremission spontaneously.

In December 2013, Jessrelapsed and her cancerreturned. They named itBoris.... Boring Boris! Shethen endured four cycles ofchemotherapy, followed bysurgery to remove Boris. Thiswas followed by a fulltreatment of radiotherapy andsix months of oral chemo. InDecember 2014, the family

were told that there was agood chance that Boris hadgone for good.

Sadly, Jess relapsed again inFebruary 2015. She then hadto undergo a whole year ofaggressive cycles of treatmentincluding Chemotherapy,Radiotherapy, Surgery &Retinoic Acid to try and ridherself of Boris. Thetreatment was unfortunatelyunsuccessful and she relapsedagain in February 2016.

Due to the amount oftherapy Jess has alreadyundergone, she is now unableto endure any further

Chemotherapyor Radiotherapy,as they haven’tworked. She and her familyfind themselves in the realmsof trial treatment at The RoyalMarsden Hospital. They havebeen told that once she is inremission, she will need tohave cancer treatment inAmerica.

This leaves the familyhaving to raise over£120,000, so that she is ableto get to the States for her lifesaving treatment. Le CabaretAvantGarde are aiming toraise as much as possible in

Fringe, flyering for my comedyshow, Paul Jones: TheNerdfather. It’s an hour ofstand up and multimediacomedy, about being a scifiand fantasy obsessed dad. The show takes the form of aguide to parenting for geeksand tells the story of mebecoming a father and notputting away childish things.I’m a professional prop costume maker by trade, and for thelast five years I’ve been making miniature scifi and fantasycostumes for my two kids.

Although the Brighton shows have passed, I will be backlater in the year, plus you can catch me at Bedford Fringe andother Fringes too!

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

Hmph. It’s a noise I find myself using increasingly. In fact, noises in general are stepping up as a great alternative to

clear diction and a varied vocabulary in my esteem. Theycommunicate so much, nuances dancing in the tone andvolume that skit along from mild dissatisfaction to all outapproach of war on the horizon.

Equally, there are sounds that can resonate with satisfactionand general happiness with the world – although for somereason they turn out to be more difficult to spell.

There’s an intimacy in the rejection of words, language, andgeneral articulation. Blowing raspberries at babies (and goodfriends) blows the cobwebs away and fosters an atmosphereof fun and frolics. A growl can be playful and a feral warningnot to get too close – and we’ve all heard those screams in thenight that unless followed by a peal of laughter can hint at agreat big story of late night shenanigans getting a little too outof hand.

So I’m hanging up my words for the greater good. As well asa dollop of curiosity as to what kind of reply might come back.

HANDBAGS AND GLADRAGS

What could possibly bebetter than watching

the world go by at a languidpace, while eating EggsBenedict and sipping a fluffyCappuccino on a sunnyafternoon? Being inches awayfrom a totally uniqueshopping experience whenyou're finished that’s what

This was a situation I foundmyself in recently, whenHerve and George kindlyinvited me for breakfast atCup Of Joe, the cafe at theheart of Kemptown TradingPost.

It goes without saying thatthe food was amazing.George's reputation forproducing top qualityFrench/Anglais breakfast fare

precedes him. What's not as widely known

though, is the wonderfulvariety of reasonably pricedvintage and contemporaryitems for sale, under the sameroof.

I have visited other fleamarkets in Brighton, andoften felt overwhelmed.Firstly with the amount ofitems available and secondlythe amount of people alsolooking at said items.

Kemptown Trading Post is abreath of fresh air bycomparison, mine was a trulyrelaxed shopping experience. The stall holders are veryfriendly and helpful, nothingis too much trouble. There'sjust enough of everything to

make browsing apleasure as opposedto a chore.

I was pleased toadd to my shoecollection whilethere. Among thebeautiful dresses, jewellery, nik naksand soft furnishings, Inoticed a fabulouspair of red shoes!

Anyone who knows me willtestify to the fact that I'm abig fan of a rouge heel. Bestof all they were my size andonly ten quid. Bargain. Iresisted the urge to put themon immediately and skiphome like Dorothy.

I had a thoroughlyenjoyable dining and

shopping experience. It wasrefreshing to be away fromthe hustle and bustle of thecity centre, and I willdefinitely be back.

Kemptown Trading Postoffers great food, friendlystaff and lots of variety. Whynot pop up some time and say hi?

I still don’t know how I got in this tricky dilemma betweenlove or lust? Over a year ago I fell head over heels in love. I

was stupid about it. Every second word was about him orabout me thinking of him. I was a mess but it was a wonderfulfeeling.

As fast as it started, it was over and I knew what I waslooking for. I knew what the songs were all about.

But I never had sex withhim, it wasn’t evensomething I felt I missedout on. Yet now I can’t getenough of it.

I’d fancied people before, but never felt like I wantedto rip someone’s clothes offlike I do with Peyton. I haveno idea what’s come overme. This animal attraction doesn’t seem to be calming downand with all this time we’ve been spending together, we’veactually become quite good friends.

We have inside jokes (pun not intended) and we seem tospend most of our time together inside and outside his flat. Many of my friends have worried that this haze of lust wasgoing to corrupt me and make me fall in love with him, but Idon’t feel that urge – which is surprising since I’ve been toldwomen can’t define between love and lust. I guess that’sanother lie we’ve been told all these years.

It’s just that with Peyton it is so easy. I don’t have to careabout what to wear or when to meet up with him and evenhow he’s feeling (well a little bit – I am a nice person). I didn’task him how he is or what his hopes and dreams are. We justwatch TV, make fun of each other and relax.

I do sometimes miss the romantic stuff though. I wish Icould cuddle at night, hold hands with or even kiss in public.Maybe I don’t have to choose between the two – can’t I haveboth?

I'm not a conventional dresser as those of you who have seenme will know. I like bright clothes, flamboyant clothes that

certainly make me stand out. I especially love bright shoes andin particular red shoes. when I was a child I loved my bright redStartrite summer sandals and when I was about seven I washeartbroken that my everexpanding feet had takenme into sizes that were nolonger available in red andonly in brown. Brown! Howdull!

A few weeks ago I wentthe opening of a new shoeshop where the lovelyLorraine Bowen sang anewly penned ditty and cutthe ribbon on an emporiumof footwear delights. She was wearinga fabulous pair in zebra pattern so Iwas keen to see what they did in mysizes. There were great shoes, baseballboots, casual shoes and formal too andsandals, really handsome sandals thatreminded me so much of those I hadas a child. Okay they were brown orblack, but they were a good shape. Ichatted to the man behind Wolkyshopshoes and he very kindly said that hecould perhaps make me a pair in red and a few weeks laterthey arrived and I love them, really love them.

Now I can offer one of you the chance to win a pair ofWolkyshop shoes, from the range in store, by answering thefollowing question.

In which country did Wolkyshop Shoes originate?Fill in your answer at www.wolkyshop.co.uk/latest7 and one

lucky winner will be walking in Wolky very soon!

Tune in to the Latest After Party, to kick start your clubbingweekend. It’s on Fridays, at 10.30pm, and repeated again

for clubbers returning from their night out (Saturday 4.30am).Hosted by upbeat dance music artist Osaro, you are sure to

have a fun time due to his quirky sense of humour and uniquepresenting style. Brighton based Mackenzie Bell was enlistedto be his sidekick and cohost in the first episode. Who knowswho will present with him next? Latest After Party is filmedand edited by Matt Page (University of Brighton).

The show aims to bring you current dance music trends, aswell as offer a space for new music videos to bebroadcast. Osaro also plansto interview DJ’s,producers and performers.

In the first Latest AfterParty programme,(broadcast throughoutMay), being a Brightonbased TV station, Osarokick started the show withthe one and only Fat BoySlim. He explained that it“just felt right to do so”.

Osaro then cheekilyintroduced his own musicvideo “We Be” which was written after his near deathexperience with meningitis, and told us that writing the songwas a cathartic experience for him.

Future shows will introduce Brighton based producer,Noaksy, who is featured on the album: ‘Pacha House 2016’,now at number two in the Official UK top 40 dance albumchart. Plus the Radiokillaz, who have hosted their own showon Radio One, as well as performing at Glastonbury.

Osaro said: “Enjoy the show, have a laugh and enjoy thedance of life”. Make sure you tune in!www.osaro.co.uk

It's a great time to be in Brighton. The sun has been shiningand the Brighton Fringe is well underway. There are so many

shows, it’s hard to choose what to see. I’ve been lucky though,as I have been asked to appear at some of my friend’s comedyshows.

I was invited to open for Josh Dillion and Cally Beaton’s'Unleashed' at the Hobgoblin. Unleashed is a great show, witha good contrast of comedians, from the deadpan and darkJosh Dillon, to the jolly, feminist and sexualised Cally Beaton. It’s been selling out, so get there early!

A few days later, I was back at the Hobgoblin opening forRick Murtagh's Show 'ProgRock Comic’. What a greataudience we had! This is a comedy show that won't discusstypical themes. No shockvalue, just honest humour.

At last year’s BrightonFringe, I was asked to doStuart Turner’s ComedyGame Show, 'Haven't A Clue'.I was so pleased when heasked me back again thisyear. Two teams ofcomedians pit their skills andwit against each other. It’scomedy game show meetsimprov. The audience get to participate as well. You can seethe show at The Caroline Of Brunswick.

One show that I'm not involved in, but can't wait to see atThe Craft Beer Factory, is 'Mummy I Don't Like Those Men'. Aninsight into the weird worlds of three up and coming Brightoncomics, with three very distinct voices: Joe Foster (SouthCoast Comedian of the Year 2015), Graeme Collard (MaxTurner Prize finalist 2015, Laughing Horse New Comediansemifinalist 2015), and Dave Fensome (SYTYF semi finalist2015, Laughing Horse New Comedian semi finalist 2015).www.brightonfringe.org

As a food lover, of all kinds, I am fascinatedby TV cookery shows and also by those

highlighting consumer rights. I recently saw atrail for an item on a daytime showannouncing features onrestaurant chains and howthey prepare dishes incentral kitchens and on theways waiters will use anymeans to get you to spendmoney.

Let's take a look at thatspiky topic first. Waiters, the lengths they will go toto make you spend money, the devious beasts!

According to the reporterthere are no depths to which they will not sink to make you buy food and drink.Apparently they are likely to tell you which ofthe dishes are their favourites. They mighteven sink as low as telling you about the dailyspecial, even highlighting special offers andmeal deals. And if they are really keen theymight be extra nice, smiling at you, even daringto touch you. I ask you!

I hope by now you are laughing because atthe time I was angry. What did the directorand producer of this consumer show notunderstand about the job of a waiter? Theirjob is selling you food and drink and of coursethey will try to sell you as much as they can asthat is what they are being paid for.

A waiter's job is not to try to persuade younot to have that side dish, or the delicious

pudding or even that second bottle of wine, farfrom it. And we do all have the right to saythank you but no.

I have the greatest respect for good waitingstaff, they have a hardjob sometimes andthey are seldom wellpaid. They have to dealwith grumpy chefs inthe kitchen and grumpycustomers in therestaurant.

The hours are longand antisocial, theywork when we are outhaving fun and all in allthey put up with a lot

and earn not a lot. So Mr TV reporter, take alook at it from their angle, put yourself in theirshoes. If you made programmes that noonewanted to consume I'm sure that you wouldsoon be out of work.

The item regarding central kitchens was farmore interesting and highlighted the fact thata lot of major restaurant chains get dishessupplied from large central kitchens. Well ofcourse they do, how else could they producewhat they do for the prices that they charge.

This is where we are so lucky in Brightonand Hove, with so many small independentfood businesses to choose from. If you want itcheap and cheerful then dine with the chains, they offer a great deal. If you want better thendig deep and support our brilliantindependents.

Marking the centenary of the 1916“Conscription” laws, Take the Space

bring their brand new play White FeatherBoxer to TOM this June. What does it take tobe better than the best?

It’s April 1967: in a shabby Bethnal Greenboxing gym, an elderly trainer, Jimmy, hearsthe news: heavyweight boxing champion ofthe world, Muhammad Ali, has defied the USMilitary by refusing to fight in Vietnam.

Jimmy reflects on the choice he himselfmade during WW1, when Conscription sentpacifists to prison or the firing squad: when he,at the peak of his boxing career and physicalprowess, stood up for what he believeddespite the terrifying consequences.

Now Jimmy faces a new dilemma: Jodesperately needs his help. Jimmy’s 70something and a Quaker. Jo’s just turned 16;she’s strong, talented, impulsive and angry.Does he have the strength or patience to tamethis wild young woman? Can he teach herdiscipline and respect?

Following previous success with Sam & I,Hanging Hooke, Dolce Via and Stella, Take theSpace now present a new play about pugilismand pacifism for the centenary of the passingof the notorious “Conscription” Laws of 1916.Chris Barnes plays Jimmy alongside PollyJordan in the role of Jo.

Writer and director Siobhán Nicholasexplains: “I wanted to explore – and honour –

the psyche of the boxer and also capture theculture of the ring; I had a hunch that focusingon a retired boxer who has a very personalassociation with conscientious objection couldallow me to come close to defining thequalities of bravery and duty.”

This extraordinary story is about impartingwisdom, finding courage, understandingbravery – and learning what’s worth fighting for.

Take the Space was founded eleven yearsago. Their four previous productions: Sam & I,Hanging Hooke, Dolce Via and STELLA havetoured across the UK and Ireland to TheMinerva at Chichester Festival Theatre, TheMill at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre,Ustinov at Bath Theatre Royal, DerryPlayhouse, The Royal Society, Theatr Clwyd,Harrogate Theatre, Belgrade Theatre inCoventry, The Rose Kingston, TOM the OldMarket in Hove, Eastbourne’s Devonshire ParkTheatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough,Oxford Playhouse BT Studio, GreenwichTheatre, The Dublin Festival of Curiosity, TheMarlowe Theatre, Canterbury and TheTraverse Theatre, Edinburgh. The Old Market, 17 June, 01273 201 801Tickets: £12.50 (£10 conc.)TOM's Friends 15% offAge: 12+ recommended, theoldmarket.com

Takács Quartet

The annual trip toGlyndebourne is always

a highlight and this year wasno exception. Starting withSchubert’s RosamundeString Quartet in A minor wewere treated to a familiarwork but one performedwith a lightness of touch thatbreathed an air of new lifeinto the piece that refreshedmy love for it. Next Webern’sLangsamer Satz, a work thatwhilst clearly in the classicalromantic form has elementsof modernity that Takácsdeliver with intuitive polish.

To say that as musiciansthey are connected maysound simplistic, but asperformers they are sublimeindividually and exquisite asa whole. Antonin Dvorák’sString Quartet in A Flatmajor takes influences fromtraditional Bohemian folkdance but there is a thrillingthread of modernity heretoo. There is a darkness tothe whole but not withoutmoments of hope and light. For an encore we weretreated to a pizzicato pieceby Bartok, a tantalizing endto a delightful afternoon.Glyndebourne, 15 MayAndrew Kay★★★★★

> Beth Orton – Singer songwriter is back with anew album and Brighton Festival dates

Back in the early ‘90s, Beth Orton made a name for herselfby hooking up with the likes of dance and electronic

pioneers the Chemical Brothers, William Orbit and RedSnapper, whilst exploring her own sound that could be looselydescribed as folkpopelectronica. In forging acareer she has, for the mostpart, emphasised this side, onalbums such as herbreakthrough debut, ‘TrailerPark’, and 2012's ‘SugaringSeason’. But, the release of‘Kidsticks’, her sixth studioalbum, sees her return to those electronic roots.

"This record doesn't have any acoustic guitars on it to speakof," says Orton. "I play keyboards and synths. A guy calledAndy Hung, we made the beats together, then I wrote to some loops, and then I brought in some live musicians. Itwasn't a record of great expectations, it was more a recordthat made itself. Even though it is electronically based, it is avery warm sounding record. It's still very songbased, but it's abeautiful sounding record. I'm very pleased with the way it hasturned out."

The day of the release of ‘Kidsticks’ sees the first of twoconsecutive dates at the newly refurbished AttenboroughCentre for the Creative Arts (formerly Gardner Arts Centre),and she's both excited to be playing again, and to be a part ofthis year's Brighton Festival. "I'm excited, but I'm nervous. But,I feel that is a good place to be. I heard a brilliant thing theother day that David Bowie said: 'You know you are in theright place creatively when your toes don't quite touch theground. You're just a little out of your depth'. And also, LaurieAnderson is curating the festival, which is extremely exciting."Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, 27 & 28 May, 8pm, £17.50

MUSICJEFF HEMMINGS

One of my favourite things about Brighton Festival is theopportunity to try new things for a great price. At the

time of writing, there are still £10 tickets available for twodance performances at theTheatre Royal and the Dome'sConcert Hall, so this is aperfect opportunity to try outworldclass dance in abeautiful venue. I grew upmostly attending rock gigs butAntony Gormley's 'Sutra' andHofesh Shechter's 'barbarians'are two of my favourite shows ever: beautifully fusing music, lighting and dance in a beguiling, glorious whole.

Correction sees the performers' legs stuck to the ground(reflecting their lack of freedom) while slants, falls andimbalances are “corrected” and the person restored toequilibrium. There will be subtle humour and poignantinteraction, which can be distinctly entertaining whenwatching dance, in a way unique to the form. A live soundtrackfrom four clarinetists (Clarinet Factory) will be a fascinatingpiece in itself, since their style takes in classical, jazz, minimalism and film music so we can expect some fundynamics and interplay with the performers.

The hugely popular Akram Khan returns to the Festival aftereight years, and ‘Until the Lions’ sees him perform with two ofhis company dancers and alongside four musicians performingvocals and “soundscape”. The prominent billing of themusicians reflects the integral role of music in modern danceperformances and bolsters its crossover appeal. Havingalready been given five stars by The Observer, who describedit as “thrilling and beautiful”, Khan’s latest show looks like itshould also make for a fine evening at an affordable price.Correction, Theatre Royal Brighton, 2425 May, 7.30pmUntil the Lions, Concert Hall, Dome, 26 27 May, 7.30pm

COMEDYVICTORIA NANGLE

With the Brighton Fringegoing on all month, it’s

a good idea to keep your earto the ground with regards toshows that create a buzz earlyin the run.

One such vibrating hotticket is Jane Postlethwaite’s‘Made In Cumbria’ show. Withtwo packed shows earlier inthe Brighton Fringe, the LambComedy at Nowhere Mancharacter treat is returningthis coming Friday andSaturday. A little bit dark, funny, thoughtprovoking, unusual and completely

engaging throughout, it’sworth catching Jane in thissmall venue for maximumenjoyment.

Last year two highlights ofmy Edinburgh Fringeexperience were the showsfrom Steve Bugeja and John

Hastings. This week both ofthese comedians have newworks in progress playing inthe Brighton Fringe, and asthey’re not yet fully formednot only will you be able tosee ‘under the hood’ at thecomic’s working and creatingmethods, but they’re also free(although a donation in thebucket when you leave isalways welcome). Both areplaying at the Caroline OfBrunswick, with Hastings’show on Friday and Saturday, and Bugeja’s on Monday andTuesday.www.brightonfringe.org

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

I’m constantlyamazed by the

diverse sources ofinspiration thatprovoke our Artyallies into a frenzy ofcreativity. Take GeoffHands’ latest work, for instance. Creatinga ‘chance’ colourpalette fromsuggestions given byfriends on Facebook,he made improvisedcompositions thatbecame the ‘California Gurl’series. (These were initiallyexplored as Katy Perry’s

California Gurls hit song wasplaying in the background onSpotify.)

This shift in moodand subject mattershows his truecommitment toexplore the colourfuland lyrical possibilitiesof abstraction. And theresults create anintriguing dichotomy:between anabstraction originatingin observing the visualworld, complementedby pushing theboundaries of his

painting. See more in our newbook Art in Brighton 2016.www.artymagazines.com
