A design competition was held by the culinary arts program at NAIT. The goal was to design a space within one of the multiple courtyards on NAIT’s main campus that served as a functional garden and bee habitat.Thechallengewastofitalloftheprogramsneedsintothisconfinedspaceaswellasprovideenoughsunexposureforthegardenandplantmaterial.Usingthebuildingsfloorplan,themasterplanfootprintwascreatedinAutoCad.A3-DmodelwasthencreatedinSketchUpandusingIRendertheMasterPlanandperspectiverenderswerecreated.UsingPhotoshoptheplantmaterialandpeoplewereaddedandtheover-allcolorenhanced.Finallyatech-penstylefromSketchUpwasusedasanoverlay.

Kuriakos

Kuriakos is a 160 acre site located in Sylvan Lake, Alberta which is the home of a summer camp. The goal of this team project was to incorporate the environmental goals and guidelines of the Kuriakos committee, which included trails, native tree species and a water feature in addition to multiple recreational programs. The master plan was developed as a team using AutoCad and Photoshop. Colors are used for different trail types for added leg-ibility. Individually, we then created the 3d perspectives.

Site Analysis & Inventory

The inventory and analysis process help to determine conditions and elements on the site. This informa-tion guides the design process. Sun path, prevailing wind direction, slope, and the surrounding area are all included. In this instance (right page) the site grading plan was traced onto sketch trace and the symbols, writing and color was drawn on top. In the end, the sketch trace was scanned at 300dpi.

Hand Rendering

Chartpak markers, pencil crayons, and technichal pens of different line wieghts were used in these graphics.Intheperspectives,thebuildingwasmadefirstinSketchUp.AftertheSketchUpbuildingperspectiveswereprinted, they were traced and the people and plant material were added around it.
