Indian Smart City Updates
India is One Step Closer to Safer Roads with the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016
Every year, approximately 1.25 million people die in road traffic
crashes. In 2015, India recorded 146,133 road traffic fatalities, which
means that we account for over 11 percent of the global numbers.
While India is home to roughly two percent of all motorized vehicles
globally, our roads are some of the most dangerous in the world. Ex-
perts agree that road safety needs a safe systems approach. A big de-
terrent to this in India, however, is the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA)
1998, which prioritises vehicles. This is soon going to change.
In August 2014, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) drafted a new Road Transport
and Safety Bill for public comment. Several revisions were made, but the bill still faced significant political
opposition. The bill was criticised as being too revolutionary, and too top-down. In November 2015, India
became a signatory to the Brasilia declaration and committed to reducing road fatalities by 50 percent by
2020.
To meet this commitment, MoRTH took a consultative approach by establishing a Group of Ministers to
look into the issue and get buy-in from state governments. This group decided that ...

Smart cities must work with connected cars
By 2017 worldwide spending on connected vehicles will be $29,6-billion and government spending on in-
telligent transportation systems will be $16,5-billion, according to the International Data Corporation
(IDC).
A new IDC PlanScape, “Collaboration Between Automotive OEMs and City Leaders for Implementing
Connected Car and Smart City Solutions”, offers practical guidance to further explore how IT and non-IT
leaders in automotive manufacturing and state and local government can collaborate to provide new and
improved opportunities and services in urban environments.
Automotive OEMs face an urgency to evolve their product to compete with other transportation options
and smart city officials need to integrate with new technologies in automobiles for the future smart street...

Are smart city transport systems vulnerable to hackers?
It wasn't so much the word, but its position that caused New Jersey
photojournalist Lori Nichols to turn her car around on a highway near
Atlantic City close to midnight to snap a photo.
The word was lit up in bulbs on a freestanding temporary sign - the
type that normally says "road work ahead" or "slow down".
The NJ.com reporter wrote a story about it the next day.
The sign stayed that way for several hours, she says. "When I had a
chance to call the local police department, Hamilton Township in At-

5G key to unlocking digital future including virtual reality
The term “virtual reality” conjures up a wide variety of images, depending on
who you ask. Some think of a scene from Minority Report, or people wearing
“goggles” at gaming conventions. The less glamorous but just-as-exciting reali-
ty is that this technology has the potential to revolutionize everything from com-
plex medical procedures, to the way high-risk military and police training exer-
cises are conducted, to immersive education.
We’re on the cusp of mobilizing ground-breaking innovation that can make virtual reality a fixture in our
everyday lives moving forward. But before we can successfully create a world incorporating virtual reality,
we must first implement a missing puzzle piece. ...

Securing connected transport by Christine Cavigioli, VP Automotive at Gemalto
The Internet of Things (IoT) is going to completely revolutionise transportation
in our cities, with intelligent buses, smart trains, high-tech tubes and connected
cars all set to transform urban commuting and moving around cities from a high
power, high emission task to an economically and environmentally friendly expe-
rience.
That, at least, is the tantalising promise from vehicle manufacturers, IoT travel app developers and trans-
portation technologists: and the end result of adding Internet Protocol connectivity to millions of vehicles,
roads, railways and urban metro systems. ...
