1.INTRODUCTION 1.1 SCOPE OF THIS MANUAL This manual provides installation, operation and maintenance instructions for GNR LP3000 lapping machine. You must use the machine as specified in this manual. Read this manual before installing and working. Important safety information is highlighted as WARNING and CAUTION instruction; you must obey these instructions. The use of WARNINGS and CAUTIONS is defined below. WARNING Warnings are given where failure to observe the instruction could result in injury or death to people. CAUTION Cautions are given where failure to observe the instruction could result in damage to the equipment, associated equipment and process.

1.2 DESCRIPTION AND SUGGESTIONS FOR SAMPLES PREPARATIONS FOR SPECTROMETRIC ANALYSIS The lapping machine LP3000 has been properly designed for sample preparation for optical emission spectrometric analysis. Aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, tin, cast iron, steel can be easily prepared for analysis. Changing the cutting tool you can switch between different materials. Using the mandrel either the clamp however shaped samples can be cleaned. The grinding materials used for the preparation of the surface of specimens prior analysis by optical emission spectroscopy can contaminate the surface and thus produce erroneous results. That’s why GNR designed LP3000 lapping machine. Cutting tool removes material from the surface and no contamination can occur. Proper design also provides good planarity and right roughness of the surface.

2.2 MECHANICAL DATA
• DIMENSIONS : 42 X 52 X 77 CM (without the table)
• OPERATING AND STORAGE CONDITIONS: no limits about room conditions (temperature and humidity)
Ver.00 Jan. 2009 pag. 8 di14
2.3 ELECTRIC DATA
• ENGINE : single-phase asynchronous engine, 220 V, kW 0,18, 50 Hz, 2800 rotations/min, 1,8 A ( 380 V and three-phases engines are available on customer’s request).
3. UTILIZATION RULES
• Connect the machine to a shoe with the same voltage as written in the plate applied to the machine ( 230 V / 380 V).
• Select the cutting tool you want to use. 2 cutting tools are available: a grinding wheel and a milling cutter.
THE GRINDING WHEEL
Ver.00 Jan. 2009 pag. 9 di14
THE MILLING CUTTER THE GRINDING WHEEL (cod. SPM 037) is usable for cast iron, ferrous samples and titanium base samples. THE MILLING CUTTER (cod. SPM 036) is usable for other non ferrous samples (brass, aluminium, zinc,…)
• Open the door and lock the select the cutter tool (M4 screw).
Ver.00 Jan. 2009 pag. 10 di14
• Select the proper sample holder. 3 sample holders are advisable: - standard mandrel ( cod. SPM 034)
STANDARD MANDREL
- mandrel for small samples (cod. SMP 015)
MANDREL FOR SMALL SAMPLES
- magnetic plate (for ferrous samples) (cod. SPM035)

• Lock the sample holder
Lock the sample into the sample-holder.
• Rotate the level up to the ending stroke. ATTENTION: if you do not push the sample to the ending stroke, the engine will not start.
Ver.00 Jan. 2009 pag. 12 di14
• Close the door. ATTENTION: if you do not close the door, the engine will not start. A security micro switch inside the cover prevents the engine from starting when the cover is open.
• Start up the engine. Cutting tool starts rotation
• Move foreword and backward the sample very slowly.
• Start rotating the hand wheel for vertical advancement of the cutting tool.
• THE SLOWER IS THE MOVEMENT, THE BETTER IS THE SURFACE OF THE SAMPLE ( NO STEPS ON THE SURFACE)
• REPEAT THE PASSAGE AS LONG AS THE CUTTING TOOL DOESN’T PRODUCE TURNINGS ANY MORE.
• NO MORE THEN 0,2 MM ADVANCEMENT of the cutting tool are advisable.
• START MOVING LEFTWARD THEN RIGHTWARD THE SAMPLE.
• Push red button to stop the machine. 4. MAINTENANCE No oil is required inside the engine. Open the vacuum cleaner to remove the turnings. Remove turnings from the rails. Oil the rails THE LAMP Halogen lamp 30 W 12 Volt is mounted.

REAWAKEN PROCEDURE FOR THE GRINDIG WHEEL Put the proper stone (cod. S053) into the sample holder.
Use the stone as a cutting tool itself and remove about 3/10 mm from the surface of the wheel (3 notches of the nonius).
This procedure is recommended before removing about 0,5 mm (or more) from the sample.
