LAOAG

General Description

The City of Laoag, llocandia's "Sparkling Gem", offers a discovery of charming surprises, lush vegetation and scenic beaches, highland lures and environs steeped in history. 488 kilometers away from Manila, Laoag is located at the west central part of the province of llocos Norte bordering China Sea.

The name of the city is derived from the Ilocano term "Laoag", meaning light/ brightness. The name also speaks of what it has become: a center of growth and development in the northern part of the country, a city for the convergence of people, and as a gateway to the many interesting places in the province which, like Vigan, is rich in history.

Laoag is a bustling city with modern edifices housing private and government offices, educational institutions, shopping and entertainment centers, and other conveniences but it has retained part of its old-world charm. The centuries-old Cathedral of St. William The Hermit, with its massive belfry, still stands at its center as a concrete proof of the remarkable religiosity of the llocanos while other ancient landmarks nearby remind one and all of the industriousness a hardy, self sufficient (and with a reputation for thriftness) people.

Very much a part of its old-world charm is the city's local gastronomic delights: finger-sized but big in flavor Laoag longganisa (home-cooked style sausages), bagnet (deep-fried pork belly rinds), sukang iloco (sugar cane vinegar), basi (sugar cane brew aged in earthen jars), dinardaraan or dinuguan (pork meat and blood cooked with spices and vinegar), and the pinakbet (a mix of garden vegetables stewed with fish sauce or shrimp paste generically called bagoong). This mouth-watering native fares are for the asking in downtown restaurants and, for a touch of local color, in food stalls (carinderias) in the city market.

As a gateway to the many interesting places in the Ilocos Provinces, Laoag City has a major plus factor: its excellent road network within the city limits or out into the destinations, including Ilocos Norte's popular beaches such as the Currimao, La Paz, Seksi Beach, Pagudpud, the Saud Beach, and the Fort Ilocandia Beach with the added attraction of the geologic phenomenon – the sand dunes, and the magnificent views all throughout its jagged coastlines.

How to get there

By Air

There are scheduled international flights to Laoag International Airport from Guangzhou (China) and Kaoshiung (Taiwan) via China Southern Airlines and Far Eastern Air Transport.

From Manila, visitors can take a 45-minute flight via Philippine Airlines, Asian Spirit, and Cebu Pacific Airlines from the Manila Domestic Airport to Laoag International Airport, located at Barangay Gabu, about six kilometers southwest of the City Proper.

Domestic chartered flights are also available from Basco, Batanes to Laoag City.

Visitors can also take the eight-hour ride on board airconditioned buses operated by seven (7) Laoag-based bus companies.

The most common mode of transportation within the city are buses, mini-buses, jeepneys and tricycles. These public utility vehicles operate within the city proper to rural barangays; from Laoag City to other municipalities of Ilocos Norte and to nearby provinces like Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. Tricycles also abound for citywide commuters. Despite rapid modernization, the calesa (horse drawn carriage) has managed to survive and still continues to ply the streets of Laoag City.

BANGUI WINDMILLBangui, Ilocos Norte

It is a 24.75 MW power generation plant consisting of 15 units Vestas NM82 wind turbines rated at 1.65 MW each. The turbines are on shore and arranged in a single row spaced approximately 326 meters apart. All 15 wind turbines are connected to the Luzon grid and are the sources of power of the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative via Transco Laoag.

CAPE BOJEADOR LIGHTHOUSE Burgos, !locos Norte

Built in 1892, the lighthouse is a concrete structure about 120 feet in height and situated on top of a mountain. It sends signals to ships passing by the cape facing the northern portion of the South China Sea. The lighthouse was built without the aid of steel during the Spanish regime.


DAP-AYAN TI ILOCOS 1900 St., Bgy. 25, Laoag City

Dap-ayan is an llocano word signifying a gathering place, much like a permanent community center. Dap-ayan Ti llocos showcases the varied cuisine, arts and crafts of the province. Here you can buy popular native delicacies while shopping for local crafts. Dap-ayan Ti Ilocos operates under Gameng, a non-stock, non-profit organization which currently manages the llocos Norte museum.

GENERAL RICARTE NATIONAL SHRINE Batac, Ilocos Norte

Located at the heart of Ilocos Norte, the shrine was built to honor Gen. Artemio "Viborg" Ricarte who showed his patriotism and heroism during the Filipino-American war and during the Japanese occupation. The shrine features a life-size bronze statue of Gen. Ricarte, a viewing deck, bas-relief wall that depicts historical events, museum and fountain.

LAOAG BRIDGE Laoag City

Formerly Gilbert Bridge (constructed in 1884 and named after then Governor Newton Gilbert), its present structural design was intended to suit the demands of the times. It traverses the pristine Padsan River and serves as the "gateway" to the City of Laoag.

What used to be the Gabu Airfield is now considered the "new northern gateway" to the Philippines. This facility was converted into an international airport because it is strategically located and caters to flights coming in from Taiwan, Kaoshiung, and Mainland China.

Barangay La Paz (known as Pandayucan in ancient times) boasts of one of the unique spots in the city — the sand dunes. Locally named as Bantay Bimmaboy, the sand dunes, shaped like a pig, attract not only locals but foreigners as well. Declared as a geological monument, the vast sand dune formation offers a fine vista of the South China Sea.

At the foot of the cliff of the North Cordillera Mountain Range is the 12-km winding bridge known as the Patapat Bridge, popularly known as the French Riviera of the North. At the upper part of the cliff, one can still see the etched footbridge that was the only link between Ilocos and Cagayan Valley in the 1960's.

While in the middle of the Patapat Bridge, one can see the panoramic view of the verdant mountains and the sea below. A glimpse of the old footbridge adds grandeur to the breathtaking view.


ST. WILLIAM'S CATHEDRAL Laoag City

The Augustinians built the church of Italian Renaissance design in 1612. Its unique 2-storey facade is held by four pairs of coupled columns. The deeply recessed niche shows the image of St. William the Hermit, the patron saint of Laoag City. It was said to be the first religious edifice and one of the biggest churches that the Spaniards built in Ilocos Norte.

STA. MONICA CHURCH Sarrat, Ilocos Norte

Built facing the river in Sarrat, approximately 7 kilometers east of Laoag, this century-old church is of neo-classical and baroque architecture. Beside it is a ruin of an old building and a museum.

SINKING BELLTOWER Laoag City

The Bantay Bell Tower, located right across St. William's Cathedral, is reputed to be the tallest, most solid and most massive church bell tower in the archipelago. Now referred to as the Sinking Bell Tower, this 45-meter-high bell tower is known to sink at the rate of one inch every year. Old folks say that men on horseback used to ride into the main entrance. Today, visitors have to stoop to enter the tower.

In the olden days, Spanish friars built bell towers at a distance from the church for fear that these would crash into the church during violent earthquakes. The Bantay Bell Tower was no exception.

TOBACCO MONOPOLY MONUMENT Laoag City

The Tobacco Monopoly Monument was erected in 1882 to commemorate the gratitude of the people of the Province of Ilocos Norte to His Majesty, King Alfonso III, Q.D.G. for lifting the tobacco monopoly law. The monument is considered the only one of its kind in the country.

VIGAN

General Description

Vigan, the capital of the Province of Ilocos Sur, is a town so seemingly impervious to time it has remained unchanged since the 16th century. In fact, it is the only town in the Philippines with so many preserved historic sites — more than 180 edifices have been catalogued that the UNESCO added Vigan in its World Heritage List on December 2, 1999.

The history of Vigan dates back to the 15th century when it was an important trading port as ships from China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries stopped by and traded with the people of the cluster of villages known as Samtoy - a contraction of sao mi daytoy, meaning "this is our dialect". It was this town, named after biga, the wild erect plant with very large ornate leaves growing abundantly in the banks of the rivers Govantes and Mestizo, that Juan de Salcedo, grandson of the conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, found in 1572 while he was looking for possible ports for galleons.

Salcedo laid down the blueprint for the city with the vision to create a town similar to his Spanish hometown of Castille. He wanted it to be a piece of Spain in the Orient. He also made a will naming the Ilocanos as his heirs to his encomienda.

When Salcedo died less than two years after he settled in Vigan, the Augustinian friars presided over the shaping of the citadel city as he envisioned: they constructed a grand cathedral (St. Paul), influenced the building of massive mansions with red-tile roofs and spacious balconies of ornately carved wood, and the laying out of cobblestone streets. This concept of town planning and building continued in Vigan (and the rest of the Ilocos region) more so when the seat of archdiocese of Nueva Segovia was transferred there in 1758.

Under the Spanish friars, Vigan became the "piece of Spain" Salcedo envisioned it to be. Spared from rebellion and from the ravages of wars, Vigan has hardly changed since the 16th century. To this day, its culture and townscape have no parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

To UNESCO, Vigan represents "a unique fusion of Asian building design and construction with European colonial architecture and planning" and "an exceptionally intact and well-preserved example of a European trading town in East and East Asia".

To the visitor, a trip to Vigan is a journey into the past.

How to Get There

By Air

Laoag International Airlines has scheduled flights (once a week) to Laoag. Travel time is 1 1/2 hours flight from Manila to Laoag and 1 1/2 hours by land from Laoag to Vigan (80 kilometers).

Charter and private planes use Mindoro Airport, a secondary airport located at Barangay Mindoro in the city. It has one asphalted runway, 900 meters long and 30 meters wide.

By Land

Vigan is 408 kilometers from Manila, 80 kilometers from Laoag City and 139 kilometers from San Fernando, La Union.

By car from Manila, pass through the North Luzon Expressway, exit at Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga; pass by the towns of Capas, Tarlac, Paniqui in Tarlac; the towns of Carmen,Urdaneta, Villasis, Binalonan, and Pozorrubio in Pangasinan; the towns of Sison, Rosario, Agoo, Bauang and San Fernando City in La Union.


Vigan City has a sufficient transport system. There are different bus companies operating within the vicinity such as: Philippine Rabbit Bus Line, Dominion Bus Corp. and Partas Trans. Co. They operate direct bus services from Vigan City to Manila, Baguio, Laoag and other parts of Luzon.

Mode of transport within the city is purely land base. Vehicles for public use include jeepneys, tricycles and calesas. Buses, mini-buses and jeepneys provide transportation to places outside Metro Vigan. The Metro Vigan transport system is serviced by tricycles, which are color-coded for purposes of identifying the municipality to which they belong. A horse drawn vehicle, locally called "calesa", is also servicing the locality. It is an ideal transportation for sightseers, particularly tourists.

Tourist Attractions

ABEL WEAVERSBarangay Camangaan, Vigan City

Abel-weaving is one of the few surviving traditional crafts in Vigan. Best known for this are the Abel weavers of Barangay Camangaan who offer a variety of intricately designed colorful abet cloths for sale. Historically, the high demand for the famous handwoven Abel Iloco nearly killed the Spanish weaving industry during the galleon trade era.

ARZOBISPADO OR ARCHBISHOP'S PALACE / MUSEO NUEVA SEGOVIAVigan City

Completed in 1783, the Arzobispado or Archbishop's Palace is the only surviving 18th century arzobispado in the country. It served as the headquarters of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in 1889 and later became the official residence of the Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. The Arzobispado features sliding capiz windows and cut-out decorations with floral motifs. Its Museo Nueva Segovia houses a collection of priceless ecclesiastical artifacts and statuaries, archdiocesan archives, prints of old pictures of baroque churches, portraits of bishops, throne room and other episcopal paraphernalia. Visits can be arranged from Monday to Friday.

CALLE CRISOLOGO Vigan City

The street brings back the mood of the historic Spanish times and, at the same time, makes locals and tourists alike, feel relaxed at the atmosphere among the old ancestral houses. It is located at the heart of Vigan and is also an excellent spot to shop for souvenir items.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. PAUL Vigan City

A massive structure in the distinctive Ilocano baroque architecture, the Cathedral of St. Paul was built by the Augustinian priests in 1574 but was completed only in 1783. The cathedral is the setting of many religious festivities attended by devotees from outside the province.

DAMILI VILLAGE AND BARANGAY BULALAVigan City

The damili is one form of terra-cotta craft considered to be indigenous to a number of communities in Vigan City. The damili craftsmen of Barangay Bulala produce cooking pots (banga), water vessels (karamba), firewood and charcoal-fed cooking stoves (dalikan, pagugingan), water and animal-feeding basins (bakka, paso), plant pots (masetera), pipes used as well sidings (lusob) and the most in-demand among the various damili clay products, the Vigan Tiles.

These mouth-watering kankanen (native-rice delicacies) are mostly made in Barangay San Jose, a flourishing agricultural community near the Heritage Village. Barangay San Jose envisions its community to be a sustaining kankanen producer in the city and most women of the barangay are engaged in the making of these rice delicacies.

PAGBURNAYANLiberation Boulevard, Vigan City

Pagburnayan literally means "the place where burnay is made". The burnay is an earthenware jar crafted by a potter's hands with the aid of a potter's wheel. It uses fine sand (anay) as a tempering material and fired at a high temperature in a huge brick-and-clay ground kiln that makes it harder and more durable than other terra cotta. Burnay technology was brought to Vigan by Chinese artisans, who, according to Vigan folk historian Damaso King, came from Kwi-Sao, Chun-chin province in Mainland China.

SIMBAAN A BASSIT OR CAMPOSANTO Quezon Avenue, Vigan City

The Simbaan a Bassit is actually a cemetery chapel that was built in 1852 to honor the Santo Cristo, or " Apo Lakay" among Ilocanos, for saving Vigan from a plague that ravaged it. UNESCO considers this small structure as a jewel because of its baroque style facade crowned with an espadana which are openings at the top of the facade from which bells are hung.

SINAIT CHURCH Vigan City

Enshrined in this century-old church is the 17th century image of the Black Nazarene found floating in a sealed casket along the coast of Sinait. Believed to have caused a miracle by aborting a plague that hit Vigan during the 18th century, many flock to the shrine to celebrate the feast of the Black Nazarene every 3rd day of May.

SYQUIA MANSION Vigan City

It houses the memorabilia of the late former President Elpidio Quirino, a native of Vigan.

VIGAN ANCESTRAL HOUSES/VIGAN HERITAGE VILLAGEVigan City

Like the shop-houses in Asian trading cities like Melaka, Penang and Kuching (Malaysia), Macau, Singapore and Hoi An (Viet Nam), the Vigan house was built on a larger scale than its Asian counterparts. The lay out and partitioning of the Vigan house were designed for specific purposes.
