Dear Lakeview Families,
I am amazed at how quickly things move during the school year. Last week’s dance went very well and the students were great. I really appreciated our parent volunteers. We had a number of parents come out and chaperone, work in the snack bar and just generally support our efforts. Thanks to everyone who pitched in!
Progress Reports are just around the corner. Please make sure to monitor your student’s grades via the Aeries Parent Portal. Students know when their parents are checking on a regular basis. It really helps to keep them on track. There will not be another newsletter before parent conferences on Thursday, October 1
st so I
want to provide some information now. The conferences will take place in the gym from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Teach-ers will be available to answer questions regarding the progress re-ports. Students will receive their progress report on Wednesday, September 30
th and there will also be copies available on Thursday.
The conferences are set up for brief questions and concerns. If you need to meet with a teacher or teachers in more depth, then please ask that a time be set up on another day. The goal is to get stu-dents on the right path so they can finish the quarter on a positive note.
Volleyball season is under way at Lakeview. The school has a boys and girls team. The teams are made up of a mix of 7
th and
8th graders. The teams played this last Monday vs. El Camino at
home. They will also be playing at home on Monday, September 21
st vs. St. Mary’s. It would be great to have a supportive crowd at
the games. The girls play at 5 p.m. and the boys at 6 p.m. Our PTSA will be running a snack bar: All proceeds go to supporting programs at the school. Sports are just one way to get involved at Lakeview. In future newsletters, I will highlight our FIRST Lego League team and Safe School Ambassadors. Remember the Dream, Believe, Act, Achieve motto is just not for classroom perfor-mance. We want our students to have a variety of experiences. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Ted Lyon, Jr.

CONFERENCES
Parent/ teacher conferences
Thursday, 10/01
1:30 - 3:30 and 5:30 - 7:30.
In the Lakeview Gym
This is your opportunity to meet your student’s teacher
and discuss their progress. Bring you student—no appointments
Homework Club
Do you need a quiet place to work on homework—or access to a com-puter ? Come to Homework Club in the Lakeview Library—every Tuesday and Thursday 3:30—4:15.
Dear Lakeview Parents
Results of your student’s performance on the new computer-based tests have been released. These are
the tests our students took this past spring, replacing the old STAR tests. The scores you’ll be receiving
will tell you how your child is doing under Common Core, the updated learning standards for math and
English language arts.
We’ll send your child’s results when we receive them from the state in a Student Score Report (sample can be found here: http://bit.ly/1hKTuuz. Students will receive an overall score for each subject, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000. This score shows if students met, did not meet or exceeded expectations for their grade. The second page of the report includes a further breakdown of that score, providing in-dividualized information on your child’s academic strengths and potential challenges. The new assess-ments are fundamentally different from the old tests, so you shouldn’t try to compare these results with your child’s previous scores – they’re measuring different things. These results are a starting place for a detailed record of your child’s academic progress, which will help you, and our school, give them the support they need to succeed. The California Department of Educa-tion has released a short video explaining the Score Reports, in English (http://bit.ly/1NNUtpN) and in Spanish (http://bit.ly/1JslGeG).
You can read more about the Score Reports at the California Department of Education Website (http://bit.ly/1LC1Uy3). A parent guide complete with sample questions can also be found on the website for the following grade spans:
Grades 6-8 - http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/documents/sbparentgde68.pdf
If you have questions, then please contact the school.
Sincerely,
Ted Lyon, Jr. Principal

If you have creative talents, she wants you! Come check it out in the MU at Lakeview Jr. High from 4-8 this Friday to see if it’s for you. You won’t be disappointed!
