Finnegan Fox is a boy with high hopes and big dreams who isn’t going to let others stand in the way of what he wants to achieve in life.

Author James T. Lanier, a local resident and businessman for eighteen years, brought life to this courageous young character in his new book Finney’s First Flight.

Orcutt Pioneer: Tell us a little bit about your writing background.

James T. Lanier: I have always loved writing and have a lot of stories in my filing cabinet waiting to be finished. Whether it be stories, web content, or articles for the Orcutt Pioneer I enjoy any opportunity to fashion thoughts into script. Believe it or not I even enjoy writing emails.

OP: Describe Finney and how you came up with his story

JTL: “Finnegan Fox was a freckle-faced fellow…,“ begins the story about a young lad living in rural Scotland during the end of the 19th century. He has quite an imagination and knows how to put it to good use. The people in his village don’t share his enthusiasm so he becomes the centerpiece for gossip and ridicule, but with his focus and determination he doesn’t allow anyone to sway him from making his dream a reality. In the end we cheer for him

then look inside ourselves and say, “what is that one thing that I have wanted to do that I’m afraid others will mock? I’m gonna do it anyway!”

The idea for Finney’s First Flight just popped into my mind one night. The original story kept rapidly forming with most of the words beginning with the letter “f” thus the reason for the title and first line of the story as it is. Alas, the mind is quicker than the pen, and even quicker to forget so before I could get it scribbled down I had forgotten many of the “f” words. I know you’re probably thinking that’s a good thing—but, hey they were nice words. I stayed up till the wee hours of the mornin’ to work it all out. I continued working on it over several weeks to view it again each time from a little different perspective. Amber Rose Francis, my illustrator, and my editors had some great tweaks too.

OP: What was it like to write Finney's First Flight?

JTL: It was exciting. It’s the first story that screamed “this is a story that must get out there NOW!” I worked at creating a story that kept the readers and listeners on the edge of their seats and couldn’t wait to turn the next page to see how it all turns out. In the end I want every reader and listener to enthusiastically be encouraged to go out there and make their dreams come true. We live in a time when people young and older need hope, drive, and, in many situations, new direction for their lives. I intended for this book to help do just that for people of all ages.

OP: Tell us about Team Publishing.JTL: To be quite honest, Team Publishing

was inspired by the IRS. We, the people get a

better tax break by publishing material as a company rather than an individual and so Team Publishing was born. After all the hard work, money, time, and team effort it took to complete this project I thought “why not help others get published by streamlining this process and cutting their costs and some of their time and effort by passing on what I’ve learned and allowing them to access some of the same resources I have either used or created!”

OP: Who is Amber Rose Francis and how did she come to be your illustrator?

JTL: Amber grew up in SLO and spent part of her schooling days at Hancock College. When my daughter, Grace, was an art student, I approached her teacher, Mr. Hood, to ask for if he knew an illustratorl. He said, “Hands down, it has to be Amber [Rose] Francis.” After we met and I saw the initial sketches of Finney I was ecstatic. She not only illustrated exceptionally well in the ink and watercolor style I asked for, but I saw that she had caught the vision for the project. Her work turned the story into a masterpiece.

OP: What would you tell a child like Finney who has big dreams?

JTL: Channel/focus those dreams with enthusiasm and research. Write down your ideas. Go to websites like The Little Green

Money Machine that can inspire you with success stories and show you and your parents how to achieve your goals. I realize that not all inspiration is about earning a buck, but the same principles can be applied to any venture. Be sure that you exercise respect to those around you especially to those who may not share your vision. Finney had his father’s blessing on his project and Finney had learned how to properly use the tools in his father’s workshop. A flying bicycle is only an inspirational story prop—not a realistic idea due to the physics involved.

OP: What will you be working on next? JTL: A flying rhinoceros. Just kidding.

I started a story a couple of years before Finney’s First Flight that I see it’s time has come as well. It, also, involves a young boy, but a bit younger than Finney. He lives in a time period a few hundred years beforehand. It, also, is an inspirational story yet much more colorful, in pallet, than Finney’s First Flight.

One artery was 100% blocked. The other 97% blocked. The odds were against me.

I couldn’t breathe, I was disoriented and I knew immediately I was having a heart attack. My husband called 9-1-1 and within minutes the EMTs were at my home. In the ambulance, I clearly remember hearing, ‘Marian is waiting for you’. It took them just 32 minutes to open the blockages in my arteries; 32 minutes and I got a second chance.

5Orcutt Pioneer ~ Feb. 20, 2013Orcutt Schools Update

February 6 was a validating day for the Orcutt Academy.

In the morning, Orcutt Academy High School learned that it has been accredited for six years by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). In the evening, the Academy held its annual enrollment lottery, with a total of 449 students seeking admission to the K-8 and high school campuses.

Both these developments provide further evidence of the Academy’s success, five years following its founding.

The news from WASC culminated a two-year process during which Orcutt Academy High School staff and stake-holders conducted a self-study and then were visited by a WASC committee September 30-October 3. The school’s self-study included surveys of students, staff, and parents; a detailed analysis of data on student achievement, program participation, and school demographics; a statement of the school’s critical academic needs; and development of a school action plan for improvement.

WASC will make a one-day visit to the high school in 2016 to follow up on the school’s action plan.

“I think the six-year term just verifies what we are already doing,” says Jonathan Dollahite, an OAHS history teacher who chaired a focus group for the school’s self-study. “We know we’re doing a great job, but (the accreditation term) is an affirmation. Our staff and our students are feeling good about this.”

“I am very proud of this school, and it really means a lot when other people say good things about it,” says OAHS head custodian Antonio Lopez, who along with night custodian Jaime Alfaro had the campus looking spotless for the WASC visiting committee. “We have the best team of people here.”

The Academy’s enrollment lottery on February 6 also went well. A large crowd looked on as the random drawing filled 10 seats in grades K-8 and 159 seats in high school. With far more applicants than openings – there were 182 applicants for the K-8 campus and 267 applicants for OAHS – the lottery also determined the order of the wait list for each grade level.

“The interest in our school just keeps growing,” says OAHS administrative assistant Kim Domingues, who has been with the school since its inception. “Every time we start a lottery, I am blown away by how many people have applied.”

Meanwhile, I am sad to report that the Orcutt Union School District lost two dear friends this month with the passings of Ray Deutsch and

Norm Enoch.Deutsch, a longtime local architect, worked

closely with our district for more than two decades. Among other projects, Deutsch helped develop the district’s modernization program in 2000-2003; he advised the district on the installation of numerous modular buildings,

including most of the district’s libraries and fine arts rooms; and he designed the Lakeview Gym. In addition, Deutsch was a strong supporter of the Santa Barbara County Teachers Network, which recognizes teachers for creative teaching ideas.

“Ray was always coming up with good ideas,” remembers Scott Stearns, the district’s facilities and maintenance coordinator. “He was very easy to work with – just a good guy. He had a hand in how most of our campuses look today.”

For many years Enoch, a member of the local Masonic Lodge, organized the spelling bees the Masons put on for Santa Maria-area students. Enoch also got the Masons to donate books to

some of our school libraries.“Norm was a quiet, unassuming man who

was a staunch advocate of spelling and reading and literacy in our community,” says Ron Maderas, who had students participate in Enoch’s Masonic Spelling Bees while teaching at Joe Nightingale and May Grisham schools. “Norm always chose to be involved.”

Our district is much, much the better for having had allies like Ray Deutsch and Norm Enoch. Their contributions will be remembered always.
