2011 January

The Lake Country Republican Club Meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at the Texas

Tea Room in Dogwood Plaza in Quitman Texas at 6 PM for dinner. Meetings start at 6:30

Dear Lake Country Republicans,

I hope each and every one of you have en-

joyed a very Merry Christmas with family

and friends and may we all look forward to,

and pray for, a better New Year.

It is at this special time of year that we

must remember the continuing sacrifices

our soldiers have and are continuing to

make for our country. It is those sacrifices so very many before

us have made that should give us all a moment of pause when en-

joying this Christmas season. It is those sacrifices and the free-

doms they secured which should never be forgotten. It is those

very freedoms that we as Americans are still fighting for even to-

day, both at home and abroad. As Americans we must never let

our guard down. We must never relent in our zeal to protect

our country and our God given Constitution. For it is through

God that these United States have come to be a light upon this

world, a beacon of hope and freedom. And it is through Him that

we must return our country to its former greatness.

I hope that we, as a club, may become a tool with which to edu-

cate and inspire our fellow Americans into new involvement, edu-

cation and action. As our founding fathers pledged their Lives,

Fortunes and Sacred Honor, we too have a responsibility to en-

sure that this country shall not perish from this earth.

Respectfully,

Greg Bowen

Minutes of the November 16, LCRC Meeting:

The Lake Country Republican Club met at the Texas Tea Room, Quitman,

TX, on November 16, 2010. Our president, Terrell AronSpeer, called the

meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. Our chaplain, Joyce Spencer, led the invo-

cation prayer. Elected officials present were constables Steve Bowser

and Ed Shadbolt, and Republican County Chairman, Helen Heavey.

Our speaker, David Simpson, newly elected Texas house representative

from district 7, northern Smith County and Gregg County, was

introduced by Dr. Marvel. He started his race two months later than oth-

ers. Winning his race, he told that the credit belongs to God and it was

by His grace. His passion is to restore civil government. Civil govern-

ment's primary purpose is to protect life, liberty, and property and keep

us from harming one another. He said we want to return to self govern-

ment. The problem now is electing a speaker of the House who is more

conservative than Joe Strauss, the present speaker. We have to stay in

front and hold the congressmen accountable.

Terrell told of the earmarks that Congress does.

Helen Heavey, Republican chairman, announced that headquarters was

closed now but would reopen after the 1st of January and be open one

day a week. If anyone has signs, bring them to headquarters but take

the stakes out and place them separately.

Terrell told about a show on the History channel on the bombing of

Germany in World War II.

Eugene Spencer's moment in history was about the founding of the

ACLU by Roger Baldwin. The American Civil Liberties Union is against

Christianity and receives most of it's money from liberals. Liberals ap-

point liberals to the courts. The media takes the part of the ACLU.

The new board of officers was introduced,

President - Greg Bowen

Vice-President - Dr. James Marvel

Secretary - Lynn AronSpeer

Treasurer - Gene Shoemaker.

Janice Logan volunteered for Hospitality.

Greg Bowen, our new President, spoke of future plans for the club.

Our meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm. after a motion and second passed.

Submitted by Janice Logan, Secretary

COMMENT: An article that I am told was in the Tuesday edition of the Tyler paper appar-

ently criticizes Rep. Bryan Hughes for voting “Present” on Monday’s vote for Texas Speaker of the House. Many of us anticipated a vote for Paxton, however he was not on the ballot. With the exception of Straus, no one was. Bryan’s vote may have lacked nuance, he could have voted “No” but I ask, to what good effect. There was no choice for Speaker, only a choice as to whether to parade an upset.

Bryan said he would not vote for Straus for speaker and he did not. I for one am satisfied. ~ ed.

The Sentinel

I assure you this is unlike any editorial I will write for future issues of the Sentinel. Many wonderful things

came together to make the “Sentinel” possible. This is not my first newsletter. I also edit “Wood Works,” the Master

Gardener newsletter for Wood County. I did not want to do it but my honey made me, saying that nothing ever is wasted and that the skills developed would be useful later. Score one for Lynn.

The next wonderful thing that happened was the name. I sat down to

make a list of names to pare down. First I asked my honey if she had any ideas. She said “The Sentinel.” I was immediately taken with the perfect ap-propriateness of this name. A sentinel is a guardian. A sentinel assumes re-sponsibility for something valuable. We are the keeper of Republican ideals, the Founders’ ideals. It is our responsibility to keep and pass on these values to a new generation. My list was complete. Score one for Lynn again. I know that’s two.

The next wonderful thing that happened, as I was building the masthead

(the banner at the top of the publication) and collecting meaningful images, FOX News was doing a story on the assault on Christmas. Apparently an im-age of a snowflake is now code for Jesus and must not be allowed in public schools. I wanted in some subtle way to take a stand for Christian values in the imagery on the front page. So paralleling the table of contents and going upwards I added a thin gold line. Then just below the masthead I added an-other thin gold line perpendicular to the other gold line making a subtle cross. I sent the design along with an explanation of what I was trying to accomplish to our new President, Greg Bowen, for approval. Greg responded with the in-struction, “Be bold.” This instruction was liberating. I appreciate this man-agement style as it is the same style I employed when I was in corporate. Give general direction, not specific instruction—this brings out the best in people. The cross now stands prominently and proudly on the front page. It extends from the masthead, with its images of a strong America rooted in founding documents, down into the body of the newsletter. May it be forever blessed.

Each month I will write an editorial for the Sentinel. I promise you

thoughtful subjects with substance, occasional humor and a presentation which will appeal to your intellect—no rants. In return I ask for your honest well thought out comments. We will have a letter to the editor section. Intro-duce a new topic, correct me where you think I went wrong, or you could even agree with me. I will print the best comments and whole letters when well written with well constructed arguments. Be pithy. The Sentinel is your

newsletter; participate, share and enjoy. ~ ed.

A little Respect Please

Before the first ambulance on the scene had left the Safeway parking lot, the left wing spin machine was cranking out venom. To listen to lefty

pundits, you would believe Sara Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity each had their finger on the trigger.

We all decry the shooting of congressional representative Gabrielle Gif-

fords. The life of a nine-year-old girl was lost. A federal judge, a reverend, a treasured wife of 56 years, a congressional aid and others died and 14 others suffered injuries of varying severity. The senselessness of this trag-

edy was highlighted by the fact that the murderous vermin who shot these good people is apparently criminally insane. The families of the fallen and

the survivors must now deal with their new realities.

What sort of person would make political hay and a media circus of such a tragic situation? Starting with Democrat Pima County Sheriff Cla-rence Dupnik1, apparently just about everybody on the left. Being on the

left apparently means never having to be consistent. The constant venom and vitriol from the left is never condemned.

When Congressman Allen Grayson, on the floor of the House, stated

that Republicans wanted old people to die there was no comment. When the President said, “When the Republicans bring a knife we will bring a gun,” there was no outcry from the press.

When President Reagan was shot by a similarly crazed individual, did anyone blame the press which was full of vitriolic tirades against

the President? Did anyone think to blame irresponsible Hollywood film makers or actress Jodi Foster? Of course not!

Did anyone find fault with a Hollywood which produced a film of the assassination of George W. Bush while he was serving as President.

Conservative speakers on college campuses are routinely shouted down, assaulted and run off along with their body guards. Speakers on the left do not fear similar reprisals by the college Young

Republican Club because they know Republicans are, by their na-ture, civilized and respectful even when disagreeing.

The right is rightly outraged. Right wing pundits are constantly accused

of “hate speech,” but examples are rare. Sara Palin had in an ad, targets

on some congressional districts where she wanted to elect a Republican to

1 Apparently Sheriff Dupnik lives In a glass house. The Sheriff’s department was called out to the assassin’s

home on more than one occasion. Sara Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity had no power to hold the

suspect over for psychiatric evaluation before the crime was committed, but it seems the Sheriff did.

Page 6: Lake Country Republican Club January 2011 ~ S e n t I n e lThe Lake Country Republican Club met at the Texas Tea Room, Quitman, TX, on November 16, 2010. Our president, Terrell AronSpeer,

replace the Democratic representative. Largely, she was successful. De-

mocrats ran similar ads. The worst example was given by a Democratic supporter who attended Gabrielle Giffords’ early morning event and actu-

ally participated in the capture of Jared Loughner, the deranged shooter in this incident. In an interview with Shepherd Smith of FNC, she said she “blamed right wing hate speech.” Shep asked for an example and she cited

that Republicans referred to “Obama-care” as a “job killing bill.” Even the somewhat left-leaning Shepherd Smith was so dumbfounded that there was a moment of dead air. The hypersensitivity of these people deserves no

consideration. It is just ginned up to stifle dissenting opinions.

No one even considered that the government might be complicit. Could a federal government, which refuses to enforce immigration laws and sues

a state which does, create a situation so dangerous to the citizen that he is driven to a homicidal outburst? The city just to Tucson’s north, Phoenix, is second only to Mexico City in the annual number of kidnappings. Drugs,

murders and gang violence are rampant and the federal government sues the state of Arizona for passing laws to enforce federal statutes designed to

protect her citizens. The congress woman herself may be complicit in that in spite of the fact that she has received numerous threats, she did not think to provide any security at the event. One would think a phone call to

the police or sheriff’s office would have been in order.

But do not hold your breath waiting for the left to apologize for their outrageous behavior. And do not waste any time waiting for your neighbor

to share in your outrage. The bar for the left has been set so low that a snake has to jump over it. No one is surprised that this crew cannot figure out what the meaning of is is. The reason Republicans are drummed from

office when the least indiscretion is brought to light, is that Republicans run on standards. Voters hold them to these standards. The reason that

similar indiscretions do not affect Democrats is that they have no stan-dards. People do not expect Democrats to behave and neither should you.

Other Presidents would have called for a moment of prayer. Our Presi-dent, perhaps more in keeping with his own faith or just taking advice from

Thumper’s mother, held a national moment of silence. However you feel about this, the image of President Obama standing in front of all those

cameras and microphones, yet saying nothing was news-worthy and unlikely to be repeated in our lifetimes.

Look for increased assaults on your First and Second Amendment

rights. In case you hadn’t figured it out, look to your left. ~ ed

Page 7: Lake Country Republican Club January 2011 ~ S e n t I n e lThe Lake Country Republican Club met at the Texas Tea Room, Quitman, TX, on November 16, 2010. Our president, Terrell AronSpeer,

A lot has been said and reported about what's been going on in Korea and many of you have asked me my opinions on what I think, why is this happening, and where do we go from here. Maybe if I jot down a few thoughts on this, since I've been working the "issues" on this subject for the last couple years and most recently, very intimately involved, it might give you a decent grasp on the conflict, so here's my best attempt.

Just this past week North Korea warned South Korea against holding more live fire exer-cises near a disputed western sea border, accusing SK for enticing a full blown war. With the recent appointment of a new Defense Minister, the rhetoric over the past couple weeks has ignited greater tension on the Korean peninsula. Defense Minister Jin has warned that “jets would bomb the North” if it stages another attack against the South, as it recently did. SK will not cease in conducting drills, Joint drills, with the US. This is a constant that will continue for as long as we are allies with the ROK. When the Armistice was signed in 1953, there were lands and maritime borders that were put into place. The so called Northern Limit Line (NLL) was created both on land and sea. The South said the drills that they conduct were within their maritime NLL on the Yellow Sea. The North disputes it…classic –“he said, she said.” Tensions today are at their highest point in decades, and coupled with the North’s threats of Nuclear Holocaust and its every day intimidation of the South, it appears that an all out War between the nations is inevitable, unless we change our policy in dealing with this bully and Kim Jong Il (KJI). NK’s policy towards the South is based purely on antagonizing its Southern neighbor. The people of the ROK are resilient and strong people, but they understand that the fear of living within artillery range of NK, is a real fear. A likely war would include several participants, not only the US. The US is the most obvi-ous outside participant, per our Mutual Defense Treaty of 1953. We currently have over 28,000 of mostly ground troops in the ROK, although any engaged conflict would rely heavily on air and naval forces. NATO and the United Nations Command (UNC) would come into play under certain circumstances. Now, the part that gets tricky, is that a full scale attack against the South, wouldn’t automatically result in NATO’s commitment in the defense of the ROK. There are many other intangibles and rules, International agree-ments, etc..that need to be dissected, but for the sake of this discussion and keeping it fo-cused on a Macro approach, I’ll hold off on the analysis for now.

Following is a guest article by Marine Lt. Colonel Eric Duggan on the current situation in

Korea. Lt. Colonel Duggan is Greg Bowen’s nephew and has been stationed in Korea and

is soon to return. LT. Colonel Duggan has a military habit of reducing repetitive informa-

tion to a series of initials. SK and ROK is often substituted for South Korea or the Re-public of South Korea. North Korea is predictably referred to as NK. Its demented leader,

Kim Jong Il is Referred to as KJI. The Lt. Colonel does a good job of introducing subjects

he abbreviates with the possible exception of GC/BC for “good cop/bad cop.” I hope you

find the article as informative and enlightening as I did. The following article is presented

without editing on our part. ~ ed

Page 8: Lake Country Republican Club January 2011 ~ S e n t I n e lThe Lake Country Republican Club met at the Texas Tea Room, Quitman, TX, on November 16, 2010. Our president, Terrell AronSpeer,

Continued . . .

What we know: On November 20th, we became privy of another Nuclear Plant the North was using to en-rich uranium. A few days later, NK launched its artillery attack on the disputed NLL, spe-cifically the Yeonpyeong Island, killing civilians and a few ROK Marines. We don’t quite understand the North's reasoning on firing on the island, but we can guess it could be many factors, which include but are not limited to: US/ROK military exercises near the NLL (as we discussed earlier the NLL which only the South recognizes which was drawn up by the UN after the armistice was signed, but it’s important to know that maritime bor-ders were NOT specially discusses, which has resulted in the ambiguity of the current cease fire put in place. This leads me to my next point: The Korean War has not officially ended. We have only an ARMISTICE put in place, a cease fire of aggressions, and a DMZ, demilitarized zone, which has resulted in the physical posturing and 24/7, 365 day a year “stare down” (literally) of NK and ROK soldiers. 10 Years ago, NK officially de-recognized the NLL and unilaterally recognized its own ver-sion of a “Maritime Military Demarcation Line.” Since then the peninsula has been involved in several skirmishes, and unless the problem (KJI’s regime) is really addressed, the con-flict will continue to escalate, until there is no way out, and no turning back. NK is a bullying nation. KJI is like a pestering child that can never get his parents' atten-tion. He lashes out, cries wolf, and stirs the pot whenever he feels that the attention is no longer on him and his, now, likely successor his youngest son Kim Jon Un. KJI has too much to lose, in my opinion, to force the hand of the ROK in pre-emptive War. He enjoys his Johnny Walker Scotch, his Soprano’s and Godfather movies, his strippers, his internet, his pornography, and his Dish Network. On the flip side, his people are kept in "information bondage" and are suffering. He has too much to lose. The tell all will be this – does he want his son to continue in this posture, or once he realizes his mortality due to his poor health, that he won’t think twice of striking to produce War? No one really knows the an-swer to this.

What about China, what role do they play? They could potentially be the key to

Peace or War

China doesn't want to see a unified Korean Peninsula, because NK is the buffer between them and the Free World. They last thing the Chinese government wants to see massed on their borders are ROK/US troops. Additionally, China views themselves as the Good Cop in the GC/BC scenario. The Democratic nations of the world will continue to turn to China to put pressure on its close, but "not so close" ally - NK. China has an economy only 2nd in global strength to the USA.....for now, that is. They will posture in a passive/aggressive nature indefinitely, not condemning NK, but not supporting their aggressive and hostile actions. They're positioning themselves strategically, in an effort to be in good standing with the world and global economy, if and when they take the lead as a unilateral economic superpower. Bottom line: they cannot afford to isolate themselves by support-ing NK, and it's dictatorship, but they will not condemn its actions --classic SUN TZU "keeping their friends close, but their enemies closer."

Page 9: Lake Country Republican Club January 2011 ~ S e n t I n e lThe Lake Country Republican Club met at the Texas Tea Room, Quitman, TX, on November 16, 2010. Our president, Terrell AronSpeer,

Continued . . .

The burden now lies on China’s shoulders. The intensity of China’s involvement in nonpro-liferation endeavors depends on several factors. The first consideration is the objective of the Chinese government. China has made enormous economic progress, and it may want to continue to foster its economic interests, more so than security concerns. For instance, the Chinese government may want to concentrate on growing its trade relations, inviting foreign investments, encouraging consumer markets and increasing its produc-tion capacities (You might ask yourself like I did, how the heck can they improve capacity even further??:). Furthermore, other domestic concerns may be of more importance than international interests. Secondly, other countries’ political recognition of China’s engage-ments also may direct its level of involvement. In particular, how the US perceives and promotes the role of China will influence China’s actions. Third and finally, how China per-ceives the truthfulness of its attempts will affect the intensity of its engagements. If China realizes the fruits of its efforts, it will be encouraged to act further. This is also related to North Korea’s receptiveness and its perception of its relations with China. All of these fac-tors will shape China’s course of action but ultimately, the decision lies with the Chinese leaders who will weigh the costs and benefits of maintaining or challenging the status quo. How influential their decisions will be to the regional stability and peace have yet to be de-termined. So, there you have it...I hope this helps...

ments to vote, including presenting proof of identification.” I read this bill and I think it is an excellent

bill that will go a long way to make our elections more secure. I invite you to read the bill on Texas Leg-

islature Online. http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/

Please check that you are looking at the 82nd Session for 2011 and not the 81st Session in 2009.

If you have trouble with this web site please call me at 713-870-5834 and I will help you. Alternatively,

you might want to plan to attend Amy Clark’s workshop on Legislative Day, March 3, 2011 when she

will give a great presentation on navigating the Texas Legislature Online.

Redistricting

A great deal of information about the redistricting process, state and federal laws governing re-

districting and statistical information is available at the Texas Senate Select Committee on Redistricting

website at http://www.tlc.state.tx.us/redist/redist.html This is definitely an issue to watch.

Texas Water Issues

I am writing this article because I want every member of TFRW to be aware of possible legisla-

tion in the 2011 Legislative session concerning our most important recourse, our water.

The Texas Water Code clarifies that groundwater is considered a private property right. The

state owns all the surface water that is navigable. The Texas Water Code prevents geographic areas from

protecting groundwater because they are not allowed to prevent exporting of water outside the district.

The rural areas want their water preserved for future use, whether it is for agriculture, industry or other

economic development. Rural citizens feel they should not have to give up their water simply because

economic development is faster in urban areas. People in growing urban areas want to be able to use the

groundwater from outside their areas for obvious reason.

The issue will boil down to whether rural areas can keep their private property (their groundwa-

ter) in their districts. Since water is our most important resource, this is a very important topic.

Occasionally we have an opportunity to do a good deed which affects numerous disparate people and organizations. Today I write to you about such an opportunity. Potts Feed Store is sponsoring a Hog Hunt to benefit the FFA alumni. This was revealed in an article in the Wood County Democrat (see article lower left). Upon noticing this my favorite Republican, Lynn AronSpeer contacted Tiger Springs, a “Big Cat” rescue organization located right here in East Texas to see if there might be a way that they too could benefit. They care for nu-merous beautiful animals from various troubled backgrounds and you can imagine what it must be like just keeping them in food. Lynn asked that they send us pictures of some of their rescues who’s pictures are found on this page.

These unusual neighbors can be seen at the Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge which is located

due east of Lindale on FM 14 just south of FM 16. Visit http://www.tigercreek.org/

Visiting hours are from 10A to 5P weather permitting. They are closed Sundays and Holidays. Admission for adults is $10, children $8 and seniors $9. There are specific programs for young children. What we ask is that you come to Potts Feed Store Sunday Janu-ary 30 to support your favorite hunters. The FFA Alumni have invited Terri Werner, Director of Operations for Tiger Creek, to be at Potts Feed Store to greet the hunters at the weigh-in and ac-cept any donations of hogs for the big cats.
