HOME LEARNING SURVEY We are currently reviewing our Home Learning Policy and have designed three surveys targeting staff, students and parents to provide feedback in regards to current and preferred home learning procedures. Home learning is a controversial issue in most schools. We are trying to develop a Home Learning Policy that best addresses student holistic learning and development needs. The school would be appreciative of securing your honest and open opinions through this survey. The survey will be attached to the Week 9 Newsletter. Inclusion of your name is optional. Please return your survey to the school office by Friday September 22.

Western Region Athletics Last Friday we travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Western Region Athletics. 19 kids from our school went. The girls started at the track events with the boys starting on field events. Then we swapped after lunch. I went into high jump with about 20 other girls. We started off at 1.1m and then we went up by 5cm. I cleared 1.26m for my last jump and finished 2nd overall.

The junior boys relay came 3rd overall with Darneil Thomas, Aden Beetson, Ryder Smith and Lachlan Richardson making up the team. The 5 of us are all heading off to State in Sydney on the 18th of October. Hydi Gleeson

STEM AT LAKE BURRENDONG

Well done to Latrell Dutton, Darneil Thomas and Blake Dwyer who attended a camp for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) at Lake Burrendong last week. The camp was organised by the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and was attended by Aboriginal students from across regional and metropolitan NSW. The boys had a great week interacting and learning about maths, 4-dimensional toys, chemistry, design, engineering and technology. They also participated in a trip to the Parkes radio telescope, as well as a number of cultural and social activities. The boys were enthusiastic and engaged, and they did themselves and the school proud.

Premier Spelling Bee

On Monday I went to the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Final with my brother Ryan and my friends, Taiha and Abbey. When we got to Griffith East Public School Ryan and Abbey had to start straight away. They were both very nervous because it was their first time at a Spelling Bee Competition. Although she tried her best, Abbey was so nervous she found it hard to think straight and she got out in the first round.

Ryan made it all the way to round 4 before he got out. One hour later it was Taiha and my turn. We were both really nervous, me especially, I ended up getting out in round 2. Taiha did really well and made it to round 4. Overall we did really well and it was a fun day. Thanks to our Mums for driving us to Griffith and to Mrs Newham for nominating us to represent LCCS. By Lachlan. Edited by Ryan and Abbey.

Recorder Group On Monday we travelled to Sydney with our parents to the Sydney Opera House to play the recorder. There were 6 of us girls: Iliada Bramich, Azaya Norris, Anastasia Bramich, Olivia Ervin, Carly Hooper and myself. Miss Freeman helped us get there and played with us at the Opera House. There were lots of other schools and other instruments like violins, xylophones, saxophones and guitars. The highlight was getting to go inside the Opera House and play in front of thousands of people. I would recommend others to have a go next year! Zarlia Norris

Show Team News On Saturday, Eliza, Nat and Justina, along with Meg when she wasn’t riding her horse, exhibited Merino Ewes on behalf of Alan and Jenny Ireland at the Lake Cargelligo Show. The students had a great day and the Judge explained features of why he was selecting different animals. The girls then went to participate in the cattle Judging. Meg, Eliza and Nat all got the same order as the judge and were selected to speak. Nat and Eliza spoke directly to the judge and Meg had to speak on the microphone. Nat received a second place in the Novice section and Meg received a second place in the Intermediate section.

This was a great achievement for the girls as it is the first time they have achieved maximum points doing junior judging. Our next show will be Beef Bonanza next term where will be exhibiting our 3 steers. Students will be busy over the next few weeks preparing.

Agriculture News

The students have been extremely busy at the Ag Plot lately. Students in 9/10 Ag, hatched 5 Australorp chickens in the incubator and are weighing them to monitor their growth rates. Students tagged the chickens and named them today.

Students in Year 7, helped Miss Ireland to wean the older lambs by drafting off the ewes. Year 11 Primary Industries then gave these lambs a booster vaccination and marked the y7 younger lambs. These students have also started to prepare the pumpkin patch for Year 9/10 to sow their pumpkins and watermelons next term.
