ld-fashioned rural character lives inharmony with progress and growth in LaGrange County. In fact, “La-

Grange” is French for “The Farm,” a placewhere old and new ideas tend to meet. Lo-cated in northeastern Indiana, LaGrangeCounty is home to the third largest Amishcommunity in the United States. Approxi-mately 43 percent of the county’s popula-tion is Amish.

Residents and visitors enjoy the idyllicfarmland, 67 lakes and tree-shaded neighborhoods scattered throughout thecounty. The county is made up of 11 smalltowns and unincorporated villages withpopulations ranging from 525 to 3,000citizens. LaGrange, located in the heart of thecounty, is the county seat. It is also hometo some of the county’s architectural jewels including the county courthouse,completed in 1879, and the city’sCarnegie Library, built in 1919, which re-cently underwent a 4 million dollar re-model. Shipshewana, located in the westernhalf of the county, is home to the Ship-shewana Flea Market and Auction, whichattracts visitors from all over during thesummer months as do numerous specialtyand craft shops throughout the year.

Topeka, just a few miles south of Ship-shewana, is known around the world forits Draft horse auctions. The town also boasts a growing industrial base whilebeing home to many of the Amish tradi-tions.

Wolcottville, along the southern border of the county, offers a central business and shopping district for year-round and summer residents living on the nearby lakes.

Howe, just to the north, is surroundedby lakes and forest preserves. This unin-corporated village is also home to HoweMilitary Academy, which opened in 1884.

The other unincorporated towns ofOntario, Brighton, Mongo, Stroh, andSouth Milford, offer peaceful roads, parksand vistas, which are enjoyed by residentsand visitors alike.

Once home to the Potawatomi Indians, LaGrange County saw its first whitesettlers in the early 1830s, as folks came from the east to establish commu-nities in this Midwestern wilderness. It has continued to grow ever since,

attracting modern-day pioneers with its beautifully preserved landscape and nat-ural areas. Shipshewana, named for Potawatomi chief, Shipshewana, is said to have wel-comed the first white settler in 1831. The first recorded land certificate was is-sued in 1835 and by 1844 a group of Amish settlers from Pennsylvania calledthis area home. By 1854, German Baptist and Mennonite churches were built.Shipshewana was first platted in 1889 and officially incorporated in 1916.

In 1832, two French traders arrived in Wolcottville and soon a log cabin, adam and sawmill, a general store and gristmill were built, making Wolcottvilleone of the area’s first settlements. George Wolcott, who arrived in 1837, was re-sponsible for starting a number of the businesses that served settlers’ needs; thetown was named after him in 1848. First settled in 1832, Topeka was officially named in 1893. Previously calledHaw Patch and Slabtown, Topeka is said to have been named by Kansas railroadworkers who constructed the tracks for the Wabash Railroad in 1891. SycamoreHall, home to the Sycamore Literary Society, was built in Topeka and dedicatedin 1905. Plans for LaGrange, platted in 1836 by Rueben J. Dawson, William F. Beavers,George F. Whittaker, and James McConnell, included a public square, which isnow home to the LaGrange County Seat. Due to LaGrange’s central location, thecounty seat was moved from Lima (now Howe) to the city of LaGrange in 1843. Howe, the former county seat, was settled in 1834 and became the first for-malized white settlement in the county. First called Mongo-quinong, the townlater was called Lima and then changed to Howe, after John B. Howe, one of thefounders of the community’s first bank. Howe’s mansion is located on WestUnion Street and is used as the rectory and administration building for HoweMilitary Academy. Remnants of the area’s old historic past remain. Brighton is home to the 150-year-old English Prairie Church of the Brethren and remains one of the area’sfirst one-room schoolhouses. Mongo boasts The Old Store, a Greek revival stylebuilding, which continues to stand today.

Originally settled as farming villages, Mongo, Stroh and South Milford re-main active as residents and visitors take advantage of the lakes and rivers sur-rounding the communities.

Schools in LaGrange County offer small teacher-to-student ratios inthe classrooms as well as curriculum to prepare students for theirpost-high school years.

From elementary school to high school, regardless if a student is tak-ing college prep or vocational training courses, each student receives awell-rounded education in the classroom and from extra-curricular ac-tivities. There are three public school corporations in the county. WestviewSchool Corporation, located in Emma, oversees three elementaryschools. Elementary students in Shipshewana attend Shipshewana-ScottElementary School. Children in Topeka attend Topeka ElementarySchool. Students located between Topeka and Shipshewana attendMeadowview Elementary. All three elementary school graduates moveon to Westview Elementary School for fifth and sixth grade, after whichthey attend Westview Junior/Senior High School. Lakeland School Corporation, based in LaGrange, consists of three el-ementary schools, Parkside, Wolcott-Mills and Lima-Brighton. Childrenthen move to Lakeland Middle School followed by Lakeland HighSchool, Lakeland’s “Leading EDGE” new Tech High School. The eastern third of the county is served by Prairie Heights SchoolCorporation. Of special note is Milford Elementary School, with its out-door classroom at Pretty Lake. The main complex includes PrairieHeights Elementary, Middle School and High School. Prairie Heights of-fers an outstanding Vocational Agriculture and Building Trades curricu-lum.

Students may also attend Howe Military Academy, a boarding schoolserving youth in 5th-12th grades. The school is co-ed, based on collegeprep courses and uses JROTC guidelines ensuring a rigorous curriculumand strong school community. Students at Howe play sports and partici-pate in other school activities while working their way through theranks of Cadet Corps. Part of the Episcopal Diocese, students at Howe at-tend chapel four evenings a week in addition to a full Sunday service.Howe Military Academy also boasts a 97 percent college acceptance rate.

Higher education is just a short drive away. The University of NotreDame, Trine University, University of St. Francis, regional campuses ofIndiana and Purdue Universities, a regional campus of Indiana Wes-leyan University, a regional campus of Taylor University, Ivy Tech StateCollege, Glen Oaks Community College, Goshen College and the Free-dom Academy are all within an hour’s drive from LaGrange County.

Amish children typically attend Amish run schools in their area or at-tend public schools until eighth-grade. Some Amish students continuethrough high school depending on the direction of the local deacon orbishop. The LaGrange County Library, currently under a major expansionprogram, serves more than 30,000 patrons. In addition to its main build-ing, a Carnegie Library located in downtown LaGrange, the library hasbranches in Topeka and Shipshewana. Knowledgeable staff offers programs for both adults and children

that provide assistance with research projects as well as keep the shelvesstocked with up-to-date materials. The library bookmobile serves rural patrons as well as those who livein town, making books and materials available to all county residents.

aGrange County’s government consists of three county commis-sioners and a county council made up of seven elected members.The county commissioners meet twice a month to address county

business. The council meets once a month. Shipshewana is governed by a five-member town council, which

meets twice a month in public meetings. A town manager handles theday-to-day business of the town. A town marshal oversees law enforce-ment. There is also a volunteer fire department and water and sewer

department. Topeka has a three-member council, which meets twice a month, and atown manager. Other government services include a police department com-prised of a town marshal, a full-time deputy and three reserve officers. Thetown also has a water and sewer department, garbage pick-up, volunteer firedepartment with a full-time paramedic and six volunteer EMS medics. LaGrange has a five-member town council. Government services includewater and sewer department, a volunteer fire department and a police forcemade up of four full-time officers and several reserve officers. Wolcottville has a three-member town council, which meets once amonth. Government services include water and sewer, a town marshal andvolunteer fire department. The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department serves the unincorporatedareas of the county. Many of the unincorporated villages offer volunteer fireservices.

Town Park in LaGrange offers a playground, softball diamond,skateboarding, basketball and tennis courts. In Shipshewana, kidsare kept busy at Wolfe Park with modern playground equipment,including a large wooden train and a couple of basketball courts.Topeka offers three parks, East Park, West Park and Little LeaguePark, which offer everything from picnic pavilions and play-grounds to hiking paths and ponds. The third weekend of March, see maplesyrup made by touring the 500-tap working sugar camp. There isalso a pancake meal served all day.• David Rogers Park includes a historic village with restored 19thcentury log houses. It is also the gravesite and memorial to pio-neer philanthropist, Dr. David Rogers. The park hosts the annualDavid Rogers Days Pioneer Living History Festival which takesplace on the fourth weekend in August.• Pine Knob Park offers 99 acres of oaks, pines and soft maples,high quality marsh and Meteer Lake. Many outdoor recreationalactivities including a 3-D archery trail with life-sized game tar-gets, trails and fishing dock. Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area was established in 1956when three impoundments in the Pigeon River Valley were ac-quired by the State of Indiana. These included Mongo, Nasby

and Ontario reservoirs. Since then the state has acquired additionalland along the river valley. Currently the property covers over12,600 acres. Most revenue used in land acquisition, development, operationand maintenance of Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area is derivedfrom the sale of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses. Funds arealso received from the federal Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-John-son programs to aid fish and wildlife restoration. These funds arederived from taxes levied on sport hunting and fishing equipment.Indiana hunters and fishermen are proud to provide this propertyfor the enjoyment of all people. Although hunting, fishing, shooting and trapping are the pri-mary use for the Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area, camping,wildlife watching, nature study, nut, berry and mushroom pickingare some of the secondary uses of the property available to all.

Hunting• Hunting for furbearers, deer, quail, rabbit, squirrel, waterfowl,dove, pheasant and wild turkey is common at Pigeon River Fish &Wildlife Area.• Daily check-in is required. All hunting seasons and bag limitsapply. • Special hunts include youth waterfowl, daily waterfowl drawings,drawings for turkey hunting and put-and-take pheasant hunts.• Hunting areas available for disabled.• Area D is designated for dog training.• Wetland trapping available. Camping• Offering 44 primitive camp sites, camping is open all year on afirst come, first serve basis. The maximum stay is 14 days.• Water and pit toilets are available.• No swimming allowed.

Target Ranges• Target ranges are open to the public on a first come, first servebasis. All shooters must obey range rules and regulations.• Range is open April - Aug., 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sept. - March, 8a.m. to 5 p.m., except during waterfowl season, when range hoursare restricted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.• The range is closed on Mondays.

Traffic• Traffic on public roads through the area is governed by state andcounty laws. Traffic over service roads and trails, except by authorized vehicles, is restricted to walking. Parking allowed in des-ignated parking lots only.

Wildlife Watching • Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area provides excellent waterfowlwatching.

here’s always something happening in LaGrange County. Fes-tivals and special events are held throughout the year. In thespring there’s the Maple Syrup Festival at Maple Wood Nature

Center and the Shipshewana Mayfest, a family celebration withfood, parades and music. During the summer months, there are free concerts in Howe’sTown Park, Topeka’s parks and the LaGrange Courthouse gazebo.4th of July Festivals are held in Topeka, LaGrange, Stroh and Wol-cottville. May-August bring the Shipshewana Antique Markets. Memo-rial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day are extended fleamarket days. The LaGrange County 4-H Fair, held at the LaGrange CountyFairgrounds, packs in 4-H’ers and visitors during the first part ofJuly. During the month of August you will find the Gas and SteamEngine Show as well as the Annual Habitat for Humanity Auction. In October, LaGrange hosts Corn School, featuring a five-daystreet fair, parades and family fun. During November and December, towns throughout thecounty welcome the holidays with a variety of open houses,Santa’s arrival and live Nativities. Quilt shows, craft fairs, churchsuppers, pancake breakfasts and other events sponsored by localchurch groups and civic organizations round out the year.

There’s more to do in LaGrange County. The Shipshewana FleaMarket, antique shopping and Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Pre-serve provide tourists with a wide array of shopping and recre-ation. The numerous lakes offer some of the best fishing in thestate. The LaGrange County Visitors Bureau offers Geo-Cachingwhich is a year-round activity that is fun for the whole family! Ahigh-tech treasure hunt that uses a handheld GPS (Global Posi-tioning System) to help you find caches containing unique items.The Barn Quilt Tour is another way to see treasures in our county.

Greenfield Mills, which has been in business since 1846, allowsvisitors to witness grains being milled into flour the old-fashionedway. Tours of the mill, gift shop and The Old Store are available. Wolcottville is where the buffalo still roam. See for yourself atCook’s Bison Ranch as they bring back an American tradition.Take the tour, visit their gift shop and enjoy buffalo products. Those who’d like to take a relaxed tour of the countryside maywant to explore by horse and buggy. Amish tour companies intro-duce visitors to how today’s Amish live, with tours of IndianaAmish country, some including dinners in Amish homes. Tours bycarriage are also available to take folks on relaxing rides downnearby rural roads.
