The Goshen Chamber of Commerce is composed of leading business personsand professionals from almost 530 Goshen area businesses. These people areearnestly engaged in promoting activities that enhance the civic, commercialand industrial welfare of the City of Goshen and Elkhart County. The Goshen Chamber of Commerce will continue its efforts to marketGoshen with our partners from the City of Goshen, Goshen CommunitySchools, and Goshen College. The Good of Goshen campaign is promotingGoshen as a great place to live, work, start a business and have your children educated from kindergarten through college. One of the major areas we will be looking to implement the new brand is at theentry ways into our community.

With the support of forty chamber members and organizations, the Chamber opened LaunchPad Goshen in 2013. LaunchPadprovides over three-thousand square feet of finished space for business ideas to grow and launch new business enterprises inour community. In addition to space, start-up businesses have access to business counseling services and mentors.

The Chamber Board of Directors have also targeted four other areas for concentration: (1) Work to grow our economic basethrough our Greater Goshen Association, our partnership with the City of Goshen and the Economic DevelopmentCorporation of Elkhart County; (2) Work with our local elected officials and their staff at all levels of government to ensurethat legislation and regulations promote economic vitality for Goshen area businesses; (3) Work with our schools to identifyways the business community can assist the district in reaching their goals and meeting the needs of our students; and (4)Work with our existing members to make sure they are taking full advantage of their membership and invite non-members totake advantage of Chamber membership.

The Goshen Chamber was founded 60 years ago by communitybusiness leaders in an effort to strengthen and build an environ-ment where businesses could grow and prosper. As residents inthe community, they also realized that the community had tooffer a good quality of life.

Today, the Goshen Chamber has almost 530 members. Thesebusiness leaders maintain a firm commitment to the principles ofthe founders.

No place better reflects this commitment than the Chamber’smission statement, which reads, “The mission of the Goshen Chamber isto champion our community’s business future.” The organization goes onto identify four basic principles which guide its activities.

First, the Chamber will accomplish the mission statement by coordinating our diverse interest.While many people consider the Chamber’s membership to be of one voice, we are as diverse as ourcommunity.

Second, we believe guided economic development and a high quality of life are interdependent.Most chamber members live in the community. Like most people, we want to be proud of where welive.

Third, we are committed to continually improving the businesses and community.

Finally, as the premier business organization in the Goshen area with almost 530 members whoemploy nearly 18,000 people, we are the voice of the business community.

GOSHEN BRANDINGMarketing Initiative

In 2011, the Goshen Chamber hired a firm to create a marketing initiative to help mar-ket our community for the purposes of economic, tourism, and workforce development.After more than a year of research, focus groups, interviews with key stakeholders andcompetitors, a brand narrative was presented and approved. The brand narrative is thebasis for the creative work. In short, the narrative reads:

“Everything comes together in Goshen — or, more precisely, everybody. There’s a special spirit that hasalways been here, and it’s wonderfully contagious. What we share in common is the community ideal. Together,we’ve worked to make Goshen a place where business is good, manufacturing thrives, downtown bustles, artistscreate, entrepreneurs reach global markets, families find a friendly environment, good things take root, and peoplepitch in to make it all better. It’s altogether different because we’re in it all together. Some say Goshen is the wayAmerica used to be. We say it’s the way to an uncommonly great future.“

In March of 2012, the company presented their finalreport to community leaders. The logo designed to conveythe narrative is individual letters joined together and reflect-ing our craftsmanship heritage and how we come togetherfor the common good of our community. Because we work together to build a strongcommunity, we accomplish some uncommonly great things. From this comes the tagline,“Common Good. Uncommonly Great.”

The Chamber has adopted anew logo reflecting the brand.The City is also using thebrand logo, along with the

City nickname of the Maple City.

The Goshen Chamber of Commerce is transforming thespace above its first floor offices to create “LaunchPad”, a busi-ness incubation facility aimed at providing early stage companiesand local entrepreneurs with state-of-the-art workspace andaccess to key development and growth services.

The approximately 3,000 square foot spacefronts Main Street and will feature open workspaces, lots of natural light, portable and lockablefiling cabinets, white board walls for creative col-laboration, large wall areas for video projection,high-speed fiber optic wireless internet access, acommon area soft seating space, as well as teamingtables for meetings. The space will accommodateup to 20 people and tenants will have 24/7 accessto the space.

The mission of LaunchPad is to be a placewhere businesses get their start and then launchout into other community spaces as they grow andbecome successful and need more space.

Small Business Counselors will be available to help guide a tenant from concept to“launching” out into the community. Tenants can use the “Pitch Corner” to display/pro-mote/pitch their ideas to potential clients/vendors/investors.

In 1958, Charles Ainlay gave a keynote speechnoting that, “… if the Goshen Community isto continue to prosper in the future, growthmust be planned and guided.” With that inmind, Chamber leaders organized GreaterGoshen Association and raised the funds to cre-ate Goshen Industrial Park.

Today, Goshen Industrial Park is home toalmost thirty-five firms employing more than3,000 people.

The Mission of Greater Goshen Associationis to encourage and promote the growth anddevelopment of the City of Goshen by retainingthe industry which the area enjoys, and toattract and invite new industry to the area whichwill provide greater employment opportunities.From the beginning, Greater Goshen and theCity of Goshen have been strong partners instrengthening our industrial base.

Greater Goshen identified the need for a newindustrial park a few years ago and began dis-cussing the prospects of establishing a newindustrial park. The first goal was to have alocal developer take on this task. A local devel-oper took up the challenge and began plans fora new industrial park. The Chamber, City ofGoshen, and the Economic DevelopmentCorporation of Elkhart County worked togeth-er with developers at Hoogenboom Nofziger tosecure “Shovel Ready”certification of their new200-acre industrial parkon Goshen’s south side.Certification was receivedfor Waterford CommonsBusiness Park in the fallof 2013.

The Greater Goshen Action Plan has four keyareas of focus, they are: (1) Identify and pro-mote the positives for business development inthe Greater Goshen area; (2) Research bestpractices that encourage and support Goshen’s

economic development efforts; (3) Identify fac-tors that discourage business investment andgrowth and take corrective action; and (4)Where appropriate, assist with regional eco-nomic development issues.

The Chamber has been involved in a numberof community development activities duringthis decade. The Downtown Action Agenda waswritten in 2005, resulting in the creation ofDowntown Goshen, Inc. The River RaceRestoration, which resulted in the clean-up ofland on Lincoln Avenue by the Elkhart Riverwhere several new buildings have been built inrecent years.

The Chamber’s River Race Committee, work-ing with the City’s Redevelopment Commission,brought in Ball State to create a plan for theRace area from Plymouth to Pike. This plan wascompleted in mid-September 2005. In 2013agreements have been reached with a developerfor the construction of some condominiumsalong the Mill Race. LaCasa will be rehabilitat-ing an old industrial building for an Artist &Entrepreneurs Live Work Center. Other planscould include some single family homes, a brewpub, and more. Next year will begin a newfuture for a very unique area of Goshen.

Greater Goshen Association, in cooperationwith the City of Goshen, continues evaluatingthe needs of the community and works toinsure that Goshen continues to reach for thestars.

Elkhart County and Goshen is The Center of ItAll! for tourism in Northern Indiana. Whether itis visitors to the historic downtown and the quaintshops lining Main Street, to the Old Bag Factoryor the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, there are manyreasons why tourism is BIG business in Goshen.

The Goshen Chamber welcomes thousands ofvisitors to its website and offices every year. Itproduces a tourism brochure that is distributed atrest stops, restaurants and hotels along the tollroad and at various locations throughout Indiana.The Chamber has a resource center to displayregional tourism information in its lobby visitor’scenter.

The Goshen Chamber works closely with theElkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.The Goshen Chamber initiated the RV’ers RallySavings Card that is given to RV groups utilizingthe Elkhart County Fair Grounds. Chamber mem-ber businesses sign up to participate in the RV’ersRally Savings Card by offering discounts or otherspecial incentives. Several thousand people utilizethe campgrounds at the fair grounds each year,pumping millions of dollars into the local econo-my each year.

The Chamber works with our elected officialsand public employees at all levels of governmentto ensure that these issues are addressed in amanner that meets the needs of all parties con-cerned.

The Chamber’s Public Policy Committee con-stantly reviews legislative issues and developsposition papers that they share with our electedrepresentatives on issues vital to the businesscommunity. These position papers are posted onthe Chamber’s website on our Legislative ActionCenter. From this link on the Chamber’s web-site, members can write their elected representa-tives and encourage them to support theChamber’s position.

Representatives of the Chamber attendGoshen City Council, Planning Commission,and Board of Zoning Appeals meetings. Atthese meetings the Chamber may present posi-tion papers and address issues coming beforethese bodies. Representatives from the Chamberalso go to Indianapolis to represent the business

community before the members of the IndianaGeneral Assembly, and visit Washington, D.C. tomeet with members of our U.S. Congressionaldelegation.

Each year while the Indiana General Assemblyis in session the Goshen Chamber hosts theThird House Sessions at the Chamber offices. TheseSaturday morning community forums bring areaState Legislators together to discuss the issuesbehind the bills they are hearing in Indianapolis.These forums are open to the public and morethan fifty people attended each session this year.

The Public Policy Committee also hosts can-didate forums during the course of the electionyear. The Chamber feels strongly that the publicmust be informed about the issues facing thecommunity and where the candidates stand onthese issues.

The Chamber also hosts regular meetingswith members of our U.S. Congressional dele-gation.

The Goshen Chamber also works with otherchambers in Michiana to address the issues thatimpact all of us in the region. Since 2007 theMichiana Chambers began an annualWashington Fly-in to share concerns with ourU.S. Congressional delegation.

2015The Goshen Chamber was a leader in the

push for passage of the Neighborhood PreservationCode back in 2001. In an effort to not onlytalk about the need to improve the appearanceof the community, the Chamber formed theBeautify Goshen Committee and charged itwith creating a plan of action to assist in meet-ing the goals of the newly adopted ordinance.The mission of “Beautify Goshen” is to organ-ize and promote community pride in theappearance of property as we work together toimprove the quality of life in Goshen.

One of the first things to come from thisnew Chamber committee was the formation ofthe Beautification and Restoration Public Purpose Trust.This non-profit organization was started withthe expressed purpose of providing financialsupport to individuals and groups for makingimprovements to existing structures and for

acquiring properties for redevelopment. CraigYahne serves as chair of The Fund and can bereached at (574) 533-3380. This organizationis funded through tax deductible contribu-tions.

The committee organizes and coordinatesthe annual project, Beautify Goshen! Duringthis week-long event, the community isencouraged to get involved with improving theappearance of their property, plus hundreds ofvolunteers work on special projects throughoutthe city. Beautify Goshen week ends with the

annual Help-A-House project sponsored byLaCasa. The committee recognizes the effortsof individuals and businesses that take pride intheir property and present a BeautificationAward to the most improved property.Individuals and groups also join in the Adopt-A-Spot program to help make sure that certainvisible areas in the community are maintainedon a regular basis.

In a survey of Chamber members, 80%said that the appearance of the communityhas improved as a result of the NeighborhoodPreservation Ordinance and the efforts of theChamber, the City of Goshen, and othergroups.

What’s the best way to stay informed aboutthe movement in the local and the global econo-my? Attend the Chamber’s Sound of the Economyprogram. Presented for one day each month, theprogram offers a baseline global economic fore-cast of information from a variety of sources.

Each month, members attend the sessions ofSound of the Economy to hear the latest forecast!After listening to the national forecast, theattendees give informal reports about their busi-ness or offer their opinion about the forecast,thus giving a local perspective of the economy.

Sound of the Economy has been held at theGoshen Chamber of Commerce since April2001 but has been presented in the Goshencommunity for over 40 years. Former retailerand banker Larry McAdam began invitingdowntown merchants and business leaders to the

boardroom of the First National Bank in 1971to hear the economic forecast and to discuss theforecast’s implications for Goshen business.

The program started with 10 people and for-mer Goshen College economics professor, KarlKreider, hardware owner Bill Mays and invest-ment advisor Frank Martin who all served asdiscussion leaders.

Currently, the program is an audio presenta-tion prepared by Vince Turner fromMutualBank, from a script of information com-piled about the national/global economy. ThenMr. Turner facilitates the discussion in theroundtable format.

The Goshen Chamber of Commerce Board ofDirectors recognizes a direct link between educat-ing our community’s young people and developinga workforce ready with 21st Century skills fortomorrow’s jobs in Goshen. With the help of manyChamber members and their businesses throughoutGoshen, the Chamber Education Committee isthere to support Goshen Community Schools inthis effort.

The Education Committee has identified fourmajor areas of emphasis for the group’s work.These four areas of work are designed to be a sup-port to Goshen Community Schools.

The Chamber’s Education Committee has foursub committees to work on these areas of empha-sis which include: Early Childhood and Pre-Kindergarten Learning; the ICE/CooperativeEducation Program; Marketing; and BusinessEducation. Business and industry leaders from theGoshen Chamber of Commerce have come togeth-er to support Goshen Community Schools intraining our future workforce and develop tomor-row’s leaders.

The Goshen High School has the InternationalBaccalaureate Diploma program. The Inter-national Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is ademanding, two-year program of curriculum andservice that meets the needs of highly motivatedsecondary students. The Diploma Program offers acomprehensive and integrated approach to learningthat prepares students for rigorous assessments in

six subject areas during grades 11 and 12. Studentsmust also complete a minimum of 150 hours inCreativity, Action, and Service activities, a 4,000-word essay of original research, and a Theory ofKnowledge course. The International BaccalaureateOrganization (IBO) awards its diploma to studentswho perform successfully on the six external exam-inations and fulfill all other requirements of theprogram at an authorized IB world school. It isrecognized as the highest diploma currently offeredby any high school in the world.

It’s clear: To attract and retain businesses inGoshen, the community needs to have well-trainedhighly skilled workers for the jobs of the future.The Goshen Chamber of Commerce, with GoshenCommunity Schools, is leading the way toChampion our Commun-ity’s Business Future.

The committee has supported and encouragedbusiness people to volunteer for reading programsin Goshen elementary schools. A panel of businessleaders has met with Goshen high school studentsto discuss what employers look for in employees.The committee is creating a speakers bureau direc-tory of business people that will be available toclassroom teachers. The committee is also workingwith the Goshen Community Schools to better tellthe uncommonly great story of our SchoolDistrict. Each new school year we welcome newteachers to Goshen and share the great story ofour community and express our pride and thanksto those entrusted with our future.

The Goshen Human Resources Network(GHRN) exists to help those individualswith HR responsibilities at Goshen areabusinesses. This could range from the busi-ness owner to an HR staff person.

Members of the GHRN will be able tostay current on compliance and legal issuesthrough networking and educational pro-grams. Members also build a local networkwith others with similar responsibilities.

The Goshen HR Network meets the firstThursday of each month at noon at theGoshen Chamber of Commerce; meetingslast one hour unless otherwise agreed to andthere is a $10 lunch charge. There is typicallyno meeting in July. Members are emailednotices about the meetings at least one weekprior.

Members of the GHRN must have pro-fessional or business responsibility in humanresources management or administration.Their employer must be a member of theGoshen Chamber of Commerce.Applications for membership will bereviewed by the Leadership Team. An appli-cant (or member) may be denied membershipin the Network if they present a conflict ofinterest to the Network’s purpose.

Annually, Chamber members partici-pate in golf and tennis events as a wayto network with one another and sup-port the Chamber financially.

In August, the Chamber rolls out thered carpet for its members for the Annual Golfand Tennis Outing. Golfers and tennis playersof all skill levels enjoy a day of fun atMaplecrest Country Club in Goshen. Nearly350 golf and tennis enthusiasts come togetherfor tournaments on the course and the courts atMaplecrest. With the golf and tennis, Chambermembers are treated to lunch between roundsand sets, entertainment and an hors d’oeuvresreception following the day of play. There’sputting contests, raffle and door prizes andopportunities for one lucky golfer to pick up abrand new car from the Goshen Auto Dealersfor a hole in one.

The Annual Golf and Tennis Outing is our sig-nature event for the Goshen Chamber ofCommerce and is designed to bring the mem-bership together. The Goshen Chamber is the

area’s premiere networking organization andstrives to promote business to business contactamong the over 530 member companies of theChamber. While the events themselves are won-derful ways to meet and network, the manyhours of planning several committees dobehind the scenes are a great way to volunteerfor the Chamber and work closely with fellowmembers.

There are many ways that Chamber members support thework of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. First, and mostimportantly, businesses make a decision to join the premierbusiness organization in the community.
