Lagar de Bezana

Lagar: place where grapes are crushed and wines and oils are produced.

Bezana: Village near Santander, Spain, where the family of the founder of Lagar, Ricardo Bezanilla, originates from.

Lagar de Bezana: Vineyard and winery in Chile, located in the upper Cachapoal Valley, at the feet of the Andes, aiming to create the best possible expression of the local terroir

Our vineyards are located 87 km (50 miles) south of Santiago at the feet of Andes Mountains at 650 metres (1800 ft) above sea level.

The deep, gravelly soils, clear skies and cool nights give our wines intense color, unique freshness and elegant tannins. Low yields guarantee concentrated wines and the virtual absence of rain during the growing season makes viticulture relatively easy.

Location

The VineyardLagar de Bezana has 54 hectares of vineyards in an estate called “La Esperanza,” on a deep alluvial soil.

• 37 ha (85 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1999 with cuttings from old chilean vineyards.

• 12 ha (30 acres) of Syrah, planted in 2001 being some of the oldest existing ones in Chile

• 5 ha of other varieties such as Carmenère, Petit Verdot and Tannat to complement Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache and Mouvedre to complement Syrah.

Yields are restricted to around 8.000 kg/ha and small parcels are selected by the grape grower and wine maker in order to produce limited quantities of wines on a quarter to a third of the estate. The rest of the grapes is sold to other wineries

The WineryGravity-fed, with a capacity of 130.000 liters in stainless steel tanks and 200 oak barrels, the winery is perfectly suited to make high quality wines on a small scale.

We use traditional vinification techniques, including gentle destemming and crushing, spontaneous fermentations and punch-downs as well as pump-overs to respect the fruit as much as possible.

The Wines

Lagar de Bezana produces small quantities of wines with unique personality from the foothills of the Chilean Andes.

The Cachapoal Valley produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah with lots of fresh fruit aromas, without overt peppery, green or menthol notes.

The wines are medium bodied, with particularly smooth tannins and good length.

The Labels

The drawings on the labels were made inspired by the wines and the landscape by the well known Chilean artist Carlos Maturana, better known as Bororo. The result is as colorful and playful as the wines themselves!
