    A rather raunchy, acousto-pelvic, Southern rock-tinged funk romp paying tribute to late 70's bar music. This was recorded on the 1997 release Ladies Night (Dusty Closet, DCD-96002).

    The intro to Ladies Night is a unique and syncopated rhythm. It may take a bit of practice to get the overall feel.

    Note 1 : In this section, and in other similar sections throughout the piece, the right hand uses an alternating bass drum thump with the heel of the open right hand and a down stroke "whunk damp" or strum. A number of instances also include upstrokes, before and after the beat.

    Note 2 : The left hand immediately dampens the right hand strum and in the process, produces a percussive effect.

    Note 3 : These damps are in reality, whunk damps. The strings are struck and sounded and immediately dampened.

    Note 4 : In this figure, the damped strum, or chunk is frailed with the nail of the middle finger of the right hand. There is a rather quick transition from the left hand over the neck to traditional style and back again for this funky little riff.

    Note 5 : In this bar and the next, the left hand first finger completely barres all strings and then lifts up, barring only the three high strings.

    Note 6 : After the bass drum thump, quickly slap the fingers of the open hand on the bottom side of the guitar for the rim shot.

    Note 7 : The accents in this bar give a triplet feel to the strumming.

    Tablature represents the six strings of the guitar. Notes and chords are indicated by the placement of a number on a given string. The following entries illustrate articulations and competencies required in playing Prestons music.

    The strings are represented with the high string at the top and the low string at the bottom. This is important to note when interpreting the strum symbols: remember that on a tablature staff, the strum indicates which direction (up or down) is to be taken from the high string to the low or vice-versa. If the arrow is pointing up, its a down stroke, if the arrow is pointing down, its an up stroke.

    Another important rhythmic and sonic technique used by Preston is the whunk-damp strum. In this technique, you strum across all the strings with back of your right hand nails and damp the bass strings with the palm, letting the high strings ring. Preston opens his fingers when strumming down and uses his thumbnail when coming back up. This technique is significantly represented in this collection in the piece, Ladies Night.

    hammer on, pull-off (slurs) or tieThe curved line between the two numbers means that 1) if the second number is higher than the first, a hammer on is indicated, 2) if the second number is lower than the first, a pull-off is indicated, 3) if the numbers are the same pitch, the note is held for the duration of both.

    slideThe first note is plucked (or hammered-on from nowhere) and the finger slides to the next note.

    muted stringThe note does not produce a pitch. It is muted by the right hand.

    partial barreIndicates which strings are to be fretted and with which finger.

    fast down stroke strumThe strummed notes sound like they are produced simultaneously.

    fast up stroke strumThe strummed notes sound like they are produced simultaneously.

    slow down stroke strumThe strummed notes sound like individual notes, one after the other.

    slow up stroke strumThe strummed notes sound like individual notes, one after the other.

    arpeggioThe notes are sounded by the right hand fingers, plucked rapidly one after another.

    harmonic (natural)The fret number of the harmonic is shown in the enclosure.

    bendThe note is fingered at the fret number indicated, then the string is bent up to the pitch indicated by the second number (or released from a higher pitch down to a lower one). This is also noted in the standard notation.

    barre or partial barreThe C indicates a barre. Roman numerals are used to indicate the fret at which the barre occurs. If there is a fraction after the Roman numerals, this indicates the number of strings to be barred. In the example three strings are barred at the second fret. If there is no fraction indicated, all 6 strings are barred. The horizontal line indicates the duration the barre is to be held.
