no longer reserved for the rich and famous, cosmetic surgery is becoming more common for women who wish to maintain a more youthful appearance. one of the least invasive cosmetic procedures gaining popularity is the use of Botox to temporarily improve the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows, called glabellar lines.

according to Hans schlecht, do, a board-certified anesthesiologist, Botox injections can be used to smooth moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles around the

eyes.

dr. schlecht said, “tiny injections are made into the brow area to help smooth those deep frown lines that occur as we age. as skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning often creates visible lines and wrinkles which can be helped by Botox injections.”

the Botox cosmetic™, a natural purified protein, relaxes muscles by blocking nerve impulses. Botox cosmetic™ reduces the appearance of wrinkles by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. once the muscles are at rest, the skin becomes smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance.

While the results of Botox cosmetic™ are not permanent, they can be expected to last up to four

months. repeat treatments will then be needed. “the tiny amount of Botox injected will not effect the rest of the body, but it does reduce wrinkles and frowns for an extended period of time,” said dr. schlecht.

since the procedure is non-surgical in nature, there’s no major recovery time involved. patients may experience some localized swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness, but most people get back to work or other activities right away after the injections. other very rare side effects are headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop and nausea. the good news is that most side effects are mild and short-lived.

Botox cosmetic™ injections, like other cosmetic procedures, are typically not covered by insurance. the price will vary depending upon how many areas of the face are treated and how much of the Botox chemical is used.

aside from cosmetic surgery, what else can women do to minimize the physical affects of aging skin? While the skin naturally looses its elasticity over time, sun exposure and smoking are two of the most important causes of premature wrinkling.

the best defense against the effects of aging is to use a good sunscreen with a spF of 30. some moisturizing skin creams come with built-in sunscreen and they help lubricate the skin while adding a layer of sun protection to the face and arms.

Quitting smoking also helps. smoking causes premature wrinkling by decreasing the blood supply to peripheral tissues, including the skin.

dr. schlecht adds, “Women who are considering Botox cosmetic™ should consult with a qualified physician beforehand to obtain a realistic evaluation on what to expect and how they will look after the procedure.”

Dr. Schlecht practices at Aurora Health Center in Fond du Lac (920) 907-7000.

Lifesaving Tests You Can’t Afford To Miss

Annual ExamsWe know that the earlier we identify any potential health problems, the better the outcome will be. as an added bonus, regular check-ups and routine health screenings give women reassurances about many things they don’t need to worry about. Here are some lifesaving medical tests that every woman needs on a regular basis and why.

Be sMARt ABOut YOuR heARt

We know that with proper lifestyle modifications, including healthy diet and increased physical activity, approximately 80% of coronary disease could be prevented.

one of the easiest ways to measure your heart health is to get a fasting blood test for total cholesterol levels: HdL “good” cholesterol, LdL “bad” cholesterol, and blood fats known as triglycerides.

your health care provider should also test your blood pressure, since high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease.

diabetes is another risk factor for heart disease. if you have a family history of diabetes or are overweight, you are at particularly high risk of developing diabetes (and heart disease). talk to your provider about having a blood sugar test.

the POWeRFul PAP

starting three years after becoming sexually active or by age 21, whichever comes first,

women should have regular pap tests to detect any abnormal cell changes that could lead to cervical cancer.

the american cancer society recommends that the pap test be done annually until age 30. after 30, if a healthy woman has had three completely normal pap tests in a row, she can have a pap test every two to three years (but she should still see a health care provider every year for an exam).

AN X-RAY CAN sAVe YOuR liFe

Women aged 40 and older should get a mammogram (breast X-ray) every one or two years. if there is a history of breast cancer in her family, a woman should get her first mammogram 10 years before her relative was diagnosed. Women older than 50 should have regular mammograms, preferably every year.

Unfortunately, studies have suggested that women may not be getting regular mammograms. With breast cancer being treatable in many cases and even curable, every woman should be getting regular mammograms to catch this cancer at its earliest stage.

as inconvenient as it may be to schedule a mammogram, when it comes back clean, women know they’re in the clear for another year, and that’s reassuring. it’s a small investment that may some day save your life and most insurance companies cover this service.

Unfortunately, for many women their own health often takes a back seat to family responsibilities or their careers. most women take better care of family members than they do themselves. i encourage my female patients to get regular check-ups and to make time for their own health.

We saw animal prints a little last year but animal prints are so very hot and big, again being able to find it in all components of an outfit.

A trend that is not only fashionable but comfortable comes this fall in the form of shapes. Vests, sweaters and poncho’s are where we will find them. these come in many different weaves, lengths and colors.

Fall 2011 has three big trends, some that we haven’t seen in a decade or two. While layering is still important ensuring you have the hot trends incorporated into your outfit is a must. this year we see faux fur in all components of an outfit, from vests and sweaters to shoes, handbags and scarves.

Oh, Lola! from Marc Jacobs is vibrant, flirtatious and light hearted. It leaves you feeling youthful, flirting with your senses.

Burberry Body is a elegant, feminine and seductive scent that captures the essence of the Burberry brand and its unique British heritage.

FrAGrAnCedon’t forget to complete your outfit with a fragrance. while there are many different scents to choose from there are four must haves this fall.

Please Don’t Underestimate Your Risk for Heart Disease

Women often underestimate their risk of developing heart disease.

each year approximately 2.5 million women nationwide are treated for cardiac problems. most women are shocked to learn they are twice as likely to die from heart disease than from all cancers combined.

although progress is being made, heart disease in women is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed late in the disease process. Heart disease may present different symptoms in women than in men.

WARNiNg sigNs FOR WOMeN iNClude:

• Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes

• Jaw pain radiating down to the neck and arm

• Paleness

• Indigestion/upper abdominal pain

• Shortness of breath with mild exertion

• Chronic fatigue without reason

• Racing or irregular heartbeat

• Heart palpitations - very strong or fast

• Unexplained perspiration or cold sweat

• Lightheadedness, fainting, dizziness

• Nausea

• Upper back pain without apparent cause

if you should experience any of the above symptoms, please seek help fast.

some risk factors for heart disease can’t be controlled, such as increasing age, family health history, race and gender. there are, however, many steps that women can take to protect their heart health.

they can:

• Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. smokers’ risk of developing coronary artery disease is two to four times that of nonsmokers.

• Engage in aerobic exercise 30-60 minutes, most days of the week. physical activity helps control blood cholesterol levels, diabetes and obesity, as well as helping lower blood pressure.

• Adopt a low-fat, healthy diet.

• Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. people with excess body fat, especially if the majority

is stored around the waist, are more likely to develop heart disease even if they have no other risk factors. Losing even as few as 10 pounds can lower your heart disease risk.

• Keep blood pressure less than 120/80. High blood pressure increases the heart’s workload, causing the heart to thicken and become stiffer. When high blood pressure exists with obesity, smoking, high blood cholesterol levels or diabetes, the risk of heart attack or stroke increases several times.

• Have your cholesterol checked. Keep total cholesterol less than 200, HdL greater than or equal to 40, and LdL less than or equal to 100. as blood cholesterol rises, so does the risk

of heart disease.

• Control diabetes. Diabetes seriously increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

• Develop strategies to adapt to stress.

By understanding their risk factors for heart disease and taking appropriate steps to control them, women can be proactive about their heart health.

some allergies are easy to identify by the pattern of symptoms following exposure to a particular substance, while others may masquerade as other conditions. Here are some clues that could indicate you have developed an allergy, not a cold.

• Repeated or chronic cold-like symptoms lasting longer than a week or two, or developing at about the same time each year

• itchy, runny eyes

• itching or tingling sensations in the mouth and throat (itchiness is not usually a cold symptom, but the hallmark of an allergy problem)

• coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing or other respiratory symptoms

• hives or patches of bumps or itchy, red skin that “weep” or oozes clear fluid and forms a crust

some common allergens are:

• dust

• pollen (trees, grasses, weeds)

• fungi/molds

• furry animals

• latex

• foods (especially cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat and fish)

if you suspect allergies, consult with an allergy specialist for proper evaluation and treatment.

AllergiesIs it an Allergy or A Cold?

there is a growing body of scientific evidence linking sleep (or lack of quality sleep) to overall health and wellness. approximately half of all american adults report that sleepiness interferes with their job productivity.

this sleep epidemic not only impacts job performance and safety, but if left untreated, sleep disorders may lead to more serious health problems.

obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that is estimated to affect more than 12 million americans. the word “apnea” means a pause in breathing.

With this disorder, a person repeatedly stops breathing for short periods of time during sleep. Warning signs include a pattern of loud snoring interrupted by pauses in breathing, with snorts or gasps before breathing resumes.

people suffering from sleep apnea may be completely unaware they have this problem. Family members and bed partners are often the first to recognize it. they may hear episodes of loud snoring, followed by silence, due to the breathing pauses.

Losing weight, managing a nasal allergy or infection, correcting a nasal deformity or removing tonsils and adenoids can help this condition. in severe cases, surgery on the throat and palate may be recommended to reduce excess tissue and widen the air passage.

the most common non-surgical treatment for sleep apnea, however, is nasal continuous positive airway pressure (cpap). a cpap mask fits over the nose during sleep and a mechanical device gently pushes air into the mask and into the airway.

How do you know if you have a sleep disorder? if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you may need to be evaluated:

• Do you fight to stay awake during the day?

• Do you awaken frequently at night?

• Do you feel sleepy during the day, even after a night’s sleep?

• Do you snore loudly and keep your partner awake with your snoring?

• Do you frequently talk or walk in your sleep?

• Do you ever awaken gasping for breath or unable to breathe?

• Do you often awake with a morning headache?

Untreated sleep apnea is associated with a higher risk of potentially serious health problems, such as:

• high blood pressure

• two to three-fold increased risk of heart attack and stroke

• depression and irritability

• erectile dysfunction in men

if you think you or someone you know suffers from obstructive sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, help is available. in many cases costs are covered by health insurance.
