WORKING PRINCIPLE
Mount the specimen between two sealed chambers whose pressure are different.
The gas molecule will pass through the film from the higher side to the lower side
under the function of pressure difference (gas concentration difference). Detect the
pressure change of the lower side to get the transmission rate.
TESTING ITEMS
The packaging materials’ gas transmission rate, permeability coefficient, diffusion
coefficient, and solubility coefficient are the determinant parameters for its barrier
properties. And they are effected by condition (temperature and humidity).
EXPLANATION OF THE TESTING ITEMS
Gas transmission rate is the volume of gas which, under steady conditions, crosses unit area of the sample in unit time under unit pressure difference and at constant temperature. This volume is expressed at standard temperature and pressure.
The reliability of the tested GTR depends on the evenness of the specimen thickness.
The rate is usually expressed in cubic centimeters under standard atmospheric pressure per square meter 24h under a pressure difference of 1atm (cm3/m2.d.atm).
Permeability coefficient is gas transmission rate at per unit thickness. This data is independent with materials’ thickness. It expresses the materials’ essential property.
Diffusion coefficient represents molecular transmission capacity through film because of thermal motion of molecular chain. In one words, diffusion coefficient express the moving speed inside the film.
Solubility coefficient expresses the speed of the gas molecule absorbed and pass through the surface of material.

3. Multiple test modes of normal, nonstandard, proportional and non-proportional • Normal or standard stands for the testing condition of 23℃,1atm, and with standard
configuration. All the other conditions belong to nonstandard.• Proportional or non-proportional stands for the criterion used by system during the tests.
Proportional means to determine the stop point by change ratio of the testing point, non-proportional means to determine the stop point by pressure change instead of the ratio of the change.
4. Curve-fitting methodology of random condition, can easily work out solubility coefficient, diffusion coefficient, permeability coefficient under temperature from
-273ºC to 200ºC.• During daily tests, some temperatures can hardly be reached due to current
techniques or too much cost, though some these conditions are necessary for tests. By curve-fitting methodology, we could get the result required under normal conditions easily. This method is developed by Labthink and unique in the world at present.
• The curve-fitting means get results of non-normal conditions under normal conditions by using amount of academic data of lab.
5. Intelligent operation, full automatic.• The operators need only fix the sample and set relevant parameters before clicking
”test”, the whole process will be finished automatically.
6. Extremely high accuracy.• The instrument is applicable to test the gas permeability of relevant materials, hence,
whether the pipes are leakage are much important. We Labthink adopts world-leading components to secure the extremely high accuracy of whole test system.

7. The whole test process is detected by server.• Sometimes, the test need a long period due to different permeability characters of
samples. To keep the process more smooth and avoid any failure, we adopt sever instead of normal computer.
8. Extension volume.• Means to expand the volume of lower chamber. The specification of pressure sensor is
fixed, by expanding the volume could reduce pressure, therefore, we get more widely test range.
9. Temperature control system.• VAC-V1 (normal-50 degree Celsius) Include temperature control system, with heating
function only. • VAC-V2, V3 have professional temperature control system, both heating and cooling
functions.
10. Vacuum degree of test chamber.• The lowest pressure that could be vacuumized of the test chamber.
11. Test pressure –0.1MPa ~ +0.1MPa.• -0.1~+0.1MPa relative to atmosphere pressure. 0~0.2MPa relative to absolute pressure.

Qualitative filter paper is used to some qualitative tests without calculating exact data, while the quantitative one is used to get the exact data of dreg and some indiscerptible. Generally, heating furnace is used for further process.)

“DATA-CURVE-FITTING” can obtain various permeability data of the same kind of material with different thickness at various temperatures, based on the test results that are easily obtained under normal conditions.
On the one side, this function makes impossible test a reality and reduces test costs simultaneously. On the other hand, it greatly improves test efficiency and forms reliable basis to scientific research and production.
This is a total new technique, and we have given speech about this technique through the 16th IAPRI conference.
