Jesus said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
FROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR
The Assumption and the Acadians Tuesday, August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Univer-sal Church has set this date as one of the few Holy Days of Obligation during the year. Our Mass times are listed below. In 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly
declared the Assumption of Mary as a defined dogma of the faith. But the Feast of the Assumption or “Dormition”(falling asleep) of Mary had been formally celebrated since at least the 500s. In the year 847, Pope Leo IV gave the feast a vigil celebration and an octave. Though we no longer celebrate a formal octave, we do celebrate the Feast of the Queenship of Mary eight days later on August 22. The 4th and 5th decades of the Glori-ous Mysteries of the Rosary celebrate these two feasts. And while the whole Church celebrates the Assumption, for many of us in Acadiana this feast is even more spe-cial. The Assumption is the patroness of the Acadian people. In Acadiana, we celebrate this feast as a day to remember our Acadian ancestry. Annually, a beautiful Eucharistic procession takes place (via boat) along the Bayou Teche from Leonville down to St. Martinville. If you would like to make a pilgrimage and go to one of the stops, information can be found at fetedieuduteche.org . Whether you can make that or not, be sure to do some-thing special as we celebrate this wonderful feast. And, like our Acadian ancestors, let us place our trust in the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. - In Christ, T-Père
