In summary:

Honesty, Responsibility, Integrity.

This list of qualities was created by the students of KS 3 in 2007. We hope you will agree that these are appropriate qualities for all of our students in KS 3.

ItdoesnotmatterifitisyourfirstyearatSeoulForeign British School (SFBS) or you are an old hand and have spent all your schooling here: you are special.

Everyone here at the British School wants your KS3 years to be as successful as possible because this is where you will build the skills to help you through senior school and into the university, college, or career of your choice.

To get off to a goodstart, one of the firstthings you should do is read this handbook from cover to cover.

The single most important thing to realise is that the responsibility for making these years a successful is yours and yours alone. We expect you to start taking more responsibility for your learning—no one else can do it for you.

Your parents and teachers will be there to help you, but you are the only one that can make it happen.

Your time in KS3 is a major crossroads in your life — it’s a time to think, take responsibility, and make smart choices.

Page 4: Ks3 student homework planner 14 15

HOMEWORKYou will have aboout 1½ to 2 hours homework a night. You should also involve yourself in going over the work you did that day or week to make yourself more familiar with it, or in preparing for what you will encounter the next day.

You will need to balance homework with good health habits—eat well and sleep well. You cannot learn if you are asleep in class!

Have a good lunch and breakfast each day—

able to provide help.

It is your responsibility to have homework completed to the best standard and turned in on the due date - good habits are the things that lead to good homework, andeffectivelearning.

Make sure you use your Planner. You need to write in something - even if it is ‘no homework’ or ‘see Haiku’ and make sure your parents see AND sign it every week so they are familier with your projects and their due dates.

you cannot learn if your brain doesn’t have the nutrients it needs to function.

Set up a homework routine - do it at the same time, in the same place each day.Have everything you need there to do the job, and do it without interruption.

If you are having problems with homework or you repeatedly can’t complete it in the given 2 hours, talk with your teacher - s/he will be

In KS 3 expectations are high. You will be challenged and you will need to work hard. In addition to developng your knowledge, you will also learn how to manage time and how to be successful.

Textbook and exercise books will be given to you. The onus is on you to look after them—especially your textbooks.

Textbooks are very expensive and if lost or damaged cannot be purchased in Korea—

ACADEMICSthey must be shipped from overseas.

Should you lose or damage a textbook, theprocedure will be similar to library books—we will depreciate the cost and charge you for the replacement.

If you need a quiet space for research or study, the MC is always available to you right through the school day. We have made sure that the MC has been specially resourced to supplement your programme of learning in Key Stage 3.

These extra materials include books, CDs, DVDs, and a special set of subscriptions to give you access to a series of online data bases and e-books. Staff in theMC can give you more information about these and tell you how to access them.

Health Warning!Do not carry all of your books and bags around with you all day. Store them in your locker and only carry what you need for indivdual lessons - but don’t forget your planner and laptop!

Remember to take home your PE kit each day and don’t leave it to fester inside your locker.

If your locker breaks in any way please notify Mrs Koh.

ABSENCESIf you are ill, or you have valid family reasons for being away, your teachers will help you catch up on the work that you have missed.

If your absence is for another reason it is considered unexcused and your teachers are under no obligation to help you—although they probably will if you show a willingness to catch up.

Remember, if you are away for any reason, itisyourresponsibilitytofindout what was covered and what you must do to catch up. Most teachers post information on Haiku.

If you are absent, please ensure your parents inform the British School office, eitherbyphoneorbyemail.

If you are absent on a given day, youmay not attend any after schoolactivityonthatdaywithoutthespecificpermission of the Headteacher.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCESAs a KS3 student, you are required to attend the parentteacher conferences, which are usually held in November and February.

This is a valuable experience as you can hearfirst-handwhat

your teachers are saying - and you may also have an opportunity to share some of your own thoughts.

The sessions last for 90 minutes and during that time your parents will be able to visit all of the teachers who teach you.

Your parents will need to sign up beforehand using the Parent Teacher Conference wiki.

You and your parents will spend around 5-6 minutes with each teacher so waiting time is kept to a minimum.

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONEveryone takes part in PE, your classes will be on thefield, in theUACor the Gym.

Boys and girls will have separate classes.

Due to numbers, you will not have a PE locker in the Gym/UAC, so.....

Take a soft bag with you to PE and put your clothes and shoes in that bag. Take the bag out of the locker room to the Gym or UAC. Put the

bag tidily at the side of the area where you will be working.

You should change in the Gym changing rooms - you should not be changing at break or lunch times.

Treat all facilities and equipment with respect.

Sometimes, you will share a facility like the UAC with another class. Show consideration for their teacher by

keeping your noise level reasonable.

Watches should be removed for PE. You should not be wearing any other jewellery.

CCTV is in operation in the vicinity of the Gym/UAC locker rooms.

Please change quickly andquietly; theteachersare not there to ‘police’ you - responsibility is yours!

THE CAFETERIA AND COFFEE SHOPThe cafeteria uses fingerscannerstoverifypayments from your account to buy lunch.

Cash can also be used to purchase food items, but it’s quicker to use your finger, so keepyour account topped up.

Whilst in the cafeteria, talk quietly. Don’t play with or share any food

or utensils (allergies).

Before returning your tray and utensils, ensure that where you sat was left tidy.

Ensure that trays, plates, and utensils do not leave the cafeteria. Likewise, food should not be taken out of the cafeteria. Drinks can only be taken as far as thefield’syellowline.

If you bring a packed lunch, take it to the cafeteria and eat with your friends.

You are trusted to choose a sensible, healthy, nutritious lunch, so be sensible when choosing your food.

The coffee shop hastime restricted access for student purchases.

BREAK TIMESYou use the field forlunch time and the main BS play area for break times. There will be time in the morning break session to eat any snacks you may have brought with you.

You should not be in classrooms during breaks without the direct supervision of a teacher.

You may, however, use the Activity Room for playing a board game or quietly chatting, oryou may choose to go to the MC.

The duty teacher on thefieldmustgiveyou

permission to leave that area. If given permission, do not be late for class. Not knowing the time will be no excuse.

On wet days you can go to the MC or your homeroom classroom.

Moving between Classes:

Your timetable allows you enough time to be prompt for the start of the lesson. Be sensible and do not abuse this - you are expected to be on time for every lesson.

Think carefully when moving around the campus, don’t interrupt other classes.es.

SFBS has a ‘No hat, no play’policyforthehottestmonths of the year (generally August to the end of September and Spring break to June).

The hats can be purchased from the Spirit Shop for W10,000 each. For KS3 the style is that of a ‘baseball cap’.

‘NO HAT - NO PLAY’

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIESIt is important that you have a variety of activities in your life. This is also a good time in your life to try new sports, pastimes, and games, these in turn can help you broaden your friendship base.

SFS provides a selection of extra-curricular activities and you will also be given the opportunity to mix with your Middle School friends.

When you sign up for an activity you need to understand that teachers

have undertaken a commitment to provide you with this service. As such, you should commit to attend theactivity each week.

Your teachers are always working to increase your options in other divisions of SFS. There is often limited spaces in certain activities, but, with the British School providing opportunities such as the under 13s and under 15s FOBISIA/KISAC Sports, choir, orchestra as well as KAIAC sports’ programmes, you will hopefully findsomething to enjoy.

For information about School Wide Extra-curricular actitivies,

refer to the online SWEP page.

You should be ready and willing to welcome your peers from the Middle School into activities set up by the British School.

High School Sports

Sometimes we have young athletes, e.g. swimmers, cross country runners or soccer players, who are very good for their age. KS3 activities will be designed for students your age. High School sporthasaverydifferentemphasis, so you will need special permission to compete at High School level.

any kind of bullying, excessive aggressive/ inappropriate behaviour towards another student or a member of staff, the studentwouldbe seen by the Key Stage Leader and/or the Headteacher and appropriate action taken, in consultation with the student’s parents.

Short DetentionBelow are listed examples of repeated behaviour which would lead to a short detention:• latehomework;• untidylocker;• failure to take the correct

equipmenttoaclass;• scruffyappearance;• beinglateforalesson;• inappropriate displays of

affection. This is not an exhaustive list but gives an idea of the type of action that would lead to this punishment. Long DetentionBelow are listed examples of behaviour which would lead to a long detention:• repeatedshortdetentions;• swearing;• aggressive/ inappropriate

behaviour towards other studentsoramemberofstaff.

This is not an exhaustive list, but gives an idea of the type of action that would lead to this punishment.

SFBS operates a Positive Discipline ethos - eg ‘please walk’ as opposed to ‘don’t run’. We don’t have many rules as we treat you as young adults and expect you to behave and respond accordingly. However, occasionally students don’t respond to this approach and so, here are a few consequences should that apply to you....

Report CardIf a student continues to behave below the expectations of the school, they may be placed on a report card. This will highlight one or two key areas for improvement. The student would be required to submit this card at the beginning of each lesson. Each teacher would then record whether the student’s behaviour achieved, or at least was working towards, their targets, so helping the student focus on the areas they need to improve. It is hoped that after a week, improvement would be seen and the student would then continue to act appropriately without the support of the report card. If behaviour was still not acceptable, further disciplinary action would be taken.Further ActionIn the case of extreme inappropriate behaviour by a student. e.g. stealing,

SCHOOL BUSESIf you ride an SFS bus, your parents have signed an agreement stating that you will obey the bus rules. The Activities Director is in charge of the buses and deals with any problems that may arise. Hehasanofficein the Business Office(access from the fieldside).

Can you ride the bus to a friend’s house? If you are intending to go to a friend’s house and do not usually ride that bus you need to get a bus pass from Mrs. Koh, the School Secretary, at morning break. This is granted on a space available basis only.

Missed the Bus?If you miss the bus, do not try to go home on your own. Return to school and notify Mrs. Koh or the Headteacher. If the school is closed or no-one is available, see the guard at the Elementary School lobby or at the guard’s pagoda by the Lyso Centre building.

If that doesn’t help, the cell phone numbers of Dr. Gray and Mr. McOrist are posted on the main school entrance doors.

Can I ride the Activity Bus?The activity bus,—called the “Late Bus” by the students, is not for students that stay late after school to play with friends.

To ride the late bus you must be a regular bus rider, be staying after school for tutoring, study in the SMC or in an organised activity, and have an SFS ID card. You may also see Mrs. Koh and pay 10,000 won.

The bus will not take you to your regular stop but to a central location—see Mrs Koh to find out which stopis closest to your home.

Make sure your parents know you are going to ride the late bus and you could be as late as 7pmgettinghome.

You may NOT leave school and then come back to take the late bus. If you do, you risk losing all bus privileges and/or possible further sanctions.

SFS ID CARDSEach KS3 student will get an SFS picture ID card. This will allow you to borrow materials from the Media Commons (MC), use the cloud printers and ride the late bus.

Riding the late bus without an ID card will

cost 10,000 won and you will need a bus pass from Mrs. Koh.

If you lose your ID card, you can get a temporary bus pass from Mrs. Koh for free. A new ID card however, will cost W20,000.

Do not lend your ID card to other students. Using another person’s ID card to ride the buses can result in both of you losing library and bus privileges and/or possible further sanctions.
