Dear Parents/Carers

Thank you for the excellent response to my request that students are equipped and ready to learn. Students need to have a pencil case with pen, pencil, ruler, mathematical equipment and a scientific calculator. They can then access all of their learning and not be at a disadvantage to their peers. School equipment and calculators are available through The Learning Hub. It was a pleasure to meet yesterday our local Member of Parliament, Alberto Costa. I enjoyed showing him around the school. As always, our students were fully engaged in their learning and enjoying school. We discussed how the school has developed and improved over the last few years and I also shared our excellent first set of GCSE results. I would like to thank Alberto Costa MP for taking the time out of his busy schedule to visit our school.

So far this year students have streamed 1794 GCSE pods. Last year we were in the top 50 schools in the country for streaming and downloads. Our Year 11 found it an invaluable tool in examination preparation. If your child is in Years’ 10 or 11 I would like you to encourage them to use GCSE pod. They can use the App to support the more traditional styles of revision and they do not need to wait until examination time. There is a strong emphasis on knowledge in the new GCSE specifications. Students need to be continually revisiting topics and subjects, rather than just in the weeks before examinations. I am delighted to welcome back our external University graduates who guide the students on effective revision techniques. Year 11 last year felt that this had a very high impact on how they studied. Students in Years’ 10 and 11 also have English internal assessments in the next few weeks.

Miss Sultana is launching this year’s Baking Club. Last year was a huge success, culminating in a Lutterworth High School bake off. I would like to thank Miss Sultana and the staff involved for another great after school activity.

It has been another busy week of sporting fixtures. I would like to thank everybody who has represented the school. The netball matches were incredibly close and competitive! See inside for our sports report.

Student Achievment Student AchievmentWell done to Eve Hopkins (Cunningham) and her pony who were placed nationally for their dressage to music test. It was a huge competition venue and a fantastic achievement.

Ethan Graham (Cunnigham) has competed in some taekwondo tournaments recently at black belt level.

He was representing Hay Harris TKD taekwondo club.

On 17th September he competed at the U.I.T.F winter championships at Alfreton. He achieved:

• Gold for Special Techniques • Silver for Sparring • Bronze in Patterns

On 1st October he competed at the L.T.S.I English open championships and achieved:

• Gold for Special Techniques.

House System and Student CouncilJust a brief update on the Student Council and House Captain applications...

This academic year we have changed the format of the Student Council slightly so that we have House Reps for each year group, as opposed to Form reps as we have previously had. This is to tie the Student Council and the House System together.

KS3 - Student Council applications have all been received and are fantastic! We are looking over them over the next couple of days and will be informing students next week if their applications have been successful. We will have our first meeting as a team next week.

KS4 - The deadline for Year 10 House Position applications has just passed. We are now collating the responses and will, next week, be choosing who will be the Vice House Captain, Vice Sports Captain and Vice Secretary for each House. These students will go on to be the Year 11 team next year, so they’re really important roles within the school.

We are greatly looking forward to working with the newly formed Student Council, and the four Staff House Captains are excited to welcome new Year 10s into our House Teams.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

This October we’re having a spooky build up to Halloween and each week’s book of the week will follow the theme of monsters and mystical beings.

This week’s book is recommended by one of our Year 10 students. She is currently working her way through The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and was very enthusiastic about the first book, The City of Bones.

In this gripping fantasy novel, Clary Fray begins to see things around Manhattan. Vampires, werewolves and demons! Clary is drawn towards a group of demon hunters and through them she discovers the dark side of New York City.

Join Clary as she discovers her destiny as a Shadowhunter, half human, half angel. This book is bursting with romance and danger. Once you start to read, you’ll get addicted!

My name is Eleanor Wragg and I’m in Year 11. Last year I completed my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and I am currently doing my Silver. The award consists of the Physical, Volunteering and Skill sections with the Expedition being completed near the end of the school year. Each section allows students to utilise their skills in communication, team work and organisation. Students will also be taught how to use a compass, effectively use a map, plan routes and write route cards.

During both Bronze and Silver, I chose to do the same activity for my Physical and Volunteering sections. For my Physical section, I’ve chosen to improve my technique in defensive skills during hockey matches. This is also helping to increase the strength in my knee, as I suffered an injury which impacted this. My volunteering focuses on my love of sport and I have chosen to return to my primary school to help out with their after-school netball club. This has helped me improve my confidence, as well as my ability to lead a group of people, while revising the rules of the game. Finally my skill for my Bronze award allowed me to delve into one of Britain’s most loved and treasured services – The Ordnance Survey – by completing a project surrounding its history. After going to Iceland in February I have decided to complete a project about the geography of this amazing country for my silver award. A skill should always be something you have a real interest in and a passion for; this can be anything at all, in my case geography.

Expeditions combine my love of maps, camping and the great outdoors as well as working with my friends. Doing these walks helps you to work in a team to successfully complete routes and learn the basics of fending for yourself. Even if the weather’s awful it is still a lot of fun. By doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, I have learnt invaluable skills which I can carry through with me the rest of my life.

WOW. What a week for sport at LHS. In five days we have competed in 13 fixtures.

On Monday a combined Year 10 and 11 girls football team took on Hinckley Academy beating them 1-0. The goal was scored by Belle Rostron after she took on most of the team, to then strike the ball with conviction into the back of the net. Another 5 fixtures followed, but the boys found Thomas Estley too strong. Our boys were magnanimous in defeat and showed excellent resilience throughout the games.

Tuesday saw the Year 9 girls netball team win their pool and progress onto the play offs which will be held next week. They will be joined by the Year 10 girls, after they too beat Thomas Estley on Thursday, to progress onto the play off rounds. Year 7, 8 and 11 were all in contention, but didn't win their last pool game.

Rugby continues to assert its dominance on the local area with Year 8 beating their local rivals Princethorpe 50-35 on Thursday. Strong performances from Jamie Talbott and Isaac Young Dorey helped. This followed a strong performance on Wednesday against Market Bosworth school where Lutterworth were again victors.

Year 7 rugby played Ashlawn School on Saturday morning beating them 12 tries to 3, with excellent performances fromElliot Slay and Archie Gamble. They received their first defeat of the season, after narrowly losing to Market Bosworth on Wednesday by 1 try.

Girls rugby was well attended on Thursday, as they prepare for their tournament on Monday of next week at LRFC, with Mr Wheatcroft and Miss Randon.
