Kannada Rajyotsava
School Highlights
The School celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava on 1st November 2016. Students and
staff actively participated in this celebration. The festivities began with Director
Br. Dhanraj Swamy hoisting the state flag, which was followed by the rendering of
the state anthem by the attendees. Mr. Prasen Moudgal (S3, EIE) briefed the
crowd about the history and importance of Kannada Rajyotsava. Following this,
Mr. Shivappa addressed the gathering, discussing the achievements of Kannadigas
in different streams at national and international forums.
Sankhya, the Mathematics Club, hosted MatMode on 3rd November, 2016 at ASE-B. The event witnessed a
turnout of over 340 students.
Contestants were allowed to participate in teams of 2. The participating teams were briefed about the rules by
Mr. Abhishek E. (S5, CSE). Participating teams were provided with a question paper comprising of 30 questions
and the teams which answered the maximum number of questions in the least amount of time were declared the
winners. The questions comprised of various topics ranging from high school algebra to advanced mathematics.

Tech Quiz
The Quiz Club in association with IEEE conducted a tech quiz on the 3rd of November, 2016 in the campus.
Enthusiastic students participated in teams of two and three. The teams answered questions ranging from gadgets to
famous companies and their founders. Questions regarding famous personalities like Nikola Tesla and Thomas
Edison were also posed to the participants.
The quiz ended with many students expressing their interest in similar future endeavours by the clubs. The
culmination of the quiz also prompted a healthy discussion among the students on various technologies and
gadgets.
Entrepreneur Café [E-café]– The Introduction
The School hosted the introduction of Entrepreneur Café on 3rd November, 2016. The event was
conducted by the Amrita Centre of Entrepreneurship [ACE].
Entrepreneur Café is a world-wide organization, founded by Dr. Nikhil Agarwal, CEO of Innovations, Govt of
Andhra Pradesh, in 2014, comprising of more than 35,000 entrepreneurs. E-café executes the concept of the
exchange of ideas over a cup of coffee. A group of entrepreneurs come together on a week-day for a cup of
coffee, and enriching conversations flow along with the beverage. E-café opened up Campus Clubbing
programs in March, 2016, to cultivate the concept of self-employment and this event marked the induction of
E-café into the Amrita Centre of Entrepreneurship activities.
Mr. Sharath Nair, Vice President, E-café Campus Clubbing, introduced the gathering to E-Café; throwing light
on the origins and the functions of the non-profit organization. He stressed the notion of "Doing it by
ourselves" as the prime step for a successful entrepreneur. Mr. Sharath impressed his audience with interesting
stories and modern ideologies. Mrs. Anjali Gupta, Global director of Campus Engagement, E-Café, briefed the
gathering about the expectations from the E-Café Campus Clubs and the different activities lined up for the
campus discussions. Mr. Uday, Chair of E-Café Advertising, and Mr. Arun, the Director of Marketing at E-
Café, motivated the audience with their inspiring success stories.
E-Café plans to hold interactive bi-monthly sessions, in the campus, to enhance the entrepreneurship skills of
the student community through conversations over coffee. The event concluded with the establishment of a
student core-committee that would function as the point of contact between the E-Café management and the
campus. The core team shall implement the plans and report to the central management. The session made
everyone truly believe that a lot of things can happen over a just cup of coffee.

Inter-Amrita Sports Tournament

The fourth phase of the 2016 Inter-Amrita Sports tournament was held in the Ettimadai campus on
the 5th, 6
th and 7
th of November, 2016.
The Bengaluru Campus performed spectacularly in the field of Athletics. Ms. Ashmita Ganguly (S3, EIE) of
the girl's team bagged gold in the 100 m and 200 m races. She also set an impressive NMR (New Meet Record)
in the 100 m race. Ms. K. Ramya (S5, ECE) was awarded the 3rd position in the 800 m race. Ms. M. Logeshni
(S1, ECE) finished first in the 1500 m race. The ASE-B's Girls' team consisting of Ms. Ashmita Ganguly (S3,
EIE), Ms. Meghana Sai (S5, ECE), Ms. Sravya (S7, EIE) and Ms. S. Ganpathy (S1, EIE) secured the second
position in the 4 x 100 m relay.
Mr. K. Naveen Kumar (S5, ECE) secured the first place in the 100 m race and the second place in the 200 m
race. Mr. G. Satyagopal (S5, ME) finished second in the 400 m race. Mr. Mohit Dhaker (S7, ECE) set a
NMR and bagged gold in the 800 m race. Mr. R. K. Ashwin (S3, EIE) set a NMR with his outstanding
performance and finished first in the 1500 m race. Mr. Dinesh Kumaran (S5, EIE) was awarded the second
position for 5 km and the 3rd position for the 10 km race. Our boys' relay team secured silver in the 4 x 100 m
relay. The team consisted of Mr. K. Naveen Kumar (S5, ECE), Mr. G. Satyagopal (S5, ME), Mr. V.
Yuvanesh (S5, ME) and Mr. Mohit Dhaker (S5, ECE). Mr. D. Basheer (S7, EEE) was awarded the third place
in both the Shot put and Discus Throw events. Mr. V. Manikanta (S7, EEE) bagged silver in event Javelin
Throw.
All contenders participated with zeal & enthusiasm and made this phase of the tournament a grand success.
ASE-B performed well in the fourth phase of the tournament and the three NMRs (New Meet Record) set are
notable achievements.
Raaga, the Music Club hosted 'More Than Strings', an improved version of the first edition held in 2015 on 8th
November, 2016 at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru. The acoustic band event witnessed a turnout of
8 bands and an encouraging audience of over 300.
Mr. Aditya Krishna, Secretary, Raaga (S5, CSE) and Ms. M. S. Shivani (S3, ECE) addressed the audience and
discussed the rules of the contest. Each band, consisting of 3-5 members performed for 8 minutes. The judg-
es for the event were Mr. Raghavendra Ravikiran, Asst. Prof., Dept. of ME and Ms. Deepa K. Narayan, Asst.
Prof., Dept. of English.
The audience witnessed popular melodies presented in a truly unique fashion, with genres ranging from
Qawwali to Tollywood. Mellifluous renditions by the participants truly made the competition a memorable
one and the bands 'Soulful Rhythm' and 'Gravity' emerged joint winners. Bands 'Nemesis' and 'Kaleidoscope'
emerged first and second runners-up respectively.
The event culminated with the former Secretary Ms. Lalita Amruta (S7, CSE) and Mr. Girish Nair (S7, CSE),
the former Joint Secretary of Raaga presenting melodious music and reliving their memories of the previous
year.
More Than Strings
Smriti, the photography club of ASE-B,
conducted a hands-on workshop on ‘Basic Light
Room’, post-processing software that edits and enhanc-
es photos.
The event was conducted on the 9th of November,
2016. The Secretary, Mr. D. Gowtham Reddy (S5,
ME), and the Joint Secretary, Mr. Kartheek D. (S5,
CSE), explained the basics of the tool with myriad
examples.
The event received enthusiastic participation from
around 70 students who set out to learn the software
and was a grand success.

Fest, held on the 10th and 11
th of November, 2016 re-
ceived an overwhelming response.

th November dawned bright for the 1532
students from over 47 reputed institutions in & around
Bengaluru who set out to enlighten themselves
through myriad contests and fun games. Delegations
from schools of renown like Delhi Public School East,
Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions, The Amaatra
Academy, BGS National Public School, National
Academy for Learning, Harvest International School,
to name a few were in attendance.
Director Br. Dhanraj Swamy declared Aarohan'16
open to immense applause. Events like
'Mathementum Contour', a test of aptitude and
acumen; 'Olympiad', a gauge of technical skill;
'Aashubhashan', a paper presentation event and 'iQ-
The Tech Quiz' brought to the fore the knowledge of
participants and judged their ability to apply the same.
'TechWizz' required mental acuity and ingenuity, 'De-
Cipher' involved decoding and circuit rigging, 'Tech
Lock Holmes' prized critical thinking; and 'Wall-E' was
an assessment of survival skills. 'The Day After To-
morrow', an international space settlement event,
'Remix', a programmer's palace, 'Robo Relay' and
'BotWars', insightful interpretations of robotics,
'Rickety Links', an obstacle course where presence of
mind is essential and 'Castle Wars', a strategy-filled
combat scenario encouraged innovation for technical
excellence.
'Project Exhibition' witnessed the unravelling of im-
mense creative talents, and exhibits on themes like
energy conservation and alternate sources of energy
featured prominently in the minds of the audience.
Exquisite exhibits ranging from organic dyed clothes
and Milcho Plastics to cost- effective irrigation systems,
disaster management robots and solar cities coalesced
to make the Project Exhibition a success.

‘BLR’ Workshop Aarohan’16
'AutoExpo' was an array of exotic and showroom bikes
including Royal Enfield and the Bullet 500, 1995
model. The BMW Bike and the Tiger Triumph
served as show-stoppers and evoked awe in all
attendees. Special exhibits by squads from the Madras
Engineering Group (MEG) & Centre, Bengaluru
including a mock-bomb defuse and bomb shifting
demonstration and exhibits of INS Ganga and other
warships by the Naval wing of National Cadet Corps
(NCC) mesmerized the attendees. An exciting rally
around the campus by the MEG group and the bikers
received great appreciation.
Amrita School of Engineering also hosted 'TechExpo',
'MathExpo' and a workshop on glider making under
the banner of Aarohan'16 to introduce students into
the diverse world of engineering. Fun Events like
'Laser Tag', 'Tic Tac Toe Go', 'Wizard Locks' and
'FEFA' were popular with students. Br. Dhyanamrita
Chaitanya graced the valedictory ceremony and dis-
tributed the prizes. Delhi Public School, Bengaluru
East bagged the overall championship trophy.
With the passing editions, Aarohan has been
improved quantitatively and qualitatively, and today,
the overwhelming response of thousand five hundred
plus students signifies Aarohan’s optimum growth.
This platform, that has laid the matrix of the technical
world for school students, will continue for years to
come.

Wizard of Locks
School Highlights
IEEE-WIE Student Affinity Group at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru organized a fun game
for school students, as a part of Aarohan'16 on 10th - 11
th November, 2016. The game named “Wizard of
locks” was organized as a mini treasure hunt in which key for the locker to be found based on some clues.
The dedication and devotion of the whole organizing team gave fruitful results. The event was heartily
accepted by the kids and around 300 students became a part of it.
The untiring efforts put-in by the student members of the IEEE WIE, Student Affinity Group at ASE-B was
truly laudable.
'Rolling Frames', a short film making competition was organised by EPIC, the movie club on 12th
November, 2016. The contest was aimed at bringing out some of the best talents in the field of movie-
making.
The event commenced with Mr. Dinesh Kumar G., Secretary, EPIC (S5, ME) addressing the gathering. Each
team was given a 6-minute limit and could choose its own theme. The competition received a total of 12
entries which were judged by Dr. Veeresh Kumar G. B., Associate Professor, Dept. of ME.
'Clown', directed by Mr. Vishnu M. (S3, ME) got the first place while 'The Mech', directed by Mr. Saketh (S3,
ME) won second place.
The event culminated with the participants taking away a better understanding of the direction and production
Rolling Frames-Short Film Making
Smriti, the photography club of ASE-B,
organised a photo-walk near the Bannerghatta
National Park on 13th November, 2016, with the theme
'Wildlife'. 65 students turned up with their
photography equipment, eager to learn the tricks of
the trade. The organising team, led by the secretary,
Mr. D. Gowtham Reddy (S5, ME), and the Joint Sec-
retary, Mr. D. Kartheek (S5, CSE), taught the budding
photographers the technical aspects of clicking a
photo. The walk was a success, with the participants
sharing useful insights with each other.
JIDO, the Industrial Automation club, hosted a talk
on 3D Printing on 15th November, 2016 at ASE-B.
The talk was delivered by Mr. S. Sanjeev Kumar, Asst.
Sales Manager, Monotech Systems Limited, and was
followed by a live demonstration of the working of a
3D Printer.
Mr. Sachin Pullil (S5, ME), Secretary, JIDO,
welcomed the gathering to the event. He then invited
on stage Mr. Sandeep Koundinya, Asst. Prof., Dept.
of ME to felicitate Mr. Sanjeev Kumar.
The first part of the session was a lecture on 3D
Printing, namely, the technique, applications and
technology used to implement it. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar
briefed the audience about Rapid Prototyping, which
is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a
prototype of a product, and its role in the
manufacturing of the product. He then explained that
3D Printing is one of the most popular techniques for
Rapid Prototyping. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar showed the
audience many videos on the different types of 3D
Printers available in the market and their respective
applications. Finally, he explained to the students the
3D printing services that Monotech Systems offers. He
spoke about how 3D printing can be used to create
prototypes of machine parts and how final year
Engineering students can make use of this
technology in their B.Tech. project.
The second part of the session was a live
demonstration of the functioning of a 3D Printer.
Mr. Sanjeev Kumar had brought with him a 3D
Printer on which he printed a circular object so that
students could observe how a 3D Printer works. He
also brought with him several small objects that he had
printed prior to the session, such as various gears, a toy
fan, a kidney and a scale model of a villa. Mr. Sanjeev
Kumar explained to the students that the products of
3D Printing are of two types: ones that only have
sufficient strength to be used as physical models, and
ones that have adequate strength to be directly
implemented as a machine element.
After the talk, Mr. Pullil invited Mr. Prashanth B.N.,
Asst. Prof., Dept. of ME, on stage to felicitate the
guests. The vote of thanks was then proposed by
Mr. Pullil.

School Highlights
A talk on 3D printing
Dance for Throne, an inter-department dance compe-
tition was held by Narthana, the dance club on 15th and
16th November, 2016. The contest witnessed the dis-
play of the best dance talents of Amrita School of En-
gineering, Bengaluru.
'Eccentrifiers', the ECE girls’ team, kick started the
event with a beautiful performance based on the differ-
ent eras of Bollywood. 'Mystic Movers', the ME boys
team, followed up with a magnetic display of power.
'CSE Angels', the CSE girls’ team, danced with poise
and elegance. 'Electrica', the EEE and EIE boys’ team,
drew the curtains on the first day with a splendid per-
formance. On 16th November, performances started
off to loud cheers from the gathered audience. A mind
-boggling stunt filled act by 'Hack A Step', the CSE
boys team elicited ovation. This was followed by a
stunning performance by 'Genfire', the EEE and ME
girls team. 'Swaggers', the ECE boys’ team put up a
fantastic show and Dance for Throne drew to a close
with a marvellous performance by
'Dancestrumentation', the EIE girls’ team.
After the performances, the judges announced the
winners to an excited crowd. In the boys category, the
CSE team, 'Hack A Step' and ME team, 'Mystic Mov-
ers 'won first and second place respectively. In the
girls’ category, the EIE team, 'Dancestrumentation'
secured first place, and the EEE and ME girls team,
'Genfire' stood second.
The event witnessed a massive turnout. The enthusi-
asm of the crowd and the celebration of dance as an
art form were factors that made Dance for Throne a
grand success.

'Science Quiz' on 24th November, 2016 at ASE-B.
Contestants were allowed to participate in teams of
utmost 3. The participating teams were briefed about
the rules of the Quiz by Ms. B. Toshitha Royan (Year
3, ECE). The quiz comprised of 15 questions which
were related to the various fields of study in Science
and Mathematics and eminent scientists and math-
ematicians.
The questions were intriguing and enthralled the par-
ticipants. Before the conclusion of the event, partici-
pants were provided with the solutions to the questions
and thanked for their involvement. The event drew to
a close with the participants having gained knowledge
of stimulating facts in the field of Science and Mathe-
matics.

The Trial

A re-enactment of the play 'The Trial' was staged on 24th November, 2016 at Amrita School of
Engineering, Bengaluru. 'The Trial' is the play, presented by students of ASE-B, which won the
first place in 'One Act Play' at the 31st Inter-University South India Youth Festival held at
Mangalore University, Mangalgangothri in January, 2016. The play was performed by
Mr. Suraj S. (S7, ME), Ms. Dotty Johnson (S7, ECE), Mr. Vivek C. P. (S7, ECE), Mr. Rahul
Joshi (S7, ME), Ms. Gayathri S. (S7, CSE) and Mr. Rony Subhash Robson (S7, ME).
The story revolved around a homosexual man and the persecution afflicted upon him by
society. The man's anguish and perseverance was depicted with elegance unparalleled. The play aimed to instil
empathy in the audience and remind them that there is always more than what meets the eye. The drama
spanned 30 minutes, and the cast and crew received a standing ovation for their extraordinary performance.
At the end of the act, Mr. Suraj S. thanked his fellow cast members, the crew who helped in organizing the
re-enactment and Mr. Vamsi (S7, EIE) who had taken charge of the sound effects. He also offered special
thanks to Mr. Naveen, the trainer of the cast, for his indispensable effort in preparing them for the
competition. The event concluded with a message to the audience, 'Before judgment is passed, understand that
there are two sides to every story'.
IEEE-WIE Student Affinity Group, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru conducted a one day
workshop titled "Save the Earth" at Renuka Secondary School to spread the importance of "Recycle, Reuse
and Reduce" under the banner of STAR (Student-Teacher And Research Engineer/Scientist) on 26th
November, 2016. The event began with an interaction with about 100 students from 8th standard who were
grouped into batches of 10 each. The consequence of exploiting the nature and the dire necessity to take part
in creating a clean future was discussed. A knowledgeable and fun craft out of scrap session included making
paper bowls with balloons, sapling holders with bottles and paper bags. Also, the kids thoroughly enjoyed
watching animated videos on 'Swachh Bharat' and 'Conservation of Energy' and asked for more such work-
shops to be conducted in future.
At the end of the workshop, brilliant ideas were pitched in by the students on how each individual can contrib-
ute in saving energy and thus saving the earth. Overall, it was a great opportunity to create awareness among
kids to maintain a clean and green earth.

Technical Clubs
Amrita Centre for Robotics and Mechatronics (ACROM) organized Sentience, a two-day event on 12th
and 13th November, 2016. The contest assessed the participants' proficiency in Arduino programming and their
capacity to apply it in common Robotics applications, and consisted of two competitions, Li-Fo and Robo
Slam. Li-Fo is a game where the teams are given a set of particular tracks on which their robots must advance.
Robo Slam is a game of strength. Two teams enter their robots into an arena and the robots collide with each
other. The team whose robot holds its ground until the end wins.
The first day of the event commenced with a welcome speech by Ms. Niveathitha Murugan (Year 2, ECE),
who introduced the judges for the event, Mr. Aashish Sebastian, Sr. Engineer, Tata Elxi; Mr. Balaji Agoram,
Project Engineer, Wipro Technologies; and Mr. Nippun Kumaar, Asst. Prof., Dept. of CSE. She also
extended her gratitude to Br. Dhanraj Swamy, Director, ASE-B, Br. Dhyanamrita Chaitanya, Dr. T. S. B.
Sudarshan, Chairperson, Dept. of CSE, and Chief Guest, Dr. Shikha Tripathi, Chairperson, Dept. of ECE for
their gracious presence. The event commenced as Br. Dhyanamrita Chaitanya waved the Sentience flag.
A total of eighteen teams registered for the event. Out of these eighteen, five teams qualified to the finals of
Li-Fo and three teams qualified to the finals of Robo Slam. The second day of the event marked the finals of
both competitions and witnessed the declaration of the winners of the competitions.
The event was a great learning experience for all.

Students Reach-Out Programme

Technical Clubs
Amrita Networking Club (ANC) conducted three more “Student Reach-Out Programme” for the
academic year 2016-17 in addition to four that was done internally. The schools that were visited are KV-1
Jalahalli, KV-2 Jalahalli and KV ASC Center, KV Hebbal on 18th October 2016, 3
rd October 2016, 30

September and 4th October 2016 respectively. Around 84 students from KV-1, 59 students from KV-2, 60
students from KV-ASC centre and 26 students from KV – Hebbal took active part in the sessions.
These events were especially organised for the 12th standard CBSE Science students to give them a practical
approach on networking and its components by using packet tracer. The events were aimed at educating the
students about the modern networking technology and its applications. Thus this helped in adding to the
prestigious “Digital India” campaign.
The events were handled by the club mentor Mr. Ullas S., who was accompanied by the club secretary
Mr. Preetham.
Mr. Preetham, the secretary first welcomed the gathering. Then Mr. Ullas took a session on applications of
networking such as Internet of Things and Cloud Computing. The Computer Networking and Devices demo
session was handled by Mr. Ullas.
The session resumed with the continuation of the demo on network components by Mr. Ullas S. The
interactive session was based on the syllabus prescribed by CBSE for +2 Computer science Board exams and
so was the questions and questions’ pattern discussed. Through these demos the students learnt to work on
packet tracer as well. The packet tracer activity helped the students understand the concepts better as it show-
cased the practical usage and the applications of sophisticated networks. This was followed by a presentation on
Communication Protocols.
Mr. Sukumaran, the Marketing manager had presented the details about our University and School to the
student and faculty.
Finally a small quiz was organised based on the sessions conducted. The events were concluded with the prize
distribution to the winners of the quiz. All the events ended on a high note with positive feedbacks from
students of all the schools and with a photo session.
The Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers
(FACE) in association with the Association for
Computing Machinery (ACM) student chapter, hosted
the event "Hour of Code" on 4th November, 2016, in
Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, with nearly
80 students in attendance. The goal of the event was to
provide students a free opportunity to learn the
fundamentals of Hyper Text Markup Language
(HTML) and Web Development. The tutorial was by
codeacademy.com.
Ms. Janani Anand (Year 3, CSE), ACM Chair, FACE,
and Mr. Anand Vasudevan (Year 3, CSE), Executive
member, FACE, conducted the event. Participants
were engrossed in the concepts of HTML and
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for over an hour. Later,
they were given the freedom to apply their newly
acquired skills and integrate it with their creativity to
make innovative web pages. The best webpage was
awarded with a prize.
After the culmination of the event, the participants
were left with a greater understanding of Web
Development and the ability to make their mark on
the World Wide Web.
Developer Weekend was conducted by the
Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers (FACE) in
collaboration with StudyOwl on the 20th of November,
2016.
The event which spanned two hours was held in the
CP Lab, Amrita School of Engineering Bengaluru
(ASE-B), and was attended by nearly 40 students. It
consisted of hands on session involving "Technology of
the week - Chat Bots", taught and demonstrated by
Mr. Prashanth Reddy, StudyOwl. Mr. Jaydeep
demonstrated the operation of a Bot.
A Chat Bot (short for chatter robot) is a type of
conversational agent, a computer program designed to
simulate an intelligent conversation with one or more
human users via auditory or textual means. The
session discussed the static and dynamic types of
responses of a chat bot. The platform ChatFuels was
used to create Bots.
The attendees learnt a lot about Chatbots as a user
friendly tool to help people find information. The
event encouraged the students to develop their Coding
Skills. Mr. Sanket M. Bhat, Secretary, FACE (S5,
CSE) then delivered the vote of thanks.

Amrita Center for Cyber Security organized a one day Cyber Security meet in association with Cysinfo
Cyber Security Community on 19th November, 2016 in Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, India. The
CSE Forum-FACE helped in the smooth conduct of the event. The event involved talks on various topics
including Malware Detection using Machine Learning, Introduction to ICS/SCADA security, POS Malware
and Image (PNG) Forensic Analysis, Malwares used in Cyber Attacks to name a few. The meet witnessed
participation of members of Cyber Security Community and also students and faculty members from Amrita
School of Engineering, Bengaluru.

Invited Talk on ‘Importance of Software Engineering’
A talk on the Importance of Software Engineering was held by the Department of CSE on the 9th of
November, 2016. The invited Speaker was Professor Chris Price from Aberystwyth, UK. Professor Price
researches the application of qualitative and functional reasoning in the automation of intelligent design analysis
and diagnosis, working with companies such as Ford, Jaguar, Fiat, and BAE Systems. The talk emphasized the
challenges in the Software Industry considering the types of failure that have caused major software incidents.
The main thrust of Prof. Price's work is in using model-based reasoning to assist Engineers performing design
analysis tasks. His research is carried out in the Advanced Reasoning Group at the Aberystwyth University.
Students of B.Tech., M.Tech. and faculty members of the Department of CSE attended the lecture. The
Professor spoke about Software Engineering and its importance in the present day Economy. He also talked
about the applications of Software Engineering and the negative consequences of its improper implementation.
The Professor's narration of his personal experiences garnered interest. Insights into Engineering as a vocation
were also offered by the Professor, who discussed the bountiful opportunities available and the local
community in Wales.
ICPC Training Session
A two-day training camp was organized on 19th and 20
th of November 2016 at Amrita School of Engi-
neering, Bengaluru campus. The training was held for the teams selected for ICPC 2016 Asia Amritapuri Re-
gional Final which will be held on 22nd
and 23rd
December, 2016. Br. Anand, the Regional Director for ICPC
along with the ICPC coordination team from Bengaluru campus organized the camp. Previous finalists, skilled
and experienced programmers handled the training sessions. Mr. Balaji, Mr. Bipin, Mr. Vibhav were among
the few trainers. Around 15 participants attended the camp.

Videotronics
The Forum organized its second Videotronics session on the 7th of November, 2016. The event
emulated the success of its predecessor with topics like surround sound technology, driverless cars and wireless
charging being explained with the help of interesting video clips.
The session started off at 3:40 pm with Mr. Murali Krishna, Joint Secretary, ECIF giving an introduction to
Videotronics and a presenting a recap of the previous session. Mr. R. Pradeep Reddy (S5, ECE) took the
session forward by relating the latest technology in surround sound, the Dolby to multiplexers in Digital
Systems. Other technologies like ambient energy harvesting were explained by Ms. Sritha Bandla (S3, ECE)
with the help of many thought provoking videos. The audience, which comprised of mostly first years
appreciated the presentation and were particularly interested in topics like COTA. The technology behind
driverless cars was also explained by Mr. Gopala Krishnan (Year 2, ECE) in a humour filled and enriching
presentation.
Questions were also posed by the audience throughout the session which led to a lot of debate and discussion.
The session concluded at 4.30 pm with many expressing their interest in attending the next iteration of
Videotronics.
Smart Technology Talk
Conducted three major events as a part of Aarohan’ 16 on 10th and 11
th November, 2016 in two
separate categories for seniors and juniors. The events included Decipher, Laser tag, Tech Expo & Know Your
Equipment. Decipher saw students participating in about 70 teams in each category trying to decrypt messages,
participating in a treasure hunt and building circuits as per the problem statement. Laser Tag saw the highest
footfalls with over 200 students attending. Tech Expo and Know your Equipment had students’ queuing up to

A Tech talk was organized on 17th of November, 2016 at ASE-B. The event was well received and had
over 350 students in attendance.
Mr. Gopal Krishna, Managing Director at Maxim India Integrated Circuits Pvt. Ltd. started off the seminar by
inspiring the students to dream bigger and innovate. He spoke of the factors which help in innovation and
success. The session covered topics which were of vital importance to the growth of the country, and focussed
on the issues India faces as a nation. The students were presented with a wide range of scenarios from health
care to agriculture, all of which require a great deal of technical support for sustainable growth. It was noted
that technologies like IoT could be a very viable solution to many of the problems which impede growth and
progress in our country.
The talk concluded with Mr. Gopal Krishna giving the students information about the MaxIdea contest. The
contest gives students an opportunity to pitch their ideas and projects relevant to the issues faced in India.
These projects will be pitched to entrepreneurs and other enthusiasts for implementation. Dr. N.S. Murty,
Professor, Dept. of ECE thanked Mr. Gopal Krishna for his presentation and the audience for their
enthusiasm.

2015 under the mentorship of Dr. K. Deepa has been ranked 19th in the world ranking of ‘High
Performing Student Branch Chapter 2015’and 3rd in India. The chapter has received an amount of $294
(Rs 19609/-) as award fund from IEEE Headquarters
FDP
A three day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Application of Digital Controller TMS320
F28027 for Power Electronics and Drives” was conducted on 12th, 15
th and 18
th of October, 2016. The
digital controller board provides a low cost solution to power electronics applications and digital motor
control applications. The on-chip and on-board hardware modules makes it easier to implement advanced
control techniques and their execution. This board supports the implementation of any applications using
C language which makes the development of controller faster and easier.
Mr. Arjun Yadav, Research Associate, IISC Bengaluru and Director of M/s. Conwatts Technologies,
Bengaluru was the resource person of the FDP. FDP gave an insight to the architecture of digital control
card (DCC), initialization of DCC, GPIO, interrupts and generation of PWM pulses. Configuration of
ADC and DAC and generation of different types of voltage waveforms, generation of PWM pulses etc.
with hands on lab sessions were been taught. He explained about the selection of registers for various
applications and how to write program in code composer studio for various applications.
The sessions were very interesting and informative and faculty members of EEE Department, ASE-B
attended the workshop.
Following activities were organized by IEEE PELS Student Branch Chapter of ASE-B with the
support and guidance of faculty of EEE Department, ASE, Bengaluru.

TRICTECH'
IEEE Power Electronics Society Student Branch chapter at Amrita School of Engineering had organized
“TRICTECH” on 26th of October, 2016 at Amrita University, Bengaluru Campus with the support and
guidance of chairperson and faculty of EEE department.
B. Tech. 1st year and 2
nd year students of all the branches have participated in the event. The event was
conducted in three sessions. The session started with a video on how the world will be in 2050 and how the
people should be prepared to face it. The event continued with a seminar on “Distribution of power in
transmission line” by Mr. Ajit N, M.Tech. (Power Electronics) and Mr. Suresh, B.Tech. (EEE), students,
Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru. They gave a brief introduction about transmission lines and
types of transmission lines like long, short and medium transmission lines. They also gave a short overview
of power generation and distribution of power in transmission lines.
The 3rd session of the event was a technical cross word which was conducted in batches of two. Four
batches were selected to the second round based on time of completion of the crosswords with perfect a
nswers. The 2nd round was technical quiz in which questions regarding basic electrical engineering, logos
and scientists were asked. One team is selected as winners and one as runners from the four teams
participated in the second round. The session was concluded with vote of thanks and prize distribution to
the winners.
TECHWIZZ
IEEE PELS Chapter and IEEE PES & IAS Jt Student Branch Chapter jointly organized an event called
“Techwizz” on 11th of November, 2016 at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru as part of the event
Aarohan'16. This contest procured a tremendous number of students. The first qualifier was a pen and
paper round which was called '4 pic 1 word', where in the participants in teams of four were asked to crack
the clues hidden in the displayed pictures, which led to the answer. Selection based on 'most answers in
minimum time’ resulted in 14 teams qualifying for the second round. This round was expertly designed to
bemuse the young minds and was constructed based on the concept of ‘Sudoku with a twist'. The round
tested the students’ spontaneity and decrypting skills and 4 teams were qualified for the final round. The
final level was more of a fun event with buzzer wires. The teams who made to the finals won a cash prize of
Rs.10000, Rs.7000 and Rs.5000 respectively. The competition concluded with the students expressing
their satisfaction. The hard work of the organizers made the event a grand success.

TECH LOCK HOMES
As a part of Aarohan’ 16, Vidyuth along with ACE and ANC conducted an event called 'Tech Lock Homes', on
10th and 11
th of November, 2016. This event had 3 rounds and participants in teams of three had to clear three
rounds to complete the quest. In the first round called ‘Catch-22’, the teams were given a critical situation to
which they had to come up with an efficient and yet an innovative solution.
The criteria for judgment were its uniqueness and the spontaneity that the contestants showed within a minute of
preparation time and 2 minutes for the actual presentation. The short-listed teams exhibited zealous
participation in the second round, “Impro-Wise’’, where, they had to pick up a product and market it by
enhancing its features. The paradigm for judgment was the creativity and reliability on the idea in the present day
real world scenario.
The finalists, in the crucial and deciding round, were provided with laptops consisting of locked folders.
Evidently, questions had to be ‘cr’HACK’ed’ to unlock the folders and win.
The event was igniting the young minds with great ideas and greater solutions and there was an overwhelming
response.

Seminar on “Energy Efficiency in Electrical Systems”
A seminar on “Energy Efficiency in Electrical Systems” by Mr. V. Suresh Babu, Assistant Director, NPTI
(PSTI), Ministry of Power, Govt. of India, was held on 25th of November, 2016 at Amrita School of
Engineering, Bengaluru campus.
Mr. V. Suresh Babu started his talk giving an overview of energy consumption indices pertaining to economic
growth rates. He gave a brief description of the electrical system and its various components. He gave an insight
on electricity billing, electrical load management, maximum demand control, power factor improvement and its
benefit , selection and location of capacitors, performance assessment of PF capacitors, distribution and
transformer losses. Finally, he motivated the students to join IEEE for networking with experts and to get
updated with the present technology. The session was concluded with vote of thanks and felicitation of the
speaker.

Fun Game “Castle Wars'“
As a part of Aarohan’ 16, Vidyuth along with ANC and Ingenium hosted an event named 'Castle Wars' on
10th and 11
th November, 2016. The event had a great turnout and witnessed a participation of 100 teams. It
was a 2 round event and Round 1 was a board game in which the students were allowed to form a team of
4 and play a game similar to pinball. The participating teams had 3 minutes to place the given obstacles on
the board strategically, such that, the ball which is rolled from the top of the board hits at least three of
them and passes through the gaps at the end of the board. The board contained circles with the number of
points in them and each time the ball passed through the centre of the circle the points in that circles were
added to the teams tally. At the end, the teams were asked to pick a chit which either contained extra
points or negative points which were also added to their existing points. The team with the most number of
points advanced to the next round. The students enjoyed this fun game very much and the organizers were
also thrilled by the participation.

Autodesk Fusion 360
A session on Autodesk Fusion 360 was conducted by Mr. Suraj, an intern at Autodesk, on
20th November, 2016.
Autodesk Fusion 360 is software for mechanical engineers that allow them to efficiently
design, assemble and simulate components. Mr. Suraj began with an introduction of the
various options in the toolbar of Fusion 360. He also explained the cloud rendering
option, which made the rendering process smoother.

A session on Engineering Disasters was conducted by Ingenium, the forum of the Dept. of ME on 3rd
November, 2016. The session marked the second event under the banner of Curiosus, the forum's weekly
dose of knowledge and questions.
Mr. Ebin Jose (Year 2, ME) and Ms. Harini S. (Year 2, ME), executive members of Ingenium, conducted
the session. Hindunberg airship, RMS Titanic, Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe and other such disasters
were mentioned. The scientific reasons behind these occurrences and the flaws in design were discussed
in depth.
The session ended with a summary of precautions to be taken while designing and a round of questions
for the audience.
Introduction to Automobiles
The student chapter of the Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE) in ASE-B organized a workshop
'Introduction to Automobiles' on 3rd November, 2016. Varied topics of interest, such as types of chassis,
classification of cars, engine basics, turbochargers and superchargers were discussed at length by Mr. V.
Sai Varun, Chairperson, Mr. R. Ajith, Secretary, Mr. Hari Venkatesh(Year 3, ME) and Mr. Abhemanyu
(Year 3, ME). The workshop was held in the interest of enlightening students about the diverse field of
Automotives.
Introduction to BAJA and Go-karting
The SAE student chapter of ASE-B organised an event 'Introduction to BAJA and Go-karting' on the 21
st
of November, 2016. The event witnessed an overall participation of about 30 students.
The gathering was addressed by Mr. V. Sai Varun (S5, ME), who discussed BAJA, an annual all-terrain
vehicle racing competition hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), prior to explaining the
achievements of the institution at the previous editions of the competition.
The event, which was held to recruit new members into the team, saw the participants interacting with the
hosts and soaking in knowledge of the features that go into making the race cars.
The event culminated with a question-answer session and resulted in an in-depth understanding of the
working structure of BAJA for all attendees.
