Sri Krishna Janmashtami Celebrations

Sri Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated with a splendor at Amrita

School of Engineering, Bengaluru on 10th August, 2011. The celebrations were

marked by exemplary stage performances by students that included Meera

Bhajans, Gopika Dance and a play “Kishen Vs Kanhaiya”, staging the theme -

Cynicism Vs Opportunism. This was followed by a speech by Mr. Vishwanath, a

second year student, on pragmatism in Bhagavad Geeta.

To celebrate the true spirit of Lord Krishna, His playfulness and

mischievousness, Dahi Handi and Tug-of-War were organized by Chetana, the

sports club.

M.Tech. Orientation Programme

The classes for the new M.Tech. batch of 2011-2013 commenced on

10th August, 2011. A brief orientation programme was conducted to give an

overview of the structure and the rules & regulations of the programme.

Independence day

Independence Day was celebrated with a patriotic fervour at Amrita

School of Engineering, Bengaluru. The day began with flag hoisting by the

Correspondent, Br. Dhanraj Swamy, and was attended by the Associate Dean,

Dr. Rakesh S.G., faculty and the students. Following this, the Students Council put

up a cultural show to solemnize the event.

The event began on an auspicious note with an invocation to the

Gods, followed by a variety of cultural events. A group consisting of second, third

and fourth year students captivated the audience with their chorus of “Neme

Indians”, a Telugu song. Another group sang “Ussele Ussele”, a popular Malayalam

patriotic song. Patriotic spirits were roused when a group sang “Suno Gaur Se”, a

fiery Hindi Song. A play by second and third year students conveyed the plight of

common man during the struggle for independence. Ms. Jyotsna, a second year

student delivered a speech on Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Finally, students from the

School Dance Team performed a ballad depicting the struggle for Independence.

The day ended with a patriotic fire kindled in every heart and a

resolve to ensure that the sacrifices made by our forefathers were not in vain.

Musical Night

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, became a conclave for all

the music lovers on 23rd August, 2011 when the Music club, Raaga presented an

exclusive Musical Night. It featured highly laudable band, solo and group

performances. The evening showcased varied performances of all music forms; be

it devotional, melody or metallic. The performers and organizers were appreciated

by one and all.

Kalakriti 2011- Talent Hunt

Kalakriti 2011, the talent search for the first years, was held on

24th August, 2011. The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp and an

invocation to Lord Ganesha. The guests on the dais included Dean –

Academics Dr. Nagaraj B.N., Associate Dean Dr. Rakesh S.G. and Chair-

Amritadhara Ms. Jyotsna G.S.

Ms. Jyotsna welcomed the audience and formally inaugurated

Kalakriti. Ms. Nandini Mathan, the Student Council President, introduced

Kalakriti to the audience, and invited the outgoing President and Vice

President on to the stage to share their experiences. Following this, the

Secretaries were formally entrusted with their duties by their predecessors.

The opening ceremony showcased performances by the senior

students. The performances included two group dances by the school dance

teams and a mime put up by the school mime team. With the conclusion of

the cultural show, Kalakriti 2011 began in earnest.

Featuring a wide variety of events ranging from singing & dancing

to sketching & debating, Kalakriti ensured that everyone had a platform to

exhibit their talents. The main stage events included solo dance, group song,

and instrumental music. In addition to these events, there was also an

outdoor event “Treasure Hunt” which had students going excitedly from one

location to another, guided by clues and volunteers.

In addition to these competitions, the organizers had also set up a

number of game stalls which ensured that every student had something to do.

Graffiti spots were put up near the venue which allowed the students to express

their views.

The annual event was once again successful in bringing out new

talent and promising more spirited participation in all future events.

8th Convocation of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

The 8th Convocation of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was held on

27th August, 2011 at Ettimadai Campus and was attended by 4298 graduands from

all five campuses. The Chief Guest, Padmashree Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, Chairman

of Atomic Energy Commission of India, in his convocation address said “The

guiding principle of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham - education for life and

education for living - blends spirituality and the ancient Indian value system with

the conventional education of today’s world.”

All graduands pledged to uphold the ideals of Amrita Vishwa

Vidyapeetham. Top students were honoured with medals and certificates. The

students of Amrita Bengaluru swept the medal tally with 33 ranks, six gold medals

and three silver medals in B.Tech. & M.Tech. category.

Gurupoornima Celebrations

The School observed Gurupoornima by offering prayers to our own

guru, Satguru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. The ceremony was presided over by

Swami Dhyanamrita Chaitanya who spoke about the need to surrender oneself to

one’s guru to experience the ultimate peace. The celebration was marked by

bhajans of AMMA sung by one and all.

Ms. Sunitha R. rejoined the Institution on 01st August 2011 after the study

leave availed for doing M.Tech. in Bio-Medical Signal Processing.

Web based tutorial on HSPICE was organized by Digipro Design Solutions Pvt.

Ltd., Bengaluru, on 23rd August, 2011 for III semester M.Tech. (VLSI Design)

students at E-Learning Hall, ASE, Bengaluru. Around 25 students attended this

tutorial. The tutorial was meant for beginners, and the students found it very

instructive in carrying out projects in the area of Analog VLSI Design. The

tutorial was arranged by Prof. S. Ravishankar.

Mr. Ganapathi Hegde delivered a seminar titled “An Efficient 3-D DWT for

Video Processing Using Distributive Arithmetic Architectures” on 17th August,

2011 in the department.

Dr. P.R. Vaya has been selected as an Editorial Board Member for International

Journal of Engineering (IJE). The IJE Editorial Board makes its valuable

the Embedded Systems Lab. The session was conducted by Electro System

Associates.

M.Tech. (VLSI) students batch 2009-2011 at ASE, Amritapuri on 22nd July, 2011.

Embedded System Lab :

The Embedded System Lab has been equipped with the following kits:

25 ARM 7, one each of ARM 9, ARM Cortex-M3 kits with peripherals like

Stepper Motor, DC Motor, Traffic Light Control, A/D Converters, LCD display

and Elevator Interface.

The Lab has also been equipped with 25 CPLD, 25 FPGA SPARTAN 3, four

SPARTAN 6 and one VIRTEX 5.

An Image processing DEV-kit 8000 and Embest University package have also

been purchased. These kits will provide advanced support to the teaching

and research activities.

Dr. Rashmi M.R. joined the Department as Associate Professor on 03rd August,

2011. She has obtained her Ph.D. for the thesis titled “Sensorless Vector

Control of Induction Motor Drives” from Sathyabama University, Chennai in

November 2010. She has four international publications, one national journal

publication, one international conference and six national conference papers

to her credit.

Vidyapeetham. She will be working under the guidance of Dr. B. Venkatesh,

Head, Department of Mathematics, ASE, Bengaluru.

CISCO NETWORKING ACADEMY

Cisco Academy conducted the online competition “NetRiders-11” on 11th

August, 2011. Among 98 teams from all over India, 7 were from Amrita,

Bengaluru campus. The team from ASE, Bengaluru, represented by Ms. Nisha

Unnikrishnan (ECE) and Ms. Lavanya M.S. (ECE) stood fourth in this national

level competition.

“Ingenium” – The Mechanical Engineering Department Forum, organized a talk

on “Applied Engineering” by Mr. Varun Sharma B.V., Application Specialist,

Altair Engineering Inc., Bengaluru. This event was held on 03rd August, 2011 in

E-learning hall and was attended by faculty and students.

The forum also arranged for a video presentation on Engineering Connect –

AIRBUS – 380 / F1 Car Design on 10th August, 2011.
