A X Y is a decorative novelty item, invented in 1963 by British accountant Edward Craven Walker. The Y consists of a bolus of a special coloured wax mixture inside a glass vessel the remainder of which contains clear or translucent liquid; the vessel is then placed on a box containing an incandescent light bulb whose heat causes temporary reductions in the density and viscosity of the wax. The warmed wax rises through the surrounding liquid, cools, loses its buoyancy, and falls back to the bottom of the vessel in a cycle that is visually suggestive of pāhoehoe X, hence the name. The Ys are designed in a variety of styles and colours.

4. WHICH TERM?

The first use of the term is generally attributed to Signetics in 1972. Signeticspublished some Z literature as the result of an inside practical joke, which is frequently referenced within the electronics industry, a staple of software engineering lexicons, and included in collections of the best hoaxes.

The concept is most often used as a joke or a euphemism for a failed memory device.

The datasheet was created "as a lark" by Signetics engineer John G ‘Jack’ Curtis and was inspired by a fictitious and humorous vacuum tube datasheet from the 1940s. It was seen as "an icebreaker" and was deliberately included in the Signetics catalog.

There have been thirty Mars mission attempts over a period of forty years now. In one such turn of events, the mission launched as X became the first to be headed by a public university, University of Arizona, in NASA history. This lander, used in 2008, is the modified Mars Surveyor 2001 Lander (cancelled in 2000) along with several instruments from both that and the previous unsuccessful Mars Polar Lander mission (1999). Lockheed Martin which built the 1999 lander, had kept the nearly complete lander in an environmentally controlled clean room from 2001 until the 2008 mission was funded. Reflecting the treaty between the British and French governments that led to Xe's construction, the name Xe is from a French word Xe, , which has an English equivalent, X. Both words mean agreement, harmony or union. The name was officially changed to X by Harold Macmillan. At its French roll-out, in late 1967, the British Government Minister for Technology, Tony Benn, announced that he would change the spelling back to Xe. This created a nationalist uproar that died down when Benn stated that the suffixed "e" represented "Excellence, England, Europe and Entente (Cordiale)".

In some medieval encyclopedias, X’s Y is mentioned as the actual Y of X or elephants who perished in mortal combat.

In reality, X’s Yis actually a resin harvested from various plant species such as Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus rotang, and Pterocarpus. Its main feature is the red pigment that lends it the name X’s Y.

In the 18th century, X’s Y was used as a varnish for Italian violin makers. Moreover, there was a recipe for a toothpaste containing X’s Y. In India, it has been used in ceremonies for face painting or as a red varnish for wooden furniture.

Chemist William Henry Perkin, then eighteen, was attempting to create a cure for malaria in 1856. An unexpected residue caught his eye, which turned out to be the first aniline dye – specifically, Perkin's M. Perkin was so successful in marketing his discovery to the dye industry that his biography is simply entitled M. However, as it faded easily, the success of M dye was short-lived and it was replaced by other synthetic dyes by 1873.

The 1890s are sometimes referred to in retrospect as the "M Decade", because of the characteristic popularity of the subtle color among progressive "artistic" types, both in Europe and the US.

During World War II, Japan invaded rubber-producing countries as it expanded its sphere of influence in the Pacific Rim. Rubber was vital for the production of rafts, tires, vehicle and aircraft parts, gas masks, and boot. In the US, all rubber products were rationed; citizens were encouraged to make their rubber products last until the end of the war and to donate spare tires, boots, and coats.

Earl Warrick and James Wright, both researchers independently discovered that reacting boric acid with silicone oil would produce a unique material with several unique properties. The non-toxic material had a very high melting temperature. However, the substance did not have all the properties needed to replace rubber.

What was thus invented?

It it now widely thought that L originated when an early ancestor of eukaryotic cells engulfed a Proteobacterial cell. Instead of digesting the bacterium completely the cell derived energy from it and the proto-L was able to survive and reproduce in this environment.

Eventually much of the the endosymbiont's (the bacteria's) genome became incorporated into the host cell and became what we now would know as L.

They originated from an endosymbiotic process involving a bacterial cell. They remain very similar to bacterial cells. At some point in the past having these endosymbionts as part of a proto-eukaryotic cell probably conferred some fitness advantage.

Apparently, P is really popular with scientists. Not only are wasps named after her, there is also an entire genus of ferns that share her sobriquet. The ferns are the most hilarious, especially given the reasons.

The lead researcher said that one of P’s song is incredibly empowering to disenfranchised. Congress alone probably makes most scientists feel like small, picked-on nerds. But it was also P’s performance at the 52nd Grammy Awards that ensured she would finally be lionized as a plant. Apparently, L’s dress looked like the bisexual reproductive stage of a fern, and her “paws up” salute resembled the way a fern extends its leaves. The botanists even made it so that a DNA sequence in the ferns actually spells out P(all letters capital).

First predicted to exist in the 1960s, the V had been long sought after by scientists. And a detection was finally made in 2015, thanks to CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Made of ____(a number) quarks – the smallest subatomic particles we know to exist – the V could help explain exactly how ordinary matter is made. It hints at a new type of matter, with the particle existing beyond our current knowledge of subatomic physics.

There is still much work to be done on the V. But there's little doubt that this was one of the major scientific breakthroughs of 2015.

Engineers In Japan have come up with a novel new way to encourage safe driving among citizens.

The design was refined by engineers at the institute in Sapporo, and the team has previously worked on tech to detect dangerous road surfaces.

This new method also elimates the need for a particular car accessory if the driver drives in accordance to lane and speed regulations. Optimal output of design is achieved when the car windows are closed, so ambient ____ cannot interfere.

X is the Internet-based practice of researching and broadcasting private or identifiable information (especially personally identifiable information) about an individual or organization. The methods employed to acquire this information include searching publicly available databases and social media websites (like Facebook), and social engineering. It is closely related to internet vigilantism and hacktivism.

The term X derives from a slang which, according to Wired writer Mat Honan, was "an old-school revenge tactic that emerged from hacker culture in 1990s."

6 Fictional elements, found in various forms of entertainment.

+10 for each, +60 for full house.

1.

A is a well-known in-joke in scientific circles, and is a parody both on the bureaucracy of scientific establishments and on descriptions of newly discovered chemical elements.

In 1991, Thomas Kyle (the supposed discoverer of this element) was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize for physics, making him one of only three fictional people to have won the award.

Another variation on the same joke is B. A commonly heard description describes it as "having a negative half-life", in other words the more time passes, the more massive B becomes; it only grows larger and more sluggish. This refers to the ____________ system, which is generally perceived as a system in which ____________ procedures accumulate and whatever needs to get done takes increasingly longer to get done.

3.

X can refer to any substance needed to build some device critical to the plot of a science fiction story but which does not exist in the universe as we know it. A hull material that gets stronger with pressure in the film The Core (2003) was nicknamed X.

X can also refer to any rare but desirable material used to motivate a conflict over its possession, making it a MacGuffin . X can be used in a disparaging context (e.g., "That idea is silly; you'd need X wires to hold the planet up!") or a hypothetical one ("If one were to build an X shell around a black hole's event horizon, what would happen to the material piling up on it?").

4.

According to the comic books, the components of the alloy are kept in separate batches - typically in blocks of resin - before molding. X is prepared by melting the blocks together, mixing the components while the resin evaporates. The alloy must then be cast within eight minutes.

The word is a pseudo-Latin neologism based on a English noun and adjective (and the derived adjective ). The adjective has long been used to refer to the property of impregnable, diamondlike hardness, or to describe a very firm/resolute position. The noun has long been used to designate any impenetrably or unyieldingly hard substance. The noun and the adjective occur in works such as Prometheus Bound, the Aeneid, The Faerie Queene, Paradise Lost, Gulliver's Travels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Lord of the Rings, and the film Forbidden Planet , all of which predate the use of X in Marvel's comics.

Z was produced first in 1879, by Constantin Fahlberg, a chemist working on coal tar derivatives in Ira Remsen's laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University. Fahlberg noticed a sweet taste on his hand one evening, and connected this with the compound benzoic sulfimide on which he had been working that day. Fahlberg and Remsen published articles on benzoic sulfimidein 1879 and 1880. In 1884, then working on his own in New York City, Fahlbergapplied for patents in several countries, describing methods of producing this substance that he named Z.

At first, scientists believed this strange phenomenon to be a direct result of tiny red algae that might be present in the water.

Still, with expeditions being rather rare due the location being situated in one of the most remote and geologically exotic places in the world, nothing conclusive was reliably proved. That is until, in 2003, one study proved that the redness is due to the high amount of iron oxides, sulfates and salt present in the water.

Furthermore, the saltiness of the water led scientists to a conclusion that there must be free flowing salt water trapped somewhere beneath. And as it turns out, there was. Hidden 400 meters deep beneath, a lake of unknown size containing extremely salty water was discovered. Located several kilometers from the outflow, the lake had been completely isolated from the outside world for almost two million years.
