THE R2 billion Kouga Wind Farm at OysterBay will now blow over 300 GWh per annumof clean renewable energy to the nationalpower grid.
The KougaWind Farm, consisting of 32 tur-bines, was officially opened on September 4byMEC forEconomicDevelopment, Environ-mental Affairs and Tourism Honourable Sa-khumzi Somyo. TheKougaWindFarmgener-ates enough electricity to supply approxi-mately 50 000 average South Africanhouseholdswith electricity annually andmit-igating over 270 000 tons of greenhouse gasemissions annually.During the wind farm’s two-year construc-
tion period, more than 1 000 temporary jobswere created through its engineering, con-struction and procurement contractor, Nor-dex. The project also made use of the servicesof 15 SMEswith the focus on the local commu-nity.A key focus of Kouga Wind Farm is uplift-
ing the communities in which the wind farmis involved, and the neighbouring communi-ties of Sea Vista and Umzamowethu are theprimary beneficiaries with the Kouga WindFarm already investing about R1.7 million inhealth, child care, food security, education, sport, transport and infrastructure develop-ment.MECSomyo,whowas on site for the official
opening and cut the “Circle of Friends” rib-bon, said the national renewable energy pro-curement process required increasing com-mitments towards local content and the East-ernCape could becomea centre of sustainableenergy manufacturing and supply for the Af-rican Continent.“If the Eastern Cape canmanufacture luxu-
ry vehicles of the highest quality, then given
the right support and conditions, there is nodoubt that the province can diversify furtherin the manufacturing of energy systems andcomponents. I look to the Kouga Wind Farmand all the esteemed people here today to joinhands in working towards the realisation ofthis vision,” said MEC Somyo.Christopher Clarke, managing partner of
Inspired Evolution and chairman of the Kou-ga Wind Farm, said: “We identified Red Capand the Kouga Wind Farm early in 2010 be-cause of the credentials of its developmentteam, compelling wind resource, strength ofthe project advisors and counterparties, andthe robust project management approach tominimising technology and execution risks. This positions the wind farm well for successin the future to ensure it delivers favourableinvestment returns to sustain its positive de-velopment impact obligations over its 20-yearlife, and we are very pleased to be a part ofit.”This wind farm became a benchmark for
community ownership with the Kouga WindFarmCommunity Development Trust havinga 26% shareholding. In addition, it is also anexample of best practice in terms of environ-mental stewardship with the Kouga WindFarm being instrumental in the establish-ment of the Greater Kromme Stewardship, aconservation initiative.Lukhanyo Ndube, CEO of the Kouga Wind
Farm, said neighbouring communities werealready enjoying the benefits with R1,7 mil-lion invested in community projects from theconstruction phase to date, including thecompletion of aR300 000mobile clinicwaitingfacility consisting of awaiting room, two con-sulting rooms and an ablution unit to servethe Umzamowethu community.Projects are chosen tomeet the needs of the
community and the plans of the local munici-pality, based on key focus areas that wereidentified - namely education and literacy, skills development and training, healthcareand transport, aswell as information technol-ogy and communication.Projects include providing Sandwater Pri-
mary School in Umzamowethu with a solarpowered computer lab consisting of 20 com-puters for learners and one for the teacher, and purchasing the ABET curriculum andtraining for the staff at The Rainbow School
for the Disabled in Humansdorp.Upcoming projects include assisting the
Healthy Mom and Baby Clinic in Jeffrey’sBay, supporting the Sea Vista Clinic in StFrancis Bay and the Sea Vista PrimarySchoolKitchen, theupkeepofTalhadoHaven, improving the infrastructure at SandwaterPrimary School, providing EnvironmentalManagement Training to community mem-bers, and giving eight tertiary education bur-saries to current Grade 12 learners to studyat a tertiary institution of their choice.

PATENSIEresidentswere furiousafter beingwithoutwater for 11 days due to severalwaterpipe bursts and broken pressure valves.According to furious residents they were
without water since September 5 and tookthematter to their localDAward councillor,Jan Joy three days later.“The Democratic Alliance (DA) referred
the matter directly to municipal manager
Sydney Fadi, who explained that it was aburst pipe and that the matter was re-solved,” says Joy.“Since then the water was off most of the
time and there has been little pressure. Theworkers claimed that another pipe hadburst, and that they turned the water off forthe reservoir to fill up first.”Six days later, residentswere still without
water. Water was being carted into Verge-noeg and Noorshoek. According to Joy, thedelay is due theKougaMunicipalitywaitingon a pressure valve from a service providerwhich is only due by September 16.“The fact that residents canbe leftwithout
water for 11 days is completely unaccepta-ble,” says Joy. “It is unacceptable that it takesthemunicipality such a long time to establish
the actual problem and then having to waitfor delivery. Efficient service delivery, espe-cially as far as water is concerned, is a neces-sity.Water is life, and even sewerage systemscannot operate without it.“Patensie has just gone through a major
sewerage infrastructure upgrade, and sim-ple problem identification and repair of suchan elementary issue cannot be tolerated.”

HE was an adventure-seeking and sport-lov-ing young man until a fall left him paralysedand facing his greatest challenge yet – to walkagain.
Thanks to grim determination and the un-wavering support of friends and family, andeven those unknown, that dream is now be-coming a reality. Alwyn Uys will be leavingfor Australia on September 25 where he willreceive treatment from Ken Ware, thefounder of NeuroPhysics Functional Move-ment Centre, which recently saw John Ma-clean - a paraplegic ironman athlete - walkingafter 25 year in a wheelchair.“I long to get back on my feet to be able to
walk on the beach or just to walk up a flightof steps. It is the little things in life that youmiss the most once they are gone,” says Uysfrom Patensie who was left paralysed fromthe chest down after a car accident ninemonths ago.“Doctors said that I would never walk again.
However, I chose not to give up on my dream to
walk again. Today, I can move my legs a little- something thatwas not even thought possible.”The accident that changed his whole life,
happened near Kirkwood on December 13while he was on his way to visit a friend. “Itook my eyes off the road for a second. Theleft frontwheel veered of the road and I jerkedthe steering wheel to try and get back on theroad. I lost control of the car and I swervedacross the road. As soon as the car went off theroad it flipped and I was tossed out on the pas-senger side,” says Uys. Due to two shoulderoperations the previous day and his arm beingin a sling, he was not wearing a safety belt.“I woke up next to my car where someone
found me shortly after the accident. I tried toget up, but my whole body was cold and Icould not move my legs. That was when Iknew I was very badly hurt. I had broken myback and cracked my neck,” says Uys.“My life took a complete turnaround. Being
an active person, it was my worst fear not be-ing physically able to dowhat I love: exercise, sports andmountain hiking. I had to findmy-self and rediscover who I was. I had to learnto overcome this challenge. My faith has
grown immeasurably and I do not think Iwould have been so close to God if this hadnot happened. I had two options: accept thisnew debilitating lifestyle or do all that I canto walk again. I chose the latter of course.”In an effort to raise the necessary funds to
go to Australia and receive the therapy, Uysestablished the Alwyn Uys Foundation. What started as a foundation for one per-
son, soon evolved into something much big-ger. “There are thousands of people in a simi-lar situation andwho do not have the resour-ces to attend this type of therapy, thus havingalmostno chanceof everwalkingagain.Onceon my feet, I would like to continue with thefundraising projects and bring this uniquetherapy to South Africa,” says Uys.“We are also looking into the option of
opening up a special area at a fitness centrein Jeffreys Bay to make this therapy morecommercially available.According to Uys, he truly has a passion
to help others as he is fortunate enough tohave the necessary resources at his disposal.“Once I am able to walk again, I will ventureto get into more public speaking to motivate
and inspire people. People need to see whatis possible in life.”For more information, visit the Alwyn Uys
Foundation Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Get-Alwyn-back-on-his-feet-1570950156520813/timeline/.

So gesê, so gedaan. Hy het op 3 Septembersy eerste tree na die operasie gegee.“Die pyn is weg,” sê hy met ’n aansteek-
like glimlag.

WITHTourism andHeritageMonth both being celebrated in Sep-tember, it only makes sense to visit the only lighthouse in theKouga, and some of the shipwrecks whose remains can still beseen on the coastline.
OurKouga coastline claimedmany vessels over past centuries, and the Seal Point Lighthouse was completed in 1878 in orderto assist vessels passing the second southernmost point of Africa.TheLighthouse, standingat 27,75m, is the tallestmasonry light-
house in South Africa and still fully operational, although with-out a lighthouse keeper on the premises. It was originally equipped with a 3-wick burner and had an
intensity of 15 000 candelas, providing a single white flash every20 seconds. In May 1906 it was changed to a petroleum vapourburner, increasing the intensity to 120 000 candelas, and the char-acteristic changed to one flash every 5 seconds, as it is today. Theintensity of the electrical bulb however is now that of 2 750 000candelas. The lighthouse boasts amodern radio beacon, a fog sig-nal and fog detector.Close to Seal Point Lighthouse, the wreck of the Cape Recife
lies a few hundred metres to the west. The accident occured inFebruary 1929, and many pieces of the wreck can still be seenin the gully during lowtide where she was grounded. Her propel-ler was salvaged by founder of St Francis Bay, Leighton Hulettusing his fishing vessel Moby Dick in 1979.Further west, on the Wild Side, lies the boiler of the HMS Os-
prey, a Royal Navy warship that was returning from China. Thishappened during the night of 29/30May 1867. The Osprey carrieda crew of 83 of whom only Stoker George Devreaux drownedwhilst trying to bring a hawer from ship to shore. Today the HMSOsprey’s anchor beautifies the entrance of Cape St Francis. On 22 July 1870 the Dutch East Indiaman, the Nederlandsche
Vlagwas lostwhen 12 crewmembers drowned. In September 1870a sailing vessel, Liza&Alicewrecked, but no liveswere lost. Verylittle remains, but parts are still visible in the rock pools at lowwater. Other ships lost in the small area were the Berwick on30 June 1827, Auguste on 22 January 1858, the Runnymede on 6February 1866, the Milford on 12 October 1875, the British Dukeon 13 November 1880 and the Derby on 27 April 1895.A shipwreck still standing tall on the coastline is Meng Yaw
366, a Taiwanese trawler that came ashore at Brakkeduine, westof Seal Point on 2 June 1989. Some 850 tons of frozen chokkaaboard her was lost, and her bunker fuel pumped ashore andburnt off to prevent pollution.
WIN! WIN! WIN!To stand a chance to win an unforgettable breakaway, take a photo of any historical site in the Kouga region and send
it to [email protected] before noon on September 30. Thephoto must be accompanied by a short description of the specificsite, the date the photo was taken and contact details of the send-er. All photos received, will be uploaded onto our Facebook Page- Kouga Express Newspaper.

THE beauty of Jeffreys Bay is legendary, but the town’sattractions include more than the beach, the best right-hand waves, mountains and farmlands. There is anotherside to Jeffreys Bay that visitors are immediately con-fronted with upon arrival, but often do no more thandrive by in uncomfortable dismay.
Yet, the outskirts of the town hold many hidden gemswaiting to be discovered or rediscovered. The many visi-tors, and locals, who do embark on a township tour willin all probability find the experience to be themostmem-orable and profound of their visit to Jeffreys Bay as theywill discover that the dilapidated appearance belies a vi-brant and vital local culture, (Ubuntu) humanity, historyand fortitude.I recently had the opportunity to enter the caverns of
two local townships, Pellsrus and Tokyo Sexwale – leav-ingmewith a better understanding of its unique culture. The township tourbyJBayAdventures offers a greatwayto explore the vibrant informal settlements and interactwith local residents. Visiting a traditional healer, ‘shop-ping at a local spaza shop’, looking upon the graves ofthe first residents of the area and enjoying a ‘cold’ oneat a shebeen offer ideal opportunities to savour the fla-vour of township life. The three-hour tour takes you on foot through the
streets of Pellsrus to Tokyo Sexwale - all while the veryknowledgeable tour guide,MzoxoloGoodman, gives a ho-listic understanding of the past political history with thepresent struggle for social and economic freedom felt bythose in township communities across the country.Goodman, whohas been a tour guide for over eight years, does not planhis trips beforehand. He tells it as the differ-ent places speak to him.Tour groups are kept small so that visits are intimate
and encroachment on residents’ homes is minimal.Expect to be pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity of the
place. This is reflected in daily life as people go about theirbusiness. Where else but in a township would you expectto find a metal shipping container cleverly renovated toreveal a thriving hair salon? This is where you will getto see a salon client energetically tapping her foot in timeto a lively song booming from the radio. At the same timeher hairdresser bops alongwith her, all while dexterouslymanoeuvring and sewing in her lady’s weave.
Our first stop was at the grave sites of some of the firstfishermen in Jeffreys Bay. According to Goodman someof the graves date back to the early 1800s. “They foundtheir last restingplace close to their first love andpassion– the sea,” says Goodman. I have driven in Duineweg inPellsrus many times, but never before noticed the whitecrosses among the overgrown bushes behind the highfence on the side of the road.Just a fewkilometres further, lie thedilapidatedgraves
of some of the first inhabitants of Pellsrus, which is nearimpossible to see beneath all the rubbish and overgrowngrass and bushes – a truly sad face. William Bell and hiswife Johanna (born Ferreira) was laid to rest here in 1939and 1953 respectively. Their closest neighbour is BerthaHannah who was born in 1868 and died in 1922.After a quick visit to the local spaza shop and pre-
school, we headed off to the traditional healer – onlyknown asMadlamini – in Tokyo Sexwale. While we weresitting in her small room, sunlight streamed through thesmall cracks between the wooden planks that make upthe walls, illuminating roots, plants and herbs hangingfrom the roof andwalls, and flecks of dust lazily spinningthrough the air. Here we were introduced to the ‘magic’of Tokolosh Salt that keeps evil spirits away and Answerthat will make your husband forgive and love you againafter you have had a heated disagreement. Then thereis also Storm – a root of which you insert a small pieceunder the skin of your one hand. If a bad person is ap-proaching you, your arm will start to vibrate – warningyou about the approaching danger. You will also be ableto hit the person with the same arm – veering off the dan-ger. If there is bad feelings between you and your neigh-bour you can wash your face withMpendulo and all willbe forgiven, or if you are speeding under the influencemake sure you have somePhuncoka Bemphethewith youtomakeyourviolations invisible to the traffic cops if theyshould pull you over.Appreciation for her time and sharing of her know-
ledge is shown by saying very loudly Gcamagu and plac-ing an amount as told to you by the ancestors on theground before you leave. On route back, we stopped at a local tavern - Shipo’s
Tavern - where we not only enjoyed something cold, butalso made new friends. This is a fabulous tour for any visitor or local wanting
to really understand and experience the past, the presentand to get a glimpse into the future of Jeffreys Bay.
Making new friends at Sipho’s Tavern: (from left) Theresa(Swawel) Ruiters, Jeanette du Toit (General Manager atFountain Mall), Lyiza Mpengesi, Ingrid Ruiters, Janina Braun(visiting from Germany) and Nadine Scheepers (MarketingManager at Fountains Mall.
Some of the oldest graves can be found in Pellsrus. However, one needs to look carefully as they are nearimpossible to see beneath all the rubbish and overgrowngrass and bushes – a truly sad face.PHOTO: MONIQUE BASSON
