AS the causewaygoes frombad toworse andresidents of ParadiseBeach are fed differentrumours, the question is: does anyone knowwhat is happening?A badly maintained causeway has now
been rendered impassable.Residents of Paradise Beach, who were
promised an improved road in Februarythis year using a nice budget that was allo-cated for this improvement, now face yet an-other month of long diversions and dirtroads. The conditions of the roads out ofPar-adise are shocking - nothingwas done to im-
prove them as was promised. What happened to the causeway being
open by the end of June - empty promisesfed to rate payers at their meeting? What happened to the money? What hap-
pened to the contractor?More importantlywhatwill happen to the
residents of paradise beach who have to en-dure increased petrol consumption, wearand tear on vehicles that have to use dirtroads daily?Who is going to step up and sort it out?
- Running out of patience

Drie, ses, 12 maande, of miskien sobinne 2 jaar as ons gelukkig is.
- DAWyk 14, P.W.Butler

AFTER more than two weeks in which nowork could be carried out on the causewaylinking Paradise Beach and Aston Bay, Envi-ronmental Affairs will once again be ap-proached to seek permission for the openingof the mouth to ensure that repair work cancontinue.
It is hoped that the process will be finalisedthis week.According to DA councillor Brenton Wil-
liams, there has been a lot of speculationabout the progress on the causeway.“Residents have even taken the law into
their own hands and re-opened the causewayduring the weekend,” said Williams.According to Williams, there is no truth in
the rumour that the contractor haswalked offthe job and will not be returning.“When it becameapparent that the estuary
was filling up with water from recent rains,as well as a solstice high tide that breachedthe closed mouth, a decision was made thatit was pointless to continue to pump water
out of the small coffer dams so that workcould be done on the culverts,” said Wil-liams.“The agreement was that the causeway
would be opened and work would recom-mence once Environmental Affairs hadgranted permission to open the mouth orwhen the mouth naturally opened to the sea.On the day the contractor was tidying up thesite in order to re-open the causeway, hisheavy vehicle damaged one of the old culvertsthat needed to be replaced.“The broken culvert then resulted in the
causeway being closed as it was clear that itis extremely dangerous to cross the cause-way.”The contractor remains committed to fin-
ishing the repair work and there is no needto be concerned, said Williams.“The only reasonable solution to the prob-
lem is for the mouth of the Seekoei River tobe opened and for some water to be drainedfrom the estuary.“In the meantime, it must be appreciated
that residents are using the causeway entire-ly at their own risk.Without an engineer con-firming that it is safe, the municipality can-not take the chance to allow people to use thecauseway.”John Wiehan, chairperson of the Paradise
Beach Neighbourhood Watch, says the alter-native gravel road is a nightmare and nearimpassable. He is concerned about the rea-sonable access to emergency and medical fa-cilities.“A fewmotoristshavealreadygoneoff the
road when it is very slippery and muddydue to rain. Since the closure of the bridge, the road has only once been adequatelygraded. Most commuters from Paradisehave over the past months sustained dam-age to their vehicles; ranging from relative-ly minor to near write-offs. Residents areconsidering bringing a class action suitagainst the municipality, who is responsi-ble for providing an acceptable, safe alter-native route during the upgrading of thecauseway.”

WHILE InFood Coffee Society in Jeffreys Bayis brewing up yet another champion for theRegional Barista Contest, the reigning East-ern Cape champion - placed fifth overall-might lose his title to his fellow barista.
Aspiring champion barista, VictorMatinen-ga who has been working at InFood for twoyears alongside colleagues Percy Chickwira,Belinda Ruiters and Charles Ngwaroi - whohad all previously entered the Eastern CapeBarista Championships and came out victori-ous - will be entering the annual Regional Ba-rista Contest in Port Elizabeth on July 25.He will be mentored by defending champi-
on Ngwaroi, who is currently placed first inthe Eastern Cape and fifth in the country. When Ngwaroi first started working for In-Food two years ago, he knew nothing aboutcoffee. But just as he now is going to keep an
close eye onMatinenga, he twowasmentoredby other Eastern Cape champions from In-Food; Chickwira and Ruiters.Ngwaroi trained after hours on his tech-
nique and presentation. It took him sixmonths of practice to create the perfect brewfrom InFood’s chosen magic bean.According to owner Jayne Davies, after in-
tensive research he designed a unique signa-ture drink, called the Patensie Glu wein, usingoranges from the region and spiced coffee. “Hemade history when he managed to come fifthin the country. Charles is the first EasternCapebarista to gain a place in the nationals. He hassucceeded in putting the Eastern Cape on theregional coffee map. He has also set a very highstandard for the third barista, Matinenga.”Matinenga said: “Following in my col-
league’s footsteps there ismuch pressure, butit is a very good platform to grow as a personnot only at work, but also in the outsideworld. Success doesn’t come cheaply and it is
a blessing working under them.”Victor is confident that he will bring home
the gold and possibly do better than his col-leagues. According to Victor training shouldhave taken three months, but it only took himamonth. “I believe I ama fast learner,” he said.”It takes a world class barista, a profession-
al and someone who knows what he is doingto succeed at the championships.”The Regional Barista Championships re-
quires each barista tomake a total of 12 bever-ages: 4 cappuccinos, 4 espresso, and 4 signa-ture drinks created by the barista. Imagine living right on sea
water canals that are totally
safe for swimming and boating,
are teeming with fish, there is
no need to barricade your doors
or burglar proof your windows
and your children can roam the
streets on their bikes or just run
around. A pipe dream or could
this be a reality in Jeffreys Bay?
After surviving the meltdown
caused by the MasterBond
bankruptcy in the early 1990's
the Marina Martinique has
stood the test of time and has
come into its own as a premier
choice for a residential
property.
With seven new plans passed
for new houses to be built in the
past month, and another five
houses currently being con-
structed, Marina Martinique
has bucked the downward
property trend and is now a
sought after investment for
locals and holidaymakers alike.
In the boom of 2006/07,
waterfront stands were selling
at R1000 per m2. The recent
sales of vacant stands on the
water are selling at an average
of R 1 366 per m2 which means
that during this recession where
other properties showed a
decrease in price, Marina
Martinique has shown a 20%
increase in selling price.
Marina Martinique is managed
by a Home Owners Association
which maintains high standards
with good corporate governance
that allows Home Owners to be
confident in the development.
TheMarina is essentially amini
municipality run within a

All the roads were resurfaced in
Phase 2 of the development
during 2012, while many trees
were planted all over the
Marina. Maintenance work has
been done in the canals and the
pumps, ensuring that the canal
water is clean and safe to swim
in and to boat upon.
A new bridge was also built over
the canals, replacing the old
drawbridge that once upon a
time opened to allow boats to
pass through.
TheMarina is responsible for its
own security with the result that
the last housebreaking occurred
24months ago.
Open water swimming is well
established at the Marina and
the development hosted the
2011 South African open water
Olympic trials that saw world
class swimmers like Natalie du
Toit, Jessica Roux and Troy
Prinsloo fight it out to represent
their country in London 2012.
A major coup occurred late in

return the area to its former
glory.

FOR almost two decades, big-hearted ani-mal lovers have been giving the four-leg-ged friends of the Kouga a second lease onlife.
But now, they are in desperate need ofhelp to carry on this selfless work. The SPCA Assisi in Humansdorp has
been helping the animals in the Kouga ar-ea for close to 20 years. In the last yearalone they have been a refuge to 631 dogsand 351 cats that were surrendered bytheir owners, as well as 220 stray dogs and130 stray cats. They also seize animalswhoare injured,
malnourished or maltreated. A living ex-ample of this is their ‘mascot’ José. Joséis a calf the SPCAhas been caring for afterhe broke his back leg. “He embodies whatthe SPCA stands for: prevention of crueltyto animals,” says SPCA spokesperson, Jes-sica Naudé.According to Naudé, most animals are
surrendered when their owners are una-ble to afford veterinary bills. “This posesa big problem for the SPCA,” she says.
“While animals are being surrenderedfor this reason, the SPCA’s veterinarybills per month is a staggering R35 000 toR40 000, with most of the money beingspent on spaying and neutering ani-mals.”To combat escalating veterinary bills,
the they are currently in the process ofraising funds for an on-site clinic with res-ident veterinarians.“The clinic will look after animals com-
ing into the shelter, and provide medicalcare to owners who cannot afford to taketheir animals to the see a veterinarian,”says Naudé.The SPCAmainly raisesmoney through
their various charity shops and charitydrives. Theywill also hold a red carpet dayin the near future and an SPCA bizarre inDecember to raise funds for the on-site vet-erinary clinic.Naudé says that volunteers arewelcome
at the shelter, as they always need peopleto brush and play with the animals. To become a volunteer, or for more in-
formation, contact the SPCA at 0 042 2952814 or phone their emergency number0 073 121 8963.

After struggling at school due to insuffi-cient support systems in place at normalschools, Jan du Plessis from Jeffreys Bay isnow a firm advocate of inclusive education.“Children with vision impairments shouldbe encouraged to go to normal schools. Pro-viding there is support from the school andparents,” says Du Plessis who obtained histechnicon diploma at the age of 42 after fiveyears of study .“My life did not turn out badly and people
who are visually impaired should not sit ina heap and feel sorry for themselves,” saysDu Plessis.Recently Du Plessis and his wife and big-

deal with the same problems, but do not evenknow each other,” says Du Plessis.“I realise that there might be many more
people in the Jeffreys Bay area who sufferfrom vision impairment and who needhelp.”He says that people lack knowledge about
vision impairment. “Parents with vision im-paired children do not know how to handletheir children and children do not know howto handle their parents.”Du Plessis wants to launch a support
group in Jeffreys Bay for the visually im-paired. He says that the group will consistof discussions about what people can learnfrom others experiences, to create a supportnetwork. The group will also serve as a voice for the

Laetitia Ferreira, owner of Loerie Pro-cessed Veg situated in the Gamtoos Valley, was honoured at the Businesswomen’s Asso-ciation regional Business Achiever Awardsheld in Port Elizabeth in June. She wascrowned the winner in the entrepreneur cat-egory, proving that hard work and persever-ance pays off.Loerie Processed Veg is a fruit and vegeta-
ble processing plant that supplies whole andprocessed produce to a variety ofmarkets, in-cludinghospitals, housewives, and thehospi-tality and catering industries.Ferreira says that 13 years ago she realised
that small farmers, and those in the sur-rounding areas, could only transport theirproduce to a market near Port Elizabeth.“Which was often to the detriment of thefarmers, as the transporting costs regularlyoutweighed the value of the produce,” shesays.Ferreira decided to start her own business
thatwould cater for farmers and supply freshbulk produce to businesses in the area. Since
opening in 2000, the business has grown fromone room to an establishment that utilises400m² of land. She now employs 21 peoplefrom the surrounding area.“I take pride in the fact that my business
supports the local community through jobcreation. Further training is given to staff toensure their growth as individuals,” saysFerreira.“Outstanding quality and service is the
main goal for Loerie Processed Veg, and, be-cause of the business’s high standards, it hasretained many of its original customers. Nu-merous steps are followed to ensure the endproduct is as fresh and hygienic as possible.”The company is involved with various
charities and community work. An organisa-tion close to her heart is the Organ DonorFoundation. Her husband, Denro who was afarmer in the area, suffered from a heart con-dition that saw himwaiting for a heart trans-plant. “The transplant never came and hepassed away in 2011,” says Ferreira.Loerie ProcessedVeg is also involved in lo-
cal community projects - including the Loe-rieheuwel Primary School and the Loerie-heuwel Crèche - by providing them with allthe vegetables they need to make meals forthe children on a daily basis.“I enjoy being involved in community
work, and if I am going to help a communityI would rather help improve those aroundLoerie,” says Ferreira.
