HE is a man with a car - and a mission.

Pensioner Frans Kersop aims tomake a dif-ference in more ways than one: while fulfill-ing physical needs in the community by dis-tributing food, he also takes the time to buildrelationships - hoping to show recipients theyare loved and valued.Kersop is one of 50 volunteers who are cur-

rently assisting the SOS Project in JeffreysBay to deliver food to between 80 and 100 de-serving people in Pellsrus, Ocean View andTokyo Sexwale every Wednesday.According to Kersop, one of the first volun-

teers, the SOS Project started delivering itsfirst bowl of soup to sick people, residents suf-fering from Tuberculosis, cancer, and HIV/Aids, as well as to destitute elderly persons.“These people did not want to take their

medication on an empty stomach as it madethem feel even worse,” says Kersop. “Westarted with one vehicle per week and nowhave six vehicles delivering food everyWednesday. The soup we offer is homemadeand donated by the ladies of the Dutch Re-formed Church and the Catholic Church, aswell as from various individuals. We relyheavily on donations, and any contributionfrom community members - no matter howsmall - is highly appreciated. The more soupor ingredients we receive, the more familiesin need we can help.”For Kersop, this is more than just deliver-

ing food to the less fortunate. He knows every-one by name, their history and their dreamsfor the future. At residents’ househe takes thetime to talk to them - to find out how they aredoing, to encourage themand to pray for themwhere welcome. He believes that everyone deserves to be no-

ticed and treated with dignity and joy. Eachrecipient has a special place in his heart andhas become a valued friend over the years.Kersop, who delivers food to 12 families, feelsheartbrokenwhen they are sad, he rejoices in

their victories and encourages them as muchas possible - using God’s word as his guide. The SOS Project has also been running a

soupkitchen from theVGChurch inPellsrussince July 2013. They provide soup twice a

week to the el-derly, homeless, unemployedand sick people. For more information or toget involvedwith the project, contact Hannet-jie van Oudts-hoorn at 076 781 3912 or send anemail to [email protected].

WHETHER it is on land or sea, Jeffreys BayNational Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) StationCommander Rieghard Janse van Rensburgdoes not shy away froma challenge – not evenif the challenge is self-induced and requiresrunning for more than 100km across uneventerrain.

Being as fit as a fiddle andwith severalmar-athons behind his name, Janse van Rensburgis raising much-needed funds for the JeffreysBay NSRI, Station 37, one running step at atime. On theweekend of February 26 to 28, hewill

tackle South Africa’s only 100 mile (160km)trail run – the gruelling Addo Elephant TrailRunwhichwill take him through the vast andbeautiful wilderness of the Addo ElephantNational Park – in order to raise R12 000 toequip NSRI crew members with AIS Man-Over-Board devices.“Being a sea rescue volunteer is verymuch

like running a 100km or 100 mile trail run,”says Janse van Rensburg. “You get the privi-lege of experiencing some of the world’s mostbeautiful places, running in remote and awe-inspiring areas often far fromany form of civ-ilisation.“Even though the best preparations and

training cannot prepare you for what youmight face. This is very much the same as be-ing a NSRI volunteer. However, there is onebig difference. On these ultra-endurance trailruns, youknow the race organisers are track-ing your position via Satellite and GSM ena-bled GPS trackers. It would be incredible ifevery sea rescue volunteer could have that

samepeace ofmindwhile out on a rescuemis-sion on a stormy night in the middle of theocean.”According to Janse vanRensburg, these de-

vices (AIS Man-Over-Board) cost in excess ofR3 000 each and equipping, for instance, thecrew for their station’s 5.5m rescue vesselwill amount to R12 000 plus.Janse Van Rensburg will dedicate his par-

ticipation in the Addo Elephant Trail Run tohis newly established Don’t go Overboardcampaign, as well as his 100/100 campaignwhich was started in August this year. Uponhis completion of the 100km Ultra Trail CapeTown Mountain Trail Run in October, heraised a whopping R10 000 which was used tobuy 20 jumpsuits for the volunteers of Station37.To support this worthy cause, and stand a

chance to win a 48 inch Samsung Smart FHDLED TV sponsored by True Technologies, simply donate R100 or more to the Don’t goOverboard campaign. To pledge your supportin the form of a donation, visit GivenGain athttps://www.givengain.com/actiist/143653/.Donations can also be paid into the NSRIFund Raising Account, ABSA Heerengracht, branch code 506009, account number1382480607, account holder National Sea Res-cue Institute, reference 5015, and your cellphone number.

BODY STRESS RELEASE

X1QXF5MH-171215-KG-mfbhen-back

MONIQUE BASSON

AFTER three Body Stress Release (BSR) ses-sions, I am convinced this complimentarytechnique has set my body back on track andbanished stress and tension for good.

This yearwas a tough one forme. Studyingafter almost eight years of working and theunavoidable tension that comes with beinga journalist, I knew that my body was takingsome strain. As a journalist, I also spend anawful amount of time at my desk.Other than bad posture, especially when

sitting, and a lot of slouching, I have had mydose of accidents: I rolledmy vehicle, jumpedoff a house roof believing I was Superman, and fell out of trees and off jungle gymswhengrowing up. These are just a few I amwillingto admit to . . .However, until I went for Body Stress Re-

lease, I was unaware of just how stressed andunhappy my body was. But after three ses-sions with Elmi Brink I am as right as rainagain - for now anyway.BSR is the brainchild of two previous

SouthAfrican chiropractors, Gail and EwaldMeggersee, who developed the technique aft-er many years of research into stress and thehighly negative effect on the body. However, as Elmi, a BSR practitioner in

JeffreysBaypoints out, BSR isneither amed-ical treatment nor an alternative therapy. “Itis a complementary technique which helpsthe body to heal itself by releasing stored ten-sion,” says Elmi.“As a BSR practitioner, I enable the body

to heal itself by locating the precise areaswhere the body is stressed, such as along thespine, in the neck and head, even the but-tocks and hips.“I use the client’s body as a biofeedback

mechanism, and by my applying light andfirm pressure to the key areas, the body isactiva-ted to release the stress.”

BSR is most commonly used to counteractthe physical effects of stress, such as lowerback pain, neck pain and headaches. It evenaids digestion andhelps to reduceheartburn.

How it worksAs I approached her office, her loyal ‘secre-tary’ Katrien, welcomed me with a waggingtail while accompanying me to the door. Before we started, Elmi explained exactly

what BSR is and how it works. A session gen-erally takes between 45 minutes to an hour- it all depends on the severity of your condi-tion and the level of stress your body is carry-ing.

According to Elmi, she starts off by doingthree releases. “Ideally, the second sessionfollows three to four days after the first ses-sion, and the third one week later. More ses-sions could be required. I usually recom-mend clients to come back for regular main-tenance releases.”You are fully clothed during the session,

you can even keep your shoes on.Elmi also took notes onmymedical history

and general lifestyle, including any pain Iwas experiencing. This helps to pinpoint are-

as where the tension may be stored. Then it was time to get onto the bed.As I layonmystomach,Elmimovedbetween

my feet and my back. The reason for this? “Byyourmoving the feet in a very specific way, thebiofeedback of the body shows,” says Elmi. This procedure is called the monitor.”Elmi then did a series of body stress tests

on my back, pressing lightly on variouspoints in specific directions along my spine.“It there is stress present at a specific site,

this slightly irritates the body in that area, after testing, which reacts with tiny with-drawal reflex of the one foot,” says Elmi.“This response lasts for several seconds, whichallowsme to carryout themonitorma-noeuvre and observe a small, temporaryshortening of one leg. If there is no stress atthe site tested, there will be no muscular re-sponse.”She repeated the process on my buttocks,

hips, my shoulder blades, neck, shouldersand the base of my head.

The verdictThewhole process is sonon-evasive, that youwonder if it will really make a difference. But, it certainly has an effect. After the first session I have not had a ten-

sion headache. After the second session, I ex-perienced a warm-tingling feeling over byback for several hours, but this is not unusu-al. It just shows that the process is working. After three sessions the pain in my lowerback is gone - and has not returned - I havefar less heartburn and I am sleeping better.Elmi pointed out that I will have to work

on my posture if I do not want to come backtime and again. This includes core strengthexercises and to takenotenot to slouchwhen-ever I am sitting, especially when workingon my computer or when reading. For more information, contact Elmi Brink

at 079 602 1212 or visit www.facebook.com/el-mibsr.

THE young and incredibly talented DJ and pianist - Sophie Francis- will be playing to an expected 20 000 people at St Francis Bay’sfamous New Year’s Eve Bash, The Ruins.

Sophie composes her own tracks, working with a top produc-tion team in Europe. She is releasing eight brand new singles nextyear. Her much anticipated tracks received great feedback fromtop international DJ’s as well as Showtek and W&W.

She started developing her music when she was only nineyears old, taking piano lessons and experimenting with musicsoftware. At 16 she was noticed by one of the top DJ Producersin Europe, John Dirne aka John Christian, and worked withhim at his studio complex. Recently she signed with AlwaysManagement.

Previously known as Sophie’s Choice, she changed her nameearlier this year to reflect her love for the beautifulchilled beach town of St Francis on the Garden Route.

“We lived in St Francis Bay for six months eachyear until I was 10, before moving back to TheNetherlands permanently,” she says. “When Iplay piano letting my mind blow away, it al-ways goes back there. It has a special spacein my heart. I’ll always remember how I’dwake up in the morning, looking down atthe ocean, spotting dolphins playingaround and whales passing by. I was sadto leave South Africa and my friends.”

She was notified a few weeks ago thather original name ‘Sophie’s Choice’ wasthe trademark of a movie. “To avoid is-sues I had to rethink my name. ActuallyI’m glad that I had to do this! Because Ihad the chance to come up with my trib-ute to this special place in South Africathat means so much to me.”

Sophie’s sound is a mix of big-room,electro and progressive house. A perfectpeak time banging formula, that sets thecrowd on fire. “I love to create emotionswith my compositions, and dance musichas my heart because of the high energy andamazing feelings that it brings,” she says.

“I am so excited to be performing under my new name ‘So-phie Francis’, and coming back to St. Francis Bay - the placeI love most in the world, to play at the most important partyevent: The Ruins, main stage.”

THE Seal Point Lighthouse in Cape St Fran-cis will be reopened for tours and visits asfrom February 2016.

LouanneMostert, Marketing and Develop-ment Manager, SANCCOB Eastern Cape an-nounced this at a recent Speed MarketingSession held by the Eastern Cape Parks andTourism Agency (ECPTA) at the Summer-strand Hotel, Port Elizabeth.“We are delighted to announce that we

have just entered into an agreeement withTransnet PortAuthorities, owner of the light-house, to reopen this historical monument tothe public again aftermore than half a decadeof being inaccessible. The Seal Point Light-house, built in 1878 was recently renovated, and with some final touches to be added tothe interior, tourists will again be able toclimb the 200-odd steps and enjoy the spectac-ular view from the top of the lighthouse.”The Seal Point Lighthouse stands at

27,75m, making it the tallest masonry light-house in South Africa. Another interestingfact is that it is situated on the second south-ernmost tip of Africa, another good reason toturn off the N2! The lighthouse is still opera-tionalwith amodern radio beacon, fog signaland fog detector.

Ou-

As jy

by Hom wil gaan sit, doen dit. Hy verstaanjou pyn.

THE festive lights are up, schools are closedand the beaches are crowded with locals andvisitors.

It is difficult to believe that 2015 is drawingto a close. In a few days this year will just bea thought. Looking back at the past twelvemonths one realises there have been varioushighs and lows - some that will leave a perma-nent mark on the face of the town for yearsto come.

The year started on a dismal note withscores of holidaymakers, who traditionallypump millions of Rands into the Jeffreys Baycommunity, deserted the town after threedays of power outages when the main powerline collapsed.

Not only did many local businesses suffermajor losses as they were forced to close theirdoors while the power was out, but a fewpump stations also failed, resulting in rawsewage flooding the streets. Water could notbe pumped from boreholes, threatening thewater supply. The situation was made evenworse when beaches were closed due to ripcurrents, leaving holidaymakers with no-where to go and nothing to do.

On a more positive note, in March JeffreysBay based swimmer Brenton Williams, to-gether with six swimmers from Port Eliza-beth, became the first people to ever swimaround Cape Recife - the most South Easterntip of the African continent.

This was followed by a successful KougaExpress Cansa Shavathon during which R6650 was raised for the local Cansa branch.

Other highlights for the year include the ap-pointment of councillor Daphne Kettledas asthe new Executive Mayor of Kouga - becom-ing the first female mayor in Kouga - the film-ing of the movie Die Pro in Jeffreys Bay andHumansdorp, the highly successful JBay

Winterfest, the Global Leadership Academy’sannual Trolley Pro and Trashy FashionShow, as well as the town being a finalist inKwêla’s Dorp van die Jaar Competition.

In May, residents mourned the death of arhino cow and her calf at the hands of poach-ers at Lombardini just outside Jeffreys Bay.

Ongoing problems include potholes, over-grown erven and insufficient municipal ser-vices. Another much debated topic was thesudden resignation of former Victory Chris-

tian School principal Fanie Vermaak, who isnow opening his own school Pharos in Janu-ary next year.

This year also saw the launch of the KougaExpress Matric Dance competition and theKouga Express Christmas project.

TheKouga Express, with the support of ouradvertisers and readers, goes from strengthto strength - and 2016 will see it bigger andbetter than ever.

As the end of the year approaches and we

get ready for a well-deserved break, we’d liketo take this time to wish all our readers andadvertisers a happy holiday season. May thejoy of this season fill your home with love andremain with you throughout 2016.

This is the last Kouga Express for the year2015. The Kouga Express team will be takinga break from today and will be back at workon Monday, January 11, with our first editionout on January 14, covering the ups and downs, highs and lows that are sure to follow in 2016.

We would like to wish all our readers andadvertisers a blessed Christmas and a
