Our Open Girls Softball team competed on Monday in the Tamworth Zone Knockout and Gala Day. Our team had so much fun. While the nerves got the better of us in our first match against Nemingha, they all learned some valuable lessons. Ruby Rakus was keeping the ball in front and performing some spectacular dives as catcher. Another of the highlights of the match was the home run on loaded bases from Phillipa Cracknell. Both Mrs Cracknell and Mrs Blinman got a little excited. This spurred on the team and showed Nemingha what we could do. We got our full compliment across the plate. Nevertheless, it wasn't quite enough.

In our next round, we played Tamworth South PS. Our confidence was continuing to grow and we were so positive in our play and talk on the field. Again, we demonstrated great improvements in our batting and running of the bases. This game we won 12-8.

Following the conclusion of our games, Meika Haak, Phillipa Cracknell and Kara Johnson trialled for the Tamworth Zone Softball team. All girls performed well and they gave their best, despite a long hard day of softball. Both Phillipa and Kara were successful in their selection. Well done ladies.

I couldn't be more proud of our girls. They had a fabulous day and they never gave up. I look forward to working with these girls again. We are so lucky to have such great students at Kootingal! On Tuesday, myself and Mrs Blinman gathered ourselves together for another day of softball with the Open Boys Team competing in the Tamworth Zone Knockout and Gala Day. In the first round, our team had the bye. We took this opportunity to practise our basic skills of overarm throwing, catching and the two-handed strike while watching our prospective opponents, the winner of the match between Tamworth Public School and Tamworth South Public School. Our opponent was Tamworth South.

In winning the toss, Zepplin Goman elected to field first. This was to serve as a confidence boost for our students. They were a little nervous. Tamworth South got their first two batters home quite quickly. However, a quick succession of outs had our students feeling more confident. We went into bat, and again we were nervous. This was our first competitive game and it was taking us a little while to sort out our nerves. We were two runs down after the first innings. In the second innings, Tamworth South only got one batter home before we went into bat. At the bottom of the second innings, Kootingal was behind 4-2. The third innings proved to be our strongest. At the top of the third innings, Kootingal both pitched and fielded the strongest. The first three batters for Tamworth South in the third innings were out in quick succession, bringing to life the Kootingal team and support crew. We went in to bat at the bottom of the third innings and our first seven batters all returned home. With seven across the plate it was side away and Kootingal was in the lead 9-4. Going into the fourth innings, Tamworth South needed five or more runs to ensure Kootingal went into bat. Tamworth South got their five, but Kootingal was on a high and only needed the one run to take victory. Fielding lapses on the batting of Zepplin Goman’s big hit led to Ethan Walker running to home plate to rapturous applause. It was a great feeling for Kootingal all the while being watched by their next opponent, Duri-Currububula. This game started in a firecracker of a way. Sent in to bat, Kootingal started the way they finished their previous game with seven batters across the home plate. With seven home, we sent Duri-Currububla in to bat. It wasn’t long though and we had them out with only two home. Our team was on fire! In the second innings, Kootingal scored four runs to our opponent’s zero, and with a third innings of another seven batters making it home, it took our tally to 18 runs. We held Duri-Currububla to 2 runs, making Kootingal the winners of the Tamworth Zone! Following our game, it was time for Zepplin Goman, Joseph Lulham, Liam Jarrett and Ethan Walker to take their place in the selection trial for the Tamworth Zone team. I proudly announce all four boys were selected! Congratulations boys.

All students were exemplary both in their game play and sportsmanship. Thank you to our support crew over the past two days. Your support of our students and school is always greatly appreciated and welcomed, and our students love having someone to play to. Congratulations students and both myself and Mrs Blinman can’t wait to see what’s in store for our next game. Stay tuned community!

Good luck to our students in years 3 to 6 who are competing today in the NSW Netball Gala Day at the Sports Dome in Tamworth. Our students love the concept of a gala day, having the ability to play multiple teams regardless of the score. Thank you to Miss Magann and Miss Semmler for making this opportunity available to our students.

All the best to our students competing this week in the Tamworth Zone Cross Country at Nundle. Take your winter woolies so you’re not too cold and run like the wind. Thank you to Mrs Lawrence and Miss Warden for their organisation. Enjoy your day in your hometown Miss Warden!

Last week we commenced looking at active commuting to school. With the amount of physical activity our students are doing this week, you may well be wondering why this is still a focus. This is something that is achievable nearly everyday for our students. If brining our students to school via the family car, think about a safe spot to drop off to allow your child or children to walk the rest of the way. It may simply be as close as the start of the school block. This is a great way to build some independence while still monitoring our children’s safety as they enter the school grounds. Below is a map of possible places to drop off.

!

This week, our PBL focus is examining the expectations while using the COLA. During their PBL lesson, students will brainstorm all the different ways that our school uses the COLA throughout the week. They will also revisit the specific expectations under each of the three core value areas. These are listed on the Positive Behaviour for Learning matrix and on the signage located along the brick wall at the end of the COLA. Safe - Walk - Sit to eat Supportive - Share school equipment and use appropriately - Share space Effective Learner - Wait for teachers to dismiss you at eating time - Line up quickly and quietly at bell Mrs Warden
