As the weeks pass in Term 4 it only seems to get busier, and, while we are in the midst of emergency situations, it is all taken in our stride. Kootingal Public School was pleased to welcome Moonbi Public School, its students and staff, during their evacuation. Thank you to the parents we contacted in regards to after school arrangements for our affected children. We appreciate your time and communication during this time of emergency.

While busy trying to tie up the ends of the 2019 school year we are still planning the incoming 2020 school year. A part of this process is our Bright Stars Kindergarten Transition program. This program sets us apart from all other schools and something in which Kootingal Public School takes immense pride. I can not wait to see the student portfolios Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Knight have constructed for each child to take home as a memento of their transition at Kootingal Public School.

Good luck to our students in year 6 who are transitioning to Oxley High School in 2020, as this week your transition program commences. We know you are all looking forward to high school commencing and this is just part of the process. We look forward to hearing about your endeavours upon your return to school.

At this week’s Monday afternoon assembly, our candidates for the 2020 School Captain elections performed their speeches. Unfortunately, Layla Wilton was not able to present her speech due to being in a fire zone. All speeches are being videoed and compiled for students to watch again, with Layla’s included, and then vote immediately afterwards. Our candidates are: • Coby Hobden • Robert Hazard • Joshua Thompson • Braidy Cork • Nate Symons • Angus Frewen • Layla Wilton • Arian Hope • Mikyla Phillpott • Elloise Sharpham • Jessie Johnson • Abby Stokes Good luck to all candidates.

Well done to our captain group who led our school in the Remembrance Day service also on Monday afternoon. It is always important to ensure our children understand the importance of Remembrance Day. This year, I included the sound recording of the time when the guns fell silent in 1918 to mark the Armistice. As a school we talked about the sounds we could hear after the guns and shelling stopped and how different this would have been for the fighting soldiers after hearing such devastation for the past four years. Here is a link to the recording used during the service here.

This week our students continued their work with Dr Bricknell on the mechanics of writing. Each and every time Dr Bricknell comes to our school, the students can’t wait to work with her. She is also particularly impressed with the progress of the children. At our staff meeting, Dr Bricknell worked with staff on the preparation of the review of our English Scope and Sequence. We have a few tasks to complete prior to Dr Bricknell returning to assist in the development of a new English Scope and Sequence.

Congratulations to all students who participated in CAPERS over the weekend. Your performance was spectacular and we most certainly stood out in our fabulous costumes. I’m pleased to say all of those costumes are now washed and packaged for our next use in our costume storeroom. Thank you Miss Magann for your time, organisation and patience with CAPERS. Your professionalism is not only noted within our school but also in the creative and performing arts arena. Our students knew your expectations of both behaviour and performance. Well done! Thank you also to our staff who assisted Miss Magann over the weekend and throughout the course of the CAPERS extravaganza. I’m sure all students, and staff, had a slow Sunday with a well-earned sleep in.

This is the final week of our intensive swimming program. Our students have enjoyed this opportunity to refine their swimming skills and we are very grateful to be able to offer it to our students. Thank you Mrs Lulham for your organisation and expertise and to Miss Semmler for your assistance in the delivery of this program.

This week the focus for PBL is the expectations when using the canteen. These expectations are underpinned by the core values Safe and Effective Learners. We only had a brief introduction to this week’s focus during our Monday afternoon assembly due to time constraints. The poster for the canteen is below.

Next week’s focus will review our emergency evacuation procedures.
