Safety is important - but what constitutes safety? In the chemical industry safety is a wide and complex concept. We at Kiilto have five safety teams, who are responsible for improving safety in the areas of production processes, product stewardship, waste management, transportation and industrial safety. Each team applies their expertise in that particular field according to law and regulations.

We monitor our safety status constantly and improve it with our integrated quality-, environment- and safety system. But the system itself does not guarantee safety. Safety requires a strong commitment by all the company employees, from managers to factory operatives. Everyone should promote safety within his or her area of activity, and everyone's contribution is equally important.

What is crucial in the safety work is a keen motivation and enthusiasm for the cause - and after that follows hard work. Motivation requires understanding and positive attitude. The safety work itself is seeking information, applying it into practise and continuous learning. When the foundations are well-established, progress happens, usually slowly. But in the safety work all progress is extremely important.

For our customers, our safety work is manifested in our products that are safe to use and of recognizable origin. This builds trust among our customers; a trust in a domestic manufacturer, who carry its responsibility throughout the product's life-cycle. It also assures the customer that s/he can get all the information s/he needs on the product, its use and disposal.

When operating in the industry sector, there is a great number of important things that have to be taken into consideration. But in the end, the most important thing is safety.

Antti OK Nieminen was awarded as a forerunner in the field of adhesive chemistryThe Finnish Chemistry association granted Kiilto Oy's Managing Director, Ph.D,

adjunct Professor Antti OK Nieminen an award for his long-term and persistent

work in the field of adhesive industry and chemistry, and for contributing

cooperation among the Finnish universities.

antti OK nieminen was the first in Finland to get a doctor's degree in the field of

adhesive chemistry in 1990. nieminen wrote his doctoral thesis at Case Western

Reserve university in usa. The postgraduateship last two years and was financed

by Kiilto Oy. in 1990 nieminen's doctoral thesis was approved with the highest

degree at the university of Oulu. in his doctoral thesis nieminen examined nMR

imaging of adhesives and adhesive joints based on nuclear magnetic resonance.

The method enables examining adhesive's curing process without damaging the

glued construction.

nieminen has a wide list of publications and lectures, and in his time Kiilto

Oy has grown strongly and new innovative products are being launched on the

market one after another,

commends the jury.

Year 2011 will be

celebrated as the International Year of

Chemistry (The IYC 2011). The IYC 2011 is

an initiative of IUPAC, the International Union

of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and of UNESCO,

the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and

Cultural Organization. The year 2011 will coincide

with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize

awarded to Madame Marie Curie. IYC 2011 events

will emphasize that chemistry is a creative

science essential for sustainability and

improvements to our way of life.

The Finnish construction sector, like other business sectors in Finland, is gradually adopting the harmonized European product standards and testing methods. One of the indicators of the European standard conformance is the CE marking. Kiilto’s watertight covering kit is among the first that has now the national VTT waterproofing certificate (VTT= the State Technical Research Centre) as well as the European CE marking according to the European Technical Approval (ETA).

Kiilto Kerafiber is now easier to spreadThe new Kiilto Kerafiber contains microfibres, which make it easy to spread on the surface and the

required thickness is reached easily. Working methods and consumption have not changed: 0.6 l/m2

for walls and 0.8 l/m2 for floors. For inlets and corners Kiilto recommends Kiilto nurkkavahvikenauha

or ready-for-use reinforcements for inlets and corners. For floor gullies Kiilto recommends either Kiilto

lattiakaivo reinforcement sheet or self-adherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa reinforcement sheet.

Kiilto Kerafiber was issued the CE marking in March 2011. The new testing procedure required hard work from Kiilto’s R&D team, even though product’s formula did not

change that much.

Familiar products Although having the CE marking and improved formula, Kiilto-products can be used as before. Also product consumption has remained unchanged.

– The new Kerafiber contains reinforcing microfibres. Thanks to advanced fibre technology Kerafiber is now easier to apply on the surface than before, says Raija Polvinen, Dr. Tech. and Research Manager. The impulse for the product upgrade came from Kiilto customers and the aim was to improve working comfort of the waterproofing work, yet to keep it simple.

Two-years stretch– In Finland waterproofing membranes have always been tested as a part of a larger product system and the testing has been strictly regulated and highly reliable for over 10 years. Change to ETA-testing won’t be a big change for us, unlike it may be for other European countries.

But even then, the preparation of the required tests and the entire testing procedure with the Kerafiber waterproofing kit took two years.

– We worked closely with VTT in preparing the testing methods. Our laboratory is now approved as an ETA-testing laboratory by VTT, says Polvinen.

The ETA-test environment tries to simulate in-field bathroom conditions as well as possible. This means that the tests are more extensive and stricter on some points than the corresponding Finnish tests.

Designers have now more alternatives to choose fromThere are several assessment categories or levels for different properties when tested according to ETA. The minimum requirements for each property have to be fulfilled, but there is also a possibility to use for example different reinforcements or thicker membrane layer to reach higher assessment category. This gives designers freedom to choose different combinations for different objects within one membrane kit. Kiilto is offering the combination also for highest assessment category on every tested property. Usually the best level is reached with the well-known Kerafiber kit membrane thickness and products.

Kiilto training The upgraded Kerafiber was launched at the end of April 2011. The new certificate and Kerafiber-procedure guide is now marketed for the Finnish customers and construction experts.

then measuring the bond strength

• constructions are exposed to accelerated aging at high

temperatures

Different types of measurements are made during and after

the stress tests and the results are documented for the Ce-

application process.

VTT continues testingThe application and testing process for the Ce marking is demanding. in Finland VTT expert

services helps its customers in the process.

– Over the past few years we have gradually changed our tests to correspond the eTa-testing.

so, the change from our national approval procedure to the Ce-procedure is not very big

technicalwise, says Liisa Rautiainen, the assessment manager from VTT expert service Oy.

But what is different in the Ce-testing compared to the Finnish procedure is the scope of the

test environment: tests are carried out in minibathrooms that are identical to real bathrooms

with e.g. several floor drains and inlets.

– We can test many product properties in the same test, e.g. watertightness of joints in

different areas in a bathroom.

The fact is that these extensive tests are more expensive than the tests before and Rautiainen

believes that some products may just vanish from the market. The products belonging to the

scopes of eTa are usually systems.

– standard waterproof testing procedure takes normally a month, in some cases two.

Rautiainen says that changing over to Ce marking is not likely to cause much trouble for the

building sector.

– The biggest change will be experienced among small and medium-sized companies that

are now obliged to document their operations more in detail than before. They produce high-

quality products, but are not used to writing down and documenting their testing processes

and procedures, and that may cause a problem.

Waterproofing work certificates remain valid as before. There is a list of 5000 workers having

a valid waterproofing certificate on VTT expert service Oy’s website.

enthusiastic team in a responsive atmosphere. Dr.

Tech. Raija Polvinen has been the initiator of many

product innovations at Kiilto. she has been working at

Kiilto R&D since 2005, and at the beginning of 2011 she

was named as Kiilto’s research manager. she is also

responsible for Kiilto’s cooperation with universities and

other institutions. To be more formal, Polvinen coordi-

nates Kiilto’s innovative research projects.

– When developing a new idea, it is important to

be in contact with as many quarters as possible, for

example customers, raw material suppliers and univer-

sities. especially when formulating the actual product,

consultation and cooperation with other university

research teams is invaluable. Working with innovations

and ideas is very motivating and suits me and my

curious nature.

Kiilto promises its customers to be the best business partner when it comes to industrial applications and gluing. Now Kiilto’s promise of comprehensive partnership includes also state-of-the-art adhesive testing facilities.

Kiilto R&D centre has got a new testing pilot and the laboratory personnel is notably enthusiastic about it. The new pilot enables more challenging in-house tests and what’s

best, it brings Kiilto’s knowhow and expertise more available to the customer.

– Our customers’ needs gave us the impulse for this major investment. Our aim is to build long and deep business relationships with our customers and we wanted to help our customers to find the right materials and improve their own production process, tells R&D Manager, Dr. Tech Pirjo Laurila, who was in charge of the investment project.

The testing pilot, which is custom-made for Kiilto Oy, has already aroused interest among Kiilto customers as expected.

– Kiilto’s new testing facilities provide us great new possibilities, commends Production Manager Seppo Kauppinen from Fenestra Oy. Fenestra is testing new adhesives for its laminate production.

– If the tests had been carried out in our own plant, it would have taken two working days and the production should have been stopped. Testing the adhesive with the Kiilto pilot took only a couple of hours.

Scientific tests...Kiilto’s testing pilot can be used for testing both 2-component as well as 1-component adhesives. It has a stripe applicator and heated press with adjustable compression pressure or dimension.

Also speed of the line can be adjusted. A special mass flow meter assesses the adhesive

amount and density accurately. Intelligent control system allows defining the features to be tested and monitoring the testing process.

– We can do either one-shot tests or simulate customer’s non-stop processes, says Laurila.

…improved processesKiilto’s testing pilot is ideal for preparing and testing of customer’s own gluing processes. One testing process from preparations to end takes approximately half a day.

– We can make the setting adjustments corre-spond to the settings of customer’s own produc-tion and test different adhesives with different ma-terials - and customer’s own production continues undisturbed!

– We can determine the optimal adhesive amount for different applications or find out, whether the tested materials are fit for gluing at all. The pilot is ideal for minor process adjustments, such as temperature or quantity settings, explains Pirjo Laurila.

Kiilto uses the new pilot also for its own R&D. – At the moment we are developing a new

generation of adhesives for sandwich-panels, says Laurila. ■

In the coming summer some happy owner of a new Kontio-house might just well pat that very log on his/her wall. Before ending up on the wall, timber goes through numerous processes at Kontiotuote Oy’s

factory in Pudasjärvi. Every year Kontiotuote Oy manufactures some 2000 houses for the Finnish market and for export.

– Log house is a healthy and ecological choice. Building a Kontio-house is relatively easy, since we have simple and detailed instructions for the erection process, says foreman Mika Timonen, who is responsible for the production of laminated timber at Kontiotuote Oy.

The new manufacturing hall enables manufacturing thicker timberThe traditional Kontiotuote-concept includes log houses, saunas, second homes and other recreational wooden buildings. In not satisfied with the model houses and budget permitting, the customer can mix and create a house of his/her own liking and choose even the log type of which the house will be made of. Nowadays laminated timber is more popular than the traditional log, because of its special characteristics.

– Laminated timber simply looks good and does not crack so easily than log and keeps its stability. And when manufacturing the laminated timber so that placing the weather-resistant heartwood on the outer side of the timber, makes it very durable, describes Timonen.

Kontiotuote has built a new manufacturing hall beside the older one and it will be taken into use this spring. This investment of 5 million euros enables Kontiotuote to meet the new stricter energy efficiency requirements that were imposed on the building sector at the beginning of 2010. New regulations will be implemented already at the beginning of 2012.

– In the new hall we have faster production lines and an equipment that enables plaining and latching thicker timber. Timber thickness must be grown from 205 mm to 275 mm.

The biggest employer in PudasjärviKontiotuote is the biggest employer in Pudasjärvi,

and 75 % of its sales remains in Finland. The biggest export country is Russia. Kontio-houses going to Russia are usually far bigger than those built in Finland. Wood building is becoming more and more popular also in Germany and France.

– In France they favour ecological building and small carbon print, so that is naturally a good thing for us, says Timonen.

Kontio is known for high quality products and fast service - things that have made it the number one log house manufacturer in Finland over the past 35 years.

Not only the tightening energy efficiency regulations, but also the global economic crisis has challenged the timber industry. Since 2010, after two dull years, the sales has been picking up, which is vital for a small town like Pudasjärvi with 9000 inhabitants.

Adhesive’s strength is strictly testedKontio exploits the latest technology in its production. Among latest improvements are, for example,e diversified log profiles and improved sealing and assembly techniques.

Kontiotuote is constantly run-ning tests with new adhesive types to find the best for its purposes.

– We glue approx. 200 m3 timber per day, last year 40 000 m3 per year. For finger jointing we used 18 000 kg adhesive and for laminated timber 77 000 kg, counts Timonen.

From the customer’s point of view, the most important property of adhesive is its strength. But Timonen wants to remind that there are various other properties that are crucial as far as the actual production process is concerned.

– The adhesive must come out of the equipment easily and spread evenly on the surface - that

guarantees strong bond. Strength of glued surfaces must comply with our own quality criteria as well as criteria set by Inspecta Sertifointi Oy twice a year. Each finger jointed timber batch is tested: we take a two-meter test sample and test its strength. We also take a sample of each laminated timber batch and run it through a delaminating test: the sample is exposed to a weathering stress, which compares to 40 years period under normal weather conditions outdoors.

The world’s biggest log house manufacturer is satisfied with Kiilto-adhesives.

– We have tested Kiilto-adhesives thoroughly and they work faultlessly. Apart from high Kiilto-quality, we value locality - adhesives are delivered quickly and on time, says Timonen. ■

Ruukki Polska in the Western Poland manufactures sandwich-panels the result from a Finnish-Polish joint project. Panels are used for building of large chain stores and warehouses in the eastern parts of the Central Europe. Text and Photos HenRi MyRTTinen

We are now on a factory tour at Ruukki Polska in Oborniki. The factory produces so called sandwich panels, which are construction panels made of

steel and different core materials. – In principal, the manufacturing process

is quite simple, explains Ruukki’s purchasing manager Kaj Lönnroth.

– The core material, for example this mineral wool here, is glued inside two steel plates. But, the actual manufacturing process can be very complicated.

– You have to handle the materials with extreme care, continues Monika Szymkowska, purchaser at Ruukki Polska.

– Mineral wool, for example, have to be abraded very carefully and all abrading dust must be removed carefully before gluing.

Custom-made durable panels Oborink has three sandwich panel production lines, one for each core material: polyurethane (PUR/PIR), expanded polystyrene (EPS) and mineral wool. Panels are made according to customers’ specifications, only thickness is limited to 40-200 mm.

Panels are ideal for building warehouses and big halls, e.g. hypermarkets. Ruukki has customers like IKEA and Tesco, only name but a few. Tesco is a British supermarket chain that has established a strong foothold in the Central and Eastern Europe.

– When building large warehouses and markets the benefits of the panels, such as economic efficiency and durability, are emphasized. The constructor values also the simplicity and fastness of panel building, boasts Lönnroth.

Obornik manufactured panels already before Ruukki bought the plant in 2005. At the same time Ruukki started cooperation with Kiilto in Poland. In addition to Obornik, which lies some 30 km north of Poznan, Ruukki has production in Wrocław and Zyrardow. Ruukki Polska plant manufactures also various steel and metal products.

– Originally Oborniki was a state-owned company called Metalplast and manufactured also construction panels. However, the productivity of the company was not so good then, says Monika Szymkowska.

– Today we product some 2-3 million square meters panels with three production lines, whereas Metalplast had only one line. Now we are the second biggest panel manufacturer in Poland.

Growing productionThe main market of Ruukki Polska is Poland: 50 % of the panels are sold in Poland. Rest of the production goes to the neighbouring countries: the Baltic countries, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine. The economic downturn in the Middle and Eastern Europe has affected also Oborniki.

– 2007 was our best year so far with 3 million square meters of panels. The current production level is one third lower than in 2007, and we have been forced to reduce our personnel by 30%. Now we have 400 employees, says Szymkowska. It seems that the deepest recession is over now.

– This year we have managed to increase our production. Production in the first quarter 2011 was doubled compared to the first quarter in 2010. And they say that Poland has coped with the crisis much better than the European countries generally, reminds Lönnroth.

R&D is based on close cooperationKiilto’s and Ruukki’s cooperation started in Finland, where Ruukki’s plant in Alajärvi had used Kiilto-products since 1980’s.

Poznán lies by the river Warta in the western Poland and has 500 000 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest towns in Poland and is an important focus of trade and industry.

to Poland from Kiilto’s plant in Lempäälä. Steel comes from Ruukki’s own plants, also from Finland and core material comes from Poland. Both Szymkowka and Lönnroth want to point out that Ruukki’s and Kiilto’s cooperation is much more than only buying and using of adhesives.

– There are two crucial aspects that have to take into consideration when using adhesives in panel manufacturing. You must use enough adhesive to keep the panel materials together, but using too much can cause a fire risk, explains Lönnroth.

– We work closely with Kiilto. Together have managed to improve adhesive properties and thus reduce our adhesive consumption by 10 %. Earlier we needed two different adhesives for polystyrene and mineral wool, now we manage with one. This is a good example of our joint R&D work. Both Szymkowska and Lönnroth are of same opinion of the Finnish-Polish teamwork.

– At the beginning we had to get accustomed to each other’s working methods and culture, which is totally normal when two different cultures meet. But I must say that things have gone very well, says Szymkowska.

– Polish workforce is very competent, boasts Lönnroth.

– We have very strict quality standards here, and our employees follow them strictly. But I

must say that the working culture in Poland is somewhat different from the Finnish. For example, here in Poland people are used to have long negotiations before decision making. An unbeatable benefit for us and our business is that our Polish employees know the clientele well and their language. We Finns can bring in our technical competence and international network.

Successful cooperation in Poland has laid a solid ground for Ruukki to branch out in new areas in the Middle and Eastern Europe. Ruukki Polska’s and Kiilto Oy’s experts have been assisting in the start-up of Ruukki’s new plants in Rumania and Ukraine. ■

Kiilto FlexSilan is a whole new type of parquet adhesive for gluing of mosaic, thin

block and block parquet as well as engineered wooden boards and endblock floorings.

M1-classified Flexsilan is a 1-component adhesive and contains not water or

isocyanates.

• Coverage: approx. 1 kg/m2

• Package size: 10 l plastic pail (approx. 16.5 kg).

Kiilto Max is a fast-curing joint mortar especially for clinker tiles and stone floor

tiles. Kiilto Max contains quartz sand, which make s it very wear-resistant. not

recommended for gloss glazed tiles. Recommended joint width 3 - 12 mm and depth

min. 3 mm. suitable for indoor and outdoor use and can be applied also with a rubber

trowel.

Kiilto OTR is a coarse, sprayable cement based smoothing and filling plaster for walls

in dry and wet room areas. suitable also for exterior walls, but needs coating. suitable

for smoothing and fillings of e.g. concrete, hard rendering, cement based levellings,

expanded clay aggregate blocks, lime sand bricks and burnt bricks. The dried surface

can be finished with paint or ceramic tiles. if a smoother surface is needed, for example

under waterproofing membrane, the surface can be overlevelled with a finer Kiilto sK

(plaster for wet room) or by rubbing with a steel trowel.

• Partial smoothing: 5-30 mm, overall smoothing 5-20 mm

• Drying time: 24 - 72 h depending on layer thickness and conditions

Kiilto TopPlan Smoothing Compound is used at thickness between 1-10 mm,

in small areas at thickness up to 20 mm. also pumpable. Kiilto TopPlan is ideal for

smoothings under e.g. vinyl flooring or vinyl tile. suitable also for smoothing of solid

concrete prior to laying mosaic parquet, minimum layer thickness 2 mm.

Kiilto 70 is an M1-classified floor screed. Ready for rubbing right after application. For

castings and fillings of floors and also for construction of slopes at thickness 5–100 mm

in- and outdoors. suitable under waterproofing membrane. Walkable after 2 hours from

casting and coverable 20 mm/24 h. Kiilto 70 can be used in conjunction with Kiilto

start Primer for bonded casted floors or with a reinforcing mesh.

if used with underfloor heating, the heating pipes /cables are glued with a hot-setting

adhesive on a primed subfloor or installed in the reinforcing mesh.

Kiilto Akva Contact is an M-classified, water based contact adhesive for gluing of

different types of floor and wall coverings, profiles and laths, foamed plastics, laminate,

cardboard, leather and fabric. For indoor use only. adhesive joint is ready immediately

after pressing. Joint is light-resistant and does not darken with time. Has good thermal

resistance (approx. 70 °C).

• Consumption: 3-4 m2/l (two-sided application)

• Package size: 0.3 l bottle and 3 l plastic pail

Kiilto Care is a waterbased curing agent especially for floating floor screed floor

and one-way curing constructions, e.g. dB-floors. Recommended also for other floor

screed floors that will remain uncoated for longer times after levelling. suitable also for

concrete floors and for dust binding for floors exposed to light wear only.

• Consumption: Care 1 l + water 2 l = 3 l > 20–30 m2.

Kiilto Surface Cleaner is used for surface cleaning prior to gluing or other

treatment. it is a composition of solvents and removes effectively grease and dirt

from different metal and plastic surfaces. Does not contain any aromatic solvents.

Kiilto surface Cleaner suits well for cleaning of crude, galvanized or anodic metal

surfaces. Can be used also for plastic, but always test on a small area before the

actual use. suitable for cleaning fresh Kestopur and Kiiltoflex -adhesive residue from

glued surfaces and metal tools. Kiilto surface Cleaner must not be used in automatic

washes of glue spreading machines.

Kiilto Cleaning Primer removes effectively grease from metal surfaces and

prepare/activates the surface for glue. Kiilto Cleaning Primer is used for priming

of metals, such as stainless or hot galvanized steel and aluminium prior to gluing.

needs no separate grease removing agent. improves adhesion of Kestopur-

polyurethane adhesives onto aluminium. if the surfaces are very dirty, clean them

with Kiilto surface Cleaner first and let dry. Remove oxides etc. by sanding. The best

result is achieved, if the surface is abraded before priming. Remember to remove

sanding dust carefully before gluing!

Kestopur 205/30EKestopur 205/30e is a 2-component, solvent-free polyurethane adhesive which

gives strong yet elastic adhesive bond. suits for gluing of e.g. metals, wood,

insulation materials and fibre composite. Has tough adherence to metals, especially

aluminium. Kestopur 205/30e is developed for sandwich panel manufacturing and

suits well for machine application. Kestopur 200/s -hardener is used in conjunction

with Kestopur 205/30 e -resin: 5 parts resin + 1 part hardener. To get the best result,

we recommend using Kiilto Cleaning Primer with Kestopur 250/30 e.

Sitol 4186a fast binding sitol 4168 adhesive is used in manufacturing of toilet and kitchen

paper roll cores. Raw materials of sitol 4168 adhesive comply with the requirements

defined in FDa 175.105 -standard.

Kestokol D 4800 is a 1-component adhesive suitable for gluing of windows and

doors, joint assembly gluing, cold, thermo and high frequency press and finger-

jointing. Complies with en 204/D4 water resistance requirements and WaTT 91 heat

resistance requirements. adhesive does not require any hardener.
