Brother Knights,

In the coming days and

weeks many of our broth-

ers and their parish fami-

lies may be home-

bound. Brothers, I would

ask that all of us maintain

contact with our Parish Priests and offer to as-

sist in any way that we can. Some may need

assistance with the Eucharist, some may need

help with food or other items. Many of our

brother Knights are elderly, please reach out to

them to ensure that their needs are being taken

care of. I know a lot of what I'm saying is com-

mon sense, but in times of crisis sometimes pri-

orities become confused.

For those of you who are planning to conduct a

new combined ceremonial in the near future,

perhaps now is the time to consider bringing

your candidates into the order using the on-line

membership method instead. If you have any

questions on how to accomplish it, please feel

free to give me, or our State Membership Di-

rector Brian Heger, a call and we'll walk you

through the process.

Brothers, in these times of difficulties we need

to stand together as North Dakota Knights of

Columbus. I'm calling upon all of you, my

brothers, to continue to engage with and assist

your Pastors, parishes and communities in eve-

ry possible way!

Vivat Jesus!

- State Chaplain Message -

When I was 11 years old, my 4 other broth-ers, we were shoveling grain in the grain bin. My older brother was complaining that his shovel was too small, and it was giving him a back aches. Well, my dad said...."Well son, I have a remedy for that!" He left the grain bin, and in a few minutes he came in with a grain shovel that had an extended handle, and a bigger shovel! Then my dad said: "This "pill" should take care of your

back....get back to work!" That great memory of my very "German" dad, didn't let my brother get away with quitting, but another way to do the work! I think sometime we are working within the Church with a too "small of a shovel!" If we believe with our whole heart that Jesus Christ is there to assist us, than we need understand we are working with "Bigger Grace!" Because of the many struggles in the Church today, we as priest and people are looking for a way to quit, because we are exhausted by the world. That is namely what I want to write to you my brother Priests and Knights.....the struggle of the world! Our great God told us in the Garden of Paradise because of the Sin of Adam, we would have to work in toil and struggle!! The world was given to the Devil to Roam and spread his lies. God did not leave us there to our own struggles; the prophecy

was made that as Satan strikes at our feet to trip us up, he will come to our aid to hold us up. He gave us another way to on earth....Grace to aid us to see a new way of living that will bring us another way to live. How do you and I live each day on Earth? Is it....."Oh God.....another day?" Or...."OH GOD ANOTHER DAY!" God gives us the day to live, what we are doing with it! Are we finding new ways to live in the grace of God? Where can you help another in their day to work better! A smile is the best way to start externally. But it begins in the soul, a new attitude to see each day as a gift and a blessing. There is an old saying: "I walk this way but once, if there be any good I can do, let me do it NOW! For I shall not walk this way again. With the Lord, he always finds us new ways to live more deeply in Love, if we are willing to accept it, and continue to do our Good Work each day, and not give up. "Here is a shovel with a longer handle, and a bigger shovel....now get back to work!" Fr. Chad Wilhelm Chaplain to North Dakota Knights of Columbus

Field Agent Joel Herman

My name is Joel Herman. I was born and raised in Jamestown. I have been a Field Agent with the Knights of Columbus since July of 2014. I graduated from the University of Minnesota State Moorhead with a major in Operations Management. I also have a degree in Automated Manufacturing from the North Dakota State College of Science. I was working for Sanford Health when I got a call from my Knights of Columbus Agent. When we met, he was just about to start a new role as General Agent for North Dakota. He asked if I had ever considered being an Agent. That was the night it all started! A long-time friend of ours, Kevin Lesmeister had been a Field Agent for the Knights until he had some health issues. I had called him and discussed the opportunity with him in length. He said that if I worked hard, I could change

people’s lives. That’s something that meant a lot to me. It is very gratifying knowing that the work we do within the Knights can change families lives for generations to come. The Knights of Columbus is a big family. From members, to agents, to home office staff, we’re all involved to help keep the vision of Fr. McGivney alive! There are so many ways to be involved with the Knights and on so many different levels! It really is Brother Knights helping Brother Knights. I want to be a part of the councils and help at the fraternal activities as much as I can. That has always meant a lot to me. I have been married to my wife, Jill, for 13 years. We have 3 children. Jocelyn, Julia, and Jase. They enjoy the KofC activities that they’ve had a chance to go to. State Conventions are always fun for them. A weekend in a hotel with a pool is always something they look forward to. They stay busy with schoolwork and music. Both girls are in Piano and Jocelyn started Percussion this year. Jase, well, he just takes it all in right now. Let’s just say, he likes Paw Patrol. I have been involved with the Red River Volkswagen Club for the past 15 years. I am past President of the club serving 10 years. That has been a fun activity that our whole family can take part in. It’s some-thing that the kids will remember as a fun event each year. I also am an avid hunter and outdoorsman. I’d like to thank the families that I work with. It has been wonderful getting to know every one of you. I hope you all have a great spring and an even better summer! Vivat Jesus

Message from Fourth Degree Vice Supreme Master

WOW, when was the last time you looked at attending a function and found out it was postponed or

cancelled. This seems to be what we are experiencing the last several weeks. State convention has

also fallen into that category of cancellation by the recommendation of the Supreme office. We will

still take care of the business; it will just be in a format that we have not had before. How technolo-

gy has changed us.

I have instructed all my District Masters to continue doing what they feel comfortable with and for

the most part they have all decided to postpone exemplifications until we get a clearing from Su-

preme and the Governor of each State. Since many of the Masses are cancelled for the time being,

our Honor Guards are also cancelled. This gives you the time to get that new uniform purchased so

we can continue to support those that need it.

Message from State Program Director

Hello Brother Knights, Hope this newsletter finds you and your family in great health! Membership is on the rise in North Dakota! Way to go! Brother Knights let’s keep up the momentum we have right now with recruitment in our

great State of North Dakota. Continue to ask fellow practicing Catholics to join our Fraternal Catholic organ-ization of the Knights of Columbus. This is an opportuni-ty for them to further their Catholic Faith through our Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism programs. Holding a Delta Church drive along with the new com-bined Exemplification after Mass will increase the mem-bership in our Order! Some general information:

After a new Knight has gone through the new com-bined exemplification, remember to fill in the date in each degree box (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) on the form 100 be-fore sending the form to Supreme. Supreme will then automatically put them on your roster as a third-degree Knight.

Reminder, any State Council E-member transferring to a Council will count as a new Member to your Council after going through the new combined ex-emplification

Councils holding the new combined exemplification

should have all the exemplification materials: con-stitutional roll, rosaries, KofC pins, and prayer cards. For those presenting the exemplification suits and yellow sashes are encouraged to be worn.

Form 100’s need to be filled out completely (degree

dates, signed by new Knight, FS, and GK or at least the DD) before sending to Supreme. Financial Sec-retaries or District Deputies, working with the Finan-cial Secretary, should be the ONLY ones sending the completed form 100’s to Supreme, State Member-ship Director, and your local Insurance agent.

Thank you everyone who has recruited already this year! The State Incentives are still available. “Get into the game”! God Bless, Brian Heger, State Membership Director

Message from State Program Director

As I write this Lent has just begun, prayer, fasting and alms-giving are tools we use to prepare our-selves for Easter. Praying the Novena for Life

and participating in the Silver Rose program will be a

great Lenten practice. The Pregnancy Support Centers throughout our state are in need of our time, treasures and talents. Below I have a description of each of these programs followed by the Novena Prayer. Silver Rose, Share the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote respect for life by participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico, through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all

human life and honoring Our Lady. The Silver Rose will be in North Dakota April 5th through April 25th. Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Novena for life, The protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church, and in particular of the Knights of Columbus. Knights remain firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being – from the moment of conception to natural death. To commemorate and bolster this important cause, councils will promote a novena, nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parishes, homes and wider community Pregnancy Center Support, More than

3,000 pro-life pregnancy centers now operate throughout territories of the Knights of Columbus. By the very nature of its founding, the Knights of Columbus is called to care for the widow and orphan. Abortion-vulnerable unborn children and mothers experiencing unexpected pregnancies certainly fall within that mandate. With aid from the Knights, pregnancy centers can offer support to help women choose life. Councils can “adopt” a pregnancy center and provide material, labor, and spiritual support throughout the year. On behalf of myself and Linda and I wish you and your families a Blessed Easter! Happy Easter! As we are approach-ing the state con-vention in Dickin-son, I want to invite everyone to come and see the wonder-ful works you all have done so far this year. It’s a time

to celebrate the hard work of the councils, hear about the programs we deeply support, and be astonished by the amount of money you have raised this year and donated to great causes in our state.

Thank you for the continued sup-port of our Faith in Action programs and reporting the activities. Now with year 2 years under our belt, we have been able to understand and better support our new programs. If you haven’t seen it yet, there will be a

new Hockey program next fraternal year very similar to our Free Throw and Soccer Challenge. It should be another great event to get our youth involved and continue to get them involved in our communities we live in.

Be on the lookout for more commu-nication in the coming weeks and month to finish out our fraternal year and what reports will be needed. WE are lacking in the number of Audits that are being turned it. The list is growing and growing, so please turn them in. They were due February 15th, but that doesn’t mean you cannot turn them in still. Audits are very im-portant to turn in and keep the council in an active status.

The SP-7 or Columbian Award, will be coming up in June. This report is around the supreme activities that been completed throughout the year

and should be easy to complete if your council has been reporting each month. Don’t wail to fill it out in June. Start now with what has been completed and can be turned in early if you have completed all 16 activi-ties.

Please continue to pray during the next months as we are in the middle of uncarted times in our country and world, we need to be “brothers in Christ” more than ever.

During his homily at Holy Mass on Ash Wednesday at the Basilica of Santa Sabina Pope Francis said….“Our earthly possessions will prove useless, dust that scatters, but the love we share – in our families, at work, in the Church and in the world – will save us, for it will en-dure forever.” Our Brother Knights and their families are making mean-ingful differences in our families, at work, in the Church and in the world the through our Faith in Action program. The Faith in Action program offers men a place to lead their families and communities in faith and service and put their Faith into Action. If you have any questions and/or concerns please feel free to contact me at 701.371.2688 or [email protected]

Mike Steiner, State Secretary

Thank you to all the Assemblies that are embracing the uniform. It looks very sharp and up to date. To keep your As-sembly active, you need new members to join the Fourth Degree and this is what they will need to wear to participate in Honor Guards and Color Guards. Instructions for ordering the uniform or individual replacement items were on the

back page of the last Columbia magazine.

Brother Knights, As I sat on the bus heading for the 47th Annual March for Life it hit me that many Knights, outside of those directly involved, may not realize the involvement the Knights of Columbus have in this annual march. I decided that this month I would spend time to try and explain to you just how involved the Knights are as well as say thank you since many of you played a vital role in helping those young men and women from North Dakota who desired to travel on this pil-grimage a chance to go either through financial backing and/or keeping us in your prayers. The Knights, and specifically the Virginia Knights of Columbus, have been involved since the first march in 1974. Their role in the march itself varies with the most visible job being the mar-shals who direct traffic at the front of the march in their coordi-nating jackets and hats. They are responsible of keeping every-one behind the main banner and photographers such as myself out the way of the marchers. In addition to the visible they have a large number of other jobs such as arranging for permits, coordi-nating with local police, escorting speakers on the main stage, serving as a lost and found (both marchers and items), serving in first aid tents, and generally being the muscle for what the march needs done. The president of the March Jeannie Mancini has said in the past that "Without the Virginia Knights of Columbus there would be no March for Life" and I can tell you that after seeing them in action first hand it is true. Talking to a few of the Knights volunteering at this year’s march I heard a wide variety of stories of where they are from and memories they have from their years of serving the pro-life movement. But regardless of the Knight or his role, there was one similarity to each of their stories, the continuous years they have in this fight. Not a one I talked to had served at the march less than seven years with one around "24-25 years, I lose count." The link at the bottom of this column is to the Supreme Website showing a few pictures over the decades of the K of C's involvement in the fight for life. It is something we should be proud of and something we should embrace. We will win this fight and secure protection for all life and it will come in this

generation's lifetime I believe. It will come because of a 500,000 person march in Washington DC, an ultrasound machine donated to a pregnancy help center, a breakfast who's proceeds go to buying diapers for those families in need, a Rosary said for the protection of the unborn, or a simple prayer said in the silence of our own hearts.

I thank you all again for the efforts of the Knights in the Bis-marck Diocese and North Dakota as a whole. In spite of a 30+ hour one way bus ride, poor road conditions, unpredictable weather, government shutdowns, etc. this pilgrimage continues to grow and this year was no exception. You helped to send ap-proximately 200 pilgrims and chaperones (four busses) from the three Catholic high schools in the Bismarck Diocese, 100 (two busses) from the public schools of western ND, as well as multi-ple busses from the University of Mary. School specific numbers show just how dedicated to the protection of life our next genera-tion truly is; at Bishop Ryan Catholic School in Minot the stu-dents are able to make this pilgrimage from their sophomore year onward. This year’s senior class had 18 of their 24 students trav-el with seven making it for a third time. Those seven have trav-eled 8,200 miles, 190 hours, seen 12 states (and one district) on a bus just to get to DC and back not counting miles and hours while in the city. They have seen the Vice President and Presi-dent speak, they have met with members of Congress, visited the Knights of Columbus’ Shrine to St. John Paul II, had Mass with Cardinal Dolan, and amazed many across the country with their stories of dedication. Those are all wonderful numbers but it doesn’t show the true

impact this pilgrimage has on the individual. Lives are changed, and lives will be changed going forward because of the pilgrim-age. If you doubt that your help matters, or if this pilgrimage actually changes lives, I end this letter with a note given to me by a young pilgrim that is similar to one or two I get each year... "Before I came on this trip I was undecided about whether I was pro-choice or pro-life and I simply just came for the experience, but after coming in this trip and going to the rally to see what everything was really about I realized how amazing and how important life is. For the first half of this trip; which was mostly the bus ride and mass I was just praying and asking for God to tell me what the right thing was for me to do. This trip really moved me and helped my faith in many ways and I’m beyond grateful for everything so many people have done for me to come

on this trip. Thank you!" God Bless, Brian Rodgers Minot Bishop Ryan March for Life Coordinator District Deputy #8

My name is Carter Fong, and I am a field agent for Knights of Columbus Insurance in western North Dakota. I began in June of 2019, so I am nearing the end of my first year in the field, and I have met some great people along the way. Prior to working for the Knights of Columbus, I graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Social Science Education, and I began teaching at Dickinson Trinity High School in the fall of 2007. I then added a Master’s Degree in Secondary Administration through the University of Mary when I became Trinity’s principal at the ripe old age of 26. Later, I migrated back to the classroom and into the varsity girls basketball coaching position, where I enjoyed a good five year run. In the meantime, I met my wife Stephanie while singing Mass music at Dickinson’s Queen of Peace Parish. We were married in 2012, and we have added three wonderful children to our family. Our daughter Sydney is 6, our son Parker is 4, and our son Peyton is a ½ year old. Sydney and Parker are enrolled in the Trinity Cath-olic Schools, while my wife works in the marketing office for CHI St. Alexius Dickinson Hospital. By the fall of 2018, I knew that I wore my many hats at Trinity for as long as I could. Pat Dolan from KC Insurance called me to visit about insurance agent prospects. Perhaps I was Pat’s prospect all along. At any rate, when we learned in January 2019 that Peyton was on the way, the time was right for a career change that offered the same ability to work with great Catholic families, but on a flexible schedule.

The Fong Family, Carter, Stephanie, Sydney, Parker and Peyton

In the insurance world, I have learned that there are no cookie cutter solutions. It takes quality time at my office or perhaps at your kitchen table to determine how our life insurance, disability income, long-term care and retirement annuities can protect each family. I am eager to carry out Father McGivney’s vision of uniting Catholic men and their families in a fraternity that offers faith-based financial support.

“Blankets of Hope”

At the December meeting of State Officers and Chairmen, the ladies got together and made 25 fleece blankets for the children at Home on the Range who were not able to go home for the Christmas holidays. The “blankets of hope” send a message of hope and joy as well as comfort to know that they are being remembered and prayed for.

As March and spring quickly approaches, Knights across North Dakota will be calling upon their friends and neighbors to assist them in helping the children of Home On The Range near Sen-tinel Butte through money raised from the annual Shamrock Project. Home On The Range has been a special charity of the Knights of Columbus as a State project since 1964. Over time, the Shamrock Project has had many slogans, such as “a green for a green.” This statement suggests donating a dollar bill for a green, chenille Shamrock pin. But the green can repre-sent more than that. It can be a sign of growth and hope; as in the new life blossoming after a long winter. At Home On The Range, the children experience a newness, a sense of hope and many life changing experiences.

Home On The Range is located in the beautiful rolling hills of western North Dakota. It is a clean, wholesome ranch environ-ment and home to boys and girls who may have had a past of trauma, addictions, abuse or neglect. They may have been moved from family member to family member, or in other placements such as foster care, hospitalization, or other residential care. While the children live at Home On The Range, they attend school on campus or in nearby Beach Public Schools. Some children don’t attend school but are working towards their G.E.D. certificate. The children are invited to become involved in the spiritual program and develop their faith or grow stronger in their faith. The boys and girls participate in different therapy sessions. Some are traditional, such as individual sessions or drug and alcohol preven-tion groups. There are many unique, cutting-edge and progressive therapy sessions such as adventure therapy, equine assisted therapy and canine assisted therapy. Other things to keep the young adults busy and help them learn valuable living skills are the work programs and the many opportunities for recreational activities, on- campus and off-campus. The staff strive to be empathetic, compassionate and supportive.

The staff give the children guidance and direction, and act as role-models. The staff teach the children how to make good choices and decisions, so they can succeed in life once they leave Home On The Range “I have learned a lot about myself since I’ve been here. I’m

resilient, a hard worker, I want things my way at times, and I do everything that I can to make the best out of the worst situations until in my mind it’s no longer possible. I have also learned that life is full of many obstacles and you’re going to have to jump over them and they’re not always easy and you have to accept things you can’t change and live life with a positive mind set if you want to live happily.”

“What I love about HOTR is everything it provides such as

supportive staff that will do anything they can to get our needs met, great groups that involve animals, sports, and spiritual exercises, as well as learn things that we can take with us as we leave here. They have good food, and many opportunities to go on activities like swimming, bowling, movies, sports games, concerts, and much more as well as cool activities on campus here like paintball, games related with water, movies outside, campfires, and picnics. It’s a fantastic place to set up and prepare a new and healthier life.” 17 year-old girl at Home On The Range

We hope you will participate actively in your Council’s Shamrock Project by giving generously and proudly wearing the Shamrock pin. This will be a reminder of the help and support you give the children at Home On The Range. Your gift of green represents hope and a new life for a child; for a chance to become healthy, happy and successful. If you miss the Shamrock fundraisers, you can give your donation to your Grand Knight. All the funds from the Shamrock Project will be presented to Home On The Range at the Knights of Columbus state convention in April.

Home On The Range is a special project supported by the North Dakota Knights of Columbus. Home On The Range is licensed to care for 36 boys and girls, ages 12 – 19, from across the state of North Dakota. The facility is under the Auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Bismarck. The Most Reverend Bishop David D. Kagan serves as the President of the Board of Directors. For more information, to schedule a tour, or to make a tax-deductible contribution, go to www.hotrnd.com.

About ND Knights of Columbus Foundation The mission the North Dakota Knights of Columbus Foundation is to provide financial assistance for religious, educational and charitable programs of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in North Dakota.

www.nd-kofc-foundation.com

Our Goals To encourage Knights, their families and friends to be partners through prayer and gifts. This partnership is based

on shared devotion and commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church. · To be good stewards of the resources given to us, so that in an appropriate and responsible way, we can carry out

the first principle of our Order, which is charity.

What are the Benefits of Giving?

In addition to the gift being tax deductible, any contributor who gives a gift in the name of a living or deceased person will have that person remembered at a weekly Mass offered at Assumption Abbey in Richardton, ND, indefinitely. · Memorial Cards are appropriate for

deceased family members or friends.

· All Occasion Cards are used as birthday or anniversary gifts, as get well wishes or on other occa-sions.

· Pledge Cards are used to make do-nation to the Foundation that can be paid over several years.

All our cards are available at no charge from any Foundation board member.

Why your Contributions Matter We were able to give away $26,500 in scholarships this year,

which was almost $4,000 than 2018. We have 17 Seminarians in Fargo and 21 in Bismarck and with

these numbers growing, we want to try and support as many as possible.

With your continued support, we can find new ways to help spread the word of our cause, grow our events, and deliver more scholarships.

With donated items and support at our auction coming up on April 26-28th in Dickinson, it’s great way for us to grow our endowment fund and show your support to our seminarians.

Why Should You Give To The Foundation? Contributions to a Foundation are not spent, so it is a gift that keeps on giving. Many of us have many blessings, and much to be thankful for. One way to show our appreciation for these blessings is to share them so that others who are in need can be helped. This can easily be done though the Knights of Columbus Foundation.
