Brother Knights: What a great start to the new year------The Installation of Officers at St. Rose of Lima Church went very smoothly and there was a great degree of reverence and instruction to all the incoming officers and they all appreciated the for-mality and ceremony. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL. After having a very good turnout at the church, we had an overflow crowd at the hall (a good problem to have), for the social and a great dinner prepared by Al McKinley and crew plus the bar was very busy. THANKS The turnover and the change of guard went off smoothly and in short order ( to everyones delight ). Our participation in the Special Olympics Torch Run was OUTSTANDING. We, Council 5803, were pleased and honored to lead the runners and their managers from the pa-vilion stage to the street to continue their run. We were fea-tured of TV. The membership kick off drive was very productive, thanks to the effort of our team. We had a 1st Degree on Wed. 22nd and a 2nd Degree on Wed. 29th. here at our hall. Everyone had a great experience, thanks to OUR TEAM. Thank you Bob Spielman, GK

Russ:

There were 85 charter members. There was always an argument

about that because one Brother had changed his name and appeared

twice on the Charter. We formed committees, delegated responsibili-

ties, and took on projects. Everyone pitched in to build the Council

according to the goals Fr. McGiveny had set.

Gail:

I planned a Sunday afternoon Welcome Tea for the wives of the

Knights. Our pastor came and many of the wives showed up and ex-

pressed an interest in getting together. A small group of us started

meeting and sharing our ideas for a women’s group. I was trying to

think of a name for our group. Somehow, Ladies of the Knights did-

n’t sound right, and neither did Knightees. I had been looking in

some of the catalogs for Knights’ insignia items, and I found some

pins with the name “Columbiettes” which I proposed we call our-

selves. I did not realize that “Columbiettes” was a national organiza-

tion and our group never joined it! We just borrowed their pins.

1916: When National Guardsmen are sent to the U.S.-Mexico border to pre-vent Mexican Gen. Francisco “Pancho” Villa from raiding towns in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, K of C councils in those states spontaneously respond to the religious and social needs of troops serving there. 1917: When the United States enters World War I, Supreme Knight Flaherty writes President Woodrow Wilson telling him that the Order plans to estab-lish centers to provide for the troops’ “recreational and spiritual comfort.” The Knights’ services, he says, will be offered “regardless of creed.” 1917: By the summer of 1917, the Order opens service centers, or “K of C Huts,” in training camps and behind the lines of battle. The Knights and in-dependent fund drives raise nearly $30 million to finance the huts. 1919-1929: In Search of Liberty After the Great War, the Order continued its charitable work, offering educa-tion and employment services to returning servicemen. In less than two years, the Knights of Columbus Bureau of Employment placed some 100,000 people in jobs. The Order’s presence in Europe continued as well. In August 1920, when a delegation of 235 Knights made a pilgrimage to Rome, Pope Benedict XV invited them to build several recreation centers for Ro-man youth. In response, the Knights constructed five playgrounds throughout the city. The architect, Count Enrico Galeazzi, went on to serve as the Knights’ representative in Rome for more than six decades. Throughout the 1920s, the Order’s anti-defamation work also continued on several fronts. When the Ku Klux Klan and other “nativist” and anti-Catholic groups launched campaigns to make students attend public schools, Church leaders enlisted the Knights’ support. The K of C Historical Commission, meanwhile, worked to overcome racial prejudice in American society, pub-lishing books on the contributions of African-, Jewish-, and German-Americans. Finally, when the Mexican government began enforcing the anti-clerical pro-visions of its 1917 Constitution, the Knights responded with one voice. Un-der President Plutarco Elias Calles, who took power in 1924, priests and reli-gious were exiled and the free exercise of religion was forbidden. In Iniquis Afflictisque, his 1926 encyclical on the persecution of the Church in Mexico, Pope Pius XI praised the Knights’ tireless work, which included a major pub-lic education campaign, diplomatic efforts and charitable support for refu-gees.

INSURANCE REPORT

Have you ever heard the expression “lazy days of sum-mer”? While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busiest time of the year. Es-pecially for parents with school-aged children. And being busy, it’s easy to forget about such things as reviewing your life insurance coverage. The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with me, your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer. Whether or not you have life insurance with the or-der, I’ll be happy to meet with you and make sure your cov-erage continues to meet your needs and goals. If you’ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.) chances are your life insurance needs to be updated. I’ll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford. Call me to set up an appointment. When we meet you’ll dis-cover that time spent with me is time well spent. But make the call today. Because summer is not only busy, it’s also coming to an end. Fraternally, Willie Romero FICF

I don't think it is too early to start thinking about our annual fishing trip. How many times have you said to yourself that you should go on the trip at least once? This trip should be on your bucket list. Start thinking now and be ready when the next trip comes around. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Bishop Creek area of the Eastern Sierra's is be held on the 1st weekend of October (10/1/15-10/4/15). Join me and 40-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. In addition to the South Fork of Bishop Creek that runs through the campground, there are the South Lake, North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake 2 fishing areas nearby. The event is held at the Creekside RV Park with campsites, RV sites, and trailers available for rent. You must make your own reservation for sites. They hold a few sites for us but they are first come-first serve. Contact the office at Creekside for a reservation of your desired site. Be sure to tell them that you will be part of our group. They may be reached at 760-873-4483. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, de-pending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games almost every night. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sunday morning breakfast. Beautiful mountain (elevation 8300 ft at the campgrounds) scenery, good fishing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and the creeks. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that our drought ends before we have more serious water shortages and possible rationing. Special Note: The pond within the Creekside Campgrounds continues to be un-der control of the California Department of Fish and Game. They stock the pond on their schedule. All normal Fish and Game laws apply. For more information, please contact me at a Council or Assembly Event or call me. SK Bill Alexander PGK KCO Club Event Chairman 805-527-4720

4TH DEGREE CORNER DEACON’S CORNER Assumption

The Assumption is the bodily ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary to heaven. No scripture makes direct reference to this but there are several passages that speak of the great dignity of her life, lending support to the idea that Jesus would have continued to reveal His glory by removing the corruption of the grave for His mother. In Hebrew scriptures the Song of Songs contains prophetical refer-ences to Mary (2:10) and (6:9). The New Testament also provides evidence supportive of Mary’s special privilege (Lk 1:28,42) (Rev 12:1). The Council of Ephesus (year 431) defined Mary as the Mother of God. St. John Damascene (d.. C 750) gives us the chief authority for in-formation on Mary’s death. He found the wife of Emperor Marcion (450-457) wanted the earthly remains of Mary brought to the sub-urb of Constantinople. During the Council of Chalcedon (451) the empress was informed that the Virgin’s body was not in Jerusalem but buried in the Garden of Getheseme in the presence of the apostles. It was discovered three days later when the apostles came to venerate her body, that the tomb was empty. It was con-cluded that Jesus had taken His mother to heaven. These apocry-phal accounts serve an important function in the demonstrating what people believed, which became important. The first concrete evidence which speaks of a Marian celebration on August 15 is found in a mid-fifth century Lectionary in Jerusalem calling the feast "Day of Mary Mother of God". Additional evidence of Mary’s wide celebration came from many religious notables in the 7th & 8th centuries. All testify to a feast celebrated to honor Mary’s death and her assumption. The Gregor-ian Sacramentary calls the Aug. 15 feast the "Assumption of Holy Mary". On Nov. 1, 1950 Pope Pius XII declared, "We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." Introducing Fr. Dave Heney I am very happy to be here at St. Rose of Lima parish! Here is some background information about my assignment here. In 2014, I completed my twelve year term as Pastor of St. Paschal’s in Thousand Oaks and began a one year sabbatical from the Archdiocese to write two practical “How-to” manuals for parish priests. The first is on parish leadership and the second describes how to set up an effective adult education program like the University Series. I started the Univer-sity Series in this area in 2002 and it has grown from two parishes to now eleven. In the last several years it has attracted over 11,000 attendees rep-resenting around 3,000 individual people attending multiple classes every year during the Season of Lent. (See universityser-ies.org) That sabbatical year finished last week. Archbishop Gomez wants to make the University Se-ries a reality across the Archdiocese, and has asked me to help spread this educational program across our Archdiocese. Therefore, during this next year, I will reside for one year in residence at St. Rose of Lima parish, and will visit pastors around the Archdiocese for the purpose of establishing University style re-gional programs in their areas. Of course, I will also assist in parish ac-tivities at St. Rose as much as I can, with confessions, weekday Masses, and Sunday Masses. Our pastor, Fr. Joe Shea, is my classmate from our ordination year of 1978 and a longtime friend, and also a longtime sup-porter of the University Series. I am glad to serve alongside my friends Fr. Bill and Fr. Jim as well. Next July, I will be reassigned again as nor-mal to wherever the Archbishop deems best for the needs of the Archdio-cese. I am profoundly grateful to be here at St. Rose, as well as to help develop practical and useful Catholic adult educational programs in other areas. I will, of course, continue my weekly Gospel reflections and arti-cles on biblical archaeology at my website at daveheney.com, and espe-cially timely articles that connect our faith with real life. I very much en-joy discovering the many ways that our faith provides for a happier life! God bless! Fr. Dave.

END OF LIFE OPTIONS ACT

This has been a hard debate and an emotional debate. But I believe the members of the Assembly Health Committee today made the right decision for California, and especially for the poor and most vulnerable members of our society. I am grateful for the committee members’ thoughtful reflection and leadership on this complicated issue. For the Catholic community here in Los Angeles, this is not a “Catholic” issue or a question of our doctrine or ethics. For us, the issue of physician-assisted suicide involves fundamental questions of human dignity and social justice. And we are not alone in our concerns. We are part of a diverse and broad coali-tion — ranging from health care profes-sionals and persons living with disabili-ties to leaders in our African American, Hispanic and immigrant communities. All of us fear that in a for-profit health care system, legalizing as-sisted suicide would lead to injustices and suffering for our poor, elderly and handicapped neighbors, as well as for those living in im-migrant and minority communities. California has a long and proud tradition of leadership in promot-ing human dignity and access to health care for everyone living in our great state. In that spirit, I pray that we can come together as people of good will to seek the solutions — in medical training, geriatrics, palliative treatment and other areas — that can truly improve the compas-sionate care of terminally ill patients and those at the end of life

INSTALLATION Occasional Knights of Columbus Cruise Many people have asked me about another K of C Cruise. We have had K of C Cruises in 1989, 2008, and 2013. How many are interested in another cruise later this year or more likely next spring or fall? The cruise would include Council and As-sembly members in addition to other family and friends. Contact me if you are interested. If there is enough interest (probably 10 to 20 couples) I can start working out potential details. I try to collect as many names as possible because there is a 25-50% dropout from initial interest and final book-ing.

SK Bill Alexander PGK Potential Cruise Coordinator

805-527-4720

Update to request preferences. I now have 20 couples on my list of interested cruisers and maybe more to come. It is time to start to further define our options. Help me with the selection by answering the following questions. What time is best for you Spring (April or May) or Fall (September) ? Our last cruise was in September on Princess Cruise Line. Do you have a preference on the cruise line? Princess or Royal Caribbean? I have ignored Carnival as it doesn't cater to our age group. I assume we would sail from San Pedro to avoid air fares. Cruise companies offer 3 or 4 day cruises. Any preference? They all stop in Ensenada Mexico. Option of stopping in Santa Barbara or Catalina. Any preference? I will gather more information on possible prices and dates for the options above. email your preferences to me at [email protected].

Brothers, As our first month of our Columbian year comes to a close I am thankful for the warm brotherly welcome I have received from each of you at your recent installa-tions and council meetings. I also thank all the Worthy Officers and Field Agents who took time to come to our District Deputy meeting. We are all busy and your atten-dance shows your dedication to your Councils, our Dis-trict and the Order. I would like to thank my District Wardens PGK Bill Alexander and PGK Andy Prete for their assistance in installing our new Worthy Officers. We have one coun-cil yet to install. St. Paschal, Council 5746 in Thousand Oaks will have their installation on Sunday August 9th at 3:00PM. This newly reinstated council would love to have some sup-port of their brothers. I invite all councils in District 79 to join us on the 29th. None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that. To-gether, we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one an-other. St. Paschals, we stand with you! The Special Olympics are winding down and the Knights have been right there alongside the athletes showing our support. I am so proud to be a Knight of Columbus. Out Tootsie roll drive is right around the corner. District 79 will be in full force raising money for people with Intellectual Difficulties.

Our District welcomed 7 new members at our 1st Degree on July 22nd. I was so happy to see so many brothers come out in support of our new Knights. Both Council in Simi Valley and Moorpark Council added new members to our ranks. Please remember that each of us is on the Membership Committee. Put that Form 100 in your glove box, briefcase and suit pocket when you go to mass. You never know when someone you meet might be interested in the Knights. For you “Smart-Phone” guys, Supreme now has a membership App. I was able to easily search for and download it on my phone, by using the words Knights of Columbus Join Us in the App Store search field. Hopefully, this will help you strengthen the Order with new mem-bers. With all our hard work, we deserve some fun. Our Los Padres Chap-ter Installation Dinner Dance featuring the awesome band The Daddy-Os will be held on August 29th at Holy Cross in Moorpark. Our State Deputy and his officers will be in attendance. Our former Worthy District Deputy Mike Ohler will be installed as the new Chapter President. Please try to attend so we can show our support to Brother Mike in front of the State officers. The cost is only $25.00 and all proceeds from this event will go to help our seminarians in Camarillo. For tickets call GK Ron Bodigheimer at 805-379-0903. For our 4th Degree members, this is a call out for all Assemblies in the Chapter. For all my brother Sir Knights who participate in the call out, your dinner tickets are discounted by $10.00 each! This is to thank you and your ladies for participating at the mass. May God bless you and your loved ones and may He comfort any of you in physical or mental distress. Cliff Wirtz District Deputy – 79 805-208-8970 [email protected]

Brothers, thank you for helping make Columbian Year 2014-2015 a huge success. As we turn the page to Columbian Year 2015-2016, I ask that you continue the enthusiasm going into Columbian Year 2015-2016 to make it another banner year. California has so much potential to propel our Order to even greater heights. Our jurisdiction is well known for its innovative programs. The Membership Blitz, Shining Armor, Wheelchair Sunday just to name a few, originated in California and have been adopted order-wide. There is a symbiotic relationship between membership and programs. Programs attract and keep members while membership sustains pro-grams. Our Order offers so many programs such as Wheelchair Mission, Special Olympics, Ultrasound Initiative, Support for People with Intellec-tual Disabilities and much more. I ask that every Brother Knight be in-volved in at least one program that the council sponsors. You and I joined the Order because we want to be involved. We need to support our Church, community and families. Let us continue to grow in charity, which is the first principle of our Order. As the population in some states, particularly in the East Coast, continues to decline so does their membership in the Knights of Columbus. On the other hand, overall populations as well as the Catholic population in Cali-fornia is growing. This provides a great opportunity for our membership to grow. We need to add more Catholic men to our ranks so that we can do more for our Church and community. Let us invite someone to join our Order. As our membership grows, we need to encourage our Brother Knights to make their family financially secure. Our Order offers some of the best financial products available. In addition, our insurance business provides funding for charitable works worldwide, like providing prostheses to chil-dren in Haiti who lost their limbs in the recent earthquake. The insurance business is owned by and the products are only available to us. If you are not yet an insurance member, talk to your Field Agent who is also a Brother Knight. As our Order was founded by a priest, let us remember that spirituality should be part of any activity that we undertake. Let us make sure that there is an opportunity to grow in faith at every meeting through our Chaplain, Spiritual Advisor or Chancellor. Brothers, let us together grow in membership, charity, financial security and faith. Vivat Jesus!

Dear Brothers, I want to thank and congratulate all of you for attending the ceremony last night and making your Second degree. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that you have dedi-cated your time and energy to furthering your journey to-gether into the Knights of Columbus Brotherhood. Like most of you gentlemen, I myself am new to the Knights of Columbus Brotherhood. In the short time that I have been a member of this wonderful organization, my life has im-proved in ways that I can't begin to describe. I have no doubt that you men have already gained a sense of fulfill-ment in your lives since joining the Knights of Columbus. I strongly encourage all of you to attend the third degree ceremony held on Sunday, August 30th at Saint Rose of Lima church. It begins at 11:30am. It isn't often that an op-portunity arises to make your 3rd degree so close to home. Take full advantage of this opportunity. He has done a great job with the schedule for many years. I am taking over making up the Bingo schedule for now. If you have any special requests or things that Ralph knows about your scheduling requirements, please email me what I need to know. The Email is [email protected]. Please bear with us during this transition. Specific bingo job questions can still be directed to PGK Cliff Wirtz at 208-8970 We also currently are in need of two callers and some young pull tab workers. Many thanks, PGK Rick Ostrichaldez_

AUGUST Universal: VOLUNTEERS That volunteers may give themselves gener-ously to the service of the needy. Evangelization: OUTREACH TO THE MAR-GINALIZED That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.
