In case you missed this in the Church Bulletin:
THANK YOU, KNIGHTS! Each year, the Knights of Columbus
make a substantial contribution to St. Catherine to be used for
general parish purposes. This year’s contribution was used to pur-
chase the new blue hymnals that you will find in the pews.
Thanks to our Knights for this and other gifts to our parish.

Stress
This month I want to deviate from my normal insurance product topic to a much need-
ed topic that we all go through. STRESS. We all experience it, whether it be in our nor-
mal day to day activities with our families or perhaps at our workplace. Even children
are having to deal with stress in their young lives. The type of stress I would like to dis-
cuss this month zeroes in on one type that is becoming more and more common in our
society.
The stress I refer to is having to deal with aging parents. In past history, there was al-
ways a family member who stayed at home to take care of the aging parent. In today’s
society, because of us becoming a somewhat mobile society, this is very rarely the case.
Also, because of two income families, this is not something that happens very often.
Another factor that is very common is where one parent becomes ill or disabled and the
other parent quits work to care for them. Even if there are grown children around, it is
often hard for the children to help take care of their aging parent. So this creates a dif-
ferent type of stress. As a primary caregiver of a spouse, it is often a lonely time. Be-
cause we are all so busy, we often forget or don’t think about a parent who has to be
caretaker 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. This creates enormous
stress on that parent. Sometimes with devastating results.
I often think of my own situation. My Mom suffered with Alzheimers for many years.
My Dad was primary caregiver for her throughout many of those years. He could not go
anywhere for any length of time because he had to take care of Mom. This caused him
to have tremendous amount of stress and eventually he suffered a heart attack. Alt-
hough he did recover from the heart attack, we had to put Mom in a nursing home. This
took most of the stress away from Dad and gave mom the 24 hour help she needed.
Fortunately, Mom and Dad had nursing home insurance. Because of that, there were no
real additional expenses that Dad had to come up with for Mom’s care. If you are not
aware, we grew up on a farm. It was Dad’s pride and joy and he worked many long days
and nights to pay for it. He was very fortunate to have nursing home insurance because
without it, he would have had to literally sell the farm to be able to pay for Mom’s care
in the nursing home. Because of the nursing home insurance, Mom had better care and
Dad was able to preserve the family land and was able to keep it up to his death many
years later.
So I guess my topic does have to do with a product available for our members and that
is our Long Term Care Insurance. I have experienced all that I have written about and
I have shared my story with many of you. We often think about LTC helping the indi-
vidual who has the need for it, but it also affects many others. By having long term care
insurance, it provides a sense of relief for the other spouse. Or if you are single, who is
going to care of you if you need assistance doing everyday tasks like getting in and out
of bed, feeding yourself, clothing yourself, or bathing yourself? How will you be able to
afford help and pay medical bills, mortgages and all the other day to day expenses?
Long term care insurance helps to retain your assests for spouses. It provides financial
relief as well as emotional relief for your loved ones.
We have a great product available for our members and spous-
es, don’t wait until it is too late.

Knight and Family of the Month
Family— John & Glenda Massey
John and Glenda Massey have been a strong and supportive
family within the Knights of Columbus. They have both
worked and put in their time both in the council but also the
church. They are a beautiful example of what it means to be
a holy family. However, they are leaving us to spend a few
years in England. You two will be missed. Please go knowing
that we love and support you both.
Knight— Mario Chavez
Mario, you have proven yourself a shining example of
what it means to be a Knight in the service of God and
mankind. Your acceptance as our Chancellor, your deter-
mination to encourage, your faith and devotion to Mary,
plus your selflessness to chair the food bank are just a few
of the events this month that have renewed my already
profound respect for you. While you are, as you say, the
least among us, you are the greatest of examples. I'm
proud to award you Knight of the Month.

40 Days for Life Fall 2015
September 23- November 1
The Central Texas Coalition for Life will be holding prayer vigils at both Austin abortion facilities during the 40 Days for
Life campaign. Join the campaign with hundreds of cities across the world to help end abortion, peacefully and prayerfully.
Pray for one hour a week, whatever time works for your schedule, 7 am to 7 pm. Read more
Saved from Abortion
At least 210 women have chosen life for 213 babies (3 women were pregnant with twins!) that were
scheduled to be aborted in the last 5 years here in central Texas.
Rosie & Ryan
Rosie actually did not reveal to us until years later that she had scheduled to have her baby abort-
ed. She walked up to a Coalition for Life volunteer during the spring of 2015 and said, “I want you to
meet Ryan! He is my 4 year-old son. Almost five years ago, I was sitting in the waiting room of this
very abortion facility and just could not go through with my appointment because I remembered
someone praying outside and couldn’t shake the overwhelming thought that this was wrong. I am so
glad I have my son!”

As our Holy Father has asked, let us take care of one another…

Membership — Eddie Mazurek
At the monthly planning meeting in August, the discussion about the image of the Knights of Columbus came up during the
membership part of the meeting. Almost everyone said they were tired of hearing that we are a bunch of old men who drink
beer and cook bbq. In fact some were really upset that anyone would suggest that about us. So it got me to thinking about
how are we seen in the parish. I hope the following helps you when you are talking to someone about joining our great organ-
ization.
According to the fraternal survey we reported to Supreme last year, we volunteered in excess of 12,500 hours in the way of
volunteer hours in 2014 and donated over $74,000 to various charities throughout central Texas. I might add, that this num-
ber represents only a fraction of the actual volunteer hours because the majority of our council members did not turn in their
results. I think speaks volumes about what we actually do versus what we are perceived as doing.
In addition, our Grand Knight , Matthew Wade, is only 23 years old and was chosen by the council members to be our leader
for this fraternal year. Normally if someone that young wants to be Grand Knight, he would need to be in a college council,
not in one of the largest councils in the Austin diocese.
Matthew is striving to bring in younger members by promising activities that will appeal to them. At our August new mem-
ber information meeting, one 30 year old gentleman showed up. He asked me what the council did for service projects. I ex-
plained all the different projects that we do including Habitat for Humanity, Capital Area Food Bank, Special Olympics,
Right to Life, etc and he was very pleased to know that we didn’t just drink beer and bbq. He said his time was valuable and
it would be great to join an organization that would go out into the community and do great things. In fact, he is going to ask
his two brothers to join us also.
I think the above information shows a couple of things. One, we are not just a bunch of old men who drink beer and bbq.
Two, our younger parishioners want to join an organization where they can get involved and give back to the church and
community by doing service work. Now it is up to all of us to seek these younger members out, tell them all the good things
we do and let them know that our leader is only 23 years old. Please don’t ignore the young men of our parish. They are our
future!.

Scholarship Report — Johnny Langan
This year we were able to provide college scholarships to 8 people. It’s always wonderful to read the applications and meet
these young (My Chevy is older than some of them) people who are so very involved. The scholarship is based on involvement
in charitable work for church and community. Once again our applicants made our task of choosing difficult by being such
great volunteers. We wish we could give everyone a scholarship, but we eventually narrowed it down to the eight following
people:
Jordan Buys Cristian Casarez
Juliana Ison Michaela Johnson
Rachel Johnson Frankie Marchan
Matthew Wade Lindsey Worthington
My thanks to the other members of the scholarship team: Earl Carter and Jim Luhrman. We wish all the best to all those at-
tending college this year!

All:
We are about 6 weeks out from our 2015 Fiesta Knight Fundraiser. This year the event will be on
Friday, October 2nd. Here are some key issues regarding this fund-raiser.
1. We have about 100 tickets out for sale or sold. If you have tickets to sale please do so soon. If you
have money and stubs to turn in, please let me know. I will make arrangements to pick them up from
you.
2. We need a STRONG push to get all of the tickets (225) sold. Please consider talking to your neigh-
bors, co-workers, friends, fellow parishioners to purchase a ticket. If you need tickets to sell, just let me know and I will get
them to you.
3. I realize a lot of you are not able to be real active in the K of C because of work or family commitments. A great way to help
your council would be to purchase a ticket for this event. Even if you can't attend, you are still eligible to win one of the top 3
prizes. Remember no more than 225 tickets will be sold, so the odds of you winning are pretty significant.
4. We need more door prizes and silent auction items. Would you PLEASE consider asking your favorite restaurant, dry clean-
er, coffee shop etc for a donation? Gift certificates ($25 or so) would be great! The ones I have asked have been very accommo-
dating.
5. There are a lot of members and wives working behind the scenes to make this event a successful fund-raiser. We need the en-
tire council to help. Remember, many of the groups you are associated with have been helped by our council's financial support.
The reason we are having this fund-raiser is to be able to continue helping these many groups and charities.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need tickets or brochures about this event.

involved with your community; it is supporting your local Catholic
Church, while enhancing your own faith; it is about protecting and
enhancing your family life. Come see just what we are all about by

Brothers and Sisters,
On September 26-27 the Knights are coming together in a powerful formation of prayer. We are
holding a 36 hour prayer adoration of just knights and their families. However, if we are to do this,
we need you to come and pray with us. We ask that you sign up for at least an hour and come pray
with us in the chapel. You just have to sign your name but you are welcome to bring your wife and
kids with you.
Please follow the link provided to access an electronic sign up sheet and select one time (or more)
for when you would like to pray. We are just over 40% but need you to help us get to that 100%
mark. Please consider when you can come and help pray in this powerful chain of adoration.
