The proliferation of social media, a kind of user-generated content, has been phenomenal in the past fewyears, partly attributed to the user adoption of social software or Web 2.0. The volume of social media hasnow surpassed the volume of corporate and official government data on the Internet. While there remainsmany challenges in the authenticity and trustworthiness of social media, numerous organisations areleveraging on social media for enhanced communications, collaborations, customer service, marketing,expertise location, as well as mining social media data to source ideas, detect for emerging businessopportunities and identify signs of pending danger. Marketers, recruiters and educationalists, in particular,are among the forefront groups of people exploring and trying to leverage on social media.

This workshop will comprehensively outline the emergence and evolution of social media, the formulationof a social media strategy, development of social media guidelines, tools for analysing, interpreting andpresenting social media trends. First launched in 2012 and had been delivered 6 times so far, thisforthcoming workshop in 2014 has updated and expanded content especially in the areas of case studies,tools classification, local and international trends. Applications include how to apply social media for,among others, branding, customer service, marketing, open innovation, and personal lifelong learning.Participants will also work to develop a customised social media strategy for their own organisation.Pitfalls, hoaxes, and lessons learnt from social media campaigns will also be discussed. Also included isthe KMIRC’s own experiments in the use of social media for raising awareness, promotion and learningpurposes.

Eric Tsui was Chief Research Officer, Asia Pacific and Innovation Manager at Computer SciencesCorporation (CSC) between 2000 and 2005 and currently a Professor at The Hong Kong PolytechnicUniversity. Professor Tsui is a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Communications andPublic Affairs, a member of the CIGREF Foundation (France) specialising on Web 2.0, a member of theAIIM (USA) advisory board on Enterprise 2.0, a research advisor to the Artificial Intelligence Cluster atMIMOS Berhad (Malaysia), an honorary advisor in Knowledge Management for the HK Police College, amember of a Steering Committee on E-Learning in the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, and amember of the Technology Assessment Sub-Committee in the Hospital Authority. In the past 8 years, hehas custom designed and delivered numerous workshops on KM technologies, enterprise portals,collaboration tools, Web/Enterprise 2.0, Cloud Computing, Business Process Management and PersonalKM. A member of the Australian and Hong Kong Computer Societies, he has B.Sc. (Hons.), PhD andMBA qualifications. He leads E-Learning efforts and is also the recipient of several learning and teachinginnovation awards at PolyU.
