Sharing Our News Leadership Adventures

One of the descriptions of leadership I found was: Somebody who

people follow – who can direct and influence others.

Last Wednesday Mrs Hovey and I had the pleasure of

accompanying 19 of our school leaders (Chloe was at the Galuwa

Scholarship hub) to the Grip Leadership Conference in Newcastle.

This day was designed to teach leaders from many schools in the

Hunter about how to lead and the impact they could make on their

school.

Our leaders bought their return train tickets to Civic from Singleton

train station at 6.45am and proceeded to show behaviour on the

train which was considerate of others. They showed excellent

listening skills and participation at the conference and met many

leaders from other schools. They were still on their best behaviour

by the time we returned to Singleton at 5.30pm. As an aside, Civic

Railway Station coffee shop saw a lot of business with late

breakfast and afternoon tea snacks!

A busy time for students and teachers

I mentioned all the activities taking place at the moment at school.

This often causes our students to have to make choices and

prioritise where they go at break times. Continued communication

with their teachers should solve problems here.

It is also assessment time and teachers have started to enter data

for reports. For this reason we are also trying to minimise the time

that students are out of the classroom during the day. To keep up

with schoolwork your child needs to be at school every day unless

they are sick or have a school based activity approved by us.

Have a good week

Netball

Last week a team of year 5 and year 6 girls

participated in a Local Schools Netball Gala

Day. This team was put together very quickly

and had minimal training, but were still

able to come away with 3 wins out of 5 games.

Well done girls.

Rugby League

The second round of the open rugby league

competition was held on Monday afternoon.

The boys came up against Singleton Heights

Public School, who are traditionally very tough

opponents. In wet conditions King Street came

away with a 16-6 victory. Congratulations boys,

and good luck in the next round.

THANK YOU Many thanks to those generous people who sent along cakes and slices, & made monetary donations to support our cake stall to raise funds for the Cancer Council. The total of $431.80 was raised. Once again, many thanks for supporting this worthwhile cause.

Students begin Athletic Carnival Preparation

During the last few weeks our Primary students

have been preparing for our Athletics Carnival.

During their sport sessions, the children are not

only striving for the chance to qualify for the field

events, but are improving on their skills. The

carnival is being held on Wednesday June 26th,

and will run for the whole day. We welcome all

parents and friends to join us in spectating or

helping out on the day. The Zone Carnival will

be held on Friday August 2nd.

Our infants carnival will be held on Thursday,

27th June.

TERM 2 | WEEK 5

Congratulations Chloe

Year 6 student Chloe C last week attended a 3 day

camp as a successful recipient of the Galuwa

Scholarship. The Galuwa Scholarship is a

pathway program for Aboriginal youth in partnership

with Xstrata Coal and the Department of Education

and Communitites. Chloe firstly met the criteria of

attaining a high level of proficiency in the 2012

Naplan assessments. She then was required to

submit a written application with references from the

School Principal and the Aboriginal community.

Last week’s camp was attended by 80 year 6, 7 and

8 students. They participated in a variety of cultural

and fun activites and lessons. Well done Chloe for

being a fine

representative of our school.

Stage 3 Day at Singleton High

On Monday 3rd June our stage 3 students will be

visiting Singleton High School. They will join other

stage 3 students from throughout the district and will

have the opportunity to undertake different types of

lessons, routines and timetables from a high school

perspective. It will be a very informative and

interesting day.

King Street Joins Singleton Arts Festival

On Wednesday evening 26th June (same day as

athletics carnival), our school will be hosting a

combined schools concert in our beautiful hall. This

event will be part of the Singleton Arts Festival, and

will be coordinated by Singleton Public School. This

is the first year local schools have participated in

such a way. It is a wonderful opportunity to

showcase some of the opportunities our children are

offered in the Arts field within our schools. King

Street will be represented by our Rock Band,

Starstruck performers and some of our Eisteddfod

entrants.

School Leaders attend Conference

Last Wednesday, 22nd May, 19 of our school leaders

headed down to the train station at 6.30am to catch

a train. We were soon at Civic Train Station ready

to walk to the Panthers Club. First, we stopped at a

little café where the teachers got coffee and kids got

croissants and yummy stuff.

We arrived at Panthers and got a conference book

and a pen. Our conference started with a game of

‘noughts and crosses’. The first session lasted

around 1 ½ hours. We played ‘Heads, Shoulders,

Knees and Toes’. ‘Head’ symbolised thinking of

others, ‘Shoulders’ was carrying the weight of

others, ‘Knees’ moving forward, and ‘Toes’ was

about balancing your priorities.

TERM 2 | WEEK 5

After lunch we were back learning about leadership.

In the second and third sessions we had to identify

good leaders and their characteristics. It was

awesome. Soon we were home, and it was raining

and dark.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

Our school will be again participating in the Earn and

Learn program run through Woolworths. If you would

like to collect your points and send them into the

office we will collate them and exchange them for

craft or stationery items for the children to be able to

use at school.

“Mad Professors” to visit on Friday

This Friday stage 2 students will be taking part in a

very exciting Science Day. They have been

encouraged to dress the part and come to school as

‘mad science professors’! They will take part in 4

activities in the morning session which include:

Taste Test Room- blindfolded tasting of

some unusual foods,

Make a lung experiment with empty drink

bottles and balloons,

Make a human body system collage with

crafty materials,

Hands on Bones and Organs- children will be

able to look, touch, and smell organs such as

the heart, lungs, brain and bones.

In the afternoon their learning will continue with

Magic School Bus videos on appropriate body

systems. These activities all support their current

unit of study on the human body.

Look out next week for what are sure to be some

very interesting photos on our website!

Debating Skills on Show

Last Tuesday the year 5 and year 6 debating teams

participated in a Round Robin day at Singleton

Heights Public School.

The year 6 team came up against teams from

Singleton Public School in both debates, and

unfortunately were unsuccessful both times. In the

second debate we were very unlucky not to win.

It was a fun day.

Term Reflection

By Nick J

Good morning 5/6H. Over last term on the 27th of

February, my family and I put 10 eggs under one of

our chooks, which was a Plymouth Rock. These are

grey bodied with white spots all over them. After 20

days, 6 of the eggs hatched and we found one white

and 5 brown chickens. These are cross bred Rhode

Island Red and Isa Brown, which are some of the

old school chooks from last year, as well as other

breeds we already have.

We are hoping for females, which are called pullets

until they start laying.

Again another chook went broody and on the

11th March we put another 7 eggs under this one,

which was a Peking Hen. She hatched all her eggs

on the 31st of March, which was Easter Sunday. As

I mentioned before they were the same breeding,

but this time we ended up with 2 black, 1 striped and

4 brown.

In six months the female chickens will begin laying

eggs for my breakfast and the males will be crowing

and sold at the poultry auction or on my dinner plate!

This is something I have done this term. I would like

to finish with a question for all of you. What came

first, the chicken or the egg?!! Thank you.

TERM 2 | WEEK 5

REMINDER At King Street School we have a

policy endorsed by the WHS Committee (Work, Health,

and Safety) that no animals are to be on school grounds.

The only exception would be if they are brought in for

“Show & Tell” and taken home immediately after by

parents. It has been noted that some parents are

bringing dogs to school with them when dropping and

collecting children. We would ask that these parents

cease this practice for the safety of the children at our

school.

Thankyou

P & C Cracker Night Meeting

The P&C Cracker Night Committee will be meeting

again this Thursday 30th May at 9:30am outside the

school canteen. Anyone interested in helping to

organise, run a stall or has any suggestions for

Cracker Night please come along. Any kind of help

is much appreciated.

Thanks

EVACUATION & LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

The school has evacuation and lockdown

procedures in place to ensure the safety of students,

staff and visitors. A “whoop” sound indicates an

evacuation a flat “beep” indicates a lockdown.

We would ask that parents/visitors who are on the

school site during these times adhere to our

Emergency Management Plan.

In an evacuation we would ask you to move to the

Assembly Area on the main oval. During a

lockdown we would like you to move into the nearest

classroom.

At these times, signs are placed on our gates

informing people which procedure is happening. We

would ask that you follow the directions on these

signs as the safety of everyone is very important to

us.

Thank-you for your cooperation.

Whooping Cough

There has been a reported case of Whooping Cough

at the school. Please see your Doctor if your child is

unwell.

For more information, please follow the following

Lost Property At the moment there are a lot of jackets, jumpers

and hats that are in the Lost Property box. If your

child is missing an item can you please check the

box which is outside the ‘Bell Room’ in the quad. In

order to help it is a great idea to put your child’s

name on their clothing so it can be returned to them

promptly!!

Thank you

Year 2 to Year 6

Excursion to see Star Struck

Star Struck is a live 3 hour spectacular presented by

On Friday 14th June we will have an excursion to

Newcastle Entertainment Centre to see the matinee

performance. Anyone in Year 2 or Primary plus

parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to

there has to be an adult accompanying them.

The cost of the excursion will be $40 for students

travel. If interested please fill out the form below

and return to the office with the money included.

The note and money need to be returned by 31st
